Could not be a more beautiful night for Baseball - my 7 y.o. and I are here, hoping it's as entertaining (or at least satisfying) as the last Astros' WS G5.

Charles? That's not the one that always tries to hotfoot it out of there, is it? You'd want to take one of the more controllable ones if it's the World Series is what I would have thought.
My second son, Max - he's the real baseball fan.

I think the worst in this group is Porter, who has been known to have a bit of a short temper, but compared to the usual suspects, he's amazing.

Worth noting that it looks like there hasn't been an ejection in a WS game in 23 years

Late posting after a great but brutal day with the boys. We had a 3.5 hour drive back to NYC after the game (and all the boys had summer camp the next morning), so we left our mercifully shaded seats under the club level and watched the top of the 9th from the awesome SRO area in right field. Was great watching that half-inning there, even though we had no idea what happened on Brantley's "inside-the-parker" directly under us.

After that, we headed out (figuring it was either a win or we didn't want to see it, which was accurate). I hope the young Orioles fan, who was crying and couldn't watch the T9 runs score, stayed for the finish (I told him about the Astros wandering in the wilderness, and that they stole our whole front office).

Agree the Camden may be the best park I've been to (as bad as it sounds, with 4 boys between 2-8, the birds nest playground with TVs was great for middle innings). That said, whatever the Giants are calling their stadium is still hard to beat.

Jim keeps saying that he's not sure that Cole *will* go. I'm hoping his optimism stems from some inside info.

I think just hope - I hope like hell he resigns too, but think they will trade for someone with club control and let him walk. He will command a ridiculous contract (and rightly so).

Generally in markets where the employees are the product / differentiating factor and not fungible commodities, they get paid a serious percentage of the overall profitability of the enterprise. There is a "joke" that investment banks are socialist paradises run for the benefits of the workers, because more of the overall earnings of the firms go to pay than go to shareholders (don't pay up, it's easy to jump to someone who will).

We did a trip with the boys Thanksgiving before last - a lot has already been suggested (British Museum, Tower of London, London Eye, Westminster Abbey, West End show), a couple things I'd add:

Both Borough Market and Spitalfield Market were very cools stop for lunch - tons of food stall options

I thought Globe Theater tour was worth doing - would be very cool to see a show there

Probably less relevant sans kids, but the Harry Potter experience is very well done - have preserved all the original sets, etc.

Bags going off on exit velocity was great.  "I don't care, it's over the fence", on Springer's HR.  Then Bregman chops one for a single to 2B..."What was the exit velocity on that knock?"
The best part was that Bregman's chopper had a higher velo than Springer's shot

Apologies (I may have been drinking at the airport). My point is, the table you are using doesn't include the spread for Vegas. Look up the Sox odds at +125, and you'll see it doesn't add up unless you normalize both to 135. That's why more like 55%

In a move that’s unprecedented, Trump has been interviewing personally the replacement AGs (he fired them all a while ago) for the districts that cover Trump Tower, the Kushners and Mar-a-Lago; i.e. the venues for any criminal actions that could be brought against the inner family circle.  Presumably any Trump-approved replacement would not pursue state-level charges against the Trump Crime Family.

There are plenty of people on here who would know better than me, but I don't think this is right. He's looking at replacement federal AG's, the state level charges would be brought by the state AGs (like Schneiderman in NY) who aren't appointed by Trump (elected in NY at least).

Correa is a fine player, as is Springer.  Bregman turning out as strong as Correa and Springer.  Altuve is playing an entirely different game.
Correa was having as good a season as Altuve until he got hurt. Still underrated.

It's just longevity at this point (and whether Correa surpasses him)

Talk Zone / Re: Playoff batting order
« on: September 26, 2017, 09:48:27 pm »
You make great points.    Yuli's batting order splits are hard to imagine.   Hinch bats him 8th because that's by far his best position statistically.  If fact, he has an .809 OPS on the season, and his OPS is below .809 when he bats 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th.    So his bats 8th OPS (1.121 in 80 PA) is so high, it brings the average above the lowest 5 values in a 6 value** average.

So then your question becomes ... do you want 5 at bats at .770 OPS or 4 at bats at 1.121 OPS?   I tend to lean towards the 5 ABs for Gurriel, due to the whole "past performance is not a guarantee of future results", and that his splits will regress to the mean.

**ignores the 1 game he hit 9th

Is this post satirical?

You mean the one where Martinez wasn't getting it done in spring training, but the Astros needed a left fielder who could hit too, but Martinez was out of options so he couldn't be sent down until he figured it out or washed out, so they let him go and he went entirely through waivers without getting claimed and he signed with the Tigers and they sent him to the minors where he finally figured it out then recalled him and the rest is history?

I'm pretty sure it's not the accurate version of the story if it doesn't derisively refer to Luhnow as "GC".

Little better batting average (.235 vs. .218), very slightly better OBP (.333 vs. .325), little worse slugging (.351 vs .375). Pretty much a wash this year - Cameron Maybin had a pretty good year last year, but a bit of an outlier.

I have zero legs to stand on at this site. But I simply dislike piling on players like Sipp. He came out of nowhere and helped the fuck out of this team in a down season and in the playoffs. There's a human element that comments like these ignores and I don't like reading it. It's cheap and unnecessary. The context of Sipps career is worth more than a few jokes before his dream possibly comes to an end. He's never shown a lack of effort or a lack of desire. If a stint on the dl and a "rehab start" are all the Astros have left to offer him, I hope he rises the fuck up again. If he doesn't, thank you Mr. Sipp.

That blows. Curious, why would your tickets not be valid?
They are doing it as a single entry double header with the night game, so only tomorrow's tickets valid. Tomorrow night is the Derek Jeter fellatio fest, so it's totally sold out (and StubHub is going for 6x what it was for last night's game). I can trade my tickets for today in for some other Yankee's game I don't give a shit about (pending availability).

I took my son to see Rogue One this evening and I thought it was fantastic. I do have a couple of questions for the board as some of you have firmer grip on the storyline than myself.

1. What is the timeline from the start of Star Wars through The Return of the Jedi? Are we talking weeks, months, years?
2. The only part of Rogue One that confused me is what is Jimy Smits going to Endor to do and how does that tie into Star Wars, etc.?

Jimmy Smits is going to Alderaan to report to the Senate what the Emperor is up to. Also, he's going to get blown the fuck up.

Timingwise - should be a few weeks from the end of zrogue One to the first destruction of the Death Star. End of Return of the Jedi is about 4 years later.

He actually did pretty well turning around Tennessee, which is what led USC to hire him away.  And he was 28-15 at USC.  Not stellar, but not really a "stinky turd" either, especially considering the sanctions he was dealing with from Carroll.

He got fired on the tarmac and wasn't allowed on the team bus. Regardless of how you spin it, every head coaching job he's ever had has ended in abject disaster between him and the employer. Now he's hot shit because Alabama is good - nevermind every other assistant hired on that basis has been garbage as a head coach (Muschamp,  Smart, McElwain). GFL.

From what I hear indirectly from inside sources, this did not go down as advertised.  I think Charlie should have done better at game management (and thus W-L record), but I also think he got shafted on this and should have been given a 4th year.  It also looks to me like Herman's real skills lie in manipulative negotiating tactics.  On the field as a coach, it looks to me like he is a risk-taker that results in some unexpected wins and some unexpected losses.  We'll see how that goes down in a couple of years.

I'm afraid the bitching will continue, because the attributes that would make announcers popular around here - baseball knowledge, brevity, focus on the game, Astros-centric in a non-company-line way - are probably not the attributes the Astros will be seeking.  I suspect Reid will find a couple of guys well-versed in pop culture who will be loved by millenials.

I'm not sure what to think about Blum.  I thought he was very good when working with Brown, but I got the impression he enjoyed it a lot more when he could wander off into goofy-land with Ashby.  I suppose the fact that Geoff wasn't jettisoned with Ashby is a good sign if he wants to stay.

Some sloppy reporting either way seems to me.

Not everyone can be Nate Colbert. Say, are you a librarian by any chance?

Yes...pitches that bounce in front of the plate are wild pitches.

That's what I said.

Jesus, Gattis forgot how to catch suddenly this inning.

That's not his fault Mark, they are wild pitches.

I get confused how the rules work, but wouldn't they have more flexibility if they left him on the DL?

From what I've read, he lacks some intensity in his defense.

He let a ball drop right beside the Crawford Boxes because he didn't realize it wouldn't be out there. Hadn't seen that one before.

You could not be more right and wrong at the same time.

Obviously I was speaking from the perspective of keeping you away from civilized society. I haven't been to Sumatra, but assume there may be some small differences relative to Midland.

I think we figured out this team is not dependent on HH's travel schedule... It seemed to be at first but then he was around for the Toronto and St. Louis games... I think (I promise I'm not a stalker - just have a weird memory)

In that case, I think its definitely best for everyone that he stays in Sumatra (although I'm not sure midland is that different).

I figured that too, though you realize I'm in Sumatra right now, correct?

Ok, stay there.

I haven't done a detailed correlation, but they seem to play better when you're stateside HH. Maybe cool your jets for a while.

How about everytime he has the best year as a shortstop in club history at age 21, we'll point that out. It's only been 50 years.
