WASHINGTON - Congress is asking the Justice Department to investigate whether former AL MVP Miguel Tejada lied to House committee staff when he was interviewed in 2005 in connection with the Rafael Palmeiro steroids case.

House Oversight and Government Committee chairman Henry Waxman opened Tuesday's hearing into the Mitchell Report about drug use in baseball by announcing that he and ranking minority member Tom Davis were sending a letter to the Justice Department on Tuesday.

"Tejada told the committee that he never used illegal performance-enhancing drugs and that he had no knowledge of other players using or even talking about steroids," Waxman said. "Well, the Mitchell Report, however, directly contradicts key elements of Mr. Tejada's testimony."

Said Davis: "We've concluded further investigation is warranted."

I don't think the stros are one of the only teams to "offer him a full time job" at 3B as long as Ensberg is on the roster.

1. I think some of us here in Astroland over rate the worth of Chris Burke. He has not proved very much so far, while Jason Jennings put up a 3.78 in Coors. He's proven to be the type of pitcher the Rockies need, and I think they'll want a proven player as the main part of a trade for him.

2. Olsen and Johnson have had pretty damn good years, are young, and are cheap. I don't think Willy and some prospects are going to get one of them.

3. I think Ballideli would be a good improvement over Willy T, and I think a deal for him is the best chance of the ones you've mentioned.

In Scott's lifetime experience in outfield, I imagine he's played outfield in parks that have left and right field roughly equal. I don't think his defence in right will be a very big problem.

And do you really think, regardless of your own opinions of the guy, that the Astros will give up on Ensberg at this point?

Do you know what my opinions are of Ensberg?

I think Lee's signing decreases the chances that the Astros will spend big money on Huff, which increases the chances that Ensberg will be playing third base for the Astros next season?

Forgive me, that was directed at Alkie.

I maintain that it ain't all that different.

If this is the way it looks, he'll get more reps out in right during spring training, etc. The world wont end with him in right.

1. LF ain't all that diffrent from RF
2. By my estimation, if Huff is resigned, and Ensberg stays on the team, Huff will platoon with Scott in right, Ensberg getting time at third.
3. Looks like a pretty decent lineup. Woody will prolly be signed, and we pray that Pettitte and Clemens sign.

He was born left handed. Therefore, he must pitch against left handers.

His skill (or lack there of) in relation to the hitter's is irellevant.

Apparently, we should only run him out there with a 2 run lead.

Unless the Phil's PBTNL is an A prospect, I don't see this working.

If I had my way, it would look more like this.

A's get : Burke, Wandy, Scott, and another minor leauger

Astros get : Zito, $$$

Talk Zone / Another Tejada Rumor
« on: December 31, 2005, 01:18:29 am »
"Second, the Astros are definitely in talks for Tejada.  Interestingly, their proposal does not involve Brad Lidge.  Their offer consists of a position player and a pitching prospect.  Unfortunately, that's all the info I have on that one.  A little speculation:  Chris Burke, Jason Lane, or Willy Taveras could be the position player in question.  I have to think the pitching prospect would come off their top ten list, and could be Jason Hirsh or Troy Patton."

This from The Link

Hmmm.

The rotation looks to be Carpenter, Mulder, Ponson, Suppan and Marquis.  Who will replace Marquis if he's traded?

I heard Anthony* Reyes as a candidate to move to starter.

Talk Zone / Brad Lidge
« on: December 20, 2005, 03:44:28 pm »
I think it would be a productive move to trade Lidge. Closers get way too much on the market and Purpura should take advantage. There are plenty of instances of relative nobodies stepping into a closer's role (Turnbow, T. Jones, Fuentes, etc), and I think Wheeler or Qualls could fill it with relative success, while improving the club. There has to be at least one team out there that will overpay for Lidge, like Toronto overpayed for Ryan and the Mets overpayed for Billy Wags. Here are some possiblities that could work.

To Baltimore with a package for Tejada. (Unlikely)

To Atlanta for McCann, Joey Devine, and maybe another prospect.

To Texas for Frank Fransico, Kevin Mench, and possibly a prospect (Cordero may be in way)

To Milwauke for either Capuano or Doug Davis
and Dan Kolb

To Philly for Pat Burell and a prospect

To Cleavland with Adam Everett for Johnny Peralta and maybe a prospect.

To Chicago White Sox for Garland

To Chicago Cubs for Angel Guzman and Cory Patterson

out.
