Waldo thanks so much for the pre and post views of the games. Looking at the VOID with a clear and happy heart. So glad that there is only one more day of baseball remaining and the Astros are in the game with a chance to win it all. This is as good as it gets. Appreciate all you and others do to make this a great place to be an Astros addict.

I concur with all of this. Thanks for the work , Waldo.

The VOID will be upon us soon, but there is one last game to be played and my team is in it. If you had asked any fan if they would take that at the beginning of the season, only the fools would have turned it down.

Of course it is. Mine is because we did not support Verlander, and they have Kershaw looming. That does not mean I have given up or think we will lose. We must break on top early and score some runs. McCullers must be on. Their pitching is in better shape than ours.

Hoping for vaunting. Lots and lots of vaunting.

Check your calendar.  Agree with you on savoring this.

My bad.  I feel like Bush 41 after making his "September 7th will live in infamy" remarks.

My sports consciousness occurred when I was 7 years old, 74-75.  The Astros were my first, best and only enduring pro sports love.  I've stuck with them when I couldn't watch them.  No matter how good or bad the team was, they were my team.  This is the greatest year of Astros fandom.  It kills me that the BBG's appear to want me to see only bits of the games, but it seems to work.  They've typically played better when I haven't watched.  But last night was the first time I didn't see a single pitch.  I think I will check in briefly and out mostly tonight.  Also I don't think my heart can take watching the entire game on the tv.

I know I was this way in 2005.  I tried to be this way again but the results are not tracking.  So, I'm going to watch every single pitch of tonight's game and savor it.  My team is playing a meaningful game in September.  That has never happened before in my life.  Win or lose, this team has been amazing and this city will welcome them home with open arms with or without a World Series trophy.

Few time poster, long time lurker...

I've been watching as many of you have commented, joked, and sparred over this franchise since I discovered the old AstrosConnection back in 1999.  I've enjoyed your joyous exclamations when this team has done great things.

Things like clinching on the last game of 99, the six-pitcher no-hitter in NYC, the Chris Burke HR, the NLCS win in 05, the rise of the baby 'Stros in 15, and this year's crazy World Series run.

I've also experienced your pain when things haven't gone so well, such as Walt-f**&%$#-Weiss,  Carlos Hernandez tearing his rotator cuff, Anaheim Jimmy in the 04 NLCS Game 6,  the sweep in the 05 WS, the many losses from 2008-14, and the Correa error, and getting Rangered last year.

When other folks gave up on this team in the Process years, it was nice to turn to this board and see some excellent discussion about the bright future.  Now that the Astros are on the cusp of greatness, I wanted you all to know that it's been more fun because of what you all bring to the discussion.

Thanks to you all. I hope to be celebrating with you soon!

This.  So much this.

We should not assume anything merely because Verlander is pitching. He was headed for a loss in Game 2 until vaunting made its appearance. He has had regular rest plus so I am hoping for Vintage JV, but I remember how Dodger Fan thought Game Five was in the bag because of Kershaw. Whatever your superstitions are, adhere to them.
Be humble and respectful and , BBGs willing, we can win.

Talk Zone / Furcal to Braves?
« on: December 16, 2008, 07:53:03 am »
Per Ken Rosenthal

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8947764/Source:-Furcal-to-sign-with-Braves

One would think that Yunel Escobar is now prime Jake Peavy trade bait, provided the ATL and Pads can get together on the minor leaguers.

Per Ken Rosenthal at Fox Sports

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8927566/Pads-GM:-Cubs%27-pursuit-of-Peavy-is-over

"1:00 p.m. — Cubs out of Peavy chase

The Cubs' pursuit of Jake Peavy is over.

Padres general manager Kevin Towers said he was told by Cubs general manager Jim Hendry on Thursday that the Cubs were ending their quest for a Peavy blockbuster.

The teams had spoken for weeks about a potential trade, expanding their discussions to three- and four-team deals in an attempt to satisfy the Padres.

But the Cubs ultimately determined that they did not want to pay the price for Peavy — five or six players, plus the remaining $63 million on the final four years of Peavy's contract."

I think I'm going to Jarro Cafe this evening.

My folks live a block from that place, but we have never tried it.  I have been a loyal El Gallo customer since the mid 70s.  Is Jarro Cafe worth trying?

Yeah, the free agent starters available during the upcoming offseason are light years more abundant with quality than what teams had to pick from this past offseason. It was smart that they passed on the few lackluster choices. It'll get interesting to see who they go after for next year.

From http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007/12/2009-mlb-free-a.html

Anyone see anything here that looks good?  There is better quality and quantity than this past off-season, but that isn't saying much.  You could pretty much have signed kids off of little league teams and had a better selection than last winter.

Starting pitchers

Jeremy Affeldt (30)
Tony Armas Jr. (31)
Kris Benson (33)
A.J. Burnett (32) - can opt out after '08 season
Paul Byrd (38)
Roger Clemens (46)
Matt Clement (33) - $8.75MM club option for '09 with a $0.25MM buyout
Ryan Dempster (32)
Chad Durbin (31)
Josh Fogg (32)
Jon Garland (29)
Tom Glavine (43)
Mike Hampton (36)
Mark Hendrickson (35)
Livan Hernandez (34)
Orlando Hernandez (43)
Jason Jennings (30)
Randy Johnson (45)
John Lackey (30) - $9MM club option for '09 with a $0.5MM buyout
Jon Lieber (39)
Esteban Loaiza (37) - $7.5MM club option for '09 with a $0.375MM buyout
Braden Looper (34)
Derek Lowe (36)
Greg Maddux (43)
Pedro Martinez (37)
Matt Morris (34) - $9MM club option for '09 with a $1MM buyout
Jamie Moyer (46)

It still saddens me that, in a better world, we would be only complaining about the writers' strike interrupting the fifth season of Firefly

Compared with today's going rate for quality relief pitchers that hit free agency, that's pretty much a steal.  Also adds some measure of stability to the pen along with Valverde.

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the other late 90's what-if thread... but just think about all the ridiculous pitching talent the Astros had in the pipeline... Rodriguez, Henriquez, Hernandez, Miller, Elarton, Redding, Oswalt, etc... Ok, that Oswalt guy turned out pretty good... but... shitfuck. I think I might need to borrow Limey's chest of drawers for a little while...
It just goes to show you how freakishly lucky the 90's Braves were. Speaking of painful, private things... once Satan finally calls in his marker, John Schuerholz will be walking funny for the next decade or two...

Post of the week candidate...

You know, I can't help but think that if he puts together a solid August and September offensively, Lane may be in the starting lineup next April.

Please don't speak of this. It makes me throw up in my mouth a little.

I am not saying he would have crushed the ball, but it just seemed odd to me that Garner would throw Scott out there to face Wags.  Percentages alone say that a righty batter would have a slightly better chance than Scott.

Talk Zone / Re: Elementary Question about Boras Clients
« on: July 22, 2006, 06:18:49 pm »

I don't think I have ever seen a Boras client sign with a team  that didnt also have the highest offer.  The only exception might be Beltran with the Yankees, which Boras is said to have  told their brass that they could have him for $100 million over 6 years.

Talk Zone / Did it seem weird that...
« on: July 22, 2006, 06:15:56 pm »
...Garner seemed to be giving up in the bottom of the 9th today?  He let Wilson ( a K machine), Scott (a lefty), and Ausmus (a generally terrible offensive player) all bat and did not replace any of them with Burke.  It was almost as if his thought was "we're probably going to lose, but if we pull this out and tie it we might have a chance with Burke in later innings".

Considering how this offense has been sputtering, wouldn't it be wiser to at least go all in in the bottom of the 9th?

I remember when Hideo Nomo was taking the NL by storm in 1995.  I went to his first ever game in the Dome and there were 40,000+ in the stands when the average crowd that year was somewhere around 14,000 per game (post strike).  No team in the NL had been able to figure out Nomo and his herky jerky delivery.  Biggio drew a walk, stole 2nd and 3rd on Piazza and then scored on a wild pitch.  The Bagwell Moment I most remember was when he absolutely tattooed one of those splitters straight down the left field line and well up into the orange seats. All of the sudden, the crowd realized that the attraction that night would not be Nomo, but Jeffery Robert Bagwell.

Best.  First Baseman.  Ever.
