The team OBP is good. SLG is dismal outside of Springer and Correa.

The Astros are 10th in batting average and 7th in runs scored in the AL.  I'm itching for Gattis and Fisher to have a short leash.   And sadly, until Marwin can hit a breaking ball, he should not play everyday.

Alpha Beta was a marketing concept referring to organizing groceries in the store in alphabetic order. Albertson's eventually bought out Skaggs.

Not sure if we should attribute this change in circumstances to SD’s arrival, Greg’s jinxing, or some combination of the two.

I'm sure Greg M meant duct-taping McHugh or Fiers to a Martes, Paulino, K.Tucker type deal. Give the CHiSox, for instance, an inning eater while the young pitchers graduate from the minors.

Yes.  Thanks for the translation.

Chron reports that Gourriel will be promoted to the club on Tuesday.

I googled him and the article popped up.   No I don't read the Chronicle.  Anyway, I don't see much talk about him.  I have a Cuban-American friend who is a rabid baseball fan and he thinks that Gourriel will be a top 3 3B in MLB.  He's higher on him as a hitter than Cepedes, and he's a Mets fan.

What are the thoughts/expectations of him?  His AA debut wasn't noteworthy, but that doesn't mean anything.  All the focus right now is on the kids.  Should we be talking more about this guy?

Linux looked dead in the water with software of note not being produced for years. The only reason I use a dual boot with Windows is that I'm waiting for Steam and other products to get up to date on Linux. I've even broken from Microsoft Office. LibreOffice is comprehensive, but lacks some of the eye candy of Office. If you want the stability of a Mac for no operating system cost, Linux is a viable option. I don't get the brand loyalty to Microsoft.

I can recommend my old haunt, Colorado Springs.   Heavily dependent on the military but there's a fair amount of other tech too.  And of course, a large tourism industry.    Over 300 days of sunshine a year and enough outdoor activities to keep anyone busy.    The flanks of Pikes Peak are a great playground.

I've been an independent my entire life.  Today, I registered as a Democrat.  Republican party is nuts.  Springs is way too right wing for me.  Beautiful city though.

And if you're not exactly like everyone else, you REALLY don't fit in.  It's the most homogenous, can't-think-outside-the-box, Stepford-like town I've ever seen.

Just my 2 cents: if you're middle-aged and single, Denver would be my pick of your shortlist.  Mrs Limey loved-loved-loved Austin having lived there during and after her college days.  She hated moving to Houston and always wanted to go back.  On a recent visit back to Austin, though, she was shocked at how trashy it was to go out.  Bunch of drunk college kids running around.

Now I'm not saying that there's nothing to Austin but 6th Street; of course that's not true.  But it's a small town dominated by a huge college, so that's a big part of what happens there.  So, unless you're a huge music buff, go to Denver.  I have seen friends of mine turn around their lives completely by moving there and embracing the active lifestyle which...not coincidentally...is a great way to meet people to have sex with.

Good advice.  I've been a career student.  Time to separate myself from that environment.

I like San Antonio.  Never lived there, and I won't, principally because my mother in law does.  But I always enjoy the town.  Not a huge fan of Denver, and especially not Boulder.  I realize that's probably not particularly helpful.

I went to grad school in Boulder and hated everything but my house and a few friends.  Denver is way different.  Boulder is all upper-middle class white granola folk.  I don't run marathons, so I don't fit in.

I'm about done with New Mexico.  I need a change.  I'm considering potential cities to move to.  Right now it's Austin and Denver.  I'm thinking about San Antonio too, but other than my couple of trips as a kid to the Alamo and riverwalk, I know nothing of the city.  Does it have a Houston or Austin vibe?  Something between?

Thanks.  Would appreciate some insight.

I'll take the panthers. The defenses are pretty even, Cam makes the difference. I'll say it ends up 24-17.
I also want the panthers to win, I've always had a bit of a soft spot for them.

He did make the difference by not diving for the football on the fumble.

Couple of other things off the top of my head.  There are hot spring in the Jemez mountain range near Los Alamos, but I don't recommend them unless you want to sit next to dirty and naked hippies.  Instead, hit up 10,000 Waves in Santa Fe up the ski basin road.  It's a Japanese style bath house.  Great massages, hot tub, and sauna.  Another place is north in the middle of no where called Ojo Caliente.  I've never been there, but have heard great things.

Further up north there is Pagosa Springs, CO.  IF you like spring skiing, this is the spot.  Wolfe Creek gets more snow than any ski resort in Colorado and it's about a 3-4 hour drive from ABQ.  It's a good time.  The New Mexico resorts probably won't have much snow, but if they do Santa Fe is a nice mountain with a good mix of simple and challenging terrain.  Taos is typically for the more advanced skier as it has really steep slopes.

Most of northern New Mexico activities, outside of the art and food scene, revolve around the outdoors.  Enjoy!

Beer and Queso / Re: Albuquerque info

I lived in Albuquerque for a few years.  The two most common things to do are to take the Sandia tram to the top and check out the hot air balloon scene. It was the longest tram in the world, but is now 2nd to one in like Bulgaria, or at least that's what I heard.  I prefer driving around the backside and hiking to the top.  You can also drive up there from the east side.  Hiking the Sandias from the west side closer to Albuquerque is nice for a bit, although there isn't much for tree cover.  It's much nicer around back.  Balloon fiesta is amazing.  Early in the morning you can see hot air balloons year round in the landscape.

Albuquerque is a very easy city to orient to.  Get lost?  Find the Sandias and that's due east.  Everything is laid out in a grid.

I spent most of my time in Nob Hill which is a yuppie/hipster area.  I used to spend a lot of time downtown on or near Central frequenting the bars for live music.  Alas, I'm too old for that now being at the ripe age of 38, except for the Launchpad.  Launchpad (minimal cover) and Burt's Tiki Lounge (free) are the places to catch music on the cheap.  I've seen some amazing shows at the Launchpad which is a small venue that holds only about 150 people.  I've seen Beirut, Calexico, the Album Leaf, Brett Dennon, and a whole lot more there.

Outside of ABQ, there are some cool Pueblos to check out.  Acoma is really beautiful due west on I40.  Up north, Taos is fun to check out for a day or 2.  You can raft the Rio Grande gorge, the Box, which is always a good time.  Around Los Alamos, there is Bandalier National Park with ancient native cliff dwellings.  It's pretty cool and also good for kids.  Northern New Mexico is really beautiful.  There is plenty of info on Santa Fe.  I've lived there too, and briefly in Taos.  My parents are in Santa Fe.

Let me know if you need more info.

Ha.  Al Jazeera's the best way to follow what's going on in the world and the Middle East.  Although, I'll hand it to Anderson Cooper and his 360 crew.  They covered Egypt extremely well.  It was over for Mubarak after Cooper got smashed in the face a few times.

Back to the original topic, Pandora's a nice feature of Roku too.  There are a ton of dirt cheap movie channels you can get with classic flicks.  Access to Amazon's 'on demand' streaming movies is great too.  It's only like $3 per movie.

I couldn't imagine an Egypt without women having a vote.  Many, especially in the lower classes, I'd imagine will vote like their husbands.

It's said that Coptics are the closest in ethnic origin to ancient Egyptians.  Egypt has been conquered so many times that it's hard to label them as 'Arab'.  I remember having a beer with some friends and getting in a drunken ruckus with an Egyptian friend who has utterly offended and very defensive when I referred to Egyptians as Arabs.

It is now official. Berkman and cash to Yankees for RHP Mark Melanon and IF Jimmy Paredes. Astros purchase 1b Brett Wallace from Round Rock.

Doesn't seem to bad for a rental.  Paredes looks to project to be a utility infielder or better.  Scouting report on Melanon:

Quote
Here's what Mike Axisa had to say about Melancon's repertoire:

Melancon regained his pre-TJ stuff by the end of 2008, sitting 92-94 and touching 96 with good life on his fastball. His out pitch is a hard 12-to-6 curveball that he can drop in for strike one or use to get chases for strike three. He toyed with a splitter in college, however the Yanks had him scrap in favor of a true changeup that is now a usable third pitch.

everything i have read is quite the opposite. happiness just prior is not uncommon because they HAVE figured the way out.

The time people are most at risk for suicide is when their depression starts to lift.  They have more energy, but still carry intense feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness.  Having the energy with the recent torment in mind makes for a horrible combination.

As far as terminal illnesses, there have been numerous studies that have shown that persons with cancer, AIDS, etc. who have also gone through a major depressive episode state that the mental anguish from the depression is far greater.  I also have bipolar, and no I've never attempted suicide nor do I have a terminal illness.  Hopefully, I'll never have to contrast my disorder with certain death.  I cannot fathom anything being worse than my darkest days.

The tragedy here is that mood disorders are VERY treatable today.  There's no excuse for a person with access to quality mental health to not be treated.  I have no idea if Powell reached out for help.  If he didn't seek professional help, that is the serious underlying issue.  For that he'd be guilty.  You could blame society as well for the stigma associated with mental illness.  Seeking out help's not always an easy step to take given that so many still do not see mental illness as a medical condition despite the abundance of genetic, neurochemical and neuroimaging research.  If your brain is structurally or functionally messed up, it doesn't matter how hard you pull on your boots.

I feel for Powell's children.  My mother attempted suicide when I was 13 for recurrent major depression, an illness that lies more on the bipolar spectrum than the other depressive disorders.  Today, she's a totally different person, content with life.   I count my blessings that I have her and I have her healthy.  But to be selfish, I couldn't bear to see her persist in the mental state she was in for close to two decades.

While I agree that suicide is a selfish act, we don't know what type of personal distress this man was under.  People don't shot themselves in the head to piss off people in a BBS.  They have deep-seeded issues and many suffer a darkness that no person should experience.  If the man had bipolar disorder, 10-15% of people with the disorder end their own lives.  Selfish?  Yeah.  But there's an undeniable pervasive pain that these people live with that no person can truly empathize with unless they've been down a similar road.

Lotaburger may not be the *best* burger, but it's kind of a nostalgia thing we me as well.  I just have to go when I'm there.  I guess it'd be like Whataburger for many Texans who live where they can't get one.

Whataburger ain't got a thing on Lotaburger.

92
The Stinky Pinky?  I had many a nights of drunken debauchery there.  It's still around, and notorious as ever, I believe.  It's were all the bad people in the service industry go after their PM shifts end.  Bad people meaning 20 somethings who have no direction in their lives and do a lot of blow.  We used to go there with like 12-15 people and run up a good $350 bill.  We'd ask for the check and the bartender would be like....ummm....$100 sound good to you guys?

93

If I'm getting a burger in New Mexico, it's a green chile cheeseburger from Lotaburger.

NEVER can go wrong with those.  Place is straight out of the 60s.  Pure Angus beef and dirt cheap.  But, you can't top Bobcat.

94
Try the green chile enchiladas at Guadalupe Cafe for lunch.

Oh yeah, good spot.

95
I lived in Santa Fe and Albuquerque for far too long.  My folks are still in Santa Fe, so I visit often.

There is a plethora of expensive restaurants.  Choose wisely.  I highly recommend Santa Cafe, Coyote Cafe, even the Coyote Cantina which is cheaper and a more pleasant experience IMO, and to some extent the Compound.  I'm not a fan of Geronimo's.  It's more of the name and location that gets people there.  It's not worth the money.  Might have been at one point.  With all expensive restaurants, it always depends on who the chef is.  People come and go often in the restaurant business, so there are no guarantees.  But, those are the spots I'd chose to drop some money.  They've been consistently good.  If you're looking for NEW MEXICAN, you won't find Tex Mex, than Maria's has the best atmosphere.  Tomasita's food is a little better and closer to the hotels/downtown.  If you don't like green chile, than I wouldn't eat New Mexican as a Texan.  It's all about the green chile.

If you're looking for breakfast, in town, the Tecalote Cafe is tasty and always treats my hangovers well.  If you don't mind driving another 5 miles, Harry's Roadhouse just off the I-25 Old Pecos Trail exit is top notch.  I was a waiter there for years.  If you can, nab a back patio table or at least a place on the portale.  Good luck trying to get those spots on weekend mornings or from 12-2.  Place gets hopping.  Excellent margaritas if you go for lunch, not quite as good as the breakfast.  Another breakfast place is downtown, Pasquals.  It's a tiny spot that just gets flooded with people.  I think every hotel sends their guests there if they don't want to eat yogurt and waffles.  Oh, another spot that's fun is the Cowgirl Hall of Fame.  Food's not that great, but the drinks and atmosphere are.  There is no such thing as good BBQ in Santa Fe.  Best you'll find in New Mexico is Rudy's in Albuquerque.

A lunch spot I just thought of is way on the south end of town by the mall, Horseman's Haven.  If you're a man, get a burrito or Frito pie with the level two green chile.  Buyer beware.  It's like no other chile I've tasted.  Great burgers too.  Speaking of burgers, I think Bobcat was brought up.  Fan-fuckin'tastic.  But they have the weirdest fucking hours and it's off the beaten path, past Harry's.

At night, if you want a drink with a 30-50s crowd, head to El Farol on Canyon.  It's a cozy little joint.  Live music and the drinks aren't too overpriced.  If you want a brew, hit the Second Street Brewery.  It's tucked away from tourists, but it's not that hard to find.  Some solid tasting brews there and they have decent bar food.  I think even for a snob like yourself you won't complain about the beer too much.

That's what's coming to mind right now.  Have fun....

Like Mark, I struggled at the plate when I first started playing softball. The biggest adjustment is staying back. I would exhale a deep breath as the pitcher was releasing the ball and once the ball started coming down from it's apex, I would then load up on my back foot with a high leg kick that I would have never use in baseball. The extra weight provided by the high leg kick helps provide more power, but it's worthless if you don't wait on the pitch and move your weight forward too soon. That's the hardest part of the timing, is when to begin your swing and I will just say, wait as long as possible. Other than that I don't really change anything with my swing and I hit a softball with a lot of power to all fields.

You're pulling the ball because you're not staying back, but if you continue to pull the ball even if you feel you are waiting on the pitch, then scoot out in the batter's box (away from plate) and get your hands inside of the ball. This will help you hit the ball to center field. Also, stand back in the box as much as possible at all times. Hope this rambling helps.

Thanks man.

Palin commands no respect is hated for none many of the same reasons Reagan was one of the most popular presidents ever hated.  She is a true neophyte with little potential conservative.  She connects very well with the American hicks people.  She is a governor with hardly any real executive experience.  She differs from Reagan because she's nothing like him of her gender (adams apple comment aside) and that makes her an enormous threat to the left

What???  Are we talking about the same Reagan?  I thought he was just some dopey, B-movie has been, that didn't have any foreign policy experience.  Hmmmm.  The things we learn on this board. <sarcasm meter running high>

I agree that Palin needs some seasoning, but she is the damn closest reincarnation of the past century's greatest President that I've seen.  I still think she should have bowed out of the nomination due to her daughter, but now that she's in, that's one hell of an impressive woman.  I make the comparison to Reagan because she has an incredible charisma that transcends the medias ability to cut her off at the knees.  Reagan had that in spades.

The media was looking to Dan Quayle Palins ass after that debate.  Make no mistake about that.  She then proceeds to win the debate (slight edge, not a landslide) AND THEN tells the media to go fuck themselves.  Paraphrasing: "I appreciate a forum such as this that allows me to bypass the mainstream media and speak directly with the American people.".  Go Sarah!

Regardless of this years election results, Palin is on the political map and will be seen again.  While on topic, has anybody else noticed the nob slobbing by team Clinton for the McCain/Palin ticket?  I thought they were in it ALL THE WAY for Obama?  It's so transparent it's funny.  Team Clinton damn sure does not want Obidon in 08.  If Obidon wins, then team Clinton will do everything possible to screw them so as to set the stage for Hillary 2012.

This is the most off-the-wall comparison I've ever heard.  You're fucking crazy.  Palin is no Reagan.  Her B.S. in Journalism from a C quality school has really paid dividends for her.  Gwen Ifill gave her predictable questions and in no way did she slam dunk any of them.  She was stiff, nervous, and, other than Afghanistan, her answers were completely scripted.  Reagan?  Please...

With losses by the Mets, Marlins and Cardinals tonight, and a win by the Phillies, here are where things stand in the NL:

Divisions:
Cubs have clinched the Central.
Phillies magic number is 4 in the East.
Dodgers magic number is 5 in the West.

Wild Card:
Mets (86/70): 3 vs. Cubs; 3 vs. Marlins.
Brewers (85/71): 3 vs. Pirates; 3 vs. Cubs.  Elimination number = 6
Astros (82/73): 3 vs. Reds; 3 vs. Braves; 1 vs. Cubs.  Elimination number = 4
Marlins (81/75): 3 at Nationals; 3 at Mets.  Elimination number = 2
Cardinals (80/76): 3 vs. Diamondbacks; 3 vs. Reds.  Elimination number = 1

I feel dirty wanting the Cubs to win.  Fuck them anyway.

I believe Mr. Bourn could use some media training.  First the spitting while Patti was talking to him, then walking in front of her while she was speaking after the interview.  Bidge would not approve.  BTW, very weird seeing him sitting in the stands.  He seemed to talk non-stop.  Would love to hear him talk baseball when he's not in cautious media mode.

The Bourn interview was much more entertaining than any interview Biggio gave.  Love Biggio, but man he was boring to listen to.

I completely agree with you Noe.  No doubt Matsui will be even more valuable when Bourn gets going.  I just don't get why people keep saying, if only Bourn and Matsui would get on base, this offense would be unstoppable.  This team turned it around for a number of reasons, one being Matsui coming off the DL.  Matsui's been a big part of winning because he does the little things and has been getting on base.   Really looking forward to watching him show off his skills a little more.

187
Nice job Zipp.  Question.  Why do people keep saying that Matsui's not getting on base?  His OBP is .348.  Not sure why Matsui gets lumped in with Bourn with the top of the lineup problem(s).

Talk Zone / Re: Lee (con't)
« on: May 07, 2008, 02:29:47 pm »
Matsui's game is that of a contact hitter.  For a contact hitter to help a team win at the 2 spot in the lineup, you need someone to get on base so he can either 1) move the runner over, 2) hit and run, 3) drive in the runner if said runner steals a base or 4) get on himself so more traffic can help the next hitters coming up.

Matsui being a rally starter is just not his game as much as it probably should be.  Matsui success will be tempered by how well the leadoff guys does in front of him.  Then he becomes a very dangerous hitter because he can do so many things with the bat control he has.

Agreed.  If...errr...when Bourn gets going, Matsui's going to be able to show off his complete skill set.  My comment was toward those who've been saying, just wait until the two top of the order guy's hit.  Matsui's doing all he can at this point.  Looking forward to seeing him show off his full repertoire.

New Mexico makes sense.  The Marlins being affiliated with Albuquerque has always been a little weird.  There are a fair amount of Houston transplants in NM.  Plus, Isotopes park has a hill in CF and Orbit as a mascot.  The only thing I wouldn't like about that move is having the pitchers throw at 5000 feet.  Round Rock's ideal, but Burque wouldn't be a bad place.  Any idea when the Marlins agreement with the Isotopes ends?

Francis and the rest of the MeBA players were what turned me away from professional basketball.  The Rockets have more humility now, which is bringing back some of my interest.  I never was a fan of Francis before, but he's saying the right things:

I swear that could happen again with the right mix of lunacy and cowardice (including the part of the US).

Don't want to get too political. I think this bad boy is fixing to get nuked anyway- I won't participate in being the final straw I hope.

I wouldn't call the BBC's reporting on the Middle East antisemitic.  They do a more balanced job than the US media when it comes to the Middle East.  The Brits at least present two sides.

Fuck no. I have long been a Game Day Audio subscriber and an Extra Innings subscriber. I can't get Extra Innings through my cable provider, so I've been trying to upgrade my GDA to some flavor of MLB TV. So far none of those dumb cocksuckers has replied to an email about upgrading. Of course they claim they will respond within 48 hours.

So I'm using a slingbox sort of arrangement at the moment. Do you have the 700k? Does anyone have any feedback on its quality?

This team's defense is bad and getting worse. Wow.

Still using the 400k feed.  Curious to know if the 700k feed's worth the cost.

337
The throw was fine. Bidge didn't catch it.

Bidge did an awful job but I wouldn't call it a fine throw.

338
Quality from the team's "best" outfielder.  Outfield defense is going to be painful all season.

339
Nice pick Q.

340
There is no way I could figure out how to do this. I actually have a pretty big screen for my desktop, so I guess this set up is about as good as I'm going to get.

Did you get the 700k feed?

Orbit still rubs me the wrongway at Isotopes games (but the girl who puts on the suit is pretty damn funny).  It's a total Astros ripoff.  To boot, they have a hill in play in center field a la MMP.  Actually, they've ripped most everybody off.  Hell, they named the team after a Simpsons episode.

Even with all of the unoriginality, Isotopes Park is a great place to catch a game.  The park is terrific and having the Sandia Mountains as a backdrop is pretty sweet.

Good for you Holly.  I don't doubt that you're very familiar with your system.  I know that you've been using UNIX for a long time.  I remember you quite well from Usenet back in the early 90s.  With that said:

Fedora = Red Hat != Debian based distros like Ubuntu.  There are kernal differences and the commands are not universal.

The Link

"Among GNU/Linux distributions, there can be many variances in the base operating system (kernel and userland utilities). Some have unique methods of managing startup scripts; others mimic BSD or Unix. You can know everything there is to know about creating and modifying init scripts on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, then be totally lost when trying to implement the same changes on Gentoo Linux.

Almost all distros make their own small, custom changes to the Linux kernel in order to accommodate other changes or additions that the distribution maintainers want to make. This makes each distro's kernel unique, and probably incompatible with other distributions. Commercial desktop GNU/Linux distros usually have extensively hacked kernels that support proprietary programs like Win4Lin, VMware, and proprietary hardware drivers."

My problem with Windows is how easily it'll crash and its succeptability to viruses.  My problem with Macs is that if/when something goes wrong with the hardware, I'm pretty clueless on how to fix it.  Linux is the bomb (stable, no viruses and tons of open-source, i.e. free, software), but you've got to be a little more tech savy to use it.  There's some buzz that SUZE 10 is really user friendly making it a potential challenger to Windows.

The depth of starting pitchers is definitely a bonus but the bottom of the rotation may or may not be settled come the all-star break.  The strength of the bullpen will hopefully pick up the slack.

I'm as optimistic as you on the defense.  The offense can't be any worse than last year.  A full year of Wilson versus what was trotted out in LF last season alone will be a huge plus.  One concern are all of the low OBP guys.  Hopefully Lane, Taveras and Biggio will draw a few more walks this year.

I don't see how you can't be apprehensive when the rotation has two starting pitchers with little to no big league experience.  The depth is nice but the bullpen's probably going to get worked pretty heavily to start the season.  Hopefully Pettitte's ready to pitch deep into games while the rest of the rotation finds its groove.

I don't know why you got to drag politics into this... baseball topic.

I'm talking about a dictator's own personal newspaper's comment about a guy with a poster at a baseball game in Puerto Rico. Now I'm confused. Do you think the thing in San Juan was the same as an act terrorism? Or you think that an act of terrorism is as innocuous as a guy holding up a poster up at a ballgame? I couldn't take it after two innings.  I switched to the ESPN radio feed even though it was 2 seconds ahead.  Hearing Jon Miller after Joe and Tim was bliss, dare I say even better than that first sip of beer I had tonight.  Hell...even Morgan wasn't that annoying.  I think he's tamer on the radio.

I can't wait.  I haven't seen much of the Sox but they look like a really damn good matchup.  I hope this Series is gonna become a classic.

That misplay by Edmonds on Mo's single was completely gratifying.  I guess most of that comes from Edmonds owning the Astros for years.  We've all seen great players in a Houston uniform not play their best in the postseason.  The tide turned.  It's very very nice to be on the winning side.

I don't know, is last year's Cy Young award winner significant?

You make it sound like there are 20 Santanas.  Yeah Santana stings but how's that a knock on Hunsicker?  He wasn't anything special when he got plucked from the rule V.  He wasn't even in the running for a spot on the 40 man roster.  His stats that last year in the oganization were good but it was low A ball and his velocity was lower back then.  Obviously he's become a hell of a talent.  Good for him.  Good for the Twins.

Quote:

[Please - don't tell me that Purp wasn't ripped my everyone in the media for not trading for Griffey/Sweeney, etc. If it had been Hunsiker here, Burke and/or Zeke would've been  wearing different uniforms by now. It's amazing what happens to your farm system when you value your prospects like that.

The media?  Becuase the Chronicle and company have so much forsight with the Astros.  A Griffey trade wouldn't happen for two reasons, money and injury concerns.  BTW, don't grow too fond of Zeke and Burke.  Just bc they didn't get traded this year doesn't mean they won't be jettisoned in the right deal.  And you're right.  It's amazing that even though Hunsicker has plundered the minor league system that somehow this team still had his rookie draftees in Burke and Qualls along with his coup of a trade players of Astacio, Tavares and Scott still around.  If he had been with the team another week, who knows what would have happened?

I don't see how you can hold Purp as some minor league player development saint while calling Hunsicker a virus to the franchise.  Purp wanted a bat.  Purp didn't have any reasonable deals.  Purp didn't make a trade.  Good for Purp.  What gives you the impression that if the market wasn't there that Hunsicker would have still done a deal?  How many bad trades did he make?  What did he do in desperation to give you this fallacy?

Quote:

I think that little tidbit on Felix says it all.

Oh yeah.  Totally definative.

Quote:

Why not go to the team with established Venezuelans like Minnosota and Philadelphia?

Because they most probably won't be there when you get called up.

Quote:

Quick - name more than 3 teams anywhere near the Red Sox's payroll - they'll always be a special case. The whole point I'm making is there is a difference between having one of your academy players flourish compared to having an American player flourish. If we'd traded Scott Elarton instead, even if he'd stayed healthy, Freddy Garcia would have given us more leverage to cherrypick top-tier Venezuelan talent (you know, like we used to when we had the top farm system in baseball).

Is there really a difference between having an academy player flourish versus an American player?  I think a major fucking difference is that 10 years ago, Houston almost had a monopoly on Venezuela.  Now everbody has their hands in the basbeall talent there.  Regardless, the Astros are still producing talent from their academy.

Ok...so you're against trading young talent, especailly from one of the academies.  Your saying not to make moves that could hurt your future.  With that logic, we could all wallow in mediocrity until one year....all of these kids we covet will come togther, play amazing baseball and then the baseball world can watch in amasement.  Wouldn't that be something?  I have a dream, a dream of 25 year old Venezualan superstars carrying the Astros to the promise land.

Screw Hunsicker.  Screw him for getting the team to the playoffs 6 of the last 9 seasons.  Screw him for leaving enough young talent that the future is still looking good.  Screw him.  I have a dream.

and I was here when it was rehashed

Fantastic.

- I agree that the deal was good at the time, and I have no regrets about giving up what we gave up - I'm pointing out how the series of deals and rule V moves the Astros have made regarding players in the Venezuelan Acadamies have come back to haunt them -

You can't have your cake and eat it too.  Take a stand man.  Either the trade was good or it wasn't.  If you thought it was a good trade at the time, you should have no regrets about it now.

Which Venezualan Astros of signifcance were lost to the rule V?  If Carlos Hernandez is lost, it's becuase of a sweeping slide into second base.

Quote:

and that Purpura has done a better job of not depleting the farm system like Hunsiker did.

You're comparing apples and oranges.  Purp hasn't even been GM for a year.  I admit he's shown more faith in the younger players than Gerry.  But if he could have gotten a hitter, whose impace would have been comperable to Randy Johnson in his prime, I'm sure he would have pulled the trigger.  Instead...he held off shipping Oswalt for Dunn.  I'm not knocking Purp.  He's done the right moves so far but it's premature to be trumpeting him over Hunsicker who assembled how many postseason teams?

Quote:

The point I'm making is that as long as these 16 yr olds are free agents instead of entered in an international draft, we should be valuing our international talent a lot more (i.e. not using them as trade bait) if we want to be competitive in South and Central America. You think Felix Hernandez is going to want to come here if we traded his idol - or if we have no other venezuelans in the Majors because we traded all of them?

Have you gone down to Venezuala to find out what's important to these kids?  Do you think Freddy Garcia being an Astro is more important than the Astros putting this kid and his friends through school?  Trades are going to happen.  Quick.  Name me all of the the players on the 25 man roster for the Red Sox who were drafted by them?  You don't stop signing with a team for frear of getting traded 8 years down the line.  "Hello Epstein?  I'm sorry but I won't sign with you.  You'll trade me before I play in Fenway."

439
That was a big time move by Huniscker.  That club was probably the most complete Astros team ever, on paper anyway.  To get a player of Randy Johnson's ability, in his prime no less, to make that team complete was a monumental move by Huniscker.  Use those hindsight glasses all you want.

This has been rehashed so many times here, it's ridiculous.  Maybe when Clarks register, they can get a list of topics they should avoid unless they wanna make an ass out of themselves.
