Alpha Beta was a marketing concept referring to organizing groceries in the store in alphabetic order. Albertson's eventually bought out Skaggs.
Rockets are crushing Minnesota.
Not sure if we should attribute this change in circumstances to SD’s arrival, Greg’s jinxing, or some combination of the two.

I'm here now. Did I miss anything?
...and Marwin's OPS is below .600
I'm sure Greg M meant duct-taping McHugh or Fiers to a Martes, Paulino, K.Tucker type deal. Give the CHiSox, for instance, an inning eater while the young pitchers graduate from the minors.
My political bloodlust is pathological. I pretty much hate all politicians, some more than others. I seem to always vote for whom I hate the least.
I can recommend my old haunt, Colorado Springs. Heavily dependent on the military but there's a fair amount of other tech too. And of course, a large tourism industry. Over 300 days of sunshine a year and enough outdoor activities to keep anyone busy. The flanks of Pikes Peak are a great playground.
It's out of the way but SW Colorado is beautiful. The train from Durango to Silverton. Ouray. Telluride. It is. But I want a moderate city now with outdoor access and a strong enough economy to employ me.
Where in NM, Greg?Santa Fe mostly. But I spent years in Albuquerque and some time in taos. Currently driving from Houston to Santa Fe via Lubbock.
And if you're not exactly like everyone else, you REALLY don't fit in. It's the most homogenous, can't-think-outside-the-box, Stepford-like town I've ever seen.
Just my 2 cents: if you're middle-aged and single, Denver would be my pick of your shortlist. Mrs Limey loved-loved-loved Austin having lived there during and after her college days. She hated moving to Houston and always wanted to go back. On a recent visit back to Austin, though, she was shocked at how trashy it was to go out. Bunch of drunk college kids running around.
Now I'm not saying that there's nothing to Austin but 6th Street; of course that's not true. But it's a small town dominated by a huge college, so that's a big part of what happens there. So, unless you're a huge music buff, go to Denver. I have seen friends of mine turn around their lives completely by moving there and embracing the active lifestyle which...not coincidentally...is a great way to meet people to have sex with.
I like San Antonio. Never lived there, and I won't, principally because my mother in law does. But I always enjoy the town. Not a huge fan of Denver, and especially not Boulder. I realize that's probably not particularly helpful.
I'll take the panthers. The defenses are pretty even, Cam makes the difference. I'll say it ends up 24-17.
I also want the panthers to win, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for them.
Not talking about this game alone.Shit happens. They lost the last game. Doesn't mean they couldn't win this one.
I wish that was the case. But so far this series has been a bullpen failure. Still time left.2 hits won't cut it

Yes. Or you could sign up for a free trial with any one of dozens of commercial VPNs.
He's stated he wants to build through the draft and development. That isn't necessarily mutually exclusive with spending money through free agency, but given the state of the organization avoiding and getting rid of big contracts is probably the prudent (and wise) strategy.
China has only one time zone, doesn't it (or only recognizes one)? We could do that.
Four. Wandy, Norris, Paulino, Wright, Lyles. That's five. What else do you need?

It is now official. Berkman and cash to Yankees for RHP Mark Melanon and IF Jimmy Paredes. Astros purchase 1b Brett Wallace from Round Rock.
Here's what Mike Axisa had to say about Melancon's repertoire:
Melancon regained his pre-TJ stuff by the end of 2008, sitting 92-94 and touching 96 with good life on his fastball. His out pitch is a hard 12-to-6 curveball that he can drop in for strike one or use to get chases for strike three. He toyed with a splitter in college, however the Yanks had him scrap in favor of a true changeup that is now a usable third pitch.
If the Astros just swapped Oswalt and $11MM for Happ, Gose and Villar, they have been officially anally raped without lube.
Pam Gardner works wonders.
Michael friggin' Bourn! 8-3 DP.
Mechanics have changed. He's very stiff. He's gonna start leaving pitches up like this.
That first paragraph alone is refreshing.
everything i have read is quite the opposite. happiness just prior is not uncommon because they HAVE figured the way out.
how did he do on the last road trip? how about Monday?
maybe he drank too much viagra?
How did he pronounce it? I've never heard it spoken. Pawned? Poned? Puh-wuh-ned?
Lotaburger may not be the *best* burger, but it's kind of a nostalgia thing we me as well. I just have to go when I'm there. I guess it'd be like Whataburger for many Texans who live where they can't get one.
If I'm getting a burger in New Mexico, it's a green chile cheeseburger from Lotaburger.
Try the green chile enchiladas at Guadalupe Cafe for lunch.
Like Mark, I struggled at the plate when I first started playing softball. The biggest adjustment is staying back. I would exhale a deep breath as the pitcher was releasing the ball and once the ball started coming down from it's apex, I would then load up on my back foot with a high leg kick that I would have never use in baseball. The extra weight provided by the high leg kick helps provide more power, but it's worthless if you don't wait on the pitch and move your weight forward too soon. That's the hardest part of the timing, is when to begin your swing and I will just say, wait as long as possible. Other than that I don't really change anything with my swing and I hit a softball with a lot of power to all fields.
You're pulling the ball because you're not staying back, but if you continue to pull the ball even if you feel you are waiting on the pitch, then scoot out in the batter's box (away from plate) and get your hands inside of the ball. This will help you hit the ball to center field. Also, stand back in the box as much as possible at all times. Hope this rambling helps.

Is Carlos that slow or did he just loaf? (I presume the answer is yes and yes).
I like Demonoid for music.
My blackberry battery life is about 16 hours. It sucks.
OSF....i was hoping you'd put this together again this year. This list beats anyone out there because of all the info you get into it. If i'm not mistaken the 'Scouting' column is new this year...good work
Iraq, India, Turkey, Africa...the list is endless.
Before I moved here, I was under the impression that NY's rival (not just in sports) was Boston. Now that I'm here I realize how terribly incorrect that is. No one, outside of Yankees fans during a game, gives a fuck about that third rate burgh. People don't even roll their eyes, they just wonder "who cares?" out loud.
How have I never heard of this guy? Am I going senile already?
Paulino, Yordany, and Manzella for Peavy. Too much?
McCain telling a crowd at his own campaign rally: "Obama is a decent man and would make a fine President" was stupid X 100 IMHO.
McCain's failure to bring up Obama's shady past personal associations in the debate was mind boggling.
If he does it now, it smells of desperation.
I didn't realize that Alaska was a make or break state in the Presidential election. Nationally, her approval ratings aren't all that hot and keep on falling...
Her approval ratings in that state are through the roof. Bully's don't tend to get high ratings.
Obama referred to today as "The Messiah" by Farrakhan. A supporter.
Welfare for everybody (Public health care. And you think bailing out Wall Street was expensive?),
stickin' it to the man (anybody that makes a living or does job creating investments)
and cozy dinners with foreign dictators that fucking HATE us (Why is it so important that everybody LIKE us??? People die everyday trying to get here. We must be doing something right. No? Why the obsessive need for the worlds approval?)
Very sad, but Obidon may be necessary to finally learn the lesson that higher taxes and playing prison bitch to every foreign dictator isn't such a great thing for the United States.
I'll go on record and say that I've not noticed the adams apple and the hard on is real. I could leave the beer goggles at home and tap that. Based on the size of her family, diaper duty ain't the only thing Todd is getting at home. Vulgarity aside, I happen to like her politics.
but is already MORE qualified to lead the country than Obama.
Palin commands no respectis hatedfor nonemanyof the same reasons Reagan was one of the most popular presidents everhated. She is a true neophyte with little potentialconservative. She connects very well with the American hickspeople. She is a governor with hardly anyrealexecutive experience. She differs from Reagan because she's nothing like himof her gender (adams apple comment aside) and that makes her an enormous threat to the left.
What??? Are we talking about the same Reagan? I thought he was just some dopey, B-movie has been, that didn't have any foreign policy experience. Hmmmm. The things we learn on this board. <sarcasm meter running high>
I agree that Palin needs some seasoning, but she is the damn closest reincarnation of the past century's greatest President that I've seen. I still think she should have bowed out of the nomination due to her daughter, but now that she's in, that's one hell of an impressive woman. I make the comparison to Reagan because she has an incredible charisma that transcends the medias ability to cut her off at the knees. Reagan had that in spades.
The media was looking to Dan Quayle Palins ass after that debate. Make no mistake about that. She then proceeds to win the debate (slight edge, not a landslide) AND THEN tells the media to go fuck themselves. Paraphrasing: "I appreciate a forum such as this that allows me to bypass the mainstream media and speak directly with the American people.". Go Sarah!
Regardless of this years election results, Palin is on the political map and will be seen again. While on topic, has anybody else noticed the nob slobbing by team Clinton for the McCain/Palin ticket? I thought they were in it ALL THE WAY for Obama? It's so transparent it's funny. Team Clinton damn sure does not want Obidon in 08. If Obidon wins, then team Clinton will do everything possible to screw them so as to set the stage for Hillary 2012.
With losses by the Mets, Marlins and Cardinals tonight, and a win by the Phillies, here are where things stand in the NL:
Divisions:
Cubs have clinched the Central.
Phillies magic number is 4 in the East.
Dodgers magic number is 5 in the West.
Wild Card:
Mets (86/70): 3 vs. Cubs; 3 vs. Marlins.
Brewers (85/71): 3 vs. Pirates; 3 vs. Cubs. Elimination number = 6
Astros (82/73): 3 vs. Reds; 3 vs. Braves; 1 vs. Cubs. Elimination number = 4
Marlins (81/75): 3 at Nationals; 3 at Mets. Elimination number = 2
Cardinals (80/76): 3 vs. Diamondbacks; 3 vs. Reds. Elimination number = 1
I believe Mr. Bourn could use some media training. First the spitting while Patti was talking to him, then walking in front of her while she was speaking after the interview. Bidge would not approve. BTW, very weird seeing him sitting in the stands. He seemed to talk non-stop. Would love to hear him talk baseball when he's not in cautious media mode.
I suspect that he sweats at room temperature.
BTW - did y'all catch what Brownie and JD said about the Bourn move? "This game and *maybe* for the rest of the weekend... then Cooper will re-evaluate whether to leave him there" - Brownie. "This is a move to take pressure off of Michael for a weekend, let him relax" - JD.
Eggszactly!
"Screw you Pallilo!" - Me.
Overcame a 6-run deficit today. Last time that happened was the 2000 season.
What happened?
Towles looks completely different tonight. He is right on top of the plate.
Matsui's game is that of a contact hitter. For a contact hitter to help a team win at the 2 spot in the lineup, you need someone to get on base so he can either 1) move the runner over, 2) hit and run, 3) drive in the runner if said runner steals a base or 4) get on himself so more traffic can help the next hitters coming up.
Matsui being a rally starter is just not his game as much as it probably should be. Matsui success will be tempered by how well the leadoff guys does in front of him. Then he becomes a very dangerous hitter because he can do so many things with the bat control he has.
The Brewers seemed a good example of what will happen if your bullpen is not up to snuff.
I wouldn't be surprised if 2 or even 3 of the current relievers were replaced.
Nor would I be surprised if Wade were able to secure a #3-#4 level starting pitcher in July.
Matsui is not an easy out.
Sampson with 72 pitches already. Seems like that should be enough. When did Moehler pitch last?
Geez, it's 2-1 in the 2nd, Mr. negative.
Other then the one game against SD where Brocail gave up 4 runs in a third of an inning, he has been simply outstanding this season. This is his team high 13th appearance.
What the hell was Pence doing?
FUCK YOU LARUSSA
Roy is carving up the strike zone.
I have a hard time staying up for these West Coast start times.
did they call the game?
I'll tell you what, boys, WadeSmith made some good moves. Add a good pitcher to this bunch, and look out.
cf. Kitty Genovese, Stanley Milgram, The Nazis, et. al.
Ha they call it a splitter. Didn't know Roy through a splitter.
So, was everyone holding their breath in that Oswalt inning?
Pence has said he's a notorious slow starter, last year he hit .195 the first month in RR. Bourn is here for his D and speed, we can wait on his bat.
I have no idea. Got any ideas of what they are?
How long do they let him struggle like this before doing something?
if the pitching can stay respectable....
why did Lieber want to go there to pitch relief?
BOURNE!!!!!!
Berkman basically golfed that line drive for a double. Sweet looking swing.
I'm afraid that the Cubs are going to be better than we're admitting. I would hate to see those bastards run away with the division.
Pence could fill in at leadoff or #2 if need be.
All Australian cities, save Adelaide and Perth, are on the east coast. Ayres rock is just a little west of dead centre. Santiago is not in Australia.
I'd say Gutierrez is pretty close to a lock for the rotation.
We still have plenty of cash for a pitcher, I love this deal.
"We just felt with the addition of [outfielder Michael] Bourn at top of the order, if we could come up with a solid run producing second baseman, that would enhance our club."
I'm not convinced that a 1A/1B pitcher wouldn't make the difference.
I mostly excited about Scola. Francis, I could have done without. But if he takes away from, or facilitates the trade of Rafer Alston I'm all for it.
Wonderful- just wonderful. I laughed. I don't comprehend the rampant anti-semetic viewpoint that comes from the Euros. You'd think after killing like 12 million jews they'd pause, reflect and reorder their thinking. I swear that could happen again with the right mix of lunacy and cowardice (including the part of the US).
Don't want to get too political. I think this bad boy is fixing to get nuked anyway- I won't participate in being the final straw I hope.
Trade him to Round Rock for Hunter Pence.
(tee-hee)
Garner is a hard headed son of a bitch, isn't he?
Ok, cool. We won. So, no emotional bullshit...what do we do with Lidge?
Alright, so it's June. Roger says he'll return. Woody's ERA stands in the mid-5s. Can we convince Woody to retire?
Fuck no. I have long been a Game Day Audio subscriber and an Extra Innings subscriber. I can't get Extra Innings through my cable provider, so I've been trying to upgrade my GDA to some flavor of MLB TV. So far none of those dumb cocksuckers has replied to an email about upgrading. Of course they claim they will respond within 48 hours.
So I'm using a slingbox sort of arrangement at the moment. Do you have the 700k? Does anyone have any feedback on its quality?
This team's defense is bad and getting worse. Wow.
The throw was fine. Bidge didn't catch it.
There is no way I could figure out how to do this. I actually have a pretty big screen for my desktop, so I guess this set up is about as good as I'm going to get.
OK what am I doing wrong? I can't figure out how to post an image.
But the weather looks Jimmy Buffett-shitty
My A's-Card was Walling.
Anyway, Kent Bottenfield.
Brewers, Angels
Geez, finally. Leon Roberts. That was tough.
Cleveland, Cincinnati.
We'll see. I bet he ain't closing much longer.
You have to think he was brought in today in a totally no-pressure situation to get a solid inning in against a decent team. Oops.
Admit it, you want the terrorists to win.
Communist.
Isn't it just on sundays now?
Made Pujols look stupid. Carved up the plate with a few 2 seamers then threw a nasty slider off the outside corner and Pujols whiffed badly.
Is it too early to say we really need to lock this Jennings guy up?
He heard Greg call him a pussy.
It's official:
It's going to be a long fucking season.
I'm not getting pong sounds anymore. My "feedback" must have gotten through.
MoBerg will be in the 2 hole tomorrow night against a righty.
Two games in, and I already think Garner has lost his fucking mind.
Oh, I hope they play all night. And trade Lidge for a prospect.
I bet that guy would love to see what Ensberg could do in the #2 hole.
I.did.not.need.to.see.mo.fan.love.fest.

Pence scores on a bloop double, it is now 11-3. Pence is now on the bench working on the cure for cancer.

There is wayyyyyyyyyy too much red in baseball. At least the DBacks came up with something unique... I like their current style, for one. Ditching a unique style to copy another team's colors is a horrible idea IMHO.

I found the quality passable last year. Apparantly, they have doubled the screen resolution for the year. I'll find out tonight!!!!!!!!!!!

I like this quote:Quote:
The brouhaha gathered steam Friday when Cuba's Communist Party newspaper, Granma, called the sign-waving "a cowardly incident."
Those macho commies, their reaction to any snub is to call it an act of cowardice. Remember, it was cowardly when Castro's team was orignally not going to be allowed to participate.
And macho Americans haven't used the coward card in the past couple of years? Political name calling can be very effective.
I don't know why you got to drag politics into this... baseball topic.
I'm talking about a dictator's own personal newspaper's comment about a guy with a poster at a baseball game in Puerto Rico. Now I'm confused. Do you think the thing in San Juan was the same as an act terrorism? Or you think that an act of terrorism is as innocuous as a guy holding up a poster up at a ballgame? Or are we talking about two different things that you lumped together for the hell of it?

This is pure cock and balls. If, according to the article, Hirsh AND Nieve could win a spot AND Buchholz is fully recovered from his surgeries, why on earth would the astros even consider trading any young pitcher of any value for some crappy old brett tomko kind of guy?
Quote:
I can't freakin' believe they're coming to Colorado the first week of May again! Doesn't MLB know that it SNOWS the first week of May in Denver? Sheesh.
And yes, I second your statement. Hopefully Backe will take his home game on the road for that series.

3. McCarver's an idiot-- but he did catch Bob Gibson so we have to listen to him.
Of course, Gibson once said of McCarver "the only thing he knows about good pitching is that it's hard to hit".

Now that the Stros MADE THE MOTHER FUCKING WORLD SERIES, I can answer that question.
No.

[Please - don't tell me that Purp wasn't ripped my everyone in the media for not trading for Griffey/Sweeney, etc. If it had been Hunsiker here, Burke and/or Zeke would've been wearing different uniforms by now. It's amazing what happens to your farm system when you value your prospects like that.

I think that little tidbit on Felix says it all.

Why not go to the team with established Venezuelans like Minnosota and Philadelphia?
Quote:
Quick - name more than 3 teams anywhere near the Red Sox's payroll - they'll always be a special case. The whole point I'm making is there is a difference between having one of your academy players flourish compared to having an American player flourish. If we'd traded Scott Elarton instead, even if he'd stayed healthy, Freddy Garcia would have given us more leverage to cherrypick top-tier Venezuelan talent (you know, like we used to when we had the top farm system in baseball).

and that Purpura has done a better job of not depleting the farm system like Hunsiker did.
Quote:
The point I'm making is that as long as these 16 yr olds are free agents instead of entered in an international draft, we should be valuing our international talent a lot more (i.e. not using them as trade bait) if we want to be competitive in South and Central America. You think Felix Hernandez is going to want to come here if we traded his idol - or if we have no other venezuelans in the Majors because we traded all of them?

Oh, the other side of NM. I just never even noticed that before. Funny. I'm in El Paso, Texas which is actually part of New Mexico, and you're in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which is the real capital of Colorado.

Everett's been swinging well so I'd let him hit. Two runs are better than one. You at least hope that Everett would hit one to the OF or to the right side. But he couldn't do anything. He as pretty worthless that AB.
As far as Lane, it really wasn't that close. Has anybody noticed that Lane is one slide shy of the cycle? All he needs is to take out Pujols on a close play at first.
Maybe he is a dirty player. At least he has been getting on base.
