1. Forrest WhitleyThanks. I am a bit surprised at Pens being #3 and Lee cracking the top 10. Javier should be higher IMO.
2. Jose Urquidy
3. Jeremy Pena
4. Abraham Toro
5. Bryan Abreu
6. Korey Lee
7. Rogelio Armenteros
8. Freudis Nova
9. Cristian Javier
10. Jairo Solis
I'd put Urquidy well over Sanchez. Sanchez might even get non-tendered.I agree one both counts.
It will always be a sore spot. Just less sore with time.This.
If they win another one with this team, it might become less significant in context. If this team doesn't win again, it's going to stick out forever.
Of course he was. To think that Jim Crane would give him $46,000,000 in sort of a rush technique (pledge the okay brother to get the one you wanted) is fucking laughable.Does the same argument apply (or not) to Preston Tucker?
I thought that overall the HPU did a very good job. But he missed a few, and they came at critical times.According to the umpire auditor on Twitter, game 7 was the worst ever. 89% or something on correct ball/strike calls. Pretty much even between the teams, but as we all saw, done of the worst calls both ways were at critical points.
Right. He arrived at the ballpark with his mind already made up.I am not sure that was Hudson’s point, but you may both be correct.
A loss is a loss. Losing any Game 6 is ugly, by definition. ...Exactly!
... The Astros have one more game to play. Nothings up to this point matters. Only that game.... which pretty much is the "definition".
To make sure Rendon didn't catch it and double him up.Thought it was already by him. But I guess he had a different camera angle. :-)
... if he signs a contract that is seen as below-market, endless columns will be written about how he has done a disservice to his fellow players. Twitter will buzz, every national broadcast will set it up for debate to fill time before, during and after the game for years. All of that is very real social pressure ...A couple hundred million dollars will go a long way to reducing that social pressure. Think about that for a minute.
Not doubting your remarks are true, but that sort of influence against the wants and wishes of the player is wrong, and turns the law and concept of agency upside down. An agent has a fiduciary duty to his principal (the player) and not to anyone or anything else. This!
Best post on the issue yet. This is the reality and will certainly be a significant factor as Cole weighs his options. Boras and the union have convinced many players to make decisions which were not necessarily the desire, or in the best interest of, the subject player. Not really. All those things are true, but they follow the decision; they do not drive it.
If “historic payday” is the most important thing to him, ok. It certainly was not playing for NYY.I think that may have been the original point. He always wanted to play for the Yankees, but chose the potential payday instead.
Well played, sir. The BBGs are always watching. As are their local agents in place, apparently.
Turns out I can't read: I misread both of those finals (I was looking at the spread; I blame Altuve). Still, it takes a last-second field goal to beat Kansas? That's not going to sit well. And Herman appears to be blaming everyone else for the fact that this team continues. to be. all-world horrible in the basics. He lives and dies by the trick plays, and he is not going to consistently beat anyone if he cannot shake that approach.
I thought he would have had as much of a chance as Springer. I felt Reddick's advantage would have been his having played RF throughout the season. But, if it had been caught then there would have been no Altuve HR. Which to chose?? One would have been awesome and one was awesome. Two roads diverged ...
Correa has a rocket arm.Yep. He just needs to stay away from the massage table.
He's pretty bad. Ted Simmons was bad, but not this bad. Worst in a long time though.I give you Gus Triandos: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/triangu01.shtml
It's a bullpen game for both teams. Severino v Cole if there's a game 7.The Yankees will use Severino today if they think he can stave off elimination. I agree on Cole though.
That would make absolutely zero sense. I can't believe Hinch would play it that way.I stopped reading at “Richard Justice”.
They might try fielding the ball before it stops rolling.I’m fine with their defense just the way it is.
I posted this on April 10. I re-post it solely as a reaction to tonight's game and with full understanding that the series is completely in play.Thanks. A couple of observations:
I'm sure the intent of the question was more like "does having a lead change your approach out there at all, and if so, how?" But it was awkwardly worded.I think you are giving the reporter too much credit here.
Big exhale followed by big gulp of alcohol.Wrong order. And wrong proportions.
Fucking terrible. There have been some terrible strike calls too. Both directions. He really is consistently terrible and utterly unpredictable. The worst.
Props from Jim...I might not post again to maintain my John Paciorekian average (although I'm already breaking it as I type).2 for 2 with that one.
Anyway, love this site and the insights provided, especially during the game.
Which tells you all you'll never need to know about Fox's sports priority.Right. At least give them each their own trenchcoat.
A meaningless Thursday Night Football game ranks higher than the semi-finals for MLB.
Please, MLB, for fuck's sake, sell rights to broadcast your playoff games to a network that isn't run by 3 gibbons in a trenchcoat.
Depends on what happens in the bottom of the 8th.Batting around would be nice.
Hopefully not the dreaded hammy.Looked more like lumbar
Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
God, the first game isn't even over yet and already I'm tired of hearing how fantastic the Yankees are.Hopefully, the BBGs are listening.
The LA Times is reporting that the Dodgers intend to keep Roberts.Good news for the rest of the NL?
This announcing crew is just going to be absolutely stunning during the Yankees series. This is just going to be so unforgettable.I already feel stunned. But that is only because I did not always hit mute quickly enough.
It's a concerted effort to do what it takes. After all, I drank Lone Star and Optimator on Tuesday. So that’s like a.500 batting average then (2.000 slugging).
If I’m Crane and company, I figure out a way to make it work in the Astros’ budget to sign Cole this offseason. Do whatever it takes. I don’t want him pitching in another uniform next season. My hope. And if I’m Cole I would be willing to give up a little (and still make crazy money) to stay with this dynasty in the making.
I am wearing my orange Correa jersey. It's a little too big for me so I cut off the sleeves. It's pretty hideous. I've only ever worn it for Game 7 of the 2017 World Series.Did you cut off the sleeves before that or after?
If you say he's a shitty manager, then you have to admit they've done a pretty decent job succeeding in spite of him. Maybe you want to make the argument he's a good regular season manager and a lousy postseason manager. My hunch is that he's a system manager, and that he's implementing the will of Andrew Friedman.I'll take door #1. A good manager adjusts for situations, including the overall importance of an individual game, which does vary between regular season and post-season, but which also has variations within either. Roberts seems consistently to be wrong-footed by the other manager's moves. The talent on the recent Dodgers teams carries him, but he does not seem to recognize what is happening to him on the chessboard.
Looks like the Cardinals got this one won.It ain’t over til it’s over.
The terms baseball fan and Yankee fan are synonymous. You are not a baseball fan unless you are a Yankee fan. This is the anti-truth.
says this article. https://climbingtalshill.com/2019/10/07/astros-will-harris-elite-player/You say "under", I say "over"; why can't we all get along?
I like the move. Make the Rays beat Greinke, Verlander and Cole in three consecutive games to win the series. If they do that, tip your cap to them.This.
Me three.Piling on as well ...
Girardi just can't help himself. He fills every second of dead air, but has nothing even slightly interesting to say.I muted him a couple of days ago.
I guess it made sense to walk McCann, but it sure backfired big time.I like the Hinch approach to IBBs.
I hate them all year round without any real effort.Right. Just like breathing. I am not sure how to not hate them.
Not unless it's haiku or iambic pentameter. What do you have against dactylic?
when Millie our 9 year old ragdoll rescue cat laid on the couch today it was a good omen as she has a history of laying in the same place during play off games.Sounds more like a hen.
Only slightly less horrible than Gloria.Whoa!! Now yer talkin bout a classic!
I think that Switzerland provides the best European train experience. Hard to imagine a better trip than St. Moritz to Zermatt unless it is the Jungfraujoch loop. I also recommend the Chunnel - not sure why, it felt wierdGeneva to Vienna via Lichtenstein and through the Inn valley is spectacular.
I've been considering doing that. I assume you'd recommend it? What time of season did you go?Berlin to Budapest is great. Mountain passes, rIver gorges, picturesque villages, medieval castles and so much more.
Why would you trust him in a tight game out of the pen which he is not accustomed to?This.
My 2 cents is that he starts or he sits at home.
That's what it sounded like to me...And it's not moving guys around, it's sticking with the rotation. Cole would go Game 1 and possibly Game 5 of the ALDS, and Verlander would go Game 2 of the ALDS and open the ALCS, if they made that far. Whoever opens the ALDS likely will not open the ALCS. One will be Verlander and one will be Cole. Decide who you want where. Of course, I could be wrong. You could be, but (at least in this case) I doubt you are.
I owe you an apology: I didn't follow the link. Now that I have gone back and taken a look, I realize that was a grave error on my part. And I thank you, because over the years I had lost track of where the "sexy, sexy bitch" bit came from, and you have hand-delivered it to me.And i would have missed it again if not for this. Wow.
1962 for me, which was the season before my senior year in HS. Switched my allegiance from the Pirates to the Colt 45s, and here I am. We are in the Golden Age, and long may it last.My Dad & I played a homemade dice baseball game when I was a kid ... taught myself long division keeping stats, which in retrospect may have been my Dad's motivation all along. It did get me an extra recess period in 3rd grade during math class, but I digress. We each "managed" 4 teams in the National League (playing a 42-game round-robin schedule), so when expansion hit I got the Colt 45's (somehow) while he got the Mets. That could not have been geographical, because it was the summer we moved from Michigan to South Carolina. As a side note, an expansion team typically does a lot better in a league that is 100% based on luck. :-) This was also one of two years I got to see the Pirates, my favorite NL team (and my Dad's), in spring training. (My favorite AL team was the Tigers where I saw my first professional baseball games a few years earlier.). In any case, that was the beginning of my dislike of the Mets.
I am flying to Munich out of IAH tomorrow. I need to be able to land in Houston about 3:30 tomorrow afternoon.Oktoberfest?
I actually prefer saltwater fish, we have a lot of mighty fine seafood down here. That you do, and so do I. I’ve never seen barramundi anywhere else. I liked the Moreton Bay bugs, too.
Should clarify perhaps that I was 6 in 86. My first Astros' teams natural rivals were the Cards and Braves. The last time I was rooting for the Braves, Warren Spahn was pitching and some hot shot rookie named Hurricane was supercharging the offense.
Should not have posted thisFIFYearlierever.
I am wondering now is a Cabrera is the biggest sin.... If it's not, what the heck is? (Wouldn't mind finding out b/f I do it.)I think what we are trying to tell you is that your high-volume, low-value posting is the “biggest sin”.
Your help is appreciated,
Snuffy
I heard about that.I thought maybe. :-)
Did not realize y’all talked. I have not read anything like that, but it does not matter. Nothing said before the next decision matters.Dam. The needle on my sarc-o-meter just broke again.
They intentionally beat the shift with stay inside the ball swings. Look for more of that.Exactly. I am surprised it took so long.
These 4 words would have solved all of your problems.+1
.Org showing faith in him.He did not exactly rise to the challenge, but a 7-run 3rd by the good guys took him off the hook (and won the PCL).
Many ofHis posts are head-scratchers for me also.
Guduan was DFAed? No surprise there.Yes. Per MLB transaction page.
ETA: was he?
How the fuck does McHugh get the win and not Biagini?Because the default scorer's judgment is "first guy after the starter" ... or maybe with luck, "first guy to record an out after the starter".
He swing is long and stiff. He did not hit .270. I hope he surprises me in MLB, but I am not expecting him to be a star. It would be nice if he is.Right. And Jason Lane hit about *3*70.
How hard was Bielak throwing?Saw him last outing and he was 95 often. Another grouping at 92/93. Maybe a 4-Seamer and a 2-seamer?
I do, but also don't like wordy posts.Maybe work on fewer.
Will work on shorter ones.
Your question helped me understand the problem was roster-related, not player control. Don't have enough info, time, or interest to suggest roster moves - it's above my pay grade. Just frustrated. It's easy to complain....If you spent as much time thinking about baseball as you spend writing about it, we would all be better off.
Much obliged.
Great points. Forgot that Marisnick was JV's preference. (Does Cole have a choice, other than the catcher?)
Agree that no matter what the bottom 1/3 did, JV was doomed by two gopher balls combined w/ the top 6 in the order not named Brantley being shut down. It did not help that desperate base running killed a potential rally and ended the game w/ two outs at 3B in the 8th & 9th.
Did not mean to suggest that having Tucker replace Marisnick would have turned the game - not at all likely. As much as Jack is a pleasure to watch tracking flies in the OF, it is hard to watch him waste ABs by chasing sliders, etc. out of the zone.
We were spoiled during the 1st half of the year w/ a healthy Correa (fond memories) and Reddick. If memory serves, even Chirinos was hitting.
DFA Brady Rodgers per Chandler Rome tweetConfirmed per MLB transactions.
Keep an eye on Valente Bellozo - 19 Year old RHP from Mexico jumped from DSL last year to NYPL this year. Through 1st 4 outings (17 1/3 IP) he has a 1.04 ERA with 20 Ks, 6 hits, 6 walks - a 0.69 whip. He is over 2 years younger than league average age.I think he just got the call to QC too.
He's played both 3b and 2b. More 3b than 2b though. But more 2B recently than earlier. Working on versatility, but he is no SuperJack. .
I'd like to nominate the previous 9 posts in this thread. /// retreats back to the shadows ///+1 (or maybe +9)
Wasn't that a perfect fit w/ the Colt .45's?Don’t broadcast your age.
to date, the Astros have issued zero intentional walks this season. That has never happened over a full season. You have earned a citation for driveling in the bus lane.
Brett Phillips gets the call from KC. Billy Hamilton released.Good for him. I enjoyed his time in the .org.
I was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan as a kid, but when they went to LA, I dropped them. That year was Elroy Face’s 18-1 year, and I started following them because of him. In 1960, I was with them from the first pitch of ST to Mazeroski’s homer to win the WS. That 1960 Pirates team was my all time favorite team until 2017.Similar story here (except the Dodgers part). I loved the Pirates and that 1960 team was the greatest. Saw them in ST the next year. Mazeroski & Groat (assist from my dad) taught me how to watch and appreciate infield play. And Elroy Face was one of my favorites.
Pressly outing today is concerning. I did not mind the walk to Abreu, but 0-2? We also have not seen Osuna since Sunday so no way to know if he has bounced back.Amen and amen!
The defense today was the worst part for me.
That catch is why Straw needs to stop playing the infield. This catch for those who missed it: https://twitter.com/astros/status/1161462791498346496?s=21
He'll probably be a bit old for the league.Oops.
He is an excellent defender. The bat is still questioned. He puts up similar numbers next season and pudnits will take notice.This.
JimR -He has not really “skipped” AA. He is on his 2nd or 3rd short stint in RR firing a season played st A ball. He will probably spend 3020 at AA.
How did Castellanos look last night? A 21 year old who skipped AA.
... I was stupid tired before it ended.
does he primarily play corner IF? I was wondering if he had Rojas' versatility?3rd, 1st & 2nd — a lot of 2nd lately.
Seems like it to me. Why would the Mets do this?Sort of a two-part approach to a three-way deal? They can now trade Snydergard for Tucker & Fisher and a box of bolts and declare success.
Believe the Astros announcers mentioned a spike to his hand in the "slide".Kicked in the elbow. He says he is fine. Hinch says “we’ll see”.
If arguing about the 25th man is a good sign, how good is arguing about the 30th?
I just did admittedly imperfect research and found only one game at SS in 2018. I know how infrequently he played SS at RR in 2019. No doubt he took a million ground balls and listened to instruction about playing SS, but for him to be starting at SS for the Astros and holding his own in a pennant race is an amazing feat.
They might have had the idea in 2018, but part of one game is less than minuscule for such a demanding position. He was thrown in to see if he could handle it.
Thanks for your detailed knowledge, Duman. I was not misinformed after all.
Is that Tucker?Yes.
You are 100% right about Tucker. He has not made many friends. And I was just looking at July splits. .216/.365/.314 with 1 HR, 10 RBI & 16 K in 63 PA. Not exactly eye-popping.
Capps is very high on Rojas. He looks like he can play.
I've seen him play a few times, and he always seems to have quality ABs and plays respectable defense. But he and Mayfield have the same problem: where are you going to put them.
Kemp and Straw are very similar players, except for the RH/LH hitting thing.Well. I’m gonna have to disagree with you on that one. Speed, power, OF defense (especially the arm) are all differences, with a significant edge to Straw except power where Kemp has the edge.
I'm with you. Don't usually go for the commemorative stuff, but this is one I want. I also think the ASG caps with the stripes are magnificent. No need to boost attendance on a Saturday. $$
Our of curiosity, have the Astros said why they didn't have the moon landing party on Saturday...you know, the anniversary of the actual moon landing?
Peacock says he's feeling good and plans to start throwing soon. https://twitter.com/brianmctaggart/status/1152324928764465152“Oim naught dead yet!”
It doesn't sound that convincing though.
You were better off staying realistic.Realistic? In a thread discussing Rondon as a starter? No chance.
I wish I were talented and rich. Why not include “young” for the trifecta?
Strikeout rate was pretty good.I do not think he was pitching to contact there.
Any word on Bregman?Showed up late and wondered why Straw was dubbed in the box score. What happened?
POTWIf only ...
and because they are being stubborn with Alvarez and 1B, there is no backup for Gurriel without White. He has been very good on defense. I think he is on the roster until Diaz returns.I woNder if it is more than stubbornness. Easy for a big guy to pull a hammy playing 1B and not having the experience to stretch with restraint.
And they are bringing him up to the majors. They should. He has nothing he can really prove at AAA. This is either a wake up call or good night moon.
Exactly my thinking. They are gonna kick that can down the road until they absolutely have no choiceSo ... until Thursday then?

A Kemp-Alvarez outfield isn't exactly great defensive comboRight. A couple f rag-arms. At least Kemp doesn’t look lost, though. He covers the ground and throws to the correct base.

Berkman hates the "check swing" strike. Says if it's not a full swing all the way through, it shouldn't count. What could possibly go wrong with that thinking? We would end up with cricket.
He was raking at AA at the time of the trade. Hader was not yet what he is today.Philips was raking but Hader even at the time was the more important loss. I expect the bus ride archives would validate my memory.
Why don't you try actually answering a question instead of trying out your snark? We understand you are good at that.WFW
I remember Cole saying that they hadn't been approached and that they would welcome any conversation. I guess that's not your memory.
ETA: https://www.chron.com/sports/astros/article/Gerrit-Cole-says-no-current-contract-talks-with-13709570.php
That's the last I saw of it.
Either way, I take it you aren't concerned with Cole on the bump in the postseason and don't think the Astros are either. Fair 'nuff.
The thought of trying to swing a bat with broken ribs makes me want to curl up in the fetal position and cry, except that would hurt too much. It was every bit as debilitating for me as lumbar/disc problems. Way more painful than when I blew out my knee.I hope you at least enjoyed the “massage”.
The list of arms stronger than Correa's may not exist. The list exists ... it is just empty.
Corbin Martin to the DL, being evaluated for elbow pain. Not good [/obvious]
I want a life where I can watch Comedy Central and FX all day and be tempted by boner placebos.Well ... that and read threads with titles like “Nugenix”.
I'd guess Armenteros goes down as well then.I agree. And with Super Jack gone, they probably need someone besides Bergman & White who has ever played SS, so Straw stays. We do NOT want to see this version of White at SS.
They should add Monterrey to the schedule, call themselves the NAFTAs, and change divisions whenever they shift cities.I like it, but NAFTA should replace the city, not the mascot — the NAFTA Nomads.

Over-analyze? Really? Okay, tell me the sacred cows on the team so I'll never mention them again in any post. You guys are thin-skinned.Well ... now that you mention it, please do not go off on Julio Gotay's lack of power or advanced age.
Saw that earlier. Not exactly promising running there. But maybe just wasn't busting it, idkIt was a lazy fly ball that the LF lost sight of — let it drop 35 yards away and had to chase it down.

Done.thanks
To be fair, the article Snuffy is responding to is only a month and a half old.Why would we start being fair now?
Blame it on the HC that won't let the topic die, as long as it will attract attention.Unfortunately, i can put the HC on ignore, but it does little good if you break a year-long silence here to drudge it up again.
Besides, there's a PS in the post that ties to this topic which might be considered in a different light with a year behind the signing..
My stab at the fully healthy potential lineup is
Springer
Altuve
Bregman
Brantley
Correa
Alvarez
Gurriel
Chirinos(or Reddick)

In my opinion, Keuchel is a descending player. We got the best of him. His stuff is, and always has been, marginal.This.
Maybe a change of scenery will help, but I doubt it. If you are a malcontent playing for the Astros, it is unlikely that you can be happy anywhere.Wherever you go, there you are.
Sarc meter malfunctioning?Yours or mine?

He has been playing SS in RR. OF some, SS some.Time split this year almost equally between CF & SS, but never before as a pro.
How did Straw do at short?Awkward and adequate.
One of the beat reporters tweeted yesterday that Hinch thought Straw was more nervous yesterday than he was for his MLB debut.This. I think he knows that his spot is in the OF.
Nervous as hell no doubt. But the nerves did not affect him in the OF. Willie Mays played some SS too, but we all know how that ended. Myles is an adequate emergency option, but I am hoping that most of his PT is in the OF.
Straw is starting at shortstop tonight. And still looks like a great outfielder. Some good plays, but too exciting on routine throws to 1B.
Rojas kinda flies under the radar but I think he will play in the MLs a long time. The Astros seem to have a patent on the process for developing these uber-utility players. Rojas, De Goti, Duarte, Angarita, E.Valdez, Hensley, T.Dawson, Dennis & Wielansky are all at various levels in the minors with multiple position exposure. And even Freudis Nova, the hot-shot SS getting his first taste of full season ball, is seeing all three IF positions regularly.
When I first saw the first and third play on which the fourth run scored, my first thought was “WTF is the SS doing?” Why did he throw home instead of turning two to end the inning?” TK said this on his pbp. Perhaps some or many of you thought the same thing. But after watching the replay several times, I changed my mind, and Stanton voiced my current opinion in the postgame show.
The catcher was the one at fault. With a runner at third and one out, he cannot assume a double play attempt and leave the plate uncovered. Think Bregman and McCann in Game Seven against NYY. The Seattle SS had to charge the ball slightly to his right and was moving diagonally away from second base. Right or wrong, he made the judgment he did not have time to stop, plant, turn, and get the DP to end the inning and to keep the run from scoring. Like Bregman in the ALCS, he threw home to cut off the run which he thought would score if he tried for a DP. The catcher had no business vacating the plate in that situation, and the runner coming from third would have been out. The SS looked foolish throwing to an uncovered base, but the error in judgment was the catcher’s.
I think that within the next 2 weeks, Yordan Alvarez will be the primary DH and White will be in Miami or Baltimore or somewhere like that.Yes. And I wish him well. White is a great story who has consistently exceeded expectations, and I would love to see him benefit from the much-needed change of scenery.

Excellent observation, and it is certainly in line with my thoughts as well. I've seen lots of both AA and AAA ball. AAA has become a storing place for "insurance policy" players, e.g., the third catcher, backup starting pitching, etc., while most of the real prospects are at AA.This has been true for a very long time. Hot prospects and marginal ones fighting to keep hope alive populate AA. AAA has a few blocked prospects and a lot of AAAA insurance players.
... Alcohol may have been involved. Before, during or after?
I know. A nice problem to have. I hope Mayfield and Fisher make Luhnow’s decision REALLYFIFYdifficulteasy.

I doubt it. I think he is replacing Diaz.Exactly.
This is so great.+1. I hoped/expected the move but nice to see. Jack seems to be a genuinely nice guy, too.
Justice clearly wasn't watching what all the rest of us were watching.Which is surprising HOW?
Agree about Mayfield.Me too. I actually thought they might lose him in the rule 5. He looks good at all three IF positions and handles the bat well with some pop. He would at least be a valuable extra piece in a trade, I think.
From a friend. Whitley is throwing Thursday, I think. It is also pretty easy to track the rotation on MILB.com -and they usually post probables early in the day.
ETA: Sorry, that was Ryan. I wasn’t paying much attention to Ryan. I was trying to find a good hotel in Portugal.Just out of curiosity, where in Portugal? I can recommend a good one in Cascais and a couple to avoid in Faro and Lisboa.
And McKenna back too.Back on the DL, actually.
Glad we won the first two before Sale.Ace Hardware has a Sale on brooms. Just sayin’.
Well, that's better than the other way around, I suppose.Amen. Though White did make that pop-up a little too exciting for out 1.
Who is "we" white man?"We" may know this already, but I was looking at the stats today and noticed that Tucker & Alvarez have the same number of May HR. Whooda thunk?
I hope he keeps killing it and is the centerpiece for a playoff starter.
If they can get anything at all for Fisher, they ought to do it, pronto.This. And for Tucker, maybe a bit more.
Unless you’re in politics.Good point. Or maybe sales.

Funny, I don't recall the haters ever walking back their criticism of Crane/Luhnow & Co.It is always hard to remember stuff that never happened.
There is still at least a little bit of skill involved in being a good first baseman.Indeed. Think Dick Stuart. But almost anyone can make the normal plays, and “normal” seems to be more normal at 1B.
I think that's a mis-read on what the Astros are doing. They are trying to maximize any versatility he might have. With the big club they want him to be able to play LF, 1B, and DH not just 1B and DH. The more he can do defensively the more Hinch can mix and match the lineup.Exactly ... He is not going to get any better at 1B, but he might get better in LF with more time there. Thus the AAA duty in LF.
Did the Astros ever make an offer for him to turn down? I don’t remember one being reported. They traded for Diaz very early last offseason to replace him, so I guess it is possible he didn’t engage in discussions and the team quickly moved on. But I do not remember anything like that being reported.I expect he made his financial demands known and the Astros moved on.
[/snip]+1
White is striking out a ton (34% of all PAs). And he hasn't shown any power this season. I've been a big supporter of White, but he doesn't look good at the plate at all.
I don't think anyone is disputing that Laureano could fill a similar role, it's just responding to the original comment that the Astros somehow missed the boat on him and it calls into question their ability to judge talent. He's got value, but he's not the kind of player who pushes people out of his way, and he simply wasn't an upgrade.Exactly. And as one who haunts the bus ride section, I was sorry to see him go ... but more for sentimental reasons than because of anyone's inability too judge talent. And I also like Bailey!
Insightful. Never said that's what I'd want, but *if* they had chosen to keep Laureano, the 4/5 OFer, all-world glove, suspect bat with some pop, PR role would seem to make the most sense. They're very similar players.Who’s counting? I forget which step this is.
Five-year, $10M contract offer on its way.Been there; Done that.

Jayne is reporting that Tyler Ivey may be serving a team suspensionIvey is officially listed on the 7-day Injured List ... for what that is worth.
What is the argument for keeping Alvarez at AAA?Make some think of the old riddle ... what is the difference between Michael Jackson & Reggie Jackson?

As long as there is no strike happening that day. They fucked me once taking it from London to Heathrow and I missed my flight. The Heathrow Express to Paddington is well worth the expense. And there area host of relatively affordable hotels within walking distance of the station (even with luggage).
You can drink the tap water.
He wasn't exactly missing wildly, few inches off the plate mostly. Little bit of time with Brent Strom and I think it'll be ironed outA little work would not hurt, either. Only 2 outings (3 IP) at RR before being recalled. He did have 1 BB & 1 WP to go with 6 K there, but I expect he will get straightened out.
Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk
I read a short interview with Hinch where he said Tucker needed a ‘B’ swing for certain situations and they were working with him on that.If so, that may explain his RR numbers. It will be interesting to look at monthly splits.
Aren't the Astros on record stating they have no intentions of altering Tucker's swing? I don't know how he hits with that loop, but the numbers are there at every level so far (except the one that matters).FWIW, I agree. I just don't understand.
I wouldn't be concerned with his output yet, Slow starts seem to be in his DNA.
Has anyone who's been to a game have a scouting report on Tucker? His spring training scuffling seems to have carried over into the season. I know small sample size and all that, but I'm almost wondering if he's hurt.Only saw him in the Hooks exhibition, but he still looks stiff with a long swing to me — more like a tennis stroke. If it was something that obvious, though, smarter baseball minds than mine would have given up on him long ago.
JV is a student of his profession. He'll zero in on it.That was a perfect slide and a heads-up play. If he comes in straight he is out.
I enjoyed Tyler White's attempt to slide and slap the plate. He popped up like a weeble wobble.
What a way to start the series. W in the books.Becoming a habit. Let’s make this one more like the Oakland series and less like the other two.
If the powers-that-be determine that an umpire deliberately missed calls out of spite, he should be immediately fired - permanently. The whole "Integrity of the Game" thing.I don’t know how you determine that he deliberately missed calls. That part was incompetence. I am referring to his attitude and deliberate attempt to stir up trouble over his bad calls.
Wrong forum, I know, but on this night of no-hitters I just thought I'd mention that the trio of FarmStros starters gave up 1 hit in 12IP tonight. And 4 Woodpeckers gave up only 1 hit (& a bunch of walks) in their 15-0 win.
That was much more than bad umpiring last night. That was deliberately dishonest umpiring.This. Beyond incompetence or inconsistency. That kind of behavior should be suspension-worthy, and repeated offenses should involve lengthier suspensions.
I’m watching on Fubo, no outageU-verse 1/697 has it.

Jayne has updated list of minor transactions including recent releasesFascinating ... I was just doing my annual attempt to forecast MiLB assignments and most of those guys (and only a few others) had me completely stumped. Luis Encarncion was the only real surprise, though I did have Carlos Hiraldo pretty confidently slated for Fayetteville. The fact that the organization already had him at AA may have played a part in their decision ... up or out.
Am I the only one who thought this was an update on Mr. Towles?I had forgotten about the rodeo clown.
That took entirely too long to get posted. We were all deferring to Ole JR.
Might be versatility - Framber can give them a start if they need it.This. Peacock & McHugh as 40% of the rotation may mean plenty of relief innings early.
This place is interesting. As an out of towner I was thrilled to find a really smart Astros baseball community.Be patient. He grows on you.
Until I had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with good ole Jim R - the proverbial internet tough guy.
JR decides who has the right to speak her. He demands credentials. He needs posts to be appropriately worded.
He doesn't need anyone else to contribute. He is MR CONTRIBUTOR.
I had this crazy ass notion that being the fan of the same team made it OK for 'outsiders' to post here.
But no, good ole JR just wants to play a colossal game of dick out deciding who gets to talk Astros baseball and who doesn't.
So when I mention at 10pm at night that I saw Verlander was in final stages of contract negotiation, and I look at the headlines and don't see it
mentioned, I figured what the hell, no one could possibly find fault with me sharing that insight.
Wrong.
Good ole JR decided that he had to attack even that innocuous post. Personally.
You guys have a helluva website. And I know you are a tight knit community, so leaving this here isn't going to make any friends.
But it truly sucks that one tired, bitter old man can spew his shit with immunity.
Good Ole JR, kiss my internet loving As-tros. goodnight.
I don’t think much shortstop is in Toro’s future. He’s not a Marwin or even a Marwin-lite as a defender.Exactly. Above average at 3B. No reason he couldn’t learn 1B. But SS would be a stretch.
Ok. I thought at one time I remembered 1B being his natural position. Perhaps next season Gurriel transitions to DH and Alvarez takes over at 1B??DH is his only natural position. His glove is adequate at 1B but don’t count on much in the way of range or fielding bunts. In LF he will make routine flies a lot more interesting.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You took me way too literally. Toro is a switch-hitter like Marwin and provides that sort of lineup versatility like Marwin did. For a DH-type or even corner man, that makes him valuable. So, given that, I'll take back my "heir apparent" to Marwin because it probably confused many of you. I still see the value of Toro for this team with his ability to hit from both sides and eventually provide corner infield help and also be a DH option. We will leave it at that. Like Tanielu, Toro would eventually become a much better option than White in his career. I like White but I see limitations in his abilities and once the league figures out how to pitch him, he will be hamstrung to help this team at DH and as a 1st baseman, he's average at best. I won't lie, I was shocked he reported to camp looking very pudgy. Is he serious about wanting to win a job or did he think he had a spot locked up, because I don't think that was wise.I totally missed the switch hitter component of flexibility. I agree completely. Sorry for focusing only on defense.
He's already played nearly 10 innings at 1B in games this spring.Right. The ST experiment. 1 whole inning so far. White started over 20 games each at SS and 2B a few years ago and was surprisingly adequate. As HH noted, he is Brot an MLB candidate there bless he loses weight again, but he has the basic skills and instincts.
White is in no way, shape, or form a Major League SS or 2B.I agree. But he gets a LOT of PT at both in the minors. The .org at least sees versatility as within the limits of his abilities.
Thanks for the pick-me-up. Yes on Tanielu being much more versatile on defense. All the more reason I'd personally have him higher on making the final 25 than I would Tyler White. Toro needs just more seasoning to be more consistent, but as you mentioned, he's limited like White, to two infield position at this time. But I like the prospect of his bat from both sides providing solid power contact in the future.Umm you know that White has played all 4 infield positions with some regularity, right? And even a surprising amount at SS.
As I understand it, Tanielu's dad was born in Samoa so let's call him of Samoan descent (unless you want to go down the ethnological rabbit hole of examining the ties between Samoans and Maoris). Tanielu's only personal ties to New Zealand were having played for the Auckland team in the ABL this winter.I agree (mostly). Toro has been at 3B exclusively after giving up at C. Corner infield is his role. Tanielu has played a lot of 3B & 2B with some 1B & OF. Definitely more Marwinesque.
I like both Toro and Tanielu but as far as an heir apparent to Marwin if you mean ability to play multiple positions, I think that's probably Tanielu rather than Toro. Toro to me looks more like a 1B/3B type while Tanielu perhaps could play 4 positions (2B, 1B, LF, maybe 3B).
I do blame Bregman. His ego is and will be a continuing potential problem. Second highest to Correa is good. Wait your fucking turn, and STFU.This. His silly stare and cockiness really wore thin last year. Please let him get back to his lovable self and just play!

Uh, no. He does not “play a good OF.”Beat me to it.
You'd think he and Reed could bring something useful back.Agree — two projects with potential, but with little enough chance for success that there should be no room for them in the Astro org.

Dayum. That guy has some wheels.Saw him in two games at the Dell Diamond last year (as a visitor) and he made great catches and great throws in both. Can't wait to see him more often this year (assuming, of course, that he does not play his way onto the 25-man).

No, it's the prior inning's final batter. Is that a change? I did not think I was asleep while scoring. But maybe I was.
I had no idea. Saw a few minor league games, but no extra innings. Can you use anyone, or are the eligibility rules like regular pinch-runner rules? It is the inning’s leadoff batter.
I give you: the Hunter Pence Scouting Report Generator.A classic.
I think we all got a pretty good exchange rate on that post. Thanks for taking the time.
Just my dos centavos.
Reddick will be 32 and is coming off a mediocre season, with $26m still owed for 2019-2020. I think the Astros would have to eat over half of that money to get someone to take him. I wondered if the Braves were an option, since he's a Georgia boy and they historically love their local players, but then they re-signed Markakis.Does he have a ranch in Athens or Rome or somewhere?
What have I to dread, what have I to fear, leaning on the everlasting arm? This one came up yesterday morning and I had a little trouble staying on topic.
I don't think they were lying. I believe the O's and Nats owners nixed those deals. But it was definitely a PR move for Crane/Luhnow to share that info. I'm sure there are plenty of nixed-deals around baseball where one team could make another team look bad or foolish by sharing what happened, but they don't.Well then! As long as you are sure ...
Is this just so they can sell tickets to the Berkman & Oswalt induction days?Duh.
No DH, and please do not say Tyler White.“Tyler White”
It'll come down to where he's drafted in the NFL.Which is also why this is going on now ... NFL teams who want him may need to draft him higher to be able to compete with baseball. Or they might just do the smart thing and pass.
Baker Mayfield made around $500,000 per game this season.
Dak Prescott (4th round pick, 3rd year) made around $600,000 for the season.
That's all dictated by the CBA. If Murray is a high first rounder he'll make serious bank quickly, and likely play quickly as well.
(This may be the lone exception where the NFL's CBA compares favorably from a player's perspective to MLB's)
That was good but would never play today. How about renaming the team the "2nd Amendment"?
Fuck. Take Cole to a hearing? We should want to extend him, not fight with him.Maybe they are talking about that in the meantime?
Does Ensberg not count as an ex-Astro?Double counts, actually.
Luis Santana enters the MLB Pipeline Top 30 list at #22. OF Ross Adolph, one of the other prospects coming in the JD Davis trade, added at #30. Pitchers Brandon Bailey and Brett Adcock dropped off the list.Seems to me they lose credibility when they do this ... Bailey & Adcock were 27 & 28 before the trade. How did the trade affect their prospect status such that they fell below Peña & McKenna?
From Chandler:These guys were apparently not the centerpieces, but solid lower-level performers who fill needed roster slots ... Manea in Fayetteville gives Nathan Perry more time to develop, and Adolph probably lands in QC where there is plenty of space.
The Astros traded J.D. Davis and Cody Bohanek to the Mets for minor leaguers Ross Adolph, Luis Santana and Scott Manea.
...
Scott Manea is a catcher who was a Single-A All Star last season. Ross Adolph is a 2018 draftee, outfielder, who was his team MVP in short season ball.
I do not know who “everyone” is, but Luhnow has consistently said he wants to add a bat.Which is why I expect a rotation addition.
The reason this is huge is because you're losing McHugh to the starting rotation. So Houston is losing two bullpen arms this offseason. Do they need to sign an arm? Not necessarily, but it does mean Peacock is now going to be depended upon more often as a bullpen arm aka 2017. Maybe Rondon and Harris as well. Use a young arm in the long relief man role and you don't need to panic... just yet. Maybe at the trading deadline though. Hence why you need payroll flexibility.Color me optimistic ... there are a bunch of guys in AAA that could fill a bullpen role effectively IMO. Guduan, Deetz, C.Perez, Rodgers, maybe McCurry among others.
Brantley is a high-contact guy. That is huge in post-season.What a difference a day makes.
...and, 200+ innings. Although, since it was a walk year, I'm sure he would have pitched until his arm fell off to make that number.
I was thinking about him a bit yesterday. I'm not convinced that his performance last year was decreasing control. He lives (and dies) at the bottom of the zone so much and his big bump and BAA and # of hits (highest in all of the AL last year) can probably be explained away by him coming up (and ever so slightly in) in the zone. His heat maps are not representative of someone loosing control (overall diameter increase, significant increase in core diameter) but instead shows a tightening of the core. Instead, they indicate an intentionality to go a bit up and in. I'm wondering if this is 1) because he's lost the bottom of the zone to the umps (no longer getting the benefit of the doubt 3 years removed from his Cy campaign) and 2) trying to jam the uppercut swingers inside. He did a good job on #2 but the soft contact dribblers generated by #1 were death by 1,000 cuts.
"I want salty, greasy food delivered to my laz-y-boy 3 meals a day and chocolate cake for my two snacks" leads to poor outcomes. Because, you know, the customer dies pretty quick.
Mike Elias and the Orioles claimed Rio Ruiz off waivers from the Braves.Good luck to him.
The pitcher is not banned from hitting. No, but the pinch hitter is allowed to come to the plate multiple times over multiple innings without affecting the pitcher's ability to stay in the game. Thus, a "change".
I specifically said NOT THE SHITBIRDS!Exactly like that. Yes.
It's like none of those involved paid attention.
When you add beans to chili, it is no longer chili. If you change the game than it ceases to be the game.See hitter, designated
Incredible if they can pull it off --- who would move? They will not separate the Stros & stRangers
Chicago White Sox move to Portland? --- and does that mean the Stros move to the AL Central?
Unless there is going to be two more expansion franchises.
As long as he promises to take dumbass Hager with him. This!
Would Luhnow bring Fiers back? He is a useful SP on a staff that has some holes.Reality check on aisle 5.
All 11 arb-eligible players will get tendered, says Luhnow on Astroline. Qualifier: that's the plan "at this point".Operative phrase, apparently, was "at this point"
The Astros have non-tendered Herman. Little doubt now that a move for a catcher is in the works.
...
I like that name as well but between what I suspect could be a trademark issue (there was an Abilene Prairie Dogs back in 1997 in the now-defunct TX-Louisiana League) and simply the fact that such a name lacks the weirdness factor that baseball marketing types are so in love with these days (New Orleans Baby Cakes, Rocket City Trash Pandas, Hartford Yard Goats, etc.). I like weird but some of these names come across as trying too hard. They are this generation’s answer to the throw-back Oakland A’s uniforms.
The trend of ever so quirky team names in minor league baseball had already passed its sell-by date but reached it's absolute nadir with today's announcement from the Panhandle: the Padres' affiliate will be known as the "Sod Poodles". Somehow the nickname the team chose is even more cringe-inducing: the "Soddies".I am really eager to see Limey weigh in on this one.
Some exes who are MLFAs:I would not mind seeing Pena or Perez back in the system.

Delayed announcement made today: it's the Woodpeckers.Yes. North Carolina Peckerwoods. What were they thinking? (Or dinking??)
Peckers, peckerheads, dick-stomping...endless possibilities there.
Hey, Roster Resource is moving in the right direction: they've added Rule 5 status info and on first look it appears to be reasonably accurate. The only downside is they don't list all players in the system. But still...progress.I think they have had that for much of the season, though it does look like the off-season layout makes it clearer.
I wonder if they had concerns about his surgery recovery.

Has to be the reason.I agree.
Leading 1-0 with two out in the 9th, the Yankee starter is still in the ballgame with three HOFers (Mays, McCovey, and Cepeda) due up. Something tells me Dave Roberts would not have let him finish the game.Yes. I took that as the point of the story. Not the line out.
For a time, that team also included Orlando Cepeda, Jim Ray Hart, and the Alou brothers. Quite a lineup.... and a few interesting pitchers, too ... headed by some guy named Marichal.
You don't have to shovel heat. This!

If you had bottom of the 1st, Game 4, for the first "Joe West moment" of this series, you win.
I was particularly interested to hear about the White/Kemp DH platoon the Astros have been using all season.Right. Better to remain silent than to open your mouth and prove to everyone that you are clueless.
Good news: BG and everybody else with Game 5 tickets are in the money now!Mixed blessing.
That, and the bats going silent after Marwin's HR.4 runs should be enough.

The Astros have already gotten the best of Dallas Keuchel. I would not re-sign him, even at a discount, unless that discount was the league minimum.+ (another) 1
I agree, I'd be extremely surprised if he didn't spend most of his year at RR (yes!!), to get experience and to show that he can actually stay healthy for an extended periodI agree ... though it may just be wishful thinking!
I assume it was a matter of getting either James or Harris in, but they weren't going to get both. Hinch seems hell bent on getting Harris innings.Hoping he will turn it around? I may be wrong, but I think that may have been his audition for the next round.
Like Kemp, White is out of options. If they're both on the OD roster, then you're making the bet on both that they'll remain on the 25-man roster the entire year. I like both players and aren't advocating for getting rid of them but I can see a possible scenario over the winter where Luhnow trades 'em because (A) they may be at their maximum trade value (B) better to get something for them now rather than run the risk of losing them later and get nothing in return and (C) as part of a package targeting MLB-ready player(s) to being received in return who have options remaining.This.
I dunno, really. But I do know I'm very happy Bauer got the loss. Fuck Tyler.This.
BSC Young Boys out of Bern, Switzerland.Ahhh ... I got confused by the Juventus reference I guess. Carry on.
Okay Champions League and (obviously) not World Cup...I think it is Italian, no? Torino?
There's really a Swiss football club called "Young Boys"?
Seriously?
That means 2:05 am local time, guess I better check my alarm clock is working...A comfortable 8:05pm for me. :-)
I never thought much of Mier but I was always surprised that Jonathan Meyer didn't amount to more than he did.I was not impressed by either spelling. A scrub by any other name ...
With regard to the Rule 5 draft and the 40-man roster these players contracts are up following the post-season: Keuchel, Morton, Sipp, McCann, Gonzalez, Gattis.I think there is an issue with using those spots to protect guys from the Rule 5 draft if they are planning on re-signing any of the FA's. I am a but fuzzy on waiver rules, but I recall the Pirates losing a couple of highly regarded prospects
Also, these players are out of options: Stassi, White, Kemp.
That's nine 40-man roster spot question marks going into the off-season with multiple players from Nate's list that could reasonably be added.
*Braces for 6-error game.*I really wish you had not said that.

Nick Tanielu continued his hot hitting over the last month or so, going 2-4 with a homer last night as Fresno took the 1st game of the playoff series with El Paso. And another long ball tonight.

Something bad wrong with Devo.Agree.
Not sure about the Kile connection, JimR. He did pitch much better in his last years w/ the Cards.RMPL
Here's hoping that Preston is able to get back on track w/ the Braves in spite of Duval's presence. He was hitting .254 w/ the Braves b/f the trade.

Roster Resources has a MiLB Top 200 Power Rankings (3rd year they've been doing this) which is "based on 2018 regular season performance with age and level being major factors in how each statistical category is weighted". Astros' minor leaguers on that list that don't show up elsewhere:Thanks for posting this.
- 67. INF Josh Rojas
- 106. LHP Ryan Hartman
- 127. 1B Taylor Jones
https://www.rosterresource.com/milb-power-rankings/
Wrongly, of course (milb.com still has never reflected the offsetting roster move). Bukauskas for BC today wasn't at this best with too many walks (4) in 5 IP though he whiffed 8. He also gave up a gopher ball, just his first allowed in 53 innings this year.Looks like his offense bailed him out with 7 runs in the bottom of the 1st and he settled down after that.
The club dropped the season finale today to finish one game under .500.And Ramirez promptly up to TC where he pitched well tonight.
The only player of note offensively was SS Freudis Nova who finished .308/.331/.466. The team OPS ranked next to last in the 18-team league.
Like every other affiliate, the pitching staff were the stars ranking 3rd in the GCL with a 1.30 WHIP. Besides 2nd round pick Jayson Schroeder (who walked 9 in 18 innings), a trio of 17/18 year-old Dominican righties are probably the names to know. Manny Ramirez had a 46/15 K to BB in 34 IP. Previously-noted Ernesto Jaquez finished with 70 Ks vs 14 Ws in 53 combined IP between the GCL/DSL while allowing just 19 hits. And Alfredi Jimenez's numbers in the DSL/GCL weren't too far behind: 55.1 IP / 35 H / 13 BB / 63 K.
How do you know this? Hinch’s Pre-game conversation was all about his leg. He said earlier the thumb will be sore for the rest of the season.Well - of course I do not *know* but everything I had seen was a concern about his thumb. I missed Hinch’s comment but even the in-game references were thumb. I guess we file this under #fakenews
I thought Springer's current problem was a leg issue? Which would preclude him pinch-running.No. His quad is better. His thumb not so much.
Last year's 14th rounder OF Carlos Diaz suspended 56 games for PED use. He was batting .202/.278/.221 this year after putting up relatively similar numbers last year.Sounds like a case of “nothing to lose”.
And back down again to the Hooks. And Marisnick is in CF leading off for the Griz tonight.

Some of Springer’s swings the last couple of games he played definitely looked uncomfortable. Because of that, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was true. One the other hand, if he is hurt this badly why not go ahead and DL him rather than playing a man short on the bench in the middle of a tight race? And the “retroactive” clause means he will be back in less than 10 days.So how true is this article??
I’ve spent the last 24 hours wondering how they are going to get McCann on the active roster when he is ready. For a team that overall is struggling offensively, I think it would be really difficult to send either Kemp or White back down. Unfortunately, Springer to the DL may be the way it happens.

No doubt it’s improved since Lancaster. I wonder if the time at Corpus was just an off day for him.Could be. He was good then, I just don't think it was as sharp as it is tonight.
How many times did you see him?Twice. Corpus earlier this year when the family was at the beach, and his one start at Lancaster a couple of years ago when I was in LA on business.
I'll take the overGood on ye.

Wait wait wait. A walk and a single with nobody out... there might be a thing starting. Also, Altuve took 2 pitches in 1 AB.
Presumably Stassi has experience framing Framber.I doubt it ... Valdez has been in AA until the last couple of weeks.
Themselves+1 ... followed closely by the booth team and the BBGs.
Peacock just couldn’t put guys away. And its Framber time.
They just cannot stop talking about the Astros winning the division. The fucking Stro poll has it as a fucking given.Would it be too much to ask them to simply talk about the GAME? Dead air is not a disaster but all this nonsense is.
Nellie Cruz out with a back issue. How do you spell Schadenfreude?
There’s no fucking way White makes that play.tru dat. He finds a way to hit, but he is playing his natural position tonight.
39th-rounder (2017) INF Colton Shaver moves up from QC where he was batting .223/.307/.422 with 15 homers. And kicks things off with a 2-for-3 night including s 2-run bomb. Welcome to Carolina!
Also ... No emojis!
Sip and Pressly gave up the tying run. McHugh’s first run scored at the same time as the other 2, on Cano’s 3 run HRNot quite. I turned it off before Cano finished his trot.
That may be. But Correa is still not hitting, be it because of back problems, knee problems, or because Jobu is on vacation. Results matter.I agree about Correa ... I just do not think that will happen to Altuve. But juneberno.
Recap for those smart enough to go to bed:I went to bed after the first McHugh run.
...KempSipp was ahead 0-2 to the leadoff hitter in the 6th with a 4-3 lead and ends up giving up a double that eventually ties the game
...
NB A. J. ReedI think he got some votes for "best buffet table manner".
in 9 games since being activated, Correa is hitting .094. His OPS is .319. I sure hope it doesn't take Altuve until September to his kid's weight.I know you know this, but back problems are much more likely to linger in a way that affects the ability to swing a bat than is "knee discomfort". I expect Altuve to jump right back into things.
White fouled a mediocre curve off in his next to last pitch. He didn’t just foul it off - He drove it practically through the upper deck facing in foul territory in left.
Must have been looking for something else because that one was plump.
He is better. He covers more ground and takes better routes, but they will run on him more than on Tucker.
Those players first had to perform. And they did. I believe part of the drafting philosophy had to do with the reduction of the two rookie ball teams. The GCL team was going to be loaded with young international players. There wasn't a need or place for many high school draftees.This. And further, I wonder whether the elimination of Greeneville was the driver for the change, or whether it was the result of all the work they are doing internationally. There may have been a deliberate decision to reduce the emphasis on lower round, "high ceiling" (?!) high-schoolers, allow a lot of these talented latin players to compete in the GCL, and draft more older players who start at Tri-City.
If it's anything like Thailand, they'll be forcing fucking mangoes down your throat like their livelihoods depended on it. I reckon I like mangoes as much as the next guy, but damn, not at every fucking meal.I'll take it. Along with pretty much everything else in Thailand (except the pollution).
Framber Valdez gets the promotion from the Hooks. And scheduled for his first AAA start tonight.
Who's the next outfielder in line? Straw? Not sure what to read into this, but JD Davis is the regular in RF at Fresno recently.
Nominated...if there were such a thing.+1
Not particularly informative but a QC Times profile of recent draftee Marty Costes:“He has shown an ability to make the most of his at-bats,’’ Storey said. “He gets on base, one way or another, and that’s a good trait for a young player to have.’’
https://qctimes.com/sports/baseball/professional/minor/midwest-league/costes-finds-his-focus-connects-for-bandits/article_5c1cc5bb-ab7e-54da-9a84-c7e5bbfe3c53.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=user-share
The latter.Yes. But it is close.
Sounds like another “up or out” move to me.Yes. I am pleasantly surprised.
A shiny .351/.385/.730 slash line in his 1st 10 games for the Hooks w/3 doubles, 1 triple and 3 homers. A not so shiny 33% K rate.
Perhaps they should have a seminar on all the different ways that a runner can score from third with less than two outs. There seems to be a great deal of confusion. Is this a trick question? It has to be a home run, right?
I'm getting pretty tired of Nelson Cruz.Did he show up in the Carolina League?
Jake left groin discomfort. Jean Segura left hand discomfort. Ouch!Doug Eddings - vision discomfort
Definitely strike 3 to Haniger and cost Cole a double, and possibly the game.Let’s not give up yet.
WAIT FOR PITCHES TO HIT! JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!Don’t hold back. Go ahead and tell us how you feel about it.
What the fuck? Jake doubles then comes out injured.I thought it would be a triple til he pulled up lame v
I have been really disappointed in Davis. I really think he has the tools and ability to hit at this level, but he just hasn't. I hope it's not attitude or coachability (see Wallace, Brett).Agree with all that. White has struggled some but is getting by on a lot less natural talent.
He's already been through it once and not picked. I will argue that because his bat isn't that great there may be a number of guys at the AAA level like him. If that's the case it reduces the likelihood of him being picked. Being 28 at that time won't help him either. You are probably right. He seems to have found his Rhythm this year, though, and he was doing well last year before missing time with injuries. He might be another David Matranga, though.
5 scoreless frames for Kent Emanuel in his spot start tonight. FWIW, this year:Yeah. That attempt to turn him into a Loogy as a fast track to the show did not work out as expected.
As a starter: 33.1 IP / 24 H / 6 BB / 31 K / .198 BAA / 0.90 WHIP
As a reliever: 34.0 IP / 57 H / 11 BB / 37 K / .370 BAA / 2.00 WHIP
Given that these guys would have to stick on a 25-man roster I would flip Riley Ferrell and Randy Cesar.Agreed. Cesar’s defense is suspect-to-poor, too.
Otherwise Luhnow's got his work cut out for him.
All the other stuff aside, I'm rooting for Rondon to retain the closers' role throughout October. And by “retain” I expect you mean “continue to excel”. That would be fine with me, too.
Just saw the first two innings, but have it recorded. Not sure what I was expecting out of Martin, but it was certainly more than what I saw.Definitely an off-day for him.
Is it based on last year’s record or the current standings this season? I was thinking current standings this season but could be wrong. That has always been my (possibly erroneous) understanding.

Franklin's on the shelf again and will miss the rest of the year, IIRC.Yes. And that could (obviously) change things, but “IIRC”, this is not usually debilitating.
Pretty lukewarm, imo.I am not sure that concealment was his biggest challenge.
I really did like Perez though. He didn't go as deep as I would have liked but he seemed to pitch a good game.I think we will miss Franklin more than Hector, but of the recent departures he may edge out Jorge Alcala in significance.
I think Bob's comment was of the sarcastic variety as regards Longenhagen and McDaniel ranking Beer rather low at #15 and listing his position as DH.Yes and enough people picked up on that positional assessment to worry me a bit. I have seen A.J. Reed play, and one of him is enough in any organization. He reminds me of a larger version of Duck Stuart (whom I have also seen live).
Where have you been? Keuchel's last six starts: 39.2IP, 33H/9ER, 25K:9BBRight. 4-1, 1.65 ERA in July with a 1.010 WHIP.
This tells me that Springer won't go on the DL. If Springer were going on the DL, why send Tucker down?Because Marisnick can play CF better? Plus, they can bring him right back (even without an airplane ticket) if they do put George on the shelf.
For the season (across a couple of stints at AAA), he's hit .323/.384/.615 -- 65 AB, 6 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR.He [Marisnick] had 50 PA's in his recent July stint and slashed .341/.400/.591 with 1 HR, 4 RBI and 3/4 SB. He also had 2 HBP , 12 Ks and 11 error-free OF games (5 CF, 6 RF).
I’m a bit perplexed by the pronunciation of “Schoop.” It’s really “scope?”Yes. Dutch.

Actually he will. Reported as such when the Astros sent him down.Right.
The next shoe dropped:So back to a 5-man rotation? At least for a while??
Paul Braverman @PaulBraverman 23m ago
RHP Brock Dykxhoorn has been transferred to Double-A @cchooks from @FresnoGrizzlies. Next time through Fresno rotation is Sneed, Armenteros, Rodgers, Thornton, James.
Harris and Devo, not sure about any others.I think Harris is past the 5 year mark, isn’t he?
Ronnie Dawson up from.BC.Sounds like another “up or out” move to me.

For a 33rd round Sr sign in 2012, his career has exceeded all expectations. Best of luck to him moving forward.+1
Umm, yeah. The Astros released him today.Actually a player-friendly move by the organization. Hauschild was going nowhere ever with Houston, but is probably worth a look as an inning-eating swing man for a second-division club at the MLB level. I will be surprised if he stays unsigned for long, and not surprised at all to see him back in MLB before the end of the season. I don't see him with a long career, though.
Best of luck to him. At least he was able to get some big league time in with the Rangers back in 2017.
August 2017Or August 1914? (Август 14-ого)
This is the most pathetic display I've seen in many, many years.Or at least since last week.
If a move for a bat is made he’ll be an outfielder. Therefore it’ll be Tucker. When Correa returns Davis goes.This.
I would really like the bus riders to weigh in with their opinion about this trade.Late on the draw, but I’ll weigh in anyway. Alcala is really talented, and I have not seen him pitch, but I got the feeling that he was not as dominant this year as expected. 2021 ML debut seems right, but not guaranteed. Celestine is fast and a good defender but as mentioned earlier, a very long way from ML ready. Alcala seems more replaceable with current talent in the system, but plenty of time to draft/develop additional OF help.
We just acquired Ryan Pressly from the Twins.For. ??

Cali boy Patrick Sandoval just keeps eating. So recapping/updating:And now back to California for a catcher.
- 91 whiffs vs just 13 walks in 81 combined IP this year between QC and BC.
- Now 32 innings since last allowing a run.
- And 41 IP since allowing an earned run.
Oh, ok. Sorry. Not an overpay. Smart scouting by the Angels. He's got a chance in a few years if he keeps developing, and he's from Cali.... might even have a ranch there.
“Grew up” & “Vegas”This juxtaposition May be a linguistic first.
Would have been a helluva DP, but he airmailed it.Looked to me like he hurt his hip/abs - probably some pain on that throw that caused him to flinch.

Wow. They fucked up the replay on the stolen base by Tucker. Call should have been confirmed, let alone upheld. But overturned? Are they smoking crack in NY?My thoughts as well. I had relaxed.
James looks to be a STUD! I would rate him directly below Whitley at the moment and would not give him up for a rental. Striking out 10+ per game is amazing - although his best spot may end up being in the bullpenGenerating eye-popping stats and really looking like a stud are not the same. Even at AAA. He has improved this year )per scouting reports) but let’s not get carried away just yet.
OF assists do not prove anyone is a good fielder. In fact I’m pretty sure Castellanos is considered to be one of the worst defensive OFs in MLB.Right. They prove that everyone runs on them all the time and the fielder periodically gets a lucky throw on target.
Wow, sort of surprised. Kept hearing all the gold glove talk, but didn't realize the bat was that bad, even by Rangers standards.Same bat he has always had. Same glove, too, and nowhere close to “gold”.
I still think Davis can hit, and he can play 1B fine. He’s not good at 3B, however. That was obvious last season. But he may have a future as a pitcher. That WHIP of 1.000 looks pretty good if he can just cut back on the HR allowed.
LaRue thinks you should hold your opinion for a while. 5.2IP, 1 ER, 8K tonight.I will go ahead and take credit for his motivation.
They didn't play that night. White was sent down at the break. And JD is active for tonight’s game in Anaheim.
Seeing the thing on Perez and Tommy John surgery reminded me of something. Apologies if this has been linked to before, but some diligent soul has been keeping a record of ALL such procedures here:Nice sleuthing.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gQujXQQGOVNaiuwSN680Hq-FDVsCwvN-3AazykOBON0/edit#gid=0
If you're too lazy to click thru, current Astros' minor leaguers with their surgery dates:
Kent Emanuel: 6/3/15 (missed most of 2015 and some of 2016 season)
Devin Conn: 1/1/16 (while in college)
Kyle Serrano: 3/1/16 (while in college)
Chad Donato: 7/1/16 (missed 2016 after being drafted)
Jose Hernandez: 1/1/17 (currently pitching for BC after rehabbing earlier at TRC)
Brady Rodgers: 5/2/17 (back with Grizz after rehabbing at lower levels)
Joe Perez: 6/3/17 (possible setback in recovery or new injury?)
Edgardo Sandoval: 6/21/17 (rehabbing at TRC)
Jandel Gustave: 6/21/17 (still out)
I don't think that list is complete. For certain, Nick Hernandez (former Coog and 8th rounder in 2016) should be on there based on this:
And then this from his own twitter account:
So that would put his TJS having occurred on 3/27/18.
Yes. Framber Valdez is the #15 ranked player in our system. He’s a southpaw which may intrigue the O’s since they would be trading a lefty in Britton to us. Valdez has both started and relieved in the minors this year so he’s flexible for the O’s.He also shows currently as "suspended" on the Hooks' roster and some in the bus rider section are concerned about the implications.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Active for today's game.Yep. And two hits allowed in his 1 IP last night in a non-save situation.
Astros close out with 4 games against the Orioles. Feels like the Orioles are hardly going to be fielding a major league team by that point. And the 3 games before are against the Blue Jays.One.
Yankees end the season with 4 against Tampa and 3 against Boston.
Boston ends the season with the Orioles and Yankees.
If home field advantage comes down to the final weeks, I like the Astros chances.
Aha, thank you. Was his short suspension in early June related to his PED suspension? He came back and pitched a few games before the 80-game hammer dropped. He was suspended, then returned briefly, then suspended again without explanation for a few more days before the hammer fell.
Milb transactions page says Framber Valdez has been suspended. Since we haven't seen a press release (yet anyway), I'm guessing it's of the "violation of team rules" variety and not the PED version.I hope you are right, but Quiana followed the same pattern. Suspended for almost two weeks before an announcement was made.
Tucker has been fairly underwhelming so far. That was exactly my observation seeing him in RR, but with all the scouting rave reviews, I figured that what was “obvious” to me was probably “obviously wrong”.
ETA: I realize that he's traditionally had a slow start to every new level, so it will be interesting to see how he does over time. But his swing seems a bit long, and his wrists seem stiff, like he drags the bat through the zone instead of releasing it.
Check’s in the mail.Must have bounced.
Hinch seems to pity the young man-thinks he needs to get straightened out physically and mentally. VERY mature response. If Giles were smart he would take this experience and try to turn himself around.Any word on when Giles will report to Fresno?
Let’s not worry about postseason matchups just yet.Words to live by.
I thought Carmen Bendetti was a character from The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training.I think you are thinking of Carmen Sandiego.

Routine fly to center. No one there. Not watching ... who was supposed to be there?
I don’t think you or Jim are wrong, I was simplyFIFYthinking outloud. Also, I would love to see the Astros go get Realmuto or Ramos and let AJ deal with the clubhouse dynamics.
The Euros in two years will be interesting. A more mature England and France, while Spain, Germany and Portugal will be rebuilding. Plus, Italy and Holland may be rising from their current ashes.Agree. Would like to arrange a visit then.
Should be fun.
Putting him in with a 4-run lead is not setting him up for failure. It may not be the best use of him in the pen or situationally, but that's not his concern. His job is to get outs. He has to get them whether he's starting a game, closing it out, or mopping it up.Exactly.
Good point. I'm still a believer in Davis. Don't know if they will make room for him but he will have a solid ML career I believe.I agree on Davis. Not too sure about Reed -- especially after I saw him in person in RR last month.
... Talked about Reed, Davis being blocked despite being ML-ready (Reed is ML ready?) and gave me the impression they may need to move on this off-season.He is "ML ready" if you are selling.
Hope he still gets acknowledged but I'd be shocked if he pitches given what happened yesterday.I went back and included the sarcasm-alert since your meter is apparently broken.
Nice reward for the great season he is having.[/sarcasm]
No, he averages around 96 on his fastball, and has two good breaking pitches (slider and changeup). He’s a converted starter that the Reds signed out of Cuba. Last year, the Reds often let him get multi-inning saves because of his starting pitching background. This sounds like it may be a “fit”. It seems that the brain trust is quietly putting together a staff where there is ample opportunity for 2-3 inning, mid-game “stars”. McHugh, Peacock, Devenski. Even the usage on the farm (6-man rotation at AAA and tandem below) along with the 13-man Staff fit. Perhaps they are combining the advantages of a second “first time through the order” with a fresher staff front to back in September and beyond?
Whitley has been selected for the game, scheduled for July 15.Nice reward for the great season he is having.
There used to be a pbp guy on the farm everyone was very excited about, but maybe he was in Lancaster and stayed there.Mike Capps. RR.
Gee whiz, it’ll be nice when Correa and Altuve get back.
Springer didn't look quite so lost tonight. Maybe he's breaking out of the slump. Bad luck with the two DP's, though. Odor taps one off the end of the bat and gets an RBI, Bregman beats the shit out of two balls and produces four outs.I think the first DP was Altuve.
Osvaldo Duarte:
Apr .212/.253/.341
May .298/.331/.421
Jun .289/.362/.494
And 7-12 to start off July.
Currently on a 9-game hitting streak in which he's batting .472.
Only if they're the European variety, I don't think the African ones can get here that fast.Ba da bum
I’ve been thinking about his name. Would it mean True Lander or Green Lander?Land owner.
Am I right that if Gattis is DHing that he can't replace Federowicz if he gets injured. If that is the case, can the Astros go with having Stassi "day to day" or do they need to 10-day DL him and bring up Stubbs? Because I don't think the Astros want to start Gattis at catcher, but they can't DH him if he is the backup catcher.Gattis can take the field but they then lose the DH. Pitcher would bat in F-wicz spot.
Is there anyone else on the active roster right now who can catch?
Altuve hasn’t swung at a strike in a week.Only about 4 inches between a double and a double play on that one, though.
Ancestors with the name traced to the Netherlands and NW Germany. Hard to tell where the name originated.Probably Ost-Friesen then.
That was the single worst swing I've seen Altuve take, and that's saying something.
My last name is German-Dutch. It serves as an outstanding early warning system for people I don't want to talk to. Although it's particularly jarring when somebody I don't recognize pronounces it correctly, as happens when return to visit extended family.German-Dutch? ??
X-rays negative--Stassi day to day.Good news.
I hate the Dutch.Dutch is OK unless you have to pronounce it.
Good grief. Does he need to get his WHIP under 0.30 to get promoted to the GCL?That is a huge percentage of base runners he has allowed to score. Needs more work.
Germany out. Argentina out. Portugal out. Now Spain out.Amazing!
Wow!
The streak is over. 0-4 tonight. He did well to keep it going so long. Congratulations!
Yeah, there is no way you would put Kemp at SS unless everybody else had broken both legs. Whereas you can put Marwin at short and not really worry about it.Except for tonight.
I would think James, Armenteros, and Thornton are the priorities of the Fresno 6, but I dunno. One or two of those may even get added and brought up in September. Ditto Whitley.Hauschild was already lost once, and I don't expect them to protect him this year either. Dykxhoorn is interesting, but very unlikely (imo) to stick with anyone or even be selected. I do think your three are the top candidates, though I would place Armenteros ahead of the other two after seeing them in RR recently. Don't confuse me with someone who knows how to scout pitchers, though.
3B would be more than a stretch and RF would allow first-to-third on every hit. LF & 2B is fine. Range in CF helps mitigate his noodle arm (and there have been a lot of noodle-armed CF-ers who had solid MLB careers). He can really only play those three positions, though. I am glad he is on the team and doing well, but he does not have anything close to Marwin's versatility (or power).
I will add this about Kemp, ... he certainly isn’t a fit at first base, and third base could be a stretch, but Kemp could play every other position on the field.
Ok, someone needs to step up with a big hitDid United Airlines lose their bat bags?
Iran can qualify from Group B with a tie with Portugal, if Spain loses to Morocco. Unlikely, but still a permutation. To complicate it further, the Iran tie scenario also requires Spain to lose by 2 goals or, if it's only by 1, Iran has to score 3 goals more than Spain today. So, yeah, Iran has to beat Portugal.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Iran is still in the mix in Group B, no? Neither Spain or Portugal have secured an advance yet. One of them has to, but neither are guaranteed. That is the way I read it. Iran would have to beat Portugal, though. Any other result leaves them out.
Patrick Sandoval over his last 5 appearances--27 Ks vs just 3 BBs in 25 IP with no ERs. 20 hits allowed. Was going to suggest the same. Making room for Donato?
101 pitches thrown tonight was his career high.
21-year old lefty should be BC bound shortly.
Speaking of TJS, Chad Donato went 5 innings tonight giving up just one hit while whiffing 10 and walking 1. Thru his first 2 outings for the V-Cats, 16 Ks vs 2 BBs in 11 IP and zero ERs allowed. At 23, he should be moving up soon.
Donato had his surgery in July 2016 after being drafted the previous month by the Astros in the 11th round. Made his debut last year with 10 appearances split between the Appy and GCL.
I'm wondering how the far-right white-nationalist faction of the Polish fandom is wearing the loss. That is a foul and deserves at least a yellow card.
Referee waived him on. He owns the cluster.Exactly.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A harmonic convergence of questionable officiating and serendipitous timing for Senegal. The refs allowed a Senegal substitution just as the Poland team was kicking the ball back to their goalie, presumably to restart their attack. The Senegalese player ran on to the field just in time to intercept the ball, side step the onrushing goalie and kick the ball in to the goal for an easy open netter. That sucks.
My original statement may have sounded too critical. I didn’t mean it that way. Few players are plus in everything they do. If Kemp continues to hit like this I can live with his arm in the outfield. It isn’t terrible. It just isn’t ideal.Agree completely.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If you want to look at it that way, I guess you are right. No one is perfect. Unless it is Pujols running, not many LFers are going to throw out a runner from third on a deep fly. So if were talking about a fly ball to LF that is a bit deeper than a fly ball to shallow LF, with less than 2 outs and a man on third that is not Pujols, and Reddick or Marwin aren't playing but Kemp is, than yes, you are correct, his arm becomes a liability. The original statement was that Kemp's arm was a liability in the OF. And I agree with that. I also agree that the liability is limited when he plays in LF, but he has been playing quite a bit in CF, also, where the liability is more significant. I like what he does at the plate, and with all the other bats in the lineup we do not need the kind of power production from LF that is more "normal" for that position, so on balance, he is an asset for the team. But we can say all that without pretending that his arm is adequate.
Only if he needs to throw direct to home on a sac fly. Otherwise it's strong enough to hit the cut-off man.So it’s only a liability when he needs it? My arm is strong enough to hit the cut-off man.
No, his arm is not a liability.Yes, coach, it is.
... Ordem is not necessarily the first thing that springs to mind when I think of Brazil. But "progresso" is??
I hear The Peabody is a good hotel.Yes. YES!
I'm making paella and sangria in honor of the old country.Poland?
Trent Thornton and his 0.96 WHIP leads the PCL.He improved on that tonight. Straw also looked good, as did Mayfield & Davis. AJ Reed is slow and did not show much range at 1B.
