Talk Zone / Re: Milo Hamilton has passed
« on: September 18, 2015, 02:48:05 am »
Former Astros fan from VA, as I posted earlier today on FB:

Sad to hear of the passing of former Astros radio announcer Milo Hamilton. It made me think - in my lifetime, I believe I've spent more hours listening to his voice than any other in sports. From stumbling upon a random Beaumont TX station in the early days of online broadcasts in 1996 (remember RealPlayer?) until upgrading to MLB Extra Innings to watch Astros games in 2004, I listened to him and Alan Ashby call probably 1,000+ games. The sound of him screaming "HOLY TOLEDO, WHAAAAAaaaaAAAAAAaaaaaTTTTTT A PLAY!!!" is tattooed in my brain. Glad to have met him a few times and found him as genuine in person as he seemed on the air.

I don't understand why Holliday was playing so deep vs. Loney:

It looks like he was playing a couple steps off the warning track.  All of Loney's HRs this season were right of CF, so it's not like he's a big opposite-field power threat.  What am I missing?

I suspect the NFL will be the most "recession proof", because a lot of its audience is based on gambling, and gambling (and drinking) typically increase during downturns in the economy.

OK, but how do gambling dollars go back to the league?

I have my 2 season tickets for sale to the Saturday 7/12 Astros-Nationals game.  (Can't go - softball game.)  Seats are in Section 314, Row A, on the aisle - front row in the upper deck.  $40 for the pair, which is less than what you'd pay at the box office.  If interested, PM me.  Thanks.

It's not as much of a "Yankees" thing, as much as the whole grieving process has gotten so overblown post-9/11.  Not to sound insensitive, but we're what, a year removed from the VT tragedy?  It's not exactly on anyone's radar anymore... why feel the need to call attention to it?  When I told my roommate that the Yankees were playing at VT, he honestly FORGOT about the whole connection to the shootings, and thought the Yankees had some other connection to VT that he was missing.

Here's a nominee for most ridiculous story of the MLB off-season:

"Umpires are livid that Major League Baseball has sent investigators to their hometowns, asking neighbors a series of questions that include whether the ump belongs to the Ku Klux Klan."
"Tom Christopher, the Milwaukee-based supervisor of security and investigations in the commissioner's office, had asked questions about Klan membership to neighbors of umpires Greg Gibson and Sam Holbrook, who reside in Kentucky. In addition, Hirschbeck said similar questions had been asked to neighbors of umpire Ron Kulpa, who lives in the St. Louis area."
"Once again, baseball's favorite way of doing things: Ready, fire, aim," Hirschbeck said. "It's not a good way to start the season."

Talk Zone / Pettitte could corroborate HGH accusation against Clemens
« on: January 30, 2008, 08:49:13 am »
"Based on what we know, there was a situation where Andy was speaking to Roger in Brian's presence, then Andy came over to Brian and essentially said, 'Why didn't you tell me about this stuff?' He referred to HGH," Ward said. "Brian discouraged him and then several months later, when he (Pettitte) got injured, he came back and asked Brian about it, and that's when Brian injected him. We believe that based on the fact that Andy came to Brian and asked him about HGH, it was Roger who told Andy about HGH and that's why he asked Brian about it."

Richard Emery, another lawyer for McNamee, said his client and Pettitte also discussed steroids use by Clemens.

"Pettitte is certainly going to tell the truth, and if he tells the truth, everything will be fine," Emery said

Dave Nilsson

Jeff Cirillo
Jose Valentin

Bryce Florie

Mike Misuraca

That was ANNOUNCED during the game? Good grief.

Yup... in the middle of the game, Buck says "Let's go down to the field, where Ken Rosenthal has some BIG news."  Silly of me to think that the news would have something to do with the GAME THEY WERE BROADCASTING, like a sudden injury.

ARod couldn't make it to the game to pick up his Hank Aaron award, but Boras still tried to make ARod bigger than the World Series anyway.  What a classless prick.

At one point, I remember hearing that teams were "discouraged" from making big announcements (e.g. managerial changes) until the WS was over.  Apparently no one is concerned about MLB sanctioning those who do.

How about his brilliant observation that innings that start off with a home run generate more multi-run innings than innings that start off with a walk?  Amazing insight.

Last night was the 2nd time I had heard that line this postseason... don't remember if the first time was out of his mouth or someone else's.

IIRC, the line was: "Conventional wisdom indicates that a leadoff walk would lead to more multi-run innings than a leadoff homerun, but we did the research, and this season, that was not the case."

Both times, it sounded like he/they were trying to say that you'd rather have a leadoff walk than a leadoff homerun, which of course is absurd.

I can only assume that he's trying to compare the total number of multi-run innings started by walks vs. the total number of multi-run innings started by homeruns (not the percentage of the time that either leads to a multi-run inning), and since one would think leadoff walks are far more common than leadoff homeruns, you'd also think there are more multi-run innings started by walks than by homeruns.  Regardless, both times they did an awful job conveying this stat.

My interest in baseball has been renewed, thanks to People's "Sexiest Fan Alive" contest.  And here I thought "sexy" was defined by a ground ball to 2st that advances the runner to 3th.  ANYWAY, Assuming Scarlett Johansson is a fan of SOMETHING, I thought this contest was already over, yet TBS continues to push it.

I present,

Candie makes several curious points.  As a Killer B fan, she supports injury-ridden Backe, but not Borkowski.  She wants to change the "walk rule" (a hotly contested rule during the Owners Meetings, for sure).  Her favorite cheer is "Full count, lights out!  Houston Astros withoutta doubt!!!," which seems highly impractical, if not solely for the fact that MMPUS fireworks are not ready to launch at lights out on every full count.

Given that no one here (that I know of) can compare with the globes under Candie's bumblebee costume, I propose this site starts an OWAiest Fan Alive contest.

The green pickup was driven by Devil Rays batboy Matthew Felix Carlson, and both men were stopped at a traffic light, said St. Petersburg Police Department spokesman George Kajtsa.

According to a St. Petersburg Police Department affidavit, Hickey pulled over for Police Officer Steven W. Sprout at Gandy Boulevard but then tried to put the car in gear and drive away. None that didnt have a corresponding winning streak.

You wouldn't think so.

2006 Turds went 1-10 from 6/20-7/1 and had that 7-game losing streak including the 4 at MMP in September.  Their longest win streak was 7.

A 10 game losing streak, just one, will typically sink a team.

It would be interesting to know how many teams with 10-game losses made the playoffs, if any won the WS, what the longest losing streak by an eventual WS winner was, etc.

And if ARod had hit a HR when the game resumed, it wouldn't have counted as his 500th but rather his 493rd, meaning his 499th would have become his 500th.

I always write "T" on the basepath that the batter/runner advanced, but then again I adhere to the guideline Pravata mentioned of being able to reconstruct it in my own mind, as opposed to being "official."  I never use "FC" for anything but the first action of an at-bat, so I would never indicate a hit followed by a FC.

Also, there are times when an FC is appropriate even if no out is recorded, e.g. routine grounder, fielder tries to make a play on the lead runner but is not in time, everyone is safe.

In last night's game, on Everett's RBI ground-out to 3B in the 2nd, the Reds announcers were saying that Encarnacion made a mental error by not looking back Pence at 3rd.  This was a slowly-hit ball that Encarnacion had to charge and make a quick play on the run to just barely nip Everett at 1st.

The way I saw it, it didn't seem like there would have been any time to look Pence back to 3rd and still get the out at 1st, so I don't understand what the Reds announcers were talking about.  Am I missing something?

I believe that the Oakland A's are the only organization that does not allow liquor to be served in the clubhouse, either home or away clubs.

From the AP...

"The Astros do not provide alcohol to players in their clubhouse. Manager Phil Garner recalled the Brewers, where he began his managerial career in 1992, banning alcohol that season."

Of course there's a difference between allowing liquor and providing it, and between their clubhouse and their clubhouse on the road... but still, I was surprised to read this.  Furthermore...

"The drinking as a whole has dropped off significantly in the clubhouse, and from what I see, just generally, in baseball as a whole," Garner said. "I think there was a drinking culture in baseball years ago, and I don't think it's there anymore."

My crackberry works fine for on-the-go posting, if I would ever want to do that.

I can read messages on my BlackBerry 7190, but the links to post new topics or replies do not show up, FWIW.  I must say the idea of posting in the GZ while attending a game intrigued me.

Weather is unpredictable, climate is not.  The chart I linked to shows that the minimum temperature in early April is likely to be just north of 28 degrees in Cleveland.  Every year.

The chart shows that the average min in March is 28.  The average min on 4/9 is 38.

Anyway, what is your solution?  No home games for Cleveland until 5/1 when the average min is 46?

They have made a team like pittsburgh start on the road for years now?  Why?  Do to the weather.    You get the same number of home/road games, so why does it matter when they come?   And to those northern teams who have issues, try building a retractable roof on your stadium so you would not have these dilemmas.   But also I don't see them whining that hard if they get a west coast trip out of the way earlier than other teams.

Give me a fucking break.  Unless you're suggesting the northern teams start with like a month's worth of road games, this is a difference of what, 7 calendar days?  I doubt the likelihood of snow on 4/9 is dramatically different than it is on 4/2 in any of these cities.  MLB ran into bad luck this year with the snow.  MLB does a lot of things wrong, but I don't think this is one of them.  Fans in northern cities deserve the chance to see a real Opening Day every once in a while.

Of course Garner has been double switching 9 and 1 for years though.  You gain 1 spot in the order and gain a defensive advantage.

Including Monday, when Lidge came in.

The announcers said it was a botched hit and run, but the replay showed that AE did not turn his head while running to 2nd, obviously that being the usual indicator of a hit-and-run.

The replay I saw showed him turning his head.

Just came across this article, no word on if the Extra Innings deal has gone through or not, but a couple other interesting notes:

"Meanwhile, a dispute between Fox Sports Net and DirecTV and EchoStar could lead to FSN Midwest's Cardinals telecasts being blacked out this season in parts of Illinois, Iowa and Kentucky. FSN wants to be in the DBS providers' basic service package."

"FSN Houston will air 50 Astros games in HD this season, starting next month."

I assume you mean Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday?

That's it, call off the season.

(Really though, can someone PM me if you get an extra magnet schedule or 2?)

Two features of the old board that seem to be missing here:
1. The "location" line under each user's name/avatar
2. When you click on a thread and then click "back" in your browser to return to the forum, the "new" message indicator still shows up for that thread.  I'm pretty sure on the old site that would disappear after clicking the "back" button.

David, are talking about JMs in Harrisonburg?  Did you go to JMU?  I was at Madison from '92-'96 and we lugged many of kegs up the hill on Port Rd to Ashby Crossing.  I think the Beast was 30 bucks for a keg or 5 bucks for 24 cans.  Amazing I ever graduated, but learned much more off campus drinking the cheap stuff.

Indeed I did go to JMU, class of 2001.  The promo in question was from Dave's Taverna though, not JM's.  JM's closed around the time I got there, and is a BW3s now.

For me it's Natty Light.  Always has been.  One of my most cherished college souvenirs is the promo from our favorite bar advertising "$2.50 Natural Light Pitcher Thursdays!"  Which translates, because rent in Harrisonburg was $250/mo, and now in DC you're lucky to find a pitcher under $9.00 and rent under $900.

The way to get around this is to have the entire team wear the pin.

Or better yet, have the entire team wear CAPS with just that Sunshine Kids logo for a day, like they did last year with the Space Shuttle CAPS.

The blue breast cancer awareness bands are required? Source?

They blue prostate cancer wristbands may not be required, but they are worn during a league-sponsored event.

Talk Zone / Re: Comish office asks Big to remove star...
« on: March 23, 2007, 12:38:17 pm »

Why not?

Because team uniforms shouldn't be used as billboards.  It's one small reason why sports are better in the US than other countries.

Talk Zone / Re: Comish office asks Big to remove star...
« on: March 23, 2007, 12:28:15 pm »

You don't have a problem with MLB stopping Craig Biggio wearing a pin in spring training that advertises a charity for kids with cancer?  Just so they can keep the uniforms uniform?

Can it be perceived as petty and slimy?  Of course.  But I see where MLB is coming from, they don't want everyone in the league wearing a different pin for whatever reason on their hat.

The camouflage jerseys and blue wrist bands are different because they ARE uniform and are worn by entire teams.

To answer your question, if I thought that removing the pin would result in one more kid getting cancer, of course I would be against it.  But I hardly think that's the case.

Talk Zone / Re: Comish office asks Big to remove star...
« on: March 23, 2007, 12:16:56 pm »
They want to keep the uniforms uniform.  I don't have a problem with that.

That said, I think the perfect response from Biggio would be to carry around a Sunshine Kids sticker in his back pocket all year and slap it on his helmet right after he hits 3,000 when all the cameras are snapping.

Talk Zone / Re: Comish office asks Big to remove star...
« on: March 23, 2007, 12:01:56 pm »

So this is the type of player speech that MLB needs to supress?

I think the point is that they want to supress ALL individual decorations so that they don't have to review them on a case by case basis.  For all we know, MLB could have told another player not to wear a pin, and he could have said "well why can't I wear mine if Biggio is wearing one?"

Why?  Because this is MLB we're talking about.  They've gone this far to claim that the monopoly is no big deal and that fans can sign up for DirecTV or MLB.TV.  DirecTV was obviously aiming for exclusivity, just like they have with NFL Sunday Ticket.  I can't imagine DirecTV would have paid what they did if they weren't assured off the record by MLB that they would be the only ones to have Extra Innings.

I'm sure they only offered the matching clause because they assumed it wouldn't be exercised, and that way they could make inDemand out to be the bad guys.  Now that it appears inDemand has offered to match, MLB will have to find a way to turn it down.

the main problem with wikipedia, is that people ascribe to it an ambition and quality that it never had to begin with.  it never sought out to be the one and only repository of all knowledge.

those who praise it as such are delusional, those who deride for attempting the impossible are misguided.

What amuses me most about Wikipedia is that when news breaks, there's always someone who updates Wiki in a matter of minutes... as if the authors think they earn a badge of honor for being the first to update a page.

When I received the breaking news alert from that Robert Gates was nominated for Secretary of Defense, I went on Wiki to check out his background.  Someone had ALREADY updated his page to say that he was serving in that position (keep in mind he was only NOMINATED at that point.)

Lots of other pages are obviously plagiarized from other web sites.  I often look up bands to read about their backgrounds, and in many cases their biographies have just been cut and pasted from their own sites.

Obviously content on Wikipedia should be taken with more grains of salt than the average source, but if you're intent on researching via the Web and just want information fast without pop-ups or ads, it's useful.

The most useful feature I have seen in Firefox is the "minimum font size" option, which you can bump up if you are running a high resolution and don't want to squint all the time.

I personally don't find the "tabs" feature useful at all.  I've been able to easily switch back and forth between browser windows since Windows 95 came out.  IE7 has a tabs feature too, not that I use it.

As far as Firefox being "safer," one reason it is considered safer is just because it is a much smaller target for hackers, seeing how 90% of the population (including just about all of the clueless people on the Internet who will click on anything) uses IE.

Firefox is open source though, so you have the option to create and install all sorts of addons that IE will never have.

IIRC Tim McClelland is routinely rated the best ump by the players, so it's hard to have a beef with him.  He appeared to look at the ball for shoe polish after Scott was hit by it; I guess he didn't see any.

As for Fieldin Culbrith and his technicolor sunglasses, he just plain missed that call at first.

Thankfully neither was the difference in the game.

Funny story related to the shot heard round the world above... my Dad collected autographs as a kid.  One of his signed balls had Branca right above Thomson on it.  He's at a Yankees Old Timers game with it, trying to get Joe Dimaggio's signature.  He hands the ball to Joe, and the ball has so many signatures on it that there isn't really enough room.  Finally he says, "we can't have these two together" and squishes his name between Branca and Thomson.

Pujols came off the bag to try to catch the throw.  He did nothing wrong on the play.  It was just a terrible throw by Wainright.

Pooholes was coming off the bag before Wainright got to the ball.  He started as soon as Lamb's "hit" squibbled, and was almost half-way to the mound when Wainright turned and fired.  Had he been back at the bag, he would've at least saved the ball going down the RF line.

I saw it this way too.  I thought he was holding his arms out as if to say "don't throw it," and once it was thrown, it looked like he actually tried to stop it with his bare hand.

I don't know anywhere that breaks stats down that far, so disregarding the less than 2 outs part of the question:

Runner on 3B,  5th highest AVG in MLB

Runners on 1B & 3B,  6th highest AVG in MLB

Runners on 2B & 3B,  2nd LOWEST AVG in MLB

Bases loaded,  19th in MLB

Of course AVG doesn't factor in Sac Flies... so take whatever you want, or nothing at all (probably the better option), from these stats.

Archive / Re: Willy

nothing wrong with his arm, but he takes poor lines and angles to the ball, he turns the wrong way, he misjudges the flight of the ball and he makes many missteps.

This makes more sense than the "killing the Astros with bad defense" line.

Willy's defense and his "i have it made" attitude had gotten him benched.

So then his defense WASN'T the sole issue.

Yes, I kept score of the whole thing and I never once left my seat.

Is there a curfew rule in MLB?  For some reason I thought you couldn't start a new inning after 1AM, but I don't see anything in the rule book about it.

That was insane.  First time I've had to use the 2nd scoresheet that I bring to every game.

LeCroy said after the game that he understood and agreed with the decision, that if his Dad were the coach he would expect him to make the same decision, and that sometimes you have to take your lumps in this game.

I think that was one of the most interesting games I have ever seen.  Yes it sucks that the Stros lost, but there were SO many plays that if went the other way could have led to an Astros win.  I was at the edge of my seat for the entire 2nd half of the game, which was unexpected after being down 7-1.

Talk Zone / Re: So that balk...
« on: May 25, 2006, 12:20:41 am »
The umps seemed not to notice, or even be interested in calling anything, during the 5 or so seconds before Frank came out of the dugout.  THEN all the umps convene and decide to call it.

Looked like the balk call itself was a balk.  Balk ^ 2.  Just glad it wasn't a walk-off (balk^2), I guess.

How did it look on TV?  What were the announcers saying?  Consensus in our section was that it LOOKED like a balk, but they were going to let it go until Frank came out of the dugout.

What a strange play.

Off the top of my head, I seriously can't remember 3 Preston Wilson hits this year.

Nats fans loved seeing Preston struggle tonight.

He didn't nonchalant that ball.  He over ran it.  Wasn't a deficiency of hustle, deficiency in judgement.

Is it 2005 again?  IIRC a misjudged Taveras fly ball was the main reason for the one loss at RFK last year.

Typical Springer spot.  No lead, not a Qualls or a Wheeler inning.

Exactly.  Qualls and Wheeler seem to come in to preserve leads, not to keep it close in case the offense can get a rally going.

I didn't watch the game, but judging from the box score, how was that not a typical spot for Springer to come in, based on the past?

Talk Zone / Springer in the stands
« on: May 23, 2006, 01:47:22 pm »
Great snippet in NYCU today about Springer sitting in the stands last night.  I sat in that section for the Bruntlett game last year.  Is this "common practice" for an active suspended player to sit in the stands?  I certainly have never heard of that before.  Did any of the Houston cameramen show him during the broadcast last night?  I've seen Drayton, Hunsicker, and Purpura in the stands before... never a player though.  Also, I wonder where Garner was?

The Wayne State college newspaper?  How did you end up THERE?

Interesting how the author proclaims "I can tell you the reason" Clemens didn't come back in the spring, but never actually comes out and says steroids at any point in the article.

Yeah, Craigslist has a ton of ticket postings for Thursday.  I don't know yet if I'll need a pair or just 1.  I bet they don't even draw 15,000 for that game.

MLB Extra Innings ? All four games will be on the Washington Fox affiliate, whatever it's called.

Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN)!!!!  MASN is the most pathetic channel I've ever seen.  During the 21 hours a day that a game is NOT on the air, it's just a plain blue screen with the words "Mid-Atlantic Sports Network Home of the Nationals" scrolling with a HORRIFIC 10-second music clip repeating endlessly.

I wonder if the RFK PA announcer will call Wandy "Wendy" as he did last year.

Also, as JD pointed out during yesterday's game, the Nats have a "Day" and an "O'Connor" going in this series.  No word on the availability of Joe Sandra.

3) you're from Virginia

4) you preface your request with, "if you can just..."

I don't really have a problem with that one, the "touching first" part certainly could not have been scripted.  It reminds me a little of one of my favorite calls, Tom Cheek during the Joe Carter HR: "Touch em all, Joe, you'll never hit a bigger homerun in your life!"

It's not that much about you, Milo, and the call on Aaron's HR wasn't all that impressive.

Is Milo saying that it IS about him?  This just seems like the media latching on to anything they can while Barry is stuck on 713.  Jayson Stark had a similar story on yesterday, and I didn't sense Milo's ego while reading it either.  True, Milo's call of Aaron's 714 wasn't anything terribly special, but I think it got the job done and is certainly one of the most replayed calls in baseball history.  I'd rather have an ordinary call of a historic moment than some prefabricated poetic nonsense.

"[Kellen] Kulbacki currently leads the nation in home runs (22), ranks second in the nation in batting (.485), and is fourth in RBI (68)."

"According to the NCAA Baseball Records Book, the only player since 1965 to lead all of Division I in batting average, home runs and RBI is Mike Smith of Indiana in 1992. (The book records home run and RBI champions since 1965; the batting champions date back to 1957.)"

My "back" button in my browser isn't working.  Not sure what is happening, but the only way I can get back to the index of posts is to click the "index" link.

Just to add on, when an OWA page loads, about 5 transparent pages load on top of it, causing the back button in IE not to work.  It doesn't happen everytime for me, though... I first noticed it last night during the game.  Came and went.  Then noticed it again at work this morning.  Came and went again.
