Just another day in the Bronx.
So much fun watching the fans-beating on the walls, dismayed looks.  I've been listening to WFAN (NYC) all day-they have given up hope and just hope to not lose tonight.  I have to say that both the fans and hosts all say that the Astros are the better team-no excuses about bad luck on their part.

2
See that Stanton will be DH today, replacing Encarnacion.    Not a bad move-they have to do something.

Frees up a 40-man spot.  Could Cristian Javier take that spot?  He'll need to be on the 40-man before the Rule 5 draft regardless.

For sure...the international players are the future of the astros for awhile since we won't be getting any can't miss prospects  anytime soon.

Here's how slow it is for the Astros. When asked if he was close to making any deals, Jeff Luhnow joked: “I’d say we are close to making some decisions about the Rule 5 Draft tomorrow.”

I hope there’s enough talent left in the system that Luhnow is willing to give up that can land a big league hitter.

I doubt the REAL Ted Williams could make any difference with this team right now.  They are going through a funk right now.  They will come out of it, and hopefully not before its too late to at least salvage a wild card spot.

You know the old saw about good teams being strong up the middle? Well, our C, SS, and 2B are all on the DL. Springer should be afraid. Very afraid.

These are the times that try fans’ souls. Do not bail on this team.

Last year, I believe around this time the Astros had a similar trying time when for several weeks they seemed like the worst team in baseball.  People, including myself were starting to worry.  Hopefully the ship will right itself in the coming weeks.

From a recent prospect chat:

Whirled Series: Which team’s prospect system has made the biggest jump from preseason strength to now? Which has made the biggest slide?

Eric A Longenhagen: Reds have added a ton of interesting depth among the guys I have 37-40 FVs on (basically low-level sleepers types), Kansas City has added, too. Also Houston’s ability to coax the most out of pitchers by improving spin efficiency and pitching approach is noticeable (Bielak, Solomon, James, like 5 other guys)

https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/eric-longenhagen-chat-7-12-18/

I've been wondering the same about this question from the chat:

Fangraphs reader: Is Joe Perez injured?

2:10
Eric A Longenhagen: That’s Astros RHP/3B prospect Joe Perez who began his pro career this season after returning from TJ. Plus power, plus arm, could spin a breaking ball as an amateur (actually had some of the better spin rates in his high school class). I’ve noticed he hasn’t played in a while but don’t know if he’s hurt (though I assume so) nor what might be wrong.

Seth Beer.  A collegiate first baseman/outfielder out of Clemson.  I’m a bit surprised at a corner college player at this point.  Definitely a departure from the Luhnow norm.  If he doesn’t hit for both high average and high power this is a miss because he has little defensive value.  If he does hit he’s your #4 hitter for a decade.

We already have one AJ Reed, don't we?

Having Verlander won't make a difference if Keuchel and McCullers don't get right.

Lunhow needs to do what it takes to get Verlander.  Right now Keuchel and McCullers are major question marks heading into October.

Name them-Verlander, Sale or whoever.  They cannot get us past the first round of playoffs (If we make it) if the staff cannot get its mojo back.  Can this happen?  Who knows.

Talk Zone / Re: Trade Deadline 2017
« on: August 04, 2017, 03:27:12 am »
Let's see ...

1) there were no true game-changers on the block; Gray is nice, but he's not the difference between also-rans and world champions; there was no 1998 Randy Johnson (or, on the offensive side, 2004 Carlos Beltran) out there; the Yankees needed Gray more than the Astros, because, despite the recent run of mediocrity, the Astros are still the better team;

2) the Astros were reportedly highly focused and very near obtaining one of the very best relievers available, but the other team's owner pulled back; but for a dyspeptic octogenarian in Baltimore, people would be praising Luhnow as the second coming of Branch Rickey; that seems like pretty flimsy grounds for people to base an opinion;

3) contrary to some complaints, the Astros didn't put all their eggs in one basket with Britton; they reportedly had a couple of other deals in the works concurrent with the Orioles trade; they didn't come through; that's life; you can't force other people to give you everything you want; the only thing you can control is how you react, i.e., not panicking;

4) they obtained a pitcher whose overall body of work is unimpressive, but whose skill set upon closer inspection is very suitable to fill a specific hole in the bullpen, i.e., a lefty who can retire lefties; Liriano is yet another example of looking beyond superficiality to find someone who contributes to the roster in ways that may not seem obvious;

5) there is still no team in baseball that has more organizational talent, major-plus-minors-combined, than the Astros; better to have a general manager who focuses on the big picture, having a dominating team that can win for years to come, than one who panics and overpays due to fan and media (and apparently clubhouse) complaining;

6) no matter what moves the Astros could've made at the trade deadline, as someone else already pointed out, if enough key players can't get healthy and play effectively by the time the playoffs roll around, they're unlikely to get very far anyway; you can't remake your whole roster in July;

7) maybe the top prospects Luhnow refused to give up won't work out, but based on his track record, one or more of them probably will; by keeping them all, he increases the chance that the ones who do succeed won't do so elsewhere; this team is still early in its window;

8) Brian T. Smith sounds like the second coming of Pinwheel, stirring up shit just to have something to write about; Keuchel should've kept his comments behind closed doors, but Smith is fanning the flames by patting Keuchel on the head about it.

Magnifique.

So luckily I had a very long drive to do today that I put off until right after the trade deadline. Initially, I thought it'd be a great time to make the drive seem short by listening to the trade analaysis on all the crazy deals JL pulled off. It didn't work out that way.

However, I'm glad I planned it that way as I likely would have posted something "emotional"... which I think is understandable. Most everyone here would agree this is a special season, it's hard not to get emotionable about it. So instead I put on some great music, thought about it some, then didn't, then thought about it some more. At first it was the Aoki trade that was really bugging me, I really liked what he brought to the team, but there's this one JL quote that kept coming back to me throughout the drive, "trust the math".

Then it was coming to terms with the fact Liriano is the only incoming help this pitching staff has. Again though... "trust the math". Ok...

Another issue I kept running through my thick 'noggin was my initial reaction to some of the prospects it seemingly took to get players I thought would be useful on the Astros. Surely we could have offered better... right? The more I thought about it the more I kept coming back to the same conclusion. Luhnow is doing exactly what he did to get this team to where it is now. Trusting the math.

JL has had a big part in creating a team that is unarguably very good this year and will be very good for at least a couple more years. He's done it in large part by sticking to this philosophy. He sees something in Fisher that made him comfortable trading Aoki. As fun as he was to watch I'll trust the math here.

JL obviously went waaay beyond Liriano's stats against lefties as a starter. He likely has data freely available that we could only dream of. Like how Liriano's two best pitches play against the 6-7-8 hitters in a lineup the first time through. He sees something here. I'll trust the math.

As far as deals that got done or didn't... It seems that he had at least one deal in place that got nixed by an imbecile who is running his team straight in to the shitter. Not his fault. But the other deals...? Luhnow either didn't trust the math or they simply weren't on the table. The two best starting pitchers available were from within the division. The price may have been higher for the Astros.

We now have to rely on getting people healthy. Also,  who knows what might pop up on the waiver wire?

For me, I'm gunna "trust the math" this season. It's gotten us this far and it's gotten us a damn good team.

Its difficult to understand the machinations of the trade market when we know so little of the negotiations and games which the general managers play.  We only hear the public pronouncements so really know next to nothing about why decisions are truly made.  Luhnow has built this team from nothing, so why second guess him?  It would have been nice to have an additional reliever, but my personal guess is when one has a deep system, the price goes up proportionally.

Yep: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2139311-george-springer-injury-updates-on-astros-stars-quad-and-return

July 2014: "Astros manager Bo Porter told Brian McTaggart of MLB.com Tuesday he didn't think a DL stint was in the works..."
Aug 6: Had a setback during a rehab assignment
Sept 16: Astros confirm Springer is done for the year.

If  this scenario plays out again, its possible we could be without Springer and Correa for the season.  Not something anyone wishes to contemplate.

Luhnow on 790 this morning covered several topics.  McCullers and his command was discussed-Luhnow felt it is due to his long layoff-just needs some more innings.
Re  trade deadline, Luhnow really addressed the crux of the matter.  He said they would make a trade if it made sense to do so, but he is equally looking at the next few years when a number of contracts will need to be sorted out.  They are hamstrung with the media contract for the next decade or so, so he is not willing to make a big splash for the short term.  The Cardinals were mentioned as a model which he believes in-not many big trades but a solid product every year.
Very lucid plan.  Love it.

I think a team would be happy to "maybe" get an elite closer towards the end of the first round. To me, you want to aim higher with the 2nd or 5th overall pick - either an All-Star everyday player, or a #1/2 starter.

FWIW, John Manuel at BA thinks the Rockies will take Jay as the third pick...maybe they hope to convert him to a starter.  KLaw said that keeping Jay in the bullpen was the single stupidest managerial move he had ever seen.

Springer is the one who worries me the most, much more than Singleton.  It's been basically a year now, and it appears that like Baez, he is entirely unwilling or unable to change his approach.  Specifically, swing for the fences on just about every pitch.

Problem is Hinch is encouraging bad behavior by placing him behind Altuve in the order.  Seems that several of these sluggers need to go down in the lineup until they prove otherwise.

It's a very legitimate concern that they swing and miss so often *and* haven't shown the capacity to make adjustments. Baez in particular makes me nuts because he has the raw talent to be a superstar and refuses to change his approach.

Per this quote, we might see DeShields play in the upcoming series: " Reserve outfielder Delino DeShields is the only player who hasn't started a game yet. Banister said that will likely happen in the near future."

Deshields is still very green, but the Rangers obviously see something.

Actually, the Marlins did make the 40% qualifying offer to Krook (or roughly $650,000) which he turned down. That allowed Miami to receive the 36th pick in this year's draft as compensation.

Krook then honored his original commitment to U of Oregon and was pitching well this past season (leading the Pac 12 in strikeouts at the time) until...he tore his UCL and had to undergo TJS.

Wow...foggy memory, but logic says one would at least offer the 40% to not lose the pick.

Thanks for the correction and update.

Had forgotten this until lately, but not only did the Marlins not attempt to modify a bonus offer (1.6 M), but they withrew the offer entirely last year with the thirty fifth pick of the draft after Matt Krook failed his physical exam.

Time for everyone to stop vilifying the astros....just our back luck that it occured with a 1-1 pick.

I agree with most who are thinking the promotion of Santana might be premature-as said earlier, Luhnow said only a few days ago that Santana might get a September callup.  I thought Luhnow was becoming predictable-a minimum for 2/3 of season for each level-was thinking he would make Correa spend two years slogging through AA and AAA-now I wonder.

It doesn't seem like its motivation.  I really hope it's just physical (short term).

Wondering if its really not physical at all.  Last year he didn't do so well at Quad Cities, and unless he had another injury last year prior to QC which everyone forgot to tell us about, we may have another Jio on our hands.  To me, he lacks any deception in his delivery (almost like a pitching machine) which would explain why the hitters aren't getting fooled at all.

Hasn't shown power a lot in games, true. BA's scouting report says 70 raw power.

Keith Law ranked Fisher #15 on his list.

Right....but I am a bit perplexed. While at Va for 3 years he hit a total of 17 HR's.  Even if he has such raw power, with such a lack of game performance it seems he should be too speculative for such a high pick.

IMO corner outfield, corner infield.

Exactly.  Jackson is apparently versatile enough to play any of these positions.  We are loaded with pitching (and lets face it, its risky picking a HS pitcher 1-1), but the offense definitely needs some help in these areas.  With talk that we could sign him for under slot, we could possibly repeat 2012 again.

Of course there is the story going around that Rodon does not pitch well in cool/cold weather, which would make sense since Rodon seems to be improving toward the end of the season.  If so, draft him and keep the roof open during the summer when he pitches...this would quickly prove or disprove this theory.

I doubt his opinion will change the Astros' approach, but I do suspect the next decade will see a swing towards his and TJ's philosophy.

Agreed...apparently statistics about the frequency of players being on the DL was not kept until about 2002, so basically anecdotal stories are the best evidence of this paradox.  Per fangraphs, TJ surgery frequency has gone up dramatically while pitch counts have declined, which might suggest that Nolan is right, or perhaps players are more willing to try TJ surgery because of its success.  Anyways, here is a link for that discussion...(beware-its Bleacher Report, but still not a bad article).

While we're talking about total futility there's a piece that I suspect many of you read that deserves mention:

Ouch.

I know that a lot of Astros fans are excited about the future and surely that's a comfortable place to be until the team's leadership begins trading away any and all arb-eligible players. But was it really necessary to be so historically bad in so many areas to rebuild in an effective manner? Was it really necessary to tarnish the team's history and shame the team's fans, or at least those that remain?

It's a thoroughly disgraceful episode if the word episode can be used to describe a three year trajectory.

And how 'bout this, Astros fans-it won't be much better next year.   The validity of Luhnow's "plan" won't be evident for at least two more years (more likely, three) when we start seeing Luhnow's picks filter up to the club.  That will be an exciting time, but thinking about a couple more years of what we have seen lately makes me want to puke.

I not trying to trash Luhnow, as he does many things real well.  However, his job is greater than just "building up the MiLB system."  His job is to build a MLB club.  I feel too many people excuse EVERYTHING based on the fact that they see his sole job as building the minors.  He needs some heat about the beyond miserable shitshow this team displays almost every day.  There are other clubs with similar "woe is me" excuses as the Astros, yet they look like progress is being made.

Sorry, just venting, and didn't intend to hijack the thread, but even knowing they lack much talent, this team is hard to watch.  Someone has to be acountable.

We are all frustrated right now-the weather is hot and the astros are not.  We all have hope that help is coming through our farm system-problem is, there are going to be some people we are counting on who will the the reincarnation of Wallace...its just part of the game of course, but after being spanked by the M's, the fact that we have an overall top tier farm team is cold comfort.

Yeah, some crazy stuff was said about Ackley and Brett Wallace before they were drafted such as 'even if he doesn't develop into a power hitter he will be a threat to win multiple batting titles'. I think it's a little rich to say any amateur player is a sure thing to challenge for batting titles or even hit .300 regularly. It just goes to show you even the most polished college hitters that are guaranteed to hit in the show may very well not.

Agreed.

I found an interesting article which basically refutes the notion that a successful draft often consists more of luck than skill.

The speculation on Rodon (coming from his coach) is that taking the fall off messed Rodon up.  They decided to be cautious with him after pitching in the summer and it took him a while to get going this season.  He hasn't been as dominant as last season, but he has been better recently.  It will be interesting to see how he does next season.  Tyler Beede is another name to watch for 1/1.  He turned down a 1st-round offer to go to Vanderbilt and has been great this season.  Command can still be an issue, but he has plenty of time to work on that.

I agree with you about Beede....great stuff this season-he is tied for the school record with 13 wins this season.

I really like the name. I still answer to that name (often "Rag" for short) from some of my family and oldest friends and former teammates.

I think I have been to two Rangers games in the 25 yrs I have lived in D.  One really memorable moment though was years ago when the Rangers were really stinking it up almost everyday, Charlie Hough was really getting killed on the mound and an old lady (drunk out of her skull) was sitting just behind the dugout yelling "RAG ARM" continuously whilst Hough was pitching.  When he was finally taken out of the game, the reliever wasn't having any better luck, and she then started yelling "Son of Rag Arm".   Even the Rangers players had to turn their head to hide their laughter.

Pure posturing and sour grapes from a  naive high school kid. I put no stock in it. If the Astros can offer him $3 mil, he'd be a damn fool not to take it.

Hopefully Lances' father will talk some sense into the kid.  If not, as they say, a fool and his money are soon parted.

Here are the 2012 draft slotting values: BA LINK

A $3M savings at 1.1 (i.e. difference in signing someone at 1.4 money vs. 1.1 money) is the MONETARY equivalent of the Astros having an extra 3.5 second round picks.  Depending on what they are hearing about some players falling in the draft because of 'signability' issues, a 'savings' at 1.1 could be big. REALLY big.

Again, don't have a clue as to the correct way to pick 1.1 based on the new restrictions, but I am certainly intrigued...

Surely the Boras factor has to be part of the equation.  If the Astros wish to have extra money for secondary picks, this strategy would necessarily exclude a Boras client at 1-1.

Depends.  Lyles vaulted his status with it.  Most teams were looking at him in the 3rd-round range, but Atlanta was in on him, also.  Had he skipped it/not performed well, he'd probably be in their organization now.  It shouldn't be used as a substitute for months or years of scouting, but it can be helpful to get one last look at a guy; see how they fare against the competition, etc.

Right...I was actually being a bit facetious.  Bushue may have had the performance of his life on that day...so many factors involved makes drafting an educated guess-even for a 1-1 pick.

If there is a positional player that is a potential multi-time All-Star type I'd rather see that guy picked than a middle-of-the-order type that the organzation has plenty of.  I keep coming back to the SS.

Moreover, Crane doesn't have baggage with Boras like McLane did.  I'm not saying that it won't still be an issue, but Crane certainly won't hold Beltran against some draft pick.

Wasn't Boras the "advisor" to Jacoby Jones?  Of course no one knows what our final offer was for Jones, but McLane did have post-Beltran dealings with Boras-none successfully however.

No, but the pendulum has gone too far....nor do I think $20mm is worth just 4 wins, but I get your point.  While I may think of others, the issues I have with the current mak-up are:
1. Lack of player leadership. Who is there to teach the kids how to be an MLB player? It isn't Carlos.
2. Houston fans deserve more entertainment value for what they pay to go see the Astros. MMP will set record lows in attendance this year as a result.  Its disappointing.

I don't think any fans will make their decision about attending based upon these three veterans.  This collection of veterans could never be called leaders either on or off the field.

Personally I think seeing the new players evolve into veterans will be more enjoyable than seeing some guys near the end of their careers trying to fit in with a new group.

Sorry, but the NL does not suck regardless of whether the astros are there.  The NL (for whatever time it remains DH free) holds the torch for REAL baseball.  The astros are joining the softball league....I am torn about that and will probably not follow them anymore.  I live in Dallas and have been to ONE Rangers game in the last 20 years (a pre-season game with the astros). Everyone assumes:

Everyone might eventually be proved right on the first one, but I doubt many have enough first hand knowledge to honestly reach these conclusions.

Since most are either depressed or suicidal when we think about what has happened this weekend, this link is a Braves fan perspective on the trade, and if it makes anyone feel better, this person is more than a little nervous about what they paid for Bourn.

Only thing I could see him holding back for is if he truely wants to play football.  (Which will also risk a big injury)

Football or Scott Boras--the latter more likely than the former IMO.

I don't really agree with Krugman often (albeit I don't have a Nobel prize in economics), and even though his cure for this economy is specious (he thinks the Federal government has not provided enough liquidity) I will agree him that there is a Bad Moon Rising.   Pray that we are both idiots and better times are ahead.

Leyland: Umpire admitted missing game-ending third strike call

It's still early, but when you're a half game out of first it's a shitty time to be on the business end of another bad call, one that potentially costs you a game. The ump admits he knew he blew it right away, but why didn't he correct himself? How long until this shit comes to a boil?

The umpires need to get in the mode of Joe West---blown calls?  No problem-just remember, the worst thing you can do is admit a blown call.  Provoke the player and/or manager to the point that they become the distraction.

the astros seem to be in a vortext of some kind. they are being sucked down into the vacuum of mondaneness. maybe it is a space time thing. i know the team is not made up of superstars , but can the defence and the offence both impolde at the same time. it has to be some kind of  practical joke of the fates because surely the muses and gods of baseball could not be so cruel. something good has to come out of this season. you know how when you are at walmart and see something uber cheap.. i found astros peanuts for 1.50, or like you find out you can bring food into the ball park. (not at mmpus tho). its like wow that was a good thing. i mean it may just be the improvement of q or that the astros are a second half team..right now being an astros fan is slighlty painful. but to me the pain would be greater not to be one

Nominated for post of the year.

Andy,  I had the same problem-hot water tank in attic had a huge leak while I was away and I ended up staying in a hotel for 3 months while every board on my floors were replaced, along with my upstairs and garage ceiling and several walls.  Entire cost was 50K, which my insurance thankfully covered.  I replaced the system with a tankless waterheater in the garage, and can now sleep at night knowing this is one less disaster to worry about.

He got the Astros to the World Series? That's almost like saying he is the reason the Astros stink this year because he is 2-6.

Time for Roy to ride into the sunset...the astros organization has more holes than fabric, so if Roy thinks personal goals are more important that team goals he should keep his mouth shut and have his agent work behind the scenes to get him traded to a team with a brighter immediate future.  We will hopefully get a handful of prospects in return.

I found this article about Shoeless Joe who briefly played after the Black Sox scandal in Bastrop, La, the home of Shane Reynolds.  I remember as a child hearing my grandfather talking about watching him play, but I thought it was mostly BS.

Reading about Joe's talent makes me even more sad about "better athletics through chemistry".   Joe claimed he was innocent of the scandal--was simply sticking by his teammates, but regardless of his guilt or innocense I could hardly think of another player I would rather watch.

MLB is a nasty mixture of high finance and tradition with the former it seems becoming more important than the latter.  Boras has been rightly called many things, but if nothing else he is a financially sharp businessman.  The owners may hold their nose while listening to the proposal.

Watching Taveras mature as a hitter makes me think of last year when it seemed that Willie could only bunt or beat out an infield ground ball for a hit.  He seemed to break out of this mold during the playoffs and continues this year.  I remember Jim stating that Willie was a good line drive hitter in AA ball and not to worry.  Another good call, Jim.

re Messrs Gimenez & Quintero, neither is exactly setting the league on fire, so as Munson won backup catcher with the stros with his bat, House might win a spot with either Gimenez or Quintero taking his place in Corpus.

With Ausmus probably retiring in two years and quality free agent catchers almost non existent, its not too early to start shaking the bushes for a replacement.

Continuing with Corpus players, have you heard anything about J.R. House' defensive and pitch calling abilities?  He is quite old for AA at age 26, so I wonder if the astros might soon move him to Round Rock.

I simply have observed that Lidge is not as intimidating as he once was after becoming the stros closer.  I don't know if his fastball no longer has the same movement or if the hitters have adjusted.  As I wrote before, Lidge no longer blows the hitters away with his stuff and this worries me.
Normally he gives up at least one hit and/or a walk in the ninth and his strikeouts have declined significantly.  Don't know if his delivery is slightly off, but maybe a look at some old films might help.

Although Lidge leads the NL in saves, it seems that lately whenever he comes in he has to work himself out of a self-created jam.  I find that I cringe whenever he comes in to save a game---he might be able to strike out the side after loading the bases and get a save, but how long can this go on?

Talk Zone / Re: Tejada?

Lets concentrate on trading for a starting pitcher...we can look for position players next year when the budget outlook is much improved via the FA market.  The major and minor league teams are much too thin talentwise to give away good prospects for a single player.  Trading Lidge and a prospect for Zito would be a deal I would make.

Does anyone know if Ed Ott is still coaching?  I will never forget that famous moment in 1991 when Rob Dibble started a brawl when he threw a fast ball BEHIND Eric Yelding--at the bottom of the ensuing pile, Ed was choking Dibble whose face began turning blue.  I haven't heard anything about him in years and was just wondering.
