Boston's a great place, have been up there each of the past three summers.

A couple other recommendations: if you're into cheesy fun, the Tea party museum is interesting, and we've done the Ghosts and Graveyards tour. As far as eats go, one of my must-go places up there is Tasty burger over by Fenway. If you want a really good burger with lots of choices as far as toppings, its your place. Plus, they're open pretty late, and since there are no Whataburgers, it hits the spot after a few (a lot) beers.

I also recommend the Freedom Trail.

Did you connect with blue tooth?  Never done that before

Yeah, my truck has built in blue tooth connectivity.  I was playing music through the USB plug.

I did some googling, and apparently there's some issues with them leaving off public transportation options (which was nice that the old one had it, even though I don't need it every day, the few days I am in Austin during the year it was useful to have) and errors in the maps themselves.  I haven't run into the second error, but for what I needed from it today, it was nice.

What am I missing in regards to the new Maps app being so terrible?  I used it a lot today and I liked it a lot. The turn by turn navigation played over my speakers, and each time it briefly turned down my radio so I could head it. It was much more convenient then the old google maps, at least when using it as a navigation device while driving.

Really only a couple of 'em dressed up.  I was part of the original group on the Astros.com message board that started it, but I only made it to maybe 2-3 more over the years (including the 2004 NLCS Game 4 Oswalt start) due to travel issues, etc.  I can't speak for what it turned into, but at the beginning it was a play on another pitcher from another team's cheering section, I think it was Randy Wolf.  Basically it was an excuse for a bunch of friends from a message board to get together and watch the Astros.

« on: November 08, 2011, 07:09:44 pm »
This weekend some friends and myself are entering as a cooking team into a local chili/beans/bbq cookoff.  Since my main job on the team is to drink beer, I'm looking for some recommendations for good beers that are sold in cans.  We're not supposed to have glass bottles out there at all, so I'm turning to the best beer experts I know.  I know I can get something like Shiner Bock/Blonde in a can, and that would work if nothing else, but I'd like to find something else to try.

So, any suggestions on something that's good in a can and can be found at a Spec's?

(Any of you guys are welcome to drive the 80-100 miles south down 59 and critique our BBQ, chili, beans, and salsa Saturday)

Has to be Sunday for Week 1 to count.

That's strange, because in another league I run on Yahoo!, there is this message:

Leagues that complete drafts (live, auto, offline) after 11:59pm PT on Wednesday, September 7 will start scoring in week 2. However, the commissioner can adjust the league setting "Start League scoring in" to Week 1.

No, "pretty lame" would have been bailing on the league, leaving you a team down.

I already said that it was my fault for not seeing that you changed the draft time - which, by the way, you changed on August 27th on the league page, so that's hardly "almost a month".  But, regardless of when I saw the message, I didn't think I was capable of making the draft, so I was seeing if anyone wanted to take my spot, someone that could make the draft.  No one stepped up in the brief window of time available, so I figured out how to make both drafts, and everyone's happy.  How is that "pretty lame"?

Oh, and the week you "destroy" my weak-ass team, are you going to be borrowing someone else's?  I went and took a look at your team and...yeah...not scared.

WTF man.  You asked me multiple times to be in this league, and I've had the draft date and time posted for a long time.  I can make your slot a bye week if you can't get your shit together.

I've got my "shit" together, I just didn't realize until tonight that you had changed the draft time to exactly the same time as another league I was running.  Yeah, shame on me for not checking this thread, but I made it work.  I just drafted using two different browsers.

I have become a big fan of things Real Ale.  Their Firemans #4 has been my staple all summer long.  They even have it on draught at The Hemingway.  I've yet to try the Oktoberfest (things are a bit slow making it out this way), but it's at the top of my list.

Did you try their Devil's Backbone seasonal?  I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I agree with others about the Shiner Oktoberfest.  It's not the best I've had, but it's enjoyable and is relatively easy to find (now) in my small town.  I've gone through about a case so far.

Top of 8th, Brandon Lyon on the mound.

Young flies out to Pence.
Kinsler flies to RF, Pence makes a nice sliding catch.
Hamilton drops one in over Manzella in short left field.
David Murphy walks.
Smoak rips one to RF, Pence falls fielding the ball.  Hamilton scores.
Vlad up, pinch hitting for the catcher.  He hits it up the middle, Murphy scores.  4-1 Texas.  I'm apparently bad luck, so I'm done.

Nope, just the other 2 TD and the interception.

Seems to me that if they don't count it as a passing TD on his part, how can it count as a receiving TD?  Hopefully they'll change it back.

Has it occurred to you that those extra running plays may come from the fact that the QB is now a gazelle instead of a lead footed octogenarian?    If VY runs 4-5 more plays a game than Collins was, there's your difference right there.

Part of it is Vince running, yes, but a big part of it is the team finally realizing that they have one of the best backs in the league and actually using him a lot.  Instead of trying to pass, pass, pass to a WR corp lacking of a true #1 option, they're going back to their bread and butter.

Johnson went from 16 carries a game on average the first 6 games to over 24 carries a game the last 5.

Like I said, don't for a second think that I'm taking *any* credit away from Vince, cause either be it from his special "winningness" ability, or from the team changing their play calling to match his (and the team's strengths) better, him being on the field *has* led to the team turning a lost season into a potential playoff team.

Titans offense, first 6 games:  14.0 ppg
Titans offense, since VY took over, same RB, same WRs: 29.0 ppg

So, yeah, cram it, Aggie.

First 6 games:  33.67 passes per game, 26 runs per game
Last 5 games: 25.6 passes per game, 36.6 runs per game

I'm not saying that VY is *not* the catalyst behind the winning streak, because he obviously is a huge part of it.  Whether they're winning now because he's a "winner" or because the Titans adjusted their offensive philosophy is debatable.

I'm enjoying a six pack of Warsteiner Dunkel this weekend.  It's the first time I've had it, and I'm really enjoying it.  I think the Dunkel style is running a fairly close second to Marzen as my favorite type of beer.

I second the vote for the Aquarium.  Nice and air conditioned.  The zoo was nice, but it's way too hot in the summer to enjoy it.

A couple places we like to eat when we go to New Orleans:  Cafe Maspero (on Decatur, across the street from the Jax brewery/mini mall) and Acme Oysterhouse (on Iberville between Royal & Bourbon, one block from Canal).  They aren't Emeril-quality fine dining, but the food's good and pretty cheap.

Cheesy arena rock?  I don't think I've ever heard those 3 words used to describe KoL.

I like the band.  I liked the last CD a lot, but I liked their older stuff even more.  I guess if I was more of a snob about it I could be annoyed by the growing legions of teen girls that have suddenly discovered them, but I pay no mind to that.

We enjoy eating at Cafe Maspero on Decatur and the Acme Oysterhouse is really good as well.

Go to Pat O'Brien's, we always enjoy the piano bar (but that might not be rowdy enough for a Bachelor party...)

Good thing about Bourbon Street is there is no lack of bars and strip clubs.  If you don't like where you're at, get your "geaux" cup and head to the next one.

You should definitely check out the aquarium, as it's nice and a good way to get out of the heat.  The zoo's pretty nice as well, but hot as hell in the summer.

Take 'em to Cafe du Monde at least once for beignets for breakfast.  Exploring Jackson Square is always nice, and you can take 'em to the French market for cheap souvenirs.

I've never done it, but I've heard the Steamboat is a pretty cool thing to do. You could also take them over to the Mardi Gras world where they have all the old Mardi Gras parade floats. It might be of interest to them.

I've not done the family-friendly New Orleans trip yet, so I'm sure there are those around here who will have far more advice than I.  Now, if you want suggestions on meals and late-night debauchery, I can help you there ;)

There are a lot of reasons - they burn at a more predictable pace and temperature being the main one. Whether or not it makes us pussies is a separate issue.

The only 2 practical reasons I can think of to use the wood for heat are:

1) You think the charcoal introduces an off flavor
2) You think its impossible to get enough smoke using just wood on top of charcoal

I'm certain 2 is false. I haven't done enough comparison to say for sure on 1.

Even more sacrilegious, you can use gas or even electricity for the heat.

I can add a 3rd reason that applies to me:

3) Your father cuts and sells firewood for a living, so you can get all the wood you want for free.

Torrent downloading is good for downloading whole libraries of music at a time.

It's also useful for downloading one song at a time, or..ummm..at least that's what I was told.

Another way to 'get' music off sites like projectplaylist or imeem is to install the download helper add-on to Firefox.  With that, you can also download videos from websites, albeit in FLV form.  A quick search will find you a free FLV player, though, and there are  websites that will convert the FLV files to different file types.

I've faithfully bought each album as it came out.  For me, Ten and Vs are fantastic and I could put them on loop for days on end.  Vitalogy and Pearl Jam are very good.  The rest I simply could not get very excited about.  And then there's the politics...

I can't argue with you about that period between Vitalogy & Pearl Jam.  The records in that time (No Code,  Yield, Binaural, Riot Act) were hit or miss, with seemingly a lot more miss than hit, although there are some songs on those 4 that I like a lot.  It's just those records as a whole can't compare IMO with Ten, Pearl Jam, Vs. or Vitalogy.

I must be the only guy in the world who thinks Pearl Jam is the most ridiculously overrated band since Nirvana.

Granted, I'm a huge fan of the band, but I don't see how they could be considered overrated. A good chunk of people out there think they either a. quit putting out music out in the 90s or b. haven't put out anything worth listening to since Ten, and we all know a. is wrong and IMHO b. is totally wrong.   They don't get undeserving rave reviews for their releases, and the media doesn't fawn all over them like they do bands like Coldplay and U2.  Like I said, I'm obviously biased, but I'd say they're decidedly UNDERrated by the majority of music fans out there who haven't listened to their last few albums or watched/heard a live performance by the band.

Good enough lineup for me.  I was hoping/praying for a PJ headlining spot and I got it.  They haven't played Texas in many a year, so I'm glad to finally have this chance to see em.  After that, I want to see Kings of Leon, Bon Iver, Blitzen Trapper, Arctic Monkeys, Toadies, The Dead Weather, Sonic Youth, Ghostland Observatory,  and Raul Malo among others.

Where do you think HISD gets its funding?

Well, maybe you dont know this. The reason HISD wants kids to go to school every single day (and takes away off days mostly) is because they get a special tax bonus from the state. Also...what the hell are you talking about? The school district is watched by the state.

ISDs in Texas get the majority of their funding from property taxes collected locally.  That's why you had 'rich' districts and 'poor' districts in the past - schools built around industry, schools with a lot of highly valued property in the district, raised a lot more property taxes than other school.

The rest of it comes mainly from the state, but that's only roughly 38-40% of it.  This is where WADA comes into play, which is weighted average daily attendance. Schools get more money from the state based on attendance, but it's a weighted system, meaning students in certain groups are weighted higher than others.

The districts are 'watched' by TEA.

I'm gonna stick to Firefox, even though it IS a memory hog.  I can't upgrade to 3 because for some reason it hangs on the Yahoo home page, and since I use Yahoo mail, that's kind of a problem.  Maybe Firefox just doesn't like me or my laptop for some reason.

I haven't had a single problem with Firefox 3 (or 2 or 1.5...) hanging up on Yahoo.

I've been running FF for a while now, both here at the house and at work in a lab with 24 computers in it.

Smithwick's is starting to show up this side of the pond.  That's a good thing.

I agree.  I can get it at HEB Plus, and they have it on tap at Fado's in Austin.

Once they started making the 40gb & 80gb versions of the PS3, they quit including the "Emotion Engine", which was the processor that enabled for the hardware compatability with the old PS2 games.  For some reason, though, they included a software emulation on the 80gb version, but not the 40gb.

FWIW, sometime in June (I think), they'll be selling an 80gb bundle with the system, a new Dual Shock 3 controller, and Metal Gear Solid 4 for the same price that the 80gb bundle sells for now ($499).

The 8 team playoff isn't perfect, but it should be an upgrade over what we have now.  Plus, it's a step in the right direction.  Maybe down the road they realize 'hey, this does work with 8, let's add a round and make it 16'...

Oh, and if you have a PS3, don't expect to use the Guitar Hero guitar with Rock Band.

That's strange because I know for a fact that you can use GH guitars on the XBox360 version.  We got tired of the Rock Band guitar after about 5 songs and plugged in the GH ones and used those the rest of the time.

From what I could see, the guitar part was just as hard.  There wasn't any song on a level of "Devil Went Down to Georgia" as far as hardness, but it gave my GH expert friend some fits at first.

The drums are pretty tough to get into, but the vocals and bass parts are fun.

Actually it is Jason Lee.  Remember, IMDB is only a click away ;)  (or if you have Firefox running, you can easily add it to your drop down search box).

The fact that Jason Lee continues to find work is mind-boggling to me.  He hasn't made a decent movie since Mallrats and Chasing Amy, and the latter is now ten years old.

Lee did a good job of playing the lead singer in Almost Famous.  He's also perfect in the Earl role on his TV series.

Kids don't ride school buses to these anymore either; 3 games at Kyle Field last weekend and the town was filled with chartered buses.
The kids at my school will be proudly riding the yellow dog down the road to their Regional Championship game Friday night.

Okay, forgive me if this is a bit naive, but money? Really? How much revenue could possibly be generated by gate receipts and concessions? Granted, I'm sure the schools are glad to get it, but are HS football tickets pricey enough to bring in a significant amount of money? And who gets that money since many if not most playoff games are played at neutral sites? If money really is the answer, I would think there would have to be an larger revenue source than just ticket sales and concessions.
Yes, money. It may not be a huge amount of money, but the schools take it.  On many of the sports the schools don't come out 'ahead', but football is the moneymaker.  This Friday we'll be playing in the Regional Championship at a neutral site about 50 miles from our town and 25 miles from the other town.  There will be at least 5-6k fans there, at $8 a pop.  It's not MMP attendance revenue, but it helps.  I don't know the exact formula, but for the neutral site games, I'm sure the two schools playing get equal percentages with a chunk of the gate going to the host school.

But if that's so, why include so many teams in the playoffs in the first place?
To put it quite bluntly:  money.  Football is the main sport that schools can generate revenue in via gate receipts, concessions, etc.  Playoff games generate even more of the same.  The more teams in the playoffs = more money for the schools.

I work at a AAA school, so 3 of the 5 teams in our district made the playoffs.  Interesting note - the Division 1 (big school) team made it to the Regional Finals and the two Division II teams (small school) are playing this coming Friday for their regional title.

We've got a mini dachshund, Butters, and he's a great little dog.  He'll bark in the middle of the night if he sees a fly, but other than that he's very (if not overly) affectionate.  Our other dog, Abby, is a chi-wiener, and she's the best dog we've ever had.  Didn't really have to house train her, and she has a great personality.  Until I get a house with a bigger (fenced in) yard, I can't see ever having a dog other than a dachshund.

All this talk about ACL and beer got me thinking of who is going to Bocktoberfest in Shiner this year.  The lineup includes:

Godsmack
Diamond Rio
Blue October
Pat Green
Old 97s
Restless Heart

October 14th.  I haven't been in a few years.  Anyone planning on going this year?

That was the lineup for last year.  They canceled it this year.

that was my third time to see Patton, and he has been unimpressive each time. he got good results the other two, but he got pounded last night. average FB and flat breaking ball each time i have seen him. hard to think of him as a top of the rotation starter unless he is tired from a long season.

Jim, I watched Patton pitch twice this year in Corpus and I thought the same thing.

Corpus is a great place to watch a game.  Tickets are cheap ($10 will get you field level) and there's pretty much not a bad seat in the place.
