Does his injury impact when the suspension begins?

They said in the game tonight that he can serve the suspension while on the DL, the difference being that he will not be paid for the time he is suspended.

I think they said he is not eligible for the postseason.

It's classy to celebrate someone else's victory, instead of being bitter that it wasn't your own.

I've received so many congratulations notes from friends who are fans of other teams since the last out was made. I did not expect that at all. I am extremely grateful for that.

I grew up in the Houston area, loving the Astros from as early as I can remember and seeing countless games at the Astrodome. I moved to Singapore in 1993, and have split time between Singapore and Shanghai since 2003. When I am in China, it can be really hard to watch games because the connection is so slow. That's how I found this forum – I could often listen, but not see, so over the past 14 years, the GZ has often been my "eyes" while I listened to the game. I can't tell you how much it's meant. I don't post often, but I watch/listen to every game I can, and read every post in the TZ and GZ.

This year, I watched the postseason games at a sports bar in Shanghai with a friend from Singapore, her husband from Baltimore (a complete baseball nut who would be an excellent fit here), and a friend from England (who only discovered baseball this year because we were talking about it constantly in front of her). I told them about this forum and how knowledgable you all are. They celebrated the World Series win like crazy with me, and have become Astros fans in their own rights after watching the games with me. They asked me to congratulate everyone on the board here, especially those who have been faithful fans for many years. So, in addition to my thanks to all of you for being my eyes, I offer congratulations from some new Astros fans here in Shanghai.

After fighting the parking lot traffic and making it back to my buddy’s place in Malibu to crash for the night, I am finally wound down enough to reflect on what just happened.  I just witnessed the Astros’ first World Series game victory in franchise history live and in person.  I feel amazingly privileged to have been there.

I had a good feeling that the boys would win tonight... I just didn’t expect it to be like THAT.  I got a lot of high fives, fist bumps, and hat tips from Dodger fans on the way out, but boy were they pissed at Roberts.

It was such an outstanding game. Congratulations getting to see that in person.

« on: October 18, 2017, 08:26:14 am »
I heard Hinch say in an interview (I think it was aired pre-game in the Game 3 broadcast) that his plan for the rest of the series was to let the pitcher pitch as long as he was pitching well, and that was his plan for all the pitchers. It didn't seem like that was what happened with McCullers, but I wasn't there to witness first hand either. (In fact, I was only able to listen to the broadcast, so didn't even see it on TV.)

I got to watch Game 1 with some friends in the Camel Sports Bar in Shanghai this morning at 8 am. We had some loaded fries (on the menu as poutine, but really just an odd mix of stuff on top of fries). It wasn't Frito pie, but it seemed to do the trick.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Valbuena is on base every time Bregman comes to bat?

15
Correa walks
Rasmus advances runners on a groundout
Marwin RBI single

Score tied with 1 out in the top of the 5th

16
Castro doubles
Marisnick bunt hit
Altuve RBI single
Springer 2-RBI double

Now Astros 4, Boston 5 with no outs in the top of the 5th

That's what they do in Indonesia.  And then pray for rain.  And when it doesn't rain, it shuts down the entire country, plus a few more, for three months.

I live in one of those "few more" (Singapore). It is brutal when the fires get out of control in Indonesia.
The problem for us isn't a lack of humidity, but the winds.

I always liked VV's arm, but the fact remains that he had trouble putting hitters away when he needed to.  He may turn out to be the next Johnson, Clemens, Tiant, what have you, but the Astros needed a swing and miss closer and acquired one they thought could be it.  It may not work out, not every move does.  But losing good prospects such as VV are part of being a winning team.  You always hate to lose players, but success has a price.

Definitely. I like VV, but I think the front office did what was needed to make the team better this year. Whether the move works out or not is irrelevant, in the sense that it did seem to be the right move at the time it was made.

I think VV might be really good. But I think the Astros might be really good too, and trading him was just part of making the Astros better.

This is the first year my 8-year-old has followed the team passionately. He was crying after the game. I explained to him that the Astros made the playoffs the first time when I was eight years old, losing a five-game series they could've won. Then they didn't do it again until I was 14, then not again until I was 25, and they didn't win a playoff series until I was 32. I told him I don't think he'll have to wait as long to see them in the playoffs again, and that I'll be there watching every game with him. The next question out of his mouth was, "How long is it until Opening Day?"

Good boy!
Did you have the count for him? I haven't marked it off on the calendar yet.

Marwin was signed as a MLFA by the Cubs in 2005, and drafted away by the Red Sox in the 2011 Rule 5 draft. He was then apparently immediately traded to the Astros in exchange for Marco Duarte.

Ah good catch! Thanks.
Did Rule 5 procedures still apply to him that year. I seem to remember him needing to stay on the 25-man roster and maybe being hidden on a lengthy DL stay that year, in order to keep him. I might be wrong though.

No doubt. Haven't seen hide nor hair of him lately, which is sort of weird, but a big fucking congrats to him, all of the front office and Crane.  Must be real sweet for them.

I saw a brief comment from him in the video from the celebrations after the last game of the regular season.
I think I saw something 2-3 weeks ago from him saying he was going to maintain media silence while the season wound down.

Congratulations to them for sure!

Brownie or Ass made a comment earlier that the pitchers weren't throwing many breaking pitches, it was one thing McCullers was doing.  I can see them not throwing anything but a fastball to Conger.  I don't think he can catch anything that isn't in a straight line, and sometimes not even that.

The strike outs are down, which can also make you think they aren't taking aggressive at-bats.

So, not surprising, I rather agree with Sparks.

Thanks for the description. It's different, following without eyes.

39
Sparks says he hopes this makes the team think as they head home, and get mad. He is of the opinion that they have been playing tentative this series.

I've only got radio access. Is that how it has looked for his series?

40
4-2 Rangers now, in the bottom of the 7th.

41
if Assby likes the rangers so much, he should go work for them.

I like Sparks and Ford.

I haven't lost confidence in this team either. I am aware of the BBG's eye though, and I have not yet confessed my wrongs here: I think I might have unintentionally taunted them. In McHugh's game, I had to leave the house shortly after the game started. I said to myself, "I hope it's 4-0 by the end of the inning so I'll have an inkling of how the game will go before I leave the house." Then I groaned and said, "4-0 in the Astros' favour! PLEASE!"

We all know what the score was by the end of that first inning.

Perhaps I am due some punishment?

I'm in Asia so am not sure on the time difference) unveiling the new line of toys. There have been similar Star Wars themed things going on at a variety of big events, like ballgames.

I only listened to the 9th and he said no hitter through 8. Then he would say, 2 outs away, 1 more out to go, 1 strike away from a no hitter.

I listened to the whole thing. He first said "no hitter" at the end of the 7th, I think. Sparks seemed to be at a bit of a loss to know how to reply.

It's Art Howe for some reason. Is he associated with the Astros these days?

He just said in an interview on the televised broadcast that he would tell Springer not to try to carry the team, and to remember that he's just one of nine guys.

They didn't say why Howe is here, only stating that we would now be hearing "from a manager's perspective."

What happened?  Gamecast isn't super helpful.

I am listening on the radio, so didn't see it, but the description was that the ball went between Fister's legs, then bounced off the second base bag and shot up.  It allowed Altuve to reach first safely on an infield hit.

Seems strange to take the defensive hit of Wallace instead of Dominguez at 3B, just to get Corporan's bat in the lineup. Somebody 'splain this to me.

Is it about getting Corporan's bat in the lineup, or getting ABs for Castro when he's not catching?  It could've been Wallace at DH and Dominguez at 3B.

Happ giving us what I expected. They're hitting almost .500 against him!

It makes you wonder how big a hole he wants to dig for the lineup to crawl out of.
I really want the guy to succeed.  It sometimes looks like he defeats himself.

Talk Zone / Re: How did you become an Astros fan?
« on: November 03, 2011, 10:39:03 pm »
I was a born Astros fan, attending games at the 'Dome from my earliest days.

When I moved to Singapore and later China, I brought the Astros with me.  Many of my friends in China and Singapore have a nice wardrobe of Astros gear that they wear proudly, claiming to be Astros fans themselves.  I've followed the team from Asia for the past 20 years.  First, it was newspaper clippings my parents would send (baseball rarely showing up in the news in Singapore and all).  On my first trip home after I'd moved to Singapore, I was in the airport in LA waiting to make the transfer to Houston when they announced the strike.  I was so disappointed.  When I got home, the tickets my dad had bought for a a group of us to go to a game were sitting displayed on the mantle.

Ever since the internet made it possible to keep up with baseball on a daily basis again, I have followed the Astros as ardently as anyone, I think.  The thought of them going to the AL makes me sick.  I don't know what I will do when that happens.

What happened?

Going on what I heard from DoRay, Paredes knocked down a ball off Werth's bat that, if it got through, would score the winning run.  The runner from 2B stopped at 3B, but Paredes threw to 2B to try to get the out, and threw the ball away.  The runner who'd stopped at 3B scored then.

But you still only use the one utensil.  You don't use a pair of chopsticks and a meat cleaver, correct?

Different in different parts of China. In many places, you always use a spoon with the chopsticks.  I've only seldom ever seen a meat cleaver be the second utensil of choice, though.

In some Chinese dialects, there's a common saying, "You can't clap with one hand, and you can't eat with one chopstick."

There are food historians who will tell that chopsticks are the sign of the most highly developed culinary culture. Only the unwashed infadels require two or more utensils.

Actually we do use two chopsticks at a time here in Asia.  But only 1 hand.

If there was, it was one way.  They had the camera on Kinsler the whole time, and he didnt say a word.  Ump fined him after the helmet toss, then with the shin guard toss came the ejection

I thought he might have said something on the previous low pitch (the 3rd pitch of the AB, I think).  But I am not sure.

Bagwell is an absolute joy to listen to.  Mentions that Hunter has gone to a 34" bat but choking up makes it feel like a 32" but with greater density, which he really likes.  Also mentions that he is using both eyes to look at the pitcher now, which allows his back eye to help identify the slider.

I'm really loving hearing Bagwell on the broadcast.  I hope he decides he likes it and wants to take more games next year.

How about rather than changing the rules and revising rulings and adding instant replay the league find a group of 70 or so individuals who can make obvious calls like "out" when a fielder beats a runner to a bag by a full step or "foul" when a ball lands two feet foul of the line when the umpire is standing ten feet away rather than the self-satisfied and belligerent group of fat motherfuckers they employ now?

They should relegate umpires. Take a vote among players and managers at the end of the year and the worst tenth or quarter or third or whatever it is get fired and their replacements brought up from minor leagues based on a similar vote there. This umpire for life bullshit that the league employs now is certainly not working.

Ooooh.  Something that sensible, and that easy.
Well, yeah.  That would work too.

216
Game Zone 2010 Archive / Re: Astros vs. Gnats, 6/2/10
« on: June 02, 2010, 09:55:00 pm »
I don't think any decision should be retroactive.  Just like any other new rule or rule change, it only takes effect for games played after it is instituted.

And only controversial calls should be reviewed.  Maybe review is only done if the manager requests it within a certain amount of time after the last out.

But I agree that they can't change this to a perfect game.  As the rules are, there is no way to challenge an ump's call.  What he says, is.  It was a bad call, but it is official.

217
Game Zone 2010 Archive / Re: Astros vs. Gnats, 6/2/10
« on: June 02, 2010, 09:44:36 pm »
They can create a new ruling for the official scorer — error on the ump. It doesn't change the outcome of the game (wins and losses), but can change the way something is scored.  So, tonight's would still be a perfect game, with the batter taking first on EU3 (error on ump at 1B).  A missed homerun call would still be ruled a HR, but with the batter stopping at 2B on the error.  Official scorer having access to instant replay, but it not affecting the calls made during the course of the game.

They'd never do it, but it could preserve the records without changing the outcome of the game as played out on the field.  Then again, I am sure there are plenty of problems with this idea too.

How about everytime a player speaks negatively (directly or indirectly) through the press about his organization and especially his teammates, he's out of line.

Completely agree.

222

Berkman: "That's his deal," he said. "I really don't have anything to say."  [oxymoron alert?]

And here it is (also from McTaggart's blog)...

"The difference between a horrendous offense and a scrappy offense is your pitching staff. You win, 2-1, and it's, 'You broke up a double play' and 'You got a big hit from Hunter [Pence],' and that's why you won, 2-1. If you lose, 3-2, you didn't muster anything."

But Berkman admitted the offense needs to do its part, too.

I love travel around China.  Hunan is probably my favorite holiday spot that I've visited. Though the trip I took to Sichuan 15 years or so ago is probably one of the most memorable.  The way things have changed over here since then, it's an experience that can't ever really be duplicated.  The very rugged areas we visited back then are now accessible by private helicopter, and overrun by tourist, from what I hear.

If it is true that Cooper convinced Wade to start the clock on a young prospect that Wade & the rest were originally wanting to hold back, I think you have a basis for your fear.  I don't like the idea that Cooper got so much say on this one.  If he really did.

So far I know about as much as a 4 year old in China would know but its surprisingly not as hard as I was expecting. That's just learning the "alphabet", pronunciations and pinyin system though.

As much as a 4 year old?  That's pretty good, actually.

Make sure and give good attention to this part, the pronunciation and pinyin, etc.  It is really important to have a good foundation.  When I speak to someone on the phone, they don't know I am not Chinese, all because I was DRILLED on this stuff by my first teacher.

Here's one for you:  baseball = bang4 qiu2

Good luck with it.  I've been at it for 17 years, and there is always so much more to learn.  It's fun, though.

You're learning Mandarin?  I am fluent, and am watching the Astros on MLB TV in Shanghai right now.  For real.

I have noticed too that Smith is being asked to do something that he isn't really capable of.  I am not sure yet, though, that it is because Cooper (or anyone else) really wants him in this role exactly.  Seems to me it is more because we happen to have 2 gimpy infielders at the same time in Keppinger and Matsui.  That puts Blum necessarily in an every day role, and exposes Smith's weaknesses at the plate all the more.

I am hoping in these early days of the season that Keppinger might just step up and show that he really wants the starting job at 3rd, which puts Blum back into the "uber utility role."  I don't know if it is possible for this to actually happen, however good the early signs are looking for Keppinger, but it would be a very good thing if that pans out, I think.  Either way, I think the overexposure of Smith's weaknesses comes more from having unfortunate health issues than from an intentional/ignorant misuse of the player.  At least, I really hope so.

And, I am another who thinks that the team has the potential to be good.

Strangers, Gods, and Monsters by Richard Kearney
A Man Without a Country (Vonnegut) - very funny reading
The Devil in the White City (Erik Larson) - the writing is good enough to be fiction, but it is not
(ETA) - The Anatomy of Baseball anthology by Yogi Berra (Foreword), Lee Gutkind (Editor), Andrew Blauner (Editor)

Fiction:

Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series is really funny stuff (The Eyre Affair is the first in the series)
The Art of Racing in the Rain (Garth Stein) is pretty good
The Book Thief (Markus Zusak)

That's certainly something I wouldn't have expected before the season started.  This team is full of surprises, even this early in the season.  Seems they are finding a way to take care of business, and it really is fun to watch.

I'm blaming these two runs on the announcers. They were going on about Geary not having been scored upon up to this point in the season.  And then there it is, a two-run double.

Talk Zone / Re: Not a bad first series
« on: April 04, 2008, 10:23:23 pm »

Not necessarily.  You have to plant your back foot to throw, and when he did it just went out from under him.  He has the presence to go ahead and get the out at home.  Just one of them things.

Right.  My point in bringing it up was to say that it was good to see him keep his head in the game and get the runner at home, despite the trouble he had on the play.

296
Talk Zone / Re: Not a bad first series
« on: April 04, 2008, 05:50:27 am »
Agree with the above observations.  On the defense, there was a play in the second game where the bases were loaded and a ball was hit to Wiggington.  He fumbled it a bit, missing the chance for a double play, but managed to recover quickly and get the out at home.  I wish he'd have been smoother on the DP ball, but at least it didn't unravel from there.

Oh great, Bourn made a sweet play.  I didn't want to see that anyway.  Fuck it.

Amy, you've been my eyes many times.  Odd that I can now return the favor from the other side of the world (China, at the moment, watching via MLB TV).

Bourn's throw was right on the money.  It was nice to see Loretta, backing up the play (Tejada made the tag) jump up and down and pump his fist, then point to Bourn.  The talk about "no chemistry" over the offseason seems now to have been premature.  It is one of the things I noticed in the game last night and today — they seem to be actually enjoying playing together as a team.  Nice.

Talk Zone / Re: There was a game last night

I really enjoyed watching Tejada's ABs too.  He is a smart hitter.  I have not had the opportunity to see him in game situations very often in the past, but from what I saw last night, I think I am going to enjoy watching him this year.

Michael Bourn.  Watching him was very heartening.  It looks like he is going to be a good fit in an area the Astros had a glaring need at the end of last season, and I am glad he is going to be here for a long time.

Wright and Geary both looked good.  I like that Wright regained his composure after getting behind in the count.  It might also be a lot of fun to watch him develop over the course of the season.

It wasn't all bad.  Bourn was fun to watch on the basepaths and in the field.  Tejada's ABs were good (despite the overly aggressive baserunning).  Geary and Wright with good outings.
