Beer and Queso / Re: Youth baseball bat
« on: October 01, 2018, 10:27:22 am »
Two main things to look for in a bat at that age are composite vs. alloy and end loaded vs. balanced. Composite will give him a bigger barrel/sweet spot, but are more expensive than alloy. Depending on the size of your son and his swing, you may want to start him with a balance weighted bat vs. an end loaded. Big, strong kids handle end loaded bats better, so at 9 most kids swing a balanced bat better (IMO). The end weight can create bad habits at an age when they're trying to develop a good consistent swing. Louisville has a cool weight chart on their bats that shows the balance vs. end load.

AJ only carried 11 pitchers for the 2017 ALDS, so I assume he will do the same this year. That makes the already tough bullpen decisions a little tougher. Here is my guess.

Starters:
JV
Cole
Morton
DK2

Bullpen:
Osuna
Pressley
Rondon
Sipp
Smith
Peacock
McCullers or McHugh?

78
Talk Zone / Re: Wild Card Race
« on: September 29, 2017, 10:29:59 am »

Any thoughts on the reason?   While it is easier to hit a homer to LF, if you don't hit it out you are less likely to get an extra base hit, and with the LF playing closer, less likely to get a hit to LF in general?

Does the shifting that the Astros do have an effect as well?

My WAG is climate conditions like high humidity and the closed roof (lack of "jet stream"). I wonder what the numbers look like roof closed vs. open?

79
While I think JD is the superior color guy, he also had the advantage of working with Bill Brown.  Blum was saddled with horrible Ashby and now solid Kalas.  Vs JD getting to work years with Brown.   JD/Brown's chemistry is part of what made JD so great.

At the end of the day, Im really happy with the TV broadcast, Blum/Todd/Julia are excellent.

Agree with this 100%.

On a separate note, I like the new strategy of scoring 10+ runs and allowing 3 or less. Genius move by AJ.

84
Damn that was awesome.

85
Kalas gets so happy over flyouts.

86
It would be really nice if he weren't on the postseason roster.

I bet we see a lot of Marwin in LF, in the playoffs.

That swing would make Altuve blush.

The irony (yes the real kind of irony) of Sears' demise is that they became what they were through the mail order model.  At one time you could get anything through sears...clothes, appliances...hell you could buy a house from Sears and they'd deliver it to your...well...maybe not your door.  But no matter what it was, if you wanted it, you just ordered it from Sears.  They let Amazon kick their ass via internet sales, putting their eggs into the brick and mortar basket.

Like many, Sears didn't have the foresight or capability to transition from print catalog to digital/ecommerce.

Talk Zone / Re: McCullers
« on: September 18, 2017, 10:16:22 am »
Don't know where I read it, but it was implied that his scheduled use tomorrow is out of the pen.  It sounded like it wasn't just a 'limit his innings' type thing but a 'we're transitioning you to the pen' type thing.  If so, it appears that Hinch is somewhat displeased with him and given up the idea that he would be a starter in the postseason.

I've always thought McCullers was destined for the pen. With his lack of a consistent third pitch, inability to go deep into games and strikeout stuff, the bullpen seems like a good fit. I guess it really doesn't matter if he doesn't get his ass back to pitching.

108
He's a strikeout factory.

I really hate to be that guy, but I would like to see a higher contact hitter like Kemp (or even someone like Aoki. Doh).

109
Fisher takes so fucking many pitches right down the middle. Shit.

110
It's tough when a ball down the middle is hit 500 feet too

Excellent point.

111
Tough when a fastball down the middle is called a ball.

112
how does Marwin not even put the ball in play there?!

He saw three pretty filthy breaking balls. Expanded his zone on the fastball off the plate though.

113
I still say we would be better off with Kemp in left. I think he would hit just as good if not better than Fisher, and he would play better defense out there than what I've seen from Fisher. I'm not giving up on Fisher, I just don't think he is ready just yet and I think Kemp is a better option. Obviously the FO doesn't agree though.

What happened?  All I got on gamecast was Altuve lines out to CF.

Fisher break for home early?

He didn't initially go back to 3b on Altuve's flyball. The in a haste to get back to tag, he stepped on middle of the bag and slipped, therefore was unable to score.

Setup man, good stats, LHP, unorthodox delivery

are there better ones on a seller team?

Selfishly, I would like to see the Astros get a buddy of mine,  Donnie Hart, from the Orioles. He is 26 and only in his second year in the Majors. Lefty, three quarter arm slot, which makes him effective against lefties, but he also gets righties out, too. He is from Katy and would love to pitch for the Astros and  would come pretty cheap I would think. Career 1.90 ERA, 51 career outings.

163
Great at bat by Beltran.

164
B3:

Reddick...hitting .500 leading off an inning...full count...doubles to LF
Altuve flailing wildly at pitches 9 feet out of the zone...quickly 0-2...flails wildly at a pitch 12-feet outside for a three pitch punchout
Correa grounds out 6-3, Reddick to 3B
Beltran flies out F7

Leadoff double wasted because Altuve sucks!!!

4-2 Angels

So much for the vaunted offense.

165
Your reaction is a tab bit knee jerk. I said that (with Keuchel on the DL) we have four question marks in the rotation right now, which is unusual for a team with a good record. Thus, I'm agreeing that Peacock is shaky so far tonight. Let's hope he reverts back to his first two start form.

Also took part in the MMP pre-draft workout today.

Ranked at #129 on the BA 500 list. Inconsistent bat with some power. The lefty swinger is an Arkansas commit.

I got to see Cole live a few times this season. He is short in stature, but well built like a young Bagwell. Plus arm, good speed and insane bat speed, but struggled with consistency this season in a fairly weak district. His younger brother, Blake, is really good, too. He is class of 2019 and already in the low 90's on the mound. Cole also has an older brother, Dillion, that pitches for UCF.

Wong started his career at UH playing SS as a freshman, also played the OF.  He then moved to catcher. Excellent athlete.

My ex-wife sat next to a scout at the UH/A&M game. He was there primarily to see Wong and said he would be drafted as a catcher, but likely not stay there.

171
Thanks. Just got through reading this on chron.com. Not sure how I missed it earlier.

172
Any word on Marwin? Speculation from Blum/Kala is that he left the game last night with a potential hand issue from a slide at 3b. I haven't seen anything reported from the team.

173

Not so fast, my friend.

Morton to the DL with a strained lat. Jankowski recalled. Fiers presumably back to the rotation.

Fuck!!!

177
And John Jaso, the dreadlocked one, wins it for the Pirates with a walk off single in the 10th.  Poor Pill takes the loss in his debut.

That's a tough one to swallow.

178
I hadn't tuned in at that point. But when Preston Wilson said "Infielders aren't used to having their back to the infield." I was done.

Uh, almost any popup to shallow center both the SS and the 2nd baseman are running with their backs to the infield. What are you talking about, you goon?

I liked when he said runners shouldn't freeze on a line drive, they should go back to the base on a line drive. But coach Preston, what if it goes throu..ah fuck it.

179
Watching him take BP yesterday was pretty crazy, he was going train tracks in left center quite a bit. Took quite a few to the top of the fake ivy too.

I was at the game last night, too. Machado may be the most impressive player I have seen in person. The ball screams off his bat.

180
Preston Wilson sucked as an Astro and he's even worse at whatever he calls whatever the fuck it is he thinks he's doing right now.

181

Yes.

Not a great personality , but good analysis. IMO.

189
Strikes Correa out on all heat and then gets Marwin on all junk.

190
MR, that's some quality play by play

He is no doubt typing away right now. Likely some choice words for Correa and Altuve's at bats.

191
Strike three may have been a good pitch, but strike two was right down the fucking middle.

192
Bottom 7
Marwin leads it off and leads the team in home runs, which should embarrass about 10 people in the lineup.  Marwin drag bunts one right up the line, Miggy playing back and can't make a play, easy single to lead it off. I love it! That's some salty veteran shit.
Yuli squares to bunt and misses a fastball, strike 1, hits a fading liner to right that drops in for a single, runners on 1st and 2nd, no outs. Marwin had no chance to move to 2nd because he had to wait a second to make sure it was going to fall.
Bregman up, PLEASE be bunting. Because this is double play/Astros baseball city. Not squaring, takes a fat fastball for strike one. Will Harris tuning it up in the bully. Ball 1. Tigers have two guys up in the pen, a lefty and a righty. Breggers fouls one straight back, 1-2. Setting himself up perfectly for the rollover double play. 50 footer, bounces around the grass in front of the plate, 2-2. Fucking terrible check swing on a pitch a foot outside, Bregman out without an appeal. What a shit at bat. 1 out.
Springer up with runners on 1st and 2nd, 1 out. Strike one on the outside corner. Astros have EIGHT fucking hits in 6 1/3 innings and one run. That is putrid. Ball 1, outside. Fouled straight back, Springer got a meatball and couldn't put it in play (AGAIN), 1-2. Fullmer at 102 pitches. WAY outside, ball 2. Springer a mile behind an outside fastball, punch out. Fucking shitty. 2 outs. I hate listening to the nonsense excuses the TV guys make for bad at bats.
Reddick takes ball one low. Smacks on to right, but 20 feet foul. He just missed it, 1-1. Woos raining down, ball outside, 2-1. Fouls off ball 3, 2-2. Flares one to shallow left, Machado easily makes the catch. Fucking dogshit at bats from Bregman and Springer doom the Good Guys to another shit inning with runners on.

End 7, 1-0 Astros.

Excellent recap of the inning. Bregman not bunting pissed me off.

193

200
My guess is there's a girl involved.

Maybe the love child of Crowe and a troll doll.

201
Yuli resembles Russell Crowe.

202
Missed it--why was Straily taken out?

108 velo that's why.

203
All of this talk about James Comey getting fired is making me want a chili dog.

204
He did make pitches.  He got six fucking outs that inning.  How many do you think he ought to have to make each inning?

True. Was thinking specifically of the Dansby at bat. Shouldn't have been there though.

205
Devo gets it done once again.

206
And just like that, Morton is out and Devo in.

Morton should be kicking Carlos Correa in the nuts.

Yep. Should have been out of there in three hitters. Still got to make the pitches after that.

207
And now another tailor-made, inning-ending double play ball turns into an RBI-single due to the shift.

Shift and Correa's slow feet.

208
Two plays that should have been made there.

IIRC it was Gomez misplaying a can of corn at Fenway last spring.  Also, I'm pretty sure he was talking to himself.  Does that count as throwing your teammate under the bus?

It was in Minneapolis, Gomez let a easy flyball drop right in front of him. He was released the next day.

210
Exactly.  It's one thing to drill a guy in the butt to send a message.  Throwing behind a guy up is dangerous.  I understand Napoli's point, and frankly he had every right to make that a bigger deal than he did.  He was remarkably restrained.

Just to add to this, throwing behind a hitter leaves no doubt and is obviously intentional, whereas getting drilled in the ribs can still be interpreted as an inside 2-seam fastball that "got away." Also, everyone looked pretty calm initially and Shoo escalated it with his actions. Bannister is a hot head douchebag. Blum didn't hold back in his criticism of Bannister running out with his chest puffed out.

Expanded today into the Top 100 Draft Prospects list. Among previously-mentioned players in this thread, Pavin Smith is ranked at #8, Shane Baz at #12, Adam Haseley at #14, Seth Romero at #20 and Clarke Schmidt (w/his TJS scheduled for next Wed.) at #48.

Among others: A&M righty Corbin Martin slipped to #32, Horned Frog backstop Evan Skoug fell to #86 and Longhorn righty Morgan Cooper comes in at #92. Another couple of college righties, UCLA's Griffin Canning and LSU's Alex Lange, rank 17th and 19th respectively.

Another local product that's not on this list, but on other projected draft lists is Fort Bend Travis OF Cole Turney.

I took my son to see Rogue One this evening and I thought it was fantastic. I do have a couple of questions for the board as some of you have firmer grip on the storyline than myself.

1. What is the timeline from the start of Star Wars through The Return of the Jedi? Are we talking weeks, months, years?
2. The only part of Rogue One that confused me is what is Jimy Smits going to Endor to do and how does that tie into Star Wars, etc.?

Seriously...he's not hitting spots, and there could be lots of reasons for that.

Right...like something mechanical, which is what I was pointing out. He has been struggling since April, I would think if he was dealing with an injury, it would have surfaced by now.

I'm not saying you are wrong, cause I don't know, and while I agree that Keuchel operates on a margin, I'm not sold that it is just a command issue.  My observation is that he used to throw his sinker early in counts and get a lot of ground outs or get ahead in the count.  Now, he is not getting those ground outs as the sinker is getting squared more frequently.  This has led to him trying to finesse the zone and rely on his change and breaking ball.  This has also upped his pitch counts and led him to look more like a junk baller than a guy who works off his sinker.  In sum, I wonder if it is just that his sinker is no longer effective and not that he has lost pinpoint command.

His sinker is flat which is mostly what's getting hammered. Probably due to something mechanical, i.e. arm slot/separation timing/etc.

Mark--If you had to save one umpire in order to save your life, which one would you save?

Something, something...let God sort'em out.

341
90% of the coaches in "select", "premier", "travel" what have you, are idiots, and 90% of the players aren't good enough to make the high school team, let alone anything "advanced".

Absolutely, but there are zero kids making the team that didn't play "select." And I used the term "advanced" because that is where the talent plays. If you play LL or Pony passed the age of 7/8, you are playing against kids that don't know which hand their glove goes on. There are obvious exceptions to this as leagues like Lamar and Pearland still field competitive leagues, but 100% of those kids play "select" when league play is over. These are just the times we live in, if you hold out on your morals, then your son will not play in high school.

Just got here. Why is Marwin in LF?

Rasmussen called the ump a cocksucker.

343
Year round travel baseball ruins arms as well as neighborhood leagues. It is a sickness.

A lot of mis-informed broad brush strokes being painted here, but this point is spot on. This will be the first Fall my son is on a roster and only now because he has gold glove tryouts in May and starts high school next August, and I made it clear to the coach I don't want him pitching until at least late October. Usually, we put the glove down altogether for the Fall, but the next 18 months are critical for him making the HS team, so we will do hitting, conditioning and fielding drills in early Fall and play a few tourneys in late Fall.

My son has played "travel ball" (whatever the fuck that is) since he was 8 and I coached his teams from 4 till 12, this past season at 13 was my first in the stands. Most parents want the best for their child and they believe paying for coaches, uniforms, lessons, travel, etc, is the way to get Johnny the best. It's also a stature thing for some parents, especially at the younger levels, and as they get older it morphs into getting them ready for HS tryouts. With most high schools in populated areas in the South, the numbers of kids trying out is huge (50-90 at most Katy schools) and all of them have played some advanced level of baseball. So, this notion that little Johnny can roll out of the cornfield and make his HS team is at best mis-informed or simply just ignorant. The talent that seperates most of those 50-90 are razor thin, so things like fundamentals, technique, even swagger (whatever the fuck that is) factor into the HS coach's decision. Just like everything, there are parents/coaches that take all of this to the extreme, but those are the ones you read about and mostly are the exception.

Also, I know this is a baseball forum so hence it dominates the discussion, but youth baseball is mild when it comes to extremity as the norm compared to other youth sports like cheer, gymnastics, volleyball and tennis.

352
Again, you have Springer in RF, Gomez in CF and mostly Rasmus and Tucker in LF.  Marisnick is a spot starter and late-inning defensive guy/pinch runner.  You can routinely work in 4 of the 5, but Marisnick is the odd man out.

Bingo!

353
Whoever fell asleep missed some excitement.

Stupid West coast games!

Glad to see the good guys pulled off an ugly win to stop the skid. Gregorson has done a good job most of the season, but damn I like Will Harris. I wouldn't mind seeing him get more save opportunities.

354
Marisnick should be in CF. I do not like Carlos Gomez. I don't like his attitude, I don't like the way he plays.

Attitude or not, Marisnick is the better CF. I have not been overly impressed with Gomez' defense. At least not yet.

355
I don't get the Marisnick in LF and Rasmus in RF? Seems like they should be flip flopped.

Hinch has probably been thinking about this lineup for weeks and he couldn't wait to play with his new toy. Plus Valbuena hit the ball well last night, as well.

Options are limited on this club for the 3-hole. The only other guy I can come up with is Lowrie unless they put Grossman in the lineup and move Altuve and Springer down.

At minimum there needs to be space between Carter and Gattis.

From friends and families and communities represented, I understand. Just don't understand why anyone would drive a half hour to see other peoples' kids play. And not even getting into what I see wrong with "showcasing" 5th graders. But whatever floats your boat.

ESPN and ABC televise the games for a broader audience than just friends and families. It's a two minute drive, it's baseball, it's a town with not much to do. I was just trying to be friendly and offer suggestions based on my recent visit. It's 6th and 7th graders and it's not "showcasing."

I was just there in June and lodging is definitely limited. Aside from the ceremonies, there is a 12 year old baseball tournament* just a few miles south of Cooperstown with 104 teams. There will be parents in every hotel, cabin and room to rent within miles. One tip regarding lodging is check the town of Oneota. It's about 20-25 minutes southwest of Cooperstown. We had a few parents stay there that waited until the last minute to book something. Logistically, it was cheaper for us to fly to LaGuardia and rent a bus to Cooperstown (3 hour drive) vs. the alternatives of Albany and Syracuse where we still would have had to rent a bus and drive a few hours. I am more than happy to answer questions about the area for those that are going, just message me or ask on this thread.

*For those that make it to the ceremony, if you have any down time, make your way out to Dreams Park just a few miles south of town where the annual 12U baseball tourney is held. It's a display of some of the best 12 year old baseball in the country. In the 2014 draft, 14 of the players taken in the first round of the MLB draft played in this tourney when they were 12.

Anyone else have Comcast Sports? You think Eric Young was the only applicant for his job?

it was ridiculous to leave him in this long.

A Lo point of the season for Porter.

He was sent by Trembley. Great tag by Beltre and even better relay by Kinsler.

Thank you, Ebby. Amazing writing.

lost 4-3 my iPhone just told me

Yep. Lead off single in the 8th that fails to score. Not much of a threat in the 9th.

485
Jake ElAmor hits into a 6-3.
Villar K's swinging.

Going to the Top of the 8th. A's lead 4-3.

486
Dominguez forgets the A's play with a Leftfielder and smokes a ball right at him. One down and a pitching change.

487
My fault. I turned on the game about 10 seconds before he hit it. I'm sorry.

Your selflishness is killing this team.

488
I didn't even have time to ask Matt his opinion on Blackley.

489
Carter with a rather shitty effort on that double by Sogard. Took him forever to get the ball and get it in.

Fucking pitiful.

490
Bud didn't get the memo to keep the ball out of the OF. Bud gives up a walk then an oppo double that Carter two-steps with while the runner scores from 1st.

Just popping my head in to take credit for the Matt Dominguez home run.

It's time to start using your powers on the bully.

I see that the Astros are now behind 2-1, and I see that the run scored from 3rd on a double-play that ended the inning. Was the back end of the DP a rundown or something?

Yep. Heads-up base running by the A's.

I think the Mariners saw something in Fields' delivery because it appeared that they were not swinging at his curveball out of his hand. Whether Fields was tipping his curve ball or the Mariners were just sitting dead red, he was not very effective, again. I've about had enough of these gadamn Mariner fuckers and their shrewed ways.

And now Luke Scott goes yard, and all of a sudden, it's a 3-2 game. Hanging slider. Shitfick

Hanging slider, asshole, right-wing extremist, hayseed, etc....he can still tattoo a baseball.
