I'm annoyed when people tap their brakes for no reason. Also when they wont pass or move over. That annoys the hell out of me. Or two cars driving side by side 5 miles below the speed limit on a two lane interstate with a parade of cars behind them that only want to drive the speed limit. Fuck them! Those people are total assholes.

Indeed!!! A pox on their houses!!!

What really annoys you is that LSU is undefeated and ranked No. 1 in some polls, while your Longhorns are bowl eligible.

Let me clear about Tom Herman. He proved that I know nothing about picking coaches. I wanted him in Baton Rouge, but I'm so tickled that I was wrong. Herman played the two schools against each other. I want Texas to return to prominence because I think that college football is better when Texas is strong (I maintain the same things about Michigan and USC).

I think that Texas is better than 6-5. Texas played LSU tough. I wrote after that game being highly complimentary of your QB, who I think is an exciting player. Will Herman be successful? Time will tell. However, let's just say that he's off to a bumpy start in a place with little patience (except for Mack Brown, who you should have fired at least three years prior to when you did) for mediocre results. Query how this impacts recruiting. I guarantee you that it will have some adverse effect on recruiting.

I am elated and highly surprised by Orgeron's success. I mean he was 10-25 at Ole Miss (where it's impossible to win except for if you're cheating or Johnny Vaught is the coach). He's running things like a CEO and hiring (and paying) some of the brightest minds in college football. It will be interesting to see if we can retain Joe Brady. If I have to choose which to retain, either Brady or Aranda, I'm keeping Brady. LSU is winning despite a swiss cheese defense.

Or make the ballot out of wood, to resemble the wooden statue that Jeter was for the last six to eight years of his career.

LSU almost stomped their collective dick last night.  But they just grazed it.

The operative word is almost. I thought that we outplayed them and outcoached them and should have beaten them by two touchdowns. We certainly would have had the game been in Tiger Stadium, but we were in the bowels of Bryant-Denny.

Well, I am grateful that we finally got the Bama losing streak to end. The end was more exciting than I wanted. I give major props to Tua, who played his hurt ass off. I don't know how wise it was to have played him so soon after surgery and what it could mean in future games, but I suspect that Saban knew that he had no shot with Tua.

Of course they did, but being lucky in being born well does not mean they lack talent or ability. Thinking otherwise without personal knowledge is an insult.

Exactly. Reid Ryan certainly benefitted from having a famous dad. However, as I understand it, he was the driving force behind the Hooks success and has done what appears to be a great job for the Astros. Jim Crane won't suffer fools for long, so if his son doesn't work out, I bet that he won't hesitate to take nexcessary steps to solve the problem.

Far, far worse. Unlucky is a fact. “Wanted it more” sounds like HS football. Completely silly applied to professional baseball players in the World Series.

This whole wanted it more really pisses me off. These are PROFESSIONAL athletes. Their goal is to win a championship. Have you ever seen how much work it takes to perform at that level? If you ever do, you'll change your tune quickly. They all badly want it. Preiod.

It has to be the SF Giants.  3 WS wins.

I lived out there for the first two. Bochy was the best manager in baseball for a long time and it wasn't even close. And Bryan Sabean was a masterful assembler of talent. But it was Bochy, because, if you remember those teams, they weren't world-beaters like the Astros were this year. They were a marginally good team that peaked at the right time. Bochy was masterful.

I've found myself saying this a lot recently, both to myself and to others, I'm pretty sure I've even said it on this site a time or two. It definitely fits here.

Just because something doesn't work, doesn't mean it was the wrong decision. Just because something works, doesn't make it the right decision.

Bringing in Harris when he did, was the right decision. 9/10 times, Harris gets the job done, and the Astros probably win the game, this was the 1. Anybody who says that bringing in Harris in the 7th was a bad decision, simply has no baseball intelligence.

Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

Absofuckinglutely correct on all scores. Will Harris has been nails all year. I feel awful for my LSU Tiger brother. He deserved a better fate, as Coach noted, getting beat on an awesome pitch (perfect call and perfect execution), that's just cruel and unusual punishment.

Wellsir, I for one am grateful to the ownership and organization  for the wonderful baseball and entertainment that they provided this year. I'm even grateful that we came within a game of taking it all. I am grateful because I remember those seasons of not so long ago. The 111 loss season and losing the last 15 in a row that year sticks out in my mind. While we came up short, we did god damn good, and even though we have some questions, Astros baseball looks in great hands, and for that too I am grateful.

There's some smart people on this board; I'm surprised few see the obvious.  The post-game actions and comments by Cole seemed out of character because they were/are.  What you witnessed last night was the spirit of Scott Boras in Cole's body.  Cole was carefully coached by Boras -- the comments, hat, etc. -- all part of the act.  It was a message to the marketplace that Team Cole isn't fucking around.

This is spot on. Borass strikes again. Fools like Arte Moreno will overpay for Cole. He'll get what he wants.

Talk Zone / Re: Tipping pitches
« on: October 31, 2019, 01:50:29 pm »
Verducci on how Strasburg was tipping his pitches in the first two innings last night, but the Nationals caught and fixed it:

“Stephen, you’re doing it again.”

Menhart didn’t have to show video to Strasburg. The pitcher knew instantly what he was doing to telegraph his pitches. The pitching coach and his pitcher came up with a fix. Strasburg would reach into his glove for his grip, then briefly start flapping his glove at the waist before raising his hands at the set position.

The game flipped right there.

“He told me it was—what is the right word here—just so re-assuring to him,” Menhart said. “It gave him such relief and confidence. He said, ‘I got takes on balls they were hitting before, and they were swinging and missing at balls they were spitting on in the first inning.’ It freed him up.”

Strasburg gave up two runs in the first inning and none thereafter. The Astros went 3-for-22 after Strasburg stopped tipping his pitches. They didn’t know what hit them.

This is a load of crap. It really pisses me off when the dumbass fails to mention that Strasburg happens to be a very good pitcher. It's often said that if you ever get to a star starter, you better get to him early. The Astros got a little, but not enough. The 3-22 was pure Strasburg.

Not sure for Boone - but for AJ, I think declaring that JV is pitching on Friday puts an enormous amount of pressure on the Yankees tonight.  Maybe it causes their hitters to press or Boone to over-manage.

Long time lurker...over a dozen years but hey, I'll give my first take and try not to be called a neck.

Hinch is consistent in his approach...and players love that about him, they know what to expect. He always gives guys scheduled days off whether they were hot or not or whether they liked it or not.  He uses analytics for shifts and sticks with it despite some player's objections (cough, Dallas, cough) and he doesn't put up with disrespect (see ya Giles).

He also never intentionally walked a batter. From a macro level that's what this pitching decision is...essentially we're not going to intentionally walk a game with our bullpen. We're going to go right after you and if you beat us, you tip your cap and move on to the next game.

Damn, son. You came out throwing gas. Greqt post. Let's hear more from you!!!

Great - but why?  Do you say that because you believe you shouldn't ever change the lineup in a series?  Because it conveys a lack of confidence in the demoted?  Because you think that the left/right balance is more important?  Do you think that Carlos isn't ready to be moved up yet?

Have you considered the signal that demotion in the order sends to a young Yordan Alvarez?

When asked he said he knew there was speculation,  but credit should be given to the guys who hit line drives.

Enjoyed that story,  Jim.

Cash is a good guy and an innovative manager. And a good one at that. The opener idea was deployed quite well to keep the team afloat while Glasnow and Snell were out. I understand why he and Hinch are friends.

Talk Zone / Re: Tipping pitches
« on: October 11, 2019, 07:32:58 am »
Excellent. Thanks for that. Your last point about the hitters skills being denigrated is true too often. Sometimes, and pretty often, the hitter simply hits a good pitch. Even where the pitcher executes the pitch as called in the right location, sometimes it just gets whacked hard. It's baseball. I tipped my hat to many hitters over the years for simply hitting good pitches. It's really all you can do.

The Roberts Dodgers have won 393 regular season games over the last four years. If you say he's a shitty manager, then you have to admit they've done a pretty decent job succeeding in spite of him. Maybe you want to make the argument he's a good regular season manager and a lousy postseason manager. My hunch is that he's a system manager, and that he's implementing the will of Andrew Friedman.

My Lord, man. The Dojers  front office and ownership assembled a team for the ages, which is why Roberts has succeeded during the regular season. However, it's clear beyond cavil that he's been questioned and lampooned by people who know concerning his in-game moves during the playoffs. I subscribe to the school (as does AJ Hinch) where in the playoffs, you put your best arm out there, irrespective of whether they've been a starter or reliever. Hinch noticeably out managed Roberts during the 2017 World Series. Some of Roberts moves in the 2018 WS quickened the end of the series in a negative way. He's just not that bright, or he doesn't listen to his bench coach or his bench coach isn't worth a shit. Either way, it's in the game management of the team. I will be shocked if he isn't shitcanned.

Agreed. He was an Astro.

Before the Division Series wraps up, I wanted to point out that there are at least three former bus ride managers manning coaching positions on playoff teams:

Rodney Linares - 3rd base coach - Rays
Stubby Clapp - 1st base coach - Cards
Tim Bogar - 1st base coach - Nats

Did I miss any?

Stubby Clapp is one of the all-time baseball names, kind of like Razor Shines.

The Yankees aren't better than us, but they're better now than they were most of the year and they're better than people have been giving them credit for. If we're lucky enough to face them again this year it's going to be intense.

Great point.  If Severino is healthy, he's an ace, and the Yankees bully is really only missing Betances. The Yankees hitters grind you by not swinging at bad pitches very often. Brett Gardner is still a very tough out, particularly in the playoffs. If we're lucky enough to win the Tampa Bay series, a series with the Yankees will be epic.

What a horrid statement.  Wallow in your misery?  Astros fans (us in particular) wallowed in a lot of misery I guess we should have jumped on any number of other teams wagons.  I'd never seriously tell a fan to leave the one they support.  Part of supporting your team is being honest about them.

And if I remember correctly, a lot of your "nation" wore bags on their heads when Hebert was their QB.  Aren't they the originators of the bagheads??

But, I will give you the fact that Sean Payton is a good coach.

You obviously missed my point. A group of you (and you know who you are) say almost nothing but negative things about the team. I'm not even sure that some of you are really Texans fans down deep. Perhaps the Tennessee Titans nee' Houston Oilers really is your team. The stark difference between the misery that we've all endured as Astros fans, I've heard very little of  comments like "the GM's an idiot. AJ's lineups and pitcher usage is horrible. etc. ad nauseum." We maintained a positive outlook during the Astros darkest days. I've heard nothing positive about the Texans. You should be grateful that it appears that you've got a QB. Cheer about that.

You think so? You live close to Detroit. Drive up there one day and ask around.

I know the Lions fan base well. They lack hope in ever winning again. There's a big difference between hopelessness and pessimism. Contrast the Lions fan base with that of the Browns. The Browns fan base is rabid and seriously beleives that they can compete this year. They're hopeful in spite of the early evidence to the contrary.

Nope.  But the clock management and lack of panic was exemplary.  This Texans roster likely scores there, but they’d never actually get there with the time...or timeouts...to do it.

Point of order: Texans fans have to be the most pessismistic in the league. It seems that a few of you simply follow the team even they they cause you much heartburn over how they are coached and run. Is the heartburn worth it? My Dad & I played a homemade dice baseball game when I was a kid ... taught myself long division keeping stats, which in retrospect may have been my Dad's motivation all along.  It did get me an extra recess period in 3rd grade during math class, but I digress.  We each "managed" 4 teams in the National League (playing a 42-game round-robin schedule), so when expansion hit I got the Colt 45's (somehow) while he got the Mets.  That could not have been geographical, because it was the summer we moved from Michigan to South Carolina.  As a side note, an expansion team typically does a lot better in a league that is 100% based on luck.  :-)  This was also one of two years I got to see the Pirates, my favorite NL team (and my Dad's), in spring training.  (My favorite AL team was the Tigers where I saw my first professional baseball games a few years earlier.). In any case, that was the beginning of my dislike of the Mets.

A couple of years later we moved again, this time to Texas.  My Dad's Pittsburgh roots ran deep, but as a brand new Texan I continued to follow the Astros neé Colts.  Probably due to the successes in 1968, 1979 & 1984 of my "favorite teams", the Astros were always a bit in the background, but seeing several games in the Dome helped.  And I was definitely crushed by the collapse of JR in 1980.  But I think 1986 is where my "bandwagon" turned the corner and I became an Astros fan first, with only a nostalgic attraction remaining for the Pirates and Tigers.  And when the Express showed up in RR, I was among the first to buy season tickets.  I had always followed the minor leagues, but that was when I graduated from occasional bus rider to aspiring bus driver.  Since 2000 I have spent 100% of my baseball time on the Astros and their minor league system.  I barely even recognize the names on opposing teams unless they happen to be refugees from Lexington or Salem or Lancaster or somewhere like that.  I am probably missing a lot of good baseball, bit I am enjoying the heck out of this "Golden Age" ... and all the more for my time on the bus.

And, for this, I am grateful. Your bus rider updates are much appreciated.

I've been following this team since I was a wee tyke during the Colt .45 days. As the team and I grew older, I started paying more attention to the standings and statistics.

Around 1969 or 1970 I started making note of the team's 82nd win, or 82nd loss. A winning record was a victory in those days and I always wanted the team to get that 82nd win. Years later, sometime after the All Star break, I started estimating the number of wins needed to win the division. Usually the Astros weren't the one to get it, but I was right in 1980 and again in 1999.

Then came The Troubles and the 63rd win became an annual milestone marked with solemnity.

At last came The Great Redemption and the Crane / Luhnow era. We have seen the greatest milestone of them all: 100 wins for three straight years!

I fuckin' love this team!

This is scarily uncanny and virtually mirrors my experience. I am close in age and used to look for and celebrate/commemorate the same wins/milestones. I vividly remember the disastrous 1975 campaign, which led to the hirings of Bill Virdon and Tal Smith and better times going into the latter 70's and early 80's and those classic battles with the Dojers. I absolutely and unconditionally love the Astros!!!

Maybe the luxury tax is unavoidable if they want to keep enough guys around while this window is open.  Remember that their 2020 payroll is already halfway there with only four players (Verlander, Greinke, Altuve, Bregman).

I'd venture to say being subject to the luxury tax is a requirement, because the other teams are doing it.

+1 Maybe the chickenshit owners saw that Dombrowski was slowly doing to Boston what he did to Detroit, where he left the club saddled with big contracts and aging players with nothing in the farm system. Detroit sucks today because of Dombowski's ignoring of player development through the draft.

That's the most delusional fan base in the country, with the possible exception of Notre Dame disciples. Even their regular beat writers and local talk radio guys are homers. After the loss to Georgia Southern, some of them were comparing the loss to some of the greatest recent upsets in college football history. And the comments are full of hyperbole sky is falling gotta fire the coach after one game. I revel in it, because I have hated those motherfuckers since the days of Bill Battle. They see their program as elite, which belies the truth.

Indeed, it could have gone either way. If Texas converts in the red zone in the first quarter, the game might have turned out very differently. Like I said, I love Ehlinger. He's a leader and one helluva QB. In my opinion, Texas is indeed back. It's clear beyond cavil that, after considering your Georgia asswhipping in the bowl game and this game with LSU, the difference betwen the SEC and Texas is zero.

Why? No fence to run into, gradual slope, embarrassment from falling down might injure pride. Twisted ankle? I suppose that is possible. I liked The Hill but really like what the Astros did with CF.

Fences are the issue for hurting OFers.

Right. I still have nightmares about a denial league play from about 25-30 years ago. I was pitching, and a nemesis (this fuckwad hit me hard in every league we ever played in from little league past high school) hits a forkball that stayed up  a ton to RF, where they had a very short fence. The RF, who really was a middle infielder, went back on the ball and thought that he had a shot at it. He flipped over the fence and broke his neck. MIraculously, he wasn't paralyzed, but his denial league and sports undertakings were over for life. I felt so badly because the CF was screaming at him to stop, but he didn't. That was his first (and, ironically, last) game playing right field since early in high school. He was only out there because he volunteered when our right fielder didn't show. As for the hitter, I never threw him another strike in his life. As far as I know, he's about 60 and still toiling in the denial leagues.

Mental illness seems to be the cause of everything from mass shooting to heroin addiction. No.

As a recovering addict, I agree wholeheartedly with Coach. I no longer buy all the crap about addiction being a disease; big pharma has co-opted medicine. Addiction is a choice, a very reckless choice. I tell people who are suffering in active addiction that they are free to pick their own bottom. Of course, the lowest bottom is overdose/death.

People can come back with the lame reply that they can't help using, but I counter with pick your own bottom. I then tell them that my bottom was a week in the suicide cage of a very cold parish jail. I tell them about a couple of friends who weren't so lucky. But it all goes back to a fundamental choice.

So I know next to nothing about fentanyl or the drug culture in general.  Why is it found in these pills in the first place?  Do bad actors put it in the pills specifically for the reason of harming/killing people, or it is because the drug can have other desirable effects when combined with oxy?

This is from drugs.com and just says it:

GENERALLY AVOID: Concomitant use of opioids with benzodiazepines or other central nervous system (CNS) depressants (e.g., nonbenzodiazepine sedatives/hypnotics, anxiolytics, muscle relaxants, general anesthetics, antipsychotics, other opioids, alcohol) may result in profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death. The risk of hypotension may also be increased with some CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines, phenothiazines).

I can't say that I wasn't surprised, but I was really hoping for something else to be true. This fentanyl is serious shit, and they're lacing heroin and other drugs with it. There's no way that I would take any pill today without knowing the source, and I say that as a guy who once bought over $30,000 of Xanax in one year from internet sellers overseas. The fentanyl is strong shit. The situation is still tragic, and I mourn for his family.

I think Carlos may have just one more year to show he can play a full season. His injury history is becoming a threat to his career potential. He is at least at some risk of having to become a Bill Spiers type player. One with superb talent but only able to play part-time because of back issues.

Of course I could be, and hopefully am, wrong.

All I know is that I was wrong about Correa. I thought that we had the next A-Rod. Wellsir, he's not even in the same stratosphere with A Rod. Good player? Yes. All Star. If healthy, maybe. There are better shortstops in the game, e.g., Lindor. And then this injury crap. Untouchable? Definitely not. Sell high. But sell.

Great article, which somewhat confirmed my thinking yesterday about why Ruiz got so many changeups. Osuna’s slider is a great pitch too, and he and the hitters are now 1-26 on changeups. No doubt Hinch has or will make the catchers aware of this too. A conversation with all of them in the room is a good idea which Hinch likely already has done. Maybe this is why Chirinos called so many in a row. Wilkerson ambushed his first pitch yesterday for a double, and this could have made Osuna reluctant to throw it at the end. Closing is tough business. If he gets them out, fans say “that is why he gets paid.” If he blows one like yesterday, all hell breaks out, and scorn and derision rain down.

I was going to meet some folks yesterday so listened to the bottom of the 9th on the radio. I had a vague, uneasy feeling from the beginning because Baltimore fought so hard all day and outplayed the Astros until the top of the 9th. I did not think they would go quietly, and Wilkerson’s charmed life movement  around the bases intensified my uneasiness. He could have been thrown out at third, he maybe WAS thrown out at home, yet the run was on the board. Then there was the HBP. After Sparks praised Osuna for being a pitcher who protects his teammates, I said out loud (to the radio) “Yeah, but that is the tying run.” Then multiple changeups to Ruiz (scouting report?) with the last one in the worst possible location and BOOM.

As I said yesterday, maybe on the GZ, my initial thought was the Astros were supposed to lose that game. Call it karma or the BBGs, but Baltimore deserved to win after their effort against JV taking the lead and driving him to cover after 5. A team does not beat another 23-2, even in the classy way the Astros handled the win, without some consequences somewhere. I hated the loss, which kicked me in the stomach like it did you, but part of me said “Good for you, Orioles, for not rolling over and quitting when the superior team rallied late.” The BBGs reminded me (and everyone?) even last place teams deserve respect.

Getting back on the winning track in Chicago will help hurt feelings a lot.

Damn, Coach. I had a very similar feeling. I was very impressed with the Orioles fight. Most shitty teams go down in order after losing a lead in the ninth inning. Congrats to the Birds.

Osuna's 1-3 with 16 saves and a 4.66 ERA in his last 30. Allowed 30 hits in 29 innings. His righty-lefty splits are off kilter. He's having a little difficulty getting righties out, pitching to a 3.97 ERA this year, as opposed to a .219 ERA against portsiders. His batting average against number lefty is an excellent .163, while his righty is .236, a bit more pedestrian, although certainly servicable.

Life makes it hard to focus at times - most of the time - and it's easy to miss what is really important.  Only one of our grand kids is under five,  They grow up really fast and will soon reach the point at which they no longer want much of our attention.  I have to remind myself that while it is easier to type on a computer keyboard than to listen to and play with them, it may not be as rewarding in the long run.  Some of our grand kids call to have us come and play with them.  That's a huge gift also.  I know they can wear you out, enjoy them while you can.  (We have a bag of games in the back of our van, just in case.)

The stats say otherwise. Pujols only drew more than 100 walks three times in his career to date. Conversely, Barry Bonds garnered 14 seasons of more than 100 walks, leading the league 11 times. He led the league in walks during his age 42 season. He hit .362 in his age 39 year. Pujols is great and a first ballot HOFer, but Barry Bonds was a far superior hitter. Pitchers intenionally walked Bonds with no one on base. I saw it happen in SFO. I never saw Pujols given that level of respect.

Roughly same as the 4seam. Average velocity on those to are separated by about .3 mph. Remember when McCullers would throw 90-91 mph change ups? It's not the mph difference by itself that makes the change up effective, it's the arm action paired with a slower spead. You would like a 10mph difference but most guys these days only have a 5-7mph difference, some less.

Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

Hogwash. Remember Hoffman with the Padres? Masterful changeup that he had only a couple of miles prer hour difference from his four seamer, but it didn't matter. The key to a change up is throwing it out of the same arm slot as the fastball.

My dad tells a story of struggling with command on the mound one day, and the manager comes out to have a word. Manager says “throw strikes”, and turns around and walks away. Dad says it was all he could do to not drill the manger right in the back.

Heard that type of shit  masquerading as advice many times. Another one that used to piss me off was "it's just pitch and catch, son."

There's only five reasons why a coach comes out there: (1) to give the bully time to get warm, (2) to give a pep talk, (3) to correct a mechanical issue or a releast point issue, (4) to take your young ass out, and (5) to give you a scouting report on an unfamiliar hitter.. In the case of the fourth, the coach's request for the pill is all the evidence one needs to ascertain that your next stop is the showers. The same is clear for the scouting report and mechanical error correction. I used to ask whihch of the other two other reasons are you out here for, pep talk or killing time for the bully?

Same. I wander in and out and think about the salad days of 100 loss years and franchise type players traded away in their near prime and think, "Where does the time go?" Then I realize that I'm really old now.

I don't remember what year it was I joined this band of merry misfits, but it was the days of the BFT. My loathing for HD ran deep, and many were the days that I wished to punch him in his face until he peed himself. Then I realized that I didn't really have anything to offer most conversations (I may have killed more threads than anyone in history), so now I mainly just lurk. The last post I remember making was WS game 7, but I may have something since then. No idea for sure though.

Thanks for still keeping the faith and being here.

Great to hear eye witness testimony regarding his current & potential OF and 1B proficiency!  That is good news.   My question was based on a limited sample, having seen him handle a few innings in one game, as well as how he has been under utilized (so far) in an NL home game - the St. Louis series.

Thanks also for your take of LA's reason to want a present value of Field's FB to any future value of their fresh and certainly unknown/unproven signee.  That makes sense to me.

Heck, tho they had been w/ the organization for some time, the Astros gave away JD Martinez and Laureano b/f their potential was fully realized and, until they showed more, they could not break in to 25-man roster, much less the lineup.  The Dodgers trade was based on scant information about Alvarez, obviously less than the Astros scouts had seen.

His ONLY AB last night reminded me why I hated the DH.  It's hard not to enjoy Alvarez as a DH.  (Tho I still get the haunting feeling from my younger self, that I am losing my baseball "virginity"}

I wonder if another former NL Astros fans also feel some minimal discomfort mixed with their joy of having Alvarez as an Astro DH.

Tks, JimR

We didn't give J.D. Martinez away. The player he was was wasn't in the team's plans. To his credit, Martinez reworked his swing and became a superstar. Hard to predict.

143
Hearing the Cardinal announcers getting excited over seeing Alvarez come to the plate - "We finally get to see him!  We've heard a lot about him...." - only to see him take a couple swings, smash a 2B, and then return to the bench after Straw comes in to run for him, it finally dawns on me that the Dodgers had no choice.

W/o a position, Alvarez was limited to a AB per game for the Dodgers.  They could have gotten much more for his bat had they waited, but Alvarez's value was limited in the NL team.

He is a force at the plate, but ultimately he is a one-dimensional player for now - the reason most of us hated the DH b/f the Astros moved to the AL.

Nonsense.

I just did admittedly imperfect research and found only one game at SS in 2018. I know how infrequently he played SS at RR in 2019. No doubt he took a million ground balls and listened to instruction about playing SS, but for him to be starting at SS for the Astros and holding his own in a pennant race is an amazing feat.

They might have had the idea in 2018, but part of one game is less than minuscule for such a demanding position. He was thrown in to see if he could handle it.

Thanks for your detailed knowledge, Duman. I was not misinformed after all.

Straw's been amazing given his lack of game practice. Obviously a great athlete. And I agree; Duman rocks.

I have been surprised (not in a good way) at Ausmus in post game interviews and especially in his comments after the Marisnick incident.  He comes across exasperated, dull, full of platitudes, not very insightful and decidedly old school. I have a hard time reconciling what I see with his reputation.

That said, my perception may be tainted by 4 years of Hinch, who is one of the most media-savvy baseball people I have ever seen.

Ausmus had a rep as a whiner in Detroit. His last year, he got run at least six times. Always bitching.

152
Spiking Marisnick was 100% bush. Marisnick was guilty of nothing but playing clean, sportsman like baseball. The Angels have been through a difficult time and Marisnick correctly gave them a pass.

An excellent point. I used to respect Ausmus as a manager, but he probably ordered the pitcher to dot Marisnick. I have no more respect for Ausmus. Fuck him. I hope his team falls apart.

It's easy to take for granted a player that has become so familiar.  That's when it can help to see him through the eyes of his opponents.

Last night the Rangers announcers highlighted Bregman's increasingly rare talent with these stats: "Players with at least 25 HR's & more walks than strikeouts".

It was a short list.

Only MLB Players with 25+ HR & more walks than strikeouts
ML Players   HR   BB   SO
Mike Trout   30   77   70
A Bregman   26   76   56

In 2016, only five players had more walks than K's, including one Astro.  This article did not focus just on HR hitters.

Thankful to see Bregman's interview about the HBP and the game last night.

He is a rare talent!

Yes on both accounts. For Beltran, he was a rental that I hoped would stay but felt confident that the team would still be a playoff contender with Bagwell, Biggio, Berkman, Ensberg, Lane, Palmeiro, etc… at the helm on offense and field defense. I was dazzled by his performance during the rental, for sure but also suspected he’d come back to earth over a full season, which he did and that might be the difference in a few games over the year. Which, in turn, would not have raised my expectations from playoff contender to WS contender.

Regarding Johnson, he was a rental and I never expected him to resign with the team. I had a hope but that was not based on anything other that fanboi desires and was deeply countered by the practical realities of the FA market at the time and known intelligence suggesting destinations on other teams.

About Morton, McCullers status was known and Morton represented the difference between WS aspirations and a potentially historic run for the year. Couple that with all the chatter about his happiness playing for THIS specific team, it was a shock and the implications were potentially noteworthy and actually being realized. So, yes, easily including Beltran and Johnson.

Excellent points. I knew we had no shot at the Big Unit, but I really thought we had Beltran.

Discount?  Again, it was more than anyone else was willing to pay him.  The Astros tried to sign him at OVER his market value.  TWICE!   I get that he overvalued himself.  That doesn't mean that the Astros tried to discount him.  They were clearly the highest offer.

When each new season starts, I forget. I forget there will be nights like last night when formerly dependable players falter and fail. I forget my favorite team occasionally blows a game it should have won. I forget those games when inferior teams suddenly display skills I forgot they had and for a brief time cannot be stopped. I remember only the good times, come from behind triumphs, and my team’s celebrations on the field after a win. I forget the other team wants to win badly also. I go into each season wanting to win them all, and I forget there will be crushing defeats keeping me from sleep.

Despite all this inevitable gloom and doom, occasioned by nights like last night, the beauty and joy of baseball makes it all worthwhile, and I am once again reminded: there always is another game.

Very well written and clearly and effectively displays both your passion for and knowledge of the game. Thank you for that. As for me, I was never able to remember game details because I tried mightily and, I guess, successfully, from an early age to remind myself that the past is over and there's always another game tomorrow.

I learned that lesson as a batboy for our then AA Texas League team. I wish that I had a dollar for every game detail about some game I pitched or attended that people have told me happened that I could only vaguely recall. And I say this as a guy who recalls with vivid detail some heartbreaking losses in basketball back from high school, but just not baseball.

He falls in love with his fastball.  And it's a good one.  And I like that he challenges hitters.  But maybe sometimes he's just stubborn about strike outs.

I really admre IV for stepping up and acknowledging that he's playing a part in the home run increase, instead of the default pitcher response heretofore-it's the ball.

I agree with HH. When JV was throwing 99 (which I've seen him do many times even in the ninth inning when we was with Detroit), he might have gotten away with it a bit more. I also that it's a matter of adjustment in part for age. Not even JV is immune from the effects of Father Time. He is 37. Time to pitch with a bit more guile. I'm not suggesting that he fall in love with his breaking ball, but perhaps a little more judicious use of his heater and a little dialing back of the desire to strike out every hitter might help.

What might be interesting about the juiced ball hubbub and the hitters' focus on launch angle is the effect that they might be having on pitchers who pitch to contact. Might have to take a look at that.

The Tech program is so far beyond the program I saw forty years ago that it's a completely different thing. The field then was about high school caliber and one just walked up to watch a game. The players practiced on hard pan dirt in 25 degree weather and 30 MPH wind in down jackets.

Rip Griffin donated a bunch of money and got the Red Raiders a real stadium and some other facilities, like indoor practice capability for harsh Lubbock winters. Then Kirby Holcutt was hired as A.D. and he hired Tim Tadlock who turned the program from an also-ran into a power.

Tadlock is a master of player development, which is what's needed to pull a program up from the bottom. Now, with the Red Raider's success, Tech is starting to see better recruiting which will hopefully keep us in the mix for Omaha for some time to come.

With men's T&F natty, men's basketball national runner-up, baseball, and Tech's continuing national dominance of meat judging, it's a golden age of Texas Tech sports......well, except for football.

The Texas Tech story is very similar to the LSU story. Before Skip Bertman became the coach, LSU baseball was really nothing. They sold tickets to the games, but the only people in the stands were our friends, girl friends, relatives, etc. The year before Skip arrived, LSU sold three season tickets. Three. There weren't dressing facilities for visiting teams. The coach's office was in the basketball arena. The coach my freshman year doubled as a football equipment manager.
Now they draw 10,000 or more for midweek games against primarily in-state schools.

If I hadn't been there from the beginning of the Skip Bertman era, andif you'd have told me back in 1982 (my senior year) that LSU would eventually have a major college baseball program that would win six CWS championships, I'd have laughed out loud and asked for some of what you were smoking. The bottom line is that great coaches like Skip and Coach Tadlock can buck the odds and build a perennial winner at any school. It takes vision and a whole lot of elbow grease.

I watched the game as a Seminole fan solely because of No. 11. 17 trips to the CWS and no titles. Believe me, it takes more than just talent to win the CWS. I wish Coach Martin well in retirement. He was one of the best coaches and role models in college baseball. He'll be missed.

I'm not that worried about getting swept by the Reds. Those of you who haven't been paying attention to the Reds, they've got a nice core nucleus of everyday players. In my view, with Castillo or even deSclafani on the bump, the Reds aren't far off from being a wild card team in the NL Central. Simply put, the Reds are better than you think.

I'm also not going to panic or wail or gnash teeth over the Marisnick/Straw argument. I believe that Marisnick's best spot is as fourth outfielder because of the lack of production. I've been very pleased that the club has done what it's done without Altuve, Springer and Correa.

Calm down.

I remember Ben McDonald saying that the CWS teams were equivalent to AA.  I'm of the belief that his statement is off the charts wrong, so much so that I went through a thought experiment.  If there were 8 four-team, double elimination tournaments with the top 24 ranked college teams and the 8 Texas League teams, I'd take even money that the final 8 teams would all be the Texas League teams.

Sure, there are college players who would not embarrass  themselves in AA, but the average to below average AA position player would be one of the top players on the best college teams, and the sheer pitching depth of an AA team would overwhelm college teams.

I love Big Ben like a brother, but that's pure hogwash, even with him on the bump.

That's interesting. I would not have expected college (even the mighty SEC) to have a higher level of competition than AA and AAA professional baseball.

You'll find no bigger lackey for the SEC than yours truly, but the notion that even SEC ball with a stellar starter (like the Rocker kid from Vandy) isn't close to being AA ball is laughable. The best teams could probably compete alright with high A clubs, but that would only be with an ace on the bump.

The College World Series field is set. Here are the first game match-ups:
Michigan vs Texas Tech
Vanderbilt vs Louisville
Arkansas vs Florida State
Auburn vs Mississippi State

Congratulations to the super regional victors. Next weekend in Omaha.

They're going to have a lot of newbie fans in Omaha this year. Congratulations to Michigan, Texas Tech and Louisville for getting in for the first time or in a long time. Note that half of the field again is from the SEC (Superior Effing Conference).

Current episode is out and it is very good.  Love hearing Brent Strom talk pitching with McHugh.  Hot take - the Vietnam war was an important part of making Nolan Ryan the pitcher he was due to Ryan having to do Guard duty and limiting his pitch count during his 18-20 yr old years when he was wild and still growing.

I saw Ryan pitch for the steM a couple of times. He had no idea where the ball was going. But his control wasn't great during his early years with the Halos, where he routinely walked more than five or six hitters, but always striking out more than one per inning, in his starts.

When I first saw the first and third play on which the fourth run scored, my first thought was “WTF is the SS doing?” Why did he throw home instead of turning two to end the inning?” TK said this on his pbp. Perhaps some or many of you thought the same thing. But after watching the replay several times, I changed my mind, and Stanton voiced my current opinion in the postgame show.

The catcher was the one at fault. With a runner at third and one out, he cannot assume a double play attempt and leave the plate uncovered. Think Bregman and McCann in Game Seven against NYY. The Seattle SS had to charge the ball slightly to his right and was moving diagonally away from second base. Right or wrong, he made the judgment he did not have time to stop, plant, turn, and get the DP to end the inning and to keep the run from scoring. Like Bregman in the ALCS, he threw home to cut off the run which he thought would score if he tried for a DP. The catcher had no business vacating to plate in that situation, and the runner coming from third would have been out. The SS looked foolish throwing to an uncovered base, but the error in judgment was the catcher’s.

That catcher was boneheaded.

Congrats to my Tigers for being selected to host a super-regional against Florida State. I must admit to being somewhat ambivalent about playing Florida State, and their venerable head coach, Mike Martin. I had the opportunity to meet with Coach Martin when Florida State entertained the Tigers. He's been the Florida State Seminoles head baseball coach for approximately 45 years. Despite his long career, and a bevy of College World Series appearances, Coach Martin has never won a college world series. I'd really like to see him win one, even if it is at our expense, because he's one of the realaly good guys in college baseball.

I mainly watched AA over the last decade and only seen a few AAA games during that time.  From that small sample size, I agree that a lot of AAA players just appear to be going through the motions.  However, I've concluded that you can't take much away from that.  I saw Fisher just last week loaf out a ball hit to second, and it was difficult to watch but he's hustling in the big leagues now.

AA is a better product IMO as the games have more intensity.

Excellent observation, and it is certainly in line with my thoughts as well. I've seen lots of both AA and AAA ball. AAA has become a storing place for "insurance policy" players, e.g., the third catcher, backup starting pitching, etc., while most of the real prospects are at AA. Many of these AAA players who are on the 40 man roster frequently shuttle back and forth to the big leagues. Detroit shuttles players back and forth here to Toledo almost every day. Often, these players have some time in the show. For example, I just saw Logan Morrison and Brad Miller playing for Scranton-Wilks Barre (and Morrison not very well, hitting about .130).

Conference fandom is one of the strangest things about college sports. You'll see plenty of trucks sporting around with an "SEC" sticker but I simply can't bring myself to root for the AL West on pure principle.

This is a good thread, I love learning about pitching from you guys. Stuff I never noticed before, I now look for because of info passed along from Jim, HH, Doyce, and a few others. Even Mr Happy.

You rang? Martin's approach is very similar to what I used to teach. I believe that every movement in a windup should have a purpose. I very much favor an Occam's Razor approach. While I understand the desire to interpose more motion in an attempt to either hide the ball or deceive the hitter, I have always maintained that the most important aspect of pitching is balance.

It's essential to be able to repeat a delivery, and in my opinion, the more motion you have, the higher the likelihood that you'll have mechanical problems or trouble repeating a delivery. Remember that I  primarily worked with beginning pitchers.

My argument would be, "What's the rush?"

White, Kemp, Diaz & Guerriel have all struggled to this point in the season, but a month is all we have played.  No reason to think any of them can't turn it around.

I realize Kemp & Diaz are more valuable because of their ability to play multiple positions but White posted a line of:  .276/.354/.533 in 66 games (210 ABs) last season.  It is only one game, but we are leading the division, and done so even though it has been against a fairly tough schedule (as others have posted).  So I'm thinking there is no reason to change anything, yet.  Let Alvarez get more PT in the OF and let White get a few more ABs to turn things around.  If he's still shitting the bed in 3 or 4 weeks then I'll agree with you.

One of the things I love about the Astros organization is they tend to play the long game with players.  Sometimes you'll get burned doing this but overall I think it pays dividends as players know they will be backed (to a certain point) and are given fair shots to succeed or fail.

But he didn’t get the target, which was a duly elected president. You libs know that you’re upset that Mueller didn’t find anything concerning collusion with the Russians. The other convictions were just about meaningless.

I noticed that none of you addressed the fate of the treasonous folks in the CIA, FBI and DOJ who had the unmitigated gall to try to topple a presidency. This place is interesting. As an out of towner I was thrilled to find a really smart Astros baseball community.
Until I had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with good ole Jim R - the proverbial internet tough guy.

JR decides who has the right to speak her. He demands credentials. He needs posts to be appropriately worded.
He doesn't need anyone else to contribute. He is MR CONTRIBUTOR.

I had this crazy ass notion that being the fan of the same team made it OK for 'outsiders' to post here.

But no, good ole JR just wants to play a colossal game of dick out deciding who gets to talk Astros baseball and who doesn't.

So when I mention at 10pm at night that I saw Verlander was in final stages of contract negotiation, and I look at the headlines and don't see it
mentioned, I figured what the hell, no one could possibly find fault with me sharing that insight.

Wrong.

Good ole JR decided that he had to attack even that innocuous post. Personally.

You guys have a helluva website. And I know you are a tight knit community, so leaving this here isn't going to make any friends.

But it truly sucks that one tired, bitter old man can spew his shit with immunity.

Stick around, you can learn lots. In the 20 (has it been that long?) years that I've been around, I've learned more baseball here than I ever learned from any coach, and I had a couple of good ones. This, this, this. Does anyone doubt they have a plan? Crane said at the outset of ST they wanted to extend both pitchers, and I’ll bet they try. Handwringing posts about money and luxury tax saying what the Astros will or won’t do are a waste of time to type and an even bigger waste of time to read. It is Crane’s money, and he has had a taste of winning big and likes it. We fans owe him a million thanks.

This. This right here. They've got a plan. All I know is that I'm not privy to it. But in Luhnow I trust, with Crane's backing.

Cincy gets another shot against the Coogs tomorrow in the AAC tourney championship game. It will be a real slobber-knocker. Always hear about how  it's tough to beat a team three times in a season. I love watching the Cougars play but I hate watching them shoot free throws.

The same could be said about watching any college or professional teams shoot free throws. It's like they've forgotten the meaning of free. They go tothe line with no plan, no routine, and really no chance to make more than about 65% of the free throws. Good teams shoot at least 70-75% from the line.

Only resurrecting the thread, not Rusty himself.

The error that allowed those runs to score was by the usually reliable Roger Metzger.

Unconnected to the above but the NY Times article about Metzger's later encounter with a table saw.

And what would Carlos May's career have looked like if he hadn't lost his right thumb in a training accident while in the Marine Reserves in Aug. 1969? Even thumb-less, it wasn't shabby.

Was Carlos the only MLB player to ever where his birthday on his uni? "May 19"

Yes, I'm sure you knew Carlos was Lee May's brother.

Touched on in the thread but had Wilson gotten that 3rd no-no he would have joined Ryan, Koufax, Feller, Cy Young and Larry Corcoran as the only members of an exclusive clique with more than 2 no-hitters.

And finally why I sought this thread out in the first place was to post a link to this: Don Wilson's life and death, his career, how Clay Kirby was probably sympathizing with Wilson during the near no-hitter and why the Claude Osteen acquisition stunk for several reasons.

And it's a damn good article and I don't really give a flying fuck if someone might've previously linked to it in the past 8 years.

Why yes, I am having one of those stream of consciousness type mornings. How's yours?

No kidding. Foul balls are not a problem, they are one of the compelling features of the game. A 10+ pitch at bat is entertainment gold to me. The pitcher with a “oh, got away with a mistake there” look or the hitter digging in and thinking “I just missed that, throw one more of those and I’m going to crush it”. High drama and quintessential baseball.

You're absolutely right. As a pitcher, I used to get more amped up when the number of pitches got to seven. I loved competing at that point, because, as you say, both the pitcher and the hitter have missed pitches and lived to hit another pitch.

I am staring to think winning these hearings is less important to Luhnow than following his plan. Part of the plan is determining what the players are worth budgetwise and offering only that amount. The club will consider a reasonable compromise to a number within the plan and go to a hearing if the player is not interested in the compromise number. The club puts on its best case in a businesslike professional manner without getting personal or denigrating the player’s efforts or contributions to the organization, and if the arbitrator rules for the player, so be it. Luhnow stuck to the plan without emotion or rancor, and the club did not piss off the player. Going to a hearing is merely a business decision based on an impersonal evaluation of monetary value, and win or lose, the decision is not a personal attack on the player or his accomplishments and contributions to the team and its season.

All of this stuff exists only in my head, of course, but I starting thinking this might be Luhnow’s approach when Correa complimented management on its professionalism after his hearing.

I couldn't agree more. With Luhnow, it's about process.

Let's pretend Devo comes into a game with the Astros up 6 - 1 in the top of the 8th to relieve Peacock who has just loaded the bases with no outs. Devo throws three balls and then gives up a grand slam to make the score 6-5. Next batter hits a rope to LF for a single. Then Hinch says to no one in particular, "Damn, Osuna hasn't pitched in three days and is ready to go. Too bad Devo has to face another batter before I can make a change."

That is not the kind of magerial handcuffing I want to see.

I took a crack at it this morning to see if there was an obvious answer. Didn’t find anyone who jumped out, but another data point or two could probably solve the mystery. Baseball Reference has some really good search tools. You can even search for players who died in a given state, if you happen to have a hunch that the guy lived out his days in East Texas.

I wouldn't be surprised if he died in Marshall. He was older than my grandfather, who died at 71 (that's looking younger every day except for Coach, who probably saw this guy play.

Hap, if you know the teams he played for and roughly the years (and he was telling the truth), it wouldn't take but a small amount of detective work to figure out who it was.

I obviously don't know the exact years he played and don't know for certain all of the teams he played for, but some of that time was during the teens because Ruth stopped pitching around 1919. Maybe I'll do some sleuthing. I should have asked my Dad his name, but Dad's gone.

I can go either way on the DH, but I really dislike the three batter minimum. I got no problem with mound visits being limited to 3 per game. I like baseball game management and strategy but that is hurt by the inconsistency of one league having a DH and the other not, and it would be hurt by imposing batters faced minimums.

If saving time is a priority then they do need a 18 to 20 second pitch clock and a rule to keep batters in the box.

I think that the three batter minimum is going to improve rosters. There will no longer be a roster spot for a left-handed relief specialist. I never have had much use for pitchers who couldn't get hitters from both sides of the plate out. I hate those lefty specialists that right-handed hitters murder. Let's face it: you know the lefty I'm talking about because there are several of them in the baseball. They throw 85-90 heaters and sweeping sliders. Every fucking one of them. If they weren't lefties, they'd be selling cars.

Dizzy was probably remembered more for his voice than his baseball talent.  What a personality-just a good ole country boy who played that shtick to perfection.

He was a great pitcher until he got hit in the foott with a batted ball. It somehow changed his deliovery and make him less effective. His brother, Paul, known as Daffy, also was a pretty good pitcher, but not as good as Ole Diz.

While I'm reminiscing, my paternal grandfather died in Marshall, Texas, where he was living. He lived in half of a double. When we arrived so that Dad could take care of the arrangements, we immediately started throwing the baseball in the front yard. The neighbor, an elderly man, came out and sat on the front porch and was interested in us throwing the ball.

It wasn't long before we were up on the porch listening to baseball stories from the old man, whose name I never knew, because he had played in the big leagues with the Philadelphia Athletics, Cleveland Indians and one more team that I can no longer remember, but it may have been the Red Sox. It was an American League team. We listened to him telling stories for two hours non-stop, until Mom came out and broke it up, thinking that we were imposing on him.

He mesmerized three boys ages 9-11 for that long, which is some feat, because he was a great story teller. He was an outfielder for most of his career, but he said that he played some first base later in his career. I don't remember what he said about the length of his career, but he said that he continued to play for several years in the minor leagues after the end of his big league career.  He said that the minors were full of talent and that some players preferred to play in the minors because salary wasn't much different and the travel was easier because every town had a club, which stunned me because I always thought that the goal was to play in the Show, but I was wrong at least for back then.

God, how I wish that I had taped that session. I have forgotten most of the stories, sadly lost to the sands of time, but I remember two comments vividly. He played for Connie Mack, who he called a cheap bastard (his words, for which he quickly apologized and asked that we not mention it to my parents, which we didn't because we thought it cool that an adult cussed and wasn't cussing us!) and lousy manager. He also had many at-bats against Babe Ruth, who he said was the best left-handed pitcher in the Junior Circuit. He told us stories about essentially living on the trains and how tough it was. He also said that he always had a job in the off-season, primarily selling things.

I wish that I remembered more, but I'm grateful for the memories that I have, including listening to a a guy who played against Babe Ruth.

Mine was meeting Dizzy Dean and getting his autograph on my Astros hat that Harry Walker sent to me. Dizzy was in my hometown to broadcast a few innings of the minor league game and meet and greet the fans. Even though I never saw Dizzy Dean pitch, I knew lots of stories about the old Cardinals Gas House Gang because my Dad was a Cardinals fan (furthest team down south for many years). My hometown had a St. Louis Cardinals radio outlet until the Astros came into baseball.

He was friendly and wanted to talk baseball, whicch tickled the shit of me at 12. I could have had him autograph my Aces hat, but I had him sign my Astros hat. He wrote: "Best of luck from Ole Diz." Sadly, because I was probably doing something I shouldn't have been doing (manning a water balloon slingshot at summer camp aimed at girls across the lake), the slingshot recoiled and I ended up in the lake, and the lake swallowed my hat. I was devastated. I swam and looked around for the hat to no avail.

As I recall, Dizzy was dead within about a year of that chance encounter. It's truly one of my most prized memories. It's a connection, however tenuous, to a significant period in baseball.

I know I’m probably in the minority, but I’ve grown to love the DH. I never want to see another pitcher hit.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

When I was pitching, I fucking loved the DH, and so did my teammates, because all I could do with a bat was bunt. I may have been the worst hitter ever. As a lifelong NL fan, I decried the DH about the purity of the game. However, after the Astros have been using the DH, I now like it, perhaps a nod to my lack of hitting ability.

I figured that if I had been good and fortunate enough to have pitched professionally, no one but no one would willingly pay to see me hack. I was such a poor hitter and hated hitting so much that my coach in American Legion, when we were way up, would occasionally fuck with me and make me pinch hit, and, of course, all my teammates would be caterwalling from the dugout when I went to the on deck circle. Bastards had too much fun at my expense, but it was great for team morale, not that it was ever a problem because it wasn't. That team was undefeated two years in a row.

With the retirement of legendary coach Mike Gillespie, Orloff has moved up and is now the HC for UC Irvine.

In the meantime, poor old Mike Martin trudges on. I got to spend some time with him and Skip Bertman together back in 1986 at Florida State. He's such a gentleman and a class act, but he's still chasing that first CWS championship-often a bridesmaid but never the bride. Mike's unbelievably still coaching. Skip told a group of us that he wouldn't be an old man coach, and he wasn't. Well, here is mine. I was always a pretty good hitter. Started as a freshman in high school and played every game into my senior year. I had NO power however. I was a line drive hitter and almost never struck out. I struck out only once my senior year in 20 plus games. Remember, I said I had NO power. I had never hit a home run in any league at any age in my life...EVER. Well, senior year of high school 3 games left in the season. I got a hanging curveball and hit my first home run over the left centerfield fence. I still remember to this day how the ball felt coming off the bat. After hitting the only home run of my life, my next at bat was also memorable. Ground ball down the line at third pulled the third baseman into foul territory as he threw to first. The throw was up the line and I collided with the first baseman. I went over him into the air and came down on my left shoulder breaking my collarbone. I knew it instantly as it sounded like a shotgun blast when it broke. Almost came thru the skin. It basically ended my playing days as I fell in love after that and stayed home rather than taking a shot at college ball. I do wonder what could have been but I married her and have two wonderful children, one of whom just got a full ride to Mercer University.  We’ve been married now for 27 years so it all worked out!!

Go Astros!!

I just may have been the worst hitter in baseball history. I had a summer league coach make me pinch hit once against the best hook in the league, just to fuck with me. My teammates were calling me slugger from the dugout, those assholes. He threw two looping yellow hammers for strikes. I said here comes the curveball down in the dirt. He threw it right into my swing path, and I hit it to the 400 foot sign in center field, but a high school teammate who was playing for the other team caught it. I was so close to a home run, yet so far away.  It's like the big fish that got away.

I just found one of my score books from scoring my son's games.  One was his first varsity start from his freshman year. My wife scored since I was at a conference.  My son took the book from me, pointed to a double in the first and said, "That was my first curve ball in my career.  It didn't break."  He handed the book back to me with a smile.

He had been taught the curve ball in the bullpen warming up for the game.  Fun memories.

Great memories indeed. It drudged up a memory of mine.  I was mopping up in a midweek game where we were getting the shit kicked out of us. They were hitting me too, but there was no one up in the bully. This game was mine to finish, and there wasn't any pitch count consideration. I used to clown around in the bully iimitating Gene Garber throwing "the thing," as his out pitch was known.

As you may recall, Garber had a very unusual delivery and really was sidearm. Garber was the pitcher who ended Pete Rose's 45 game hitting streak. Wellsir, I had a guy down 0-2, and the catcher called for my forkball/splitter down, which was my out pitch in that situation. But what did I do but throw a Garber like pitch that the hitter hit into the next parish for a three run homer. The coach called time and came running out to the mound. He beat the catcher to the mound, so I was all alone. His words were "what in the holy name of God was that?" He'd never seen it, but the pitching coach knew about it. His next words were priceless: " well, it sucked a hind tit, son. Don't throw it again." To which I mumbled yessir.

I indeed finished the game, which we lost 17-5. Unlike Duman's son, my line that day was not pretty (something like 3.1 innings, five hits, four earnies but six strikeouts (four swinging)), but I saved our bully, which didn't mean much because we really were terrible.

Memories indeed.

My daughter has recently expressed interest in joining a fantasy baseball league...I told her I would help her find one and also help her with the process in her first season.  If anyone knows of a league that has a spot to fill please shoot me a PM.  Thanks.  I sure hope I can find one.  Just another way her and I can share the great game of baseball.  Hopefully it's ok for me to post this here.  If it needs to be moved to another forum just let me know and I'll nuke it myself and move over as needed.

Thanks.

Hell, let her in our league. She might give you more competition than we did last year.

I love old programs. I have a program or scorecard from every MLB game I've attended since I was 10, and it's fun to go back through them for the various memories they bring up (like those you mentioned).

My father passed away when I was really young, so finding some of his old scorecards years later -- he grew up in Chicago, so they were from Comiskey and Wrigley in the '60s -- was really cool. To see the names of the players he saw in person, and to picture him there... it's hard to put words to the feelings it brought up.

What a great treasure trove of memories. I had all of my scorecards from LSU's 1991 season, which was the first time we won the College World Series. I was physically present for 59 of the 71 games. But they got thrown out in a move. But you have your scorecards, and those from your Dad. Do y'all keep score similarly (everyone has scoring quirks-my scorecards recorded balls and strikes, and number of pitches)?

Good points Doyce across the board.

The only pieces I might add would be that our lineup could afford BH some more protection than I think the Nationals were able to provide.  I would expect his numbers to increase given no big injuries.  Could be off here, but I think he could really be dangerous in the juice box.  We have not had that kind of power since Beltran's wonderful year in the playoffs.

Also, I wonder if FA's see Houston as a place to (re)learn, improve their craft --- Brett Strom and his staff are top drawer and could offer BH some input in how pitchers attack him --- a lot of places can do this, but Astros analytics seem to make players better (i.e. Pressley, Cole, McCann when not injured, and Reddick has improved in some weird areas.)

Lastly, in terms of WAR - you are correct, but I would hope with a lineup including Harper that everyone contributes and any one players' WAR would be around the same --- considering MVP's out the wazoo on our team.  In short, my thesis here is that Harper's individual contribution would be a nice part of the greater whole but not reliant upon him and his WAR...

Thanks for the conversation.   I am not sure about CC or Springer, and I think Cole will be resigned with Verlander money when the dude puts up the spikes.  But there are people here like yourself who know much more about this than I.

Noe & Nate, might have some insights to this as well.

I think that you might have hit on something that might attract more free agents to Houston-Astros performance analytics are second to none. Great discussion here, y'all.

Yes, he now has 2 rings. And the ex-punter is the proud papa of a punter. No, Will is not a 2-sport athlete like the old man. But nephew Carson does play on the Clemson baseball squad and as a soph reliever last year allowed just 22 hits in 48 IP. Three generations of Spiers have played baseball at the school.

I never cease to be amazed at multi-sport college or professional athletes. It's hard enough to play one sport at that level. I'm happy for the Spiers clan. Coach Swinney has an amazing program.

Another write up/perspective on Adolph, for whatever it's worth:

https://www.amazinavenue.com/2018/10/24/18003606/2018-best-prospects-cf-ross-adolph-brooklyn-cyclones

I saw Adolph play a lot here in Toledo. Toledo Coach Mee really likes him. The problem with MAC baseball is that every team usually only has one good college pitcher, so pitching is very thin in the MAC. Therefore, it's hard to judge a player here. However, out of all of the kids I've seen here for the past five years, Adolph's probably the best player of the bunch. I think that it's cool as shit that a University of Toledo kid is in the Astros system.

321
All I get with that link are a bunch of popups.  Care to elaborate?

It was a link to a Washington Post article/editorial. It mentioned the "police acted stupidly" in the arrest of Henry Louis Gates comment. Some of his Trayvon Martin comments like if I had a son, he'd probably look like Trayvon. He had other disparaging comments about law enforcement. The few folks I know who are in the military now loathed President Obama for his lack of respect.

323
It's kind of like conservatives blame Obama for "worsening race relations in the country." It's an assertion that not only has no basis in fact but is directly refuted by actual history, but it gets repeated enough they convince themselves it's true.

I recall President saying some pretty irresponsible racial things about the police in the Trayvon Martin incident. It's perfectly okay for you libs to be silent after the NY socialist's followers threatened my friend, Steve Scalise, who **was** shot in a politically motivated act, with more violence. Did she try to walk that back? Nope. Did any of you express outrage about that? Again. Crickets...

326
All that stuff you said about hordes being infiltrated by gangs and Muslim extremists is completely false.  Think about it: why would they?   To think otherwise is to believe that someone from ISIS is going to go to Honduras - obviously after having learned Spanish with a pitch-perfect Honduran accent - to join a caravan, slowly to walk thousands of miles under the gaze of the world media apparatus, to get to the US.  All of this instead of buying a plane ticket.  The alternative to believing all of that inconceivable nonsense is to believe that brown people are universally interchangeable.

In the meantime, the people actually in the caravan are asylum-seekers risking life and limb to make a better life for themselves and their families.  US law allows them to cross the border and - as long as they present themselves to US authorities at the earliest opportunity - their crossing of the border is entirely legal.

As for the free stuff comment, you should know better.  Immigrants - like myself - drive the economy.  We buy goods and services that drive demand.  We supply labor.  What we don’t get is free stuff.  You are completely ignorant - willfully or otherwise - of what you speak.  Maybe that’s why you love Trump so much.

You're telling me with a straight face that the Democrats don't promise things to the poor to get them to vote for them? Ha. We want immigrants like you because somehow you're a productive member of society because we gave you a hand up. What we don't need are more people who are poorly educated, who don't wish to assimilate like you have and who need hand outs because we can't afford it in my opinion.

327
You do understand that your “border security” issue is bogus, correct?  People crossing the border illegally has been dropping for decades. The government is closed and the media can’t talk about anything else, but it’s a made up issue.

I couldn't disagree more with you here. When hordes organized by rabble rousers and infiltrated by gangs and other radical Muslim extremists are approaching our border, like is the case now (just heard another horde is organizing now), I'm damn glad that Donald Trump is president and no sniveling Democrats peddling free stuff for all has much to say about that.

328
What good things do you think he has done?

Appointed two conservative justices, tax cut, new trade agreements, hopefully reinvigorating the border security after eight years of nothing, reinvesting in the military, etc.

329
Why? This is the thing that confuses me. The guy is clearly out of his element, and completely lacking in any sort of ability to assess a situation. Is the desire to keep Republican control of power so extreme that you're willing to support an obvious moron?

For me, it was anybody but Hillary Clinton, so I voted for President Trump and didn't know how he'd do, but I've been pleasantly surprised. I disagree with your conclusion that President Trump is out of his element. I think He's done some very good things. The press has been ruthless and unfair to him. I hate the main stream media because of their now obvious bias, so that simply pushs me more toward the President.

330
I’d love to hear from anyone who use to trumpet that Obama was the most divisive president ever, but that now supports the fucking moron in office.

There is substantial evidence that President Obama was in fact divisive. Was he the most divisive? I don't know and don't want to make such an argument. Do I support President Trump? Absolutely.

331
In the Rose Garden, Trump is lying his considerable ass off about things as diverse as the whereabouts of Mitch McConnell - "he's running the Senate", says Trump, when the Senate had long adjourned for the weekend - to declaring a national emergency and using the "military version of eminent domain" to get the wall built.

Does he really think he can send the army down to the Texas border to seize private land and hold it while he builds the wall?  Isn't this what militia folks think the 2nd Amendment is there to prevent?  Are conservatives going to have to eat a Texas-sized shit sandwich about eminent domain?  Seriously what the fucking fuck?

I don't think that's going to happen.

333
Honest question - to which members are you referring?  Because in looking at the list of countries represented on the committee, there are only 2-3 that really jump off the page for me.  One of them is Israel, a perennial darling of the Republican party.  But maybe I'm not completely up on current events.

I was referring to the Human Rights Council, which is comprised of a lot of bad actor, which besmerches service with those countries when all they are doing is battling one of their enemies, Israel.

334
There's a difference between the committee, which is the 18 independent experts you linked to and the human rights council, which is comprised of 47 member states serving staggered three year terms. Currently the council includes stalwarts as Somalia, Venezuela, Kyrgyzstan, UAE, China, etc...  The council has been criticized for condemning Israel more than the rest of the world combined. My guess is Happy is conflating the two.

Negative. It was the larger council to which I was referring.

335
If you can't lead by example, you can't lead.

Wrong. A million times wrong. He's leading hopefully by protesting the all-star rogue nation makeup of the committee. Sometimes, a leader has to go it alone for a while.

336
In making America great again news, we are no longer responding to the UN when they ask us questions about potential human rights violations.

#Leadership

Given the makeup of the UN Human Rights Committee, I agree with the move. Until the UN gets serious about real human rights and starts going after the very members of that committee, all-stars all of them in human rights violations, we should pay them no mind.

337
A quick google search told me that Justin Amash was also booed. This entire thread needs some serious fact-checking.

Kluber is more polished and has better makeup. However, Bauer is by far the better arm, with now three plus pitches. Bauer matured a lot last season, particularly in the second half. I'd take Bauer, but not without some clubhouse concerns. Bauer can be a bit of a loose cannon.

So Vauthrin, with a commanding lead, gets beat in successive weeks by me, who sucks, and then by Zipp, who's not even fucking playing, and I'm not sure which is worse.

And then duman turns in a perfectly respectable game leaving nothing of value on the bench only to lose by a fingernail.

And austro, man, I don't know, but I feel for you. I bet there are three or four teams this week with one player that eclipsed your entire team.

Fantasy football is a cruel mistress.

Catching is hard. It's a quick path for advancement if you're good at it, but its a rough position.  And it's not as glamorous as P/SS.

It's no accident that the catching equipment is referred to as the tools of ignorance. Despite my size, I caught when I was a young player and liked it. However, and in addition to the other excellent points made above, catching becomes incredibly harder when the ball starts moving, which I recall happened first for me as a catcher at 12 in 1972. I had an opportunity to play catch with then Alexandria Ace Randy Johnson, who many of you will remember as a diminutive (about 5'8") portsider who was a groundball machine.

Jones pitched for the Padres and Pirates as I recall, and I believe Jones won 20 games twice and lost 20 games once. His fastball topped out in Alexandria at 79. His sinker ball was thrown around 74. However, after taking the goadings of a cocky, excited 12 year old bat boy to throw the sinker, he finally relented and threw it. I got hit in the legs with the first four that he threw, but hung in there and caught the fifth toss. That ball moved downward late a good 8-12 inches. It was a really good sinker, as I would learn later. I caught all the way through, but only as the emergency catcher and sometimes bullpen catcher.

The slider is a particular bitch of a pitch to catch.

College coaches of all sports are control freaks who dont trust their players. It's why college basketball is so goddamn terrible these days. Just because a pitcher is told "this is what your throwing" doesnt mean he isn't thinking. At the professional level, coaches have input but you are not going to let them take that control away from you. You know what pitch you're feeling good about and the catcher knows what pitch is working. Professional coaches understand this.

Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

Coaches of all stripes are control freaks in my opinion. There's also a big difference betweeen a veteran pitcher and a young pitcher in the leeway that coaches will give. However, I think that you'd be surprised about this.

My point is that tomorrow's pitchers are being taught to think less. It's only a matter of time before it happens at the big league level. However, without looking for data, I'd be shocked if a fair amount of pitches aren't being called from the bench in professional baseball.

You sure about that? I know several college coaches who call every pitch.

What percentage of pitches are called from the dugout?

Sadly, that percentage is increasing. Rapidly. Those control freak coaches want to call every pitch, every pitch out, etc. I have always maintained that the catcher really is in the best position to call the pitches. That's one of the reasons why I was hesitant to shake off unless I felt strongly either in favor of a different pitch/location or really lacked confidence in a particular pitch/location. Thinking pitchers are better in my opinion than robots who simply execute orders and don't think for themselves.

I'll bet the Urban Meyer press conference afterward was fun.

It's been a real treat to be up here in Buckeye country for that debacle. There's been a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth, including accusations that Urban needs some better defensive coaches. I told them that this indeed was some feat. Not only did they break their streak against Purdue of twenty-gazillion games, but they managed to turn a 29 point favorite into a 29 point loss. I comforted them with the knowledge that a 58 point swing doesn't just happen every day.

Absolutely. Tito is being criticized a little for that move, which I find unfair and disingenuous. Suppose that he hadn't turned Marwin around, and Marwin hit the ball out of the yard, the critics and monday morning quarterbacks would have jumped on him for that.

Let me guess, Happy and all his fake DM/inbox crowd are all huge “personal responsibility” and  limited government phonies

Nothing fake about a couple of supporters, neither of whom said much about their politics.

First of all, my only knowledge of you comes from what you have posted on this site over the last two decades. One fact is entirely clear based on that history: you are a loser. And, I honestly only mean that as a statement of fact and not in a pejorative way. You played college baseball and had enough intelligence, luck, connections, strong work ethic--or some combination of the four--to be accepted to Georgetown Law School. Those facts alone indicate that your life was off to an auspicious start. Your addiction and other personal issues derailed you. You were a negligent father and a shitty husband. You now seem to be relatively economically disenfranchised, a key symptom of many of those who support Trump, and something that our leadership and government needs to address for all demographics that are struggling to pay bills as the wealth gap continues to widen. And I applaud you for overcoming your struggle with addiction. However, rather than to use your struggles as a lens to view the world through, making you a more empathetic person, you have chosen to be bitter and angry, to revel in "owning libs," which I swear will never do anything to improve your own personal economic or social circumstances, and to be divisive on this board and, I'm sure, in your community.

The truth is, if you weren't white, you would be dead or in jail. The time you were standing on your wife or ex-wife's front yard with a baseball bat when the police showed up while she and your kids cowered inside? That doesn't end well for people who weren't born with the inherent privileges you were. It's ironic that I've read indirectly racist comments from you about young black men who lost their lives during encounters with police. Sure, maybe they were selling a loosie or standing on a corner, but how could you become so callous and out of touch given what you went through and all the second chances that you've had?

Anyways, I'm not here to try to win some message board chat; honestly, your posts in this thread only make me feel sad for you... and I'm not part of the "echo chamber" you think that you're enlightening with your right wing takes. And, I'm sorry that your addiction and personal demons derailed your life and career. My only point is that nothing Trump has ever done or will ever purport to do (or lie about doing) is ever going to make your life better. You aren't winning. You already lost many years ago, and I hope that you'll take that knowledge and use it to make your personal life as fulfilling and happy as it can be and to try to live with some empathy and compassion for others who are also struggling in varying and complicated ways that we can never truly understand as outsiders.

Also, the juxtaposition of "all times have always been a southern gentlemen, particularly with women" and an overtly ugly misogynist comment like "PMSNBC" only really highlights the disconnect between who you THINK you are and who YOU REALLY ARE. Embrace the reality of it, stop projecting blame onto a society and economy that has largely left you behind, and try to be a better person during your remaining days.

Thanks for the analysis. You have been reading. Correction about the bat story. The reason why I violated the restraining order that evening was because my ex refused to let me tell the boys goodnight over the phone. I had just received a Louisville Slugger bat with my name on it as a gift from a law  school classmate. I wanted to show it to the boys. There was never at any time any direct, indirect, overt or covert threats of any harm whatsoever. When the ADA saw the bat, he immediately dropped the felony charges, and to get it over with that day, so that I could return to California, I pled guilty to a count of disturbing the peace and one count of telephone harassment, both of which are misdemeanors. I got probation, which they commuted after one year.

I will take what you say, which was sad sincerely and in a polite way (which I deeply appreciate), under advisement. You may well be right about a couple of things.

381
I am sad to say that you are extending him a line of credit for which he does not qualify. He attended law school at LSU. At some point thereafter he found his way to Georgetown where he received some sort of estate planning certificate.

It was an advanced law degree, an LL.M.

382
Enough to get disbarred. In Louisiana.

Wrong. Fuck off, you little weasel.

383
How many woman did you assault when you were high?

Zero, even when I wasn't high.

384
Congrats on being a racist rapist enabler. The women in your life must be so proud.

Fuck off, Mark. I'm neither a racist nor a rapist enabler. In fact, my wife is proud of me, and she backs Judge Kavanaugh despite herself having been the victim of sexual assault. Decades old charges where the complainant is fuzzy on the facts are just flimsy charges. And none of your so-called victims alleged that Judge Kavanaugh actually raped them.

Alright you hypocritical libtard apologists, I maintain that anyone who voted for President Clinton after clear actual rape allegations against him is a rapist enabler. Welcome to the club.

385
I'm curious: leaving aside the fact that you love that the pick pisses us off, do you genuinely believe that Kavanaugh is fit to sit on the Supreme Court?

Without question, Judge Kavanaugh is fit to serve on the Supreme Court. The ABA agreed with me about that.

386
Welp. This thread escalated quickly.  So Happy who rails on Hillary, is a disbarred drunk with a history of sexual assault?

First of all, do your research. It's on the internet. I was not disbarred. I was never even threatened withh that. I am a recovering drug addict (I've been very honest about that here, and it's given me the opportunity to work with and help a few OWA folks who privately self-admitted a substance abuse problem-that's why I am public about it-to help others), and I was suspended for three years in large part because of that. The suspension ended in 2009. I have been eligible for reinstatement since then. Given that I was living in California in 2009, and I have no plans to ever practice law again or go back to Louisiana, I've never sought reinstatement. But I've been eligible to do so for almost ten years, folks.

Even when joking, the sexual assault comments crossed the line between humor and mean-spiritedness. I can understand Judge (soon to be Justice) Kavanaugh's anger when confronted with such baseless allegations. I am, and at all times have always been, a Southern gentleman, particularly with women. I deeply resent even your rude and snide, baseless comments about sexual assault.

I take on you sorry bastards because you're living in an echo chamber that bears no resenblance to reality. I get PM's from people indicating that I'm not alone in my beliefs, but others are too scared to take on your rude, snide gauntlet. Well, I'm not. Even at 58, I can still whip most of your asses. Now, go back to PMSNBC or whereever else you get your "news."

The thing that strikes me as funny is that as intelligent as most of you people are (Navin notwithstanding-you're an idiot), not one of you has demonstrated one iota of understanding why President Trump won. There's a significant percentage of people in this country who think differently than you, and these people vote.

President Trump has accomplished a lot in less than two years. All-time stock market highs. Record low unemployment. Got rid of NAFTA. Standing up to China. Progress with North Korea (President Trump arranged for the bodies of Korean Conflict veterans, something your hero, President Obama, or the rapist in chief, or even the sorry-ass Bushes didn't and couldn't do). I believe that he'll be reelected in 2020.

Finally, I want to thank you libtards for so vociferously challenging Judge Kavanaugh so close to the mid-term elections because it's energized the base. I believe that the Republicans will retain both the House and the Senate, while you geniuses remain stuck with Chuckie Schmucky Schumer, Crazy Nancy Pelosi, Pocohantas and, last but certainly not least, Comrade Feinstein. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The above paragraph deserves additional commendation to the reader.

Also, I enjoy being lectured on the evils of the UN by a fuckwit who does not own a passport.

What in the wide world of sports does not having a passport have to do with one's ability to see the UN for what it is: an anti-Semitic, jealous group of socialists who are constantly trying to get our money and our sovreignty. At its inception, given the nature of the world at that point, the UN made sense. But not anymore. Most of the member countries are lawless hamlets anyway and aren't worth saving. I read a blog post he linked to from his Facebook account where he basically said the same thing. I don't think he is kidding.

The threats have come from the left. I wrote that the left hasn't played the violence game to its ultimate conclusion. Those on the right have a much higher incidence of gun ownership, which is why the left is so hellbent on gun control. Of course, if things deteriorate, the miltary is strongly pro-right and is unlikely to back the left. Simply put, the left can't win the game that it says it wants to play. I don't want a civil war, but, sadly, it's a distinct possibility.

The economy is doing great. We got a tax cut, and another one is promised soon. I love Justice Gorsuch and can't wait until Judge Cavenaugh is confirmed.

I don't quibble with most of what you all write in your little pathetic liberal echo chamber, but I read it all. You guys are delusional. The Republicans are going to hold onto control of the Congress. Resume your attacks. You're tilting at windmills. The bottom line is that the current iteration of the Democrat Party has become a marginalized, obtuse party of no without any real good ideas to advance the country. The Democrat Party is the party of Planned Parenthood, Antifa, gun control and the socialist resistance movement. One thing is clear, and that is the rumblings of civil disobedience and rioting are nothing to be taken seriously. Very few libs are armed with anything more than a megaphone, while ther opposition is armed to the teeth. I like our chances.

Wow. Dude is 23 and isn't the best player in baseball. Yeah let's trade him. Come on man.

Yeah Carlos is not playing great right now but lets not forget that he was a top 5 player in baseball before his injury last season and was good after coming back. His defense has improved and while he'll never be a great defensive player, he doesnt hurt you there.

Just because he isn't Lindor, doesnt mean you trade a Carlos Correa. And if you actually look at the career numbers to this point, the two are very similar.

Lindor has a career slash line of

.293/.354/.491/.845

Correa's career slash line is

.281/.360/.488/.848

On offense, it's a wash.

"James harden isn't the best player in the league and we could get a haul for him so we should trade him"

You dont trade a guy for being really really good but not the best in the league. That's fucking stupid.

Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk

Sigh. We have two big league SSs. You think that it's "fucking stupid" to consider trading one to get help at some other spots? Really. Alright, let me ask you this, smart guy: would you trade Correa or Bregman if it made sense to move either one? If forced to move one, I'd trade Correa and keep Bregman.  I'm not proposing some insane move a la Tod the Bod. I wouldn't just trade Correa willy nilly. I trust Luhnow to get value for him if a deal made sense. I merely suggested that it was worthy of consideration.

Frankly, your quick and dirty slash line comparison is incomplete to say the very least because it doesn't show Lindor's true value. In fact, it's fucking stupid to use your parlance. Lindor has already scored 103 runs out of the leadoff spot, and he's on pace to drive in more than 100 runs and steal about 25 bags while hitting 35 homers. Those are All-Star numbers. Monster numbers. Almost A-Rod numbers. Lindor hit 33 dingers last year. Correa tops out at 24 long balls and hasn't driven in 100 (did hit 96) while hitting out of the clean up spot.  For you stat geeks, Lindor also has a higher career WAR than Correa. A wash, you say? The numbers say otherwise.

James Harden? WTF I'm not suggesting that we trade Correa because he's not the best SS in baseball. I'm not even suggesting thatt we absolutely move Correa. I merely said that the front office should be open to the possibility of trading him if it made sense and improved the club.

406
Talk Zone / Re: Aches and Pains 2018
« on: August 22, 2018, 01:20:03 am »
That may be.  But Correa is still not hitting, be it because of back problems, knee problems, or because Jobu is on vacation.  Results matter.

Correa had a great April and a decent June. That's it. Correa is only hitting .239 (before tonight's game) against righties, which is troubling.

I think that it's time to consider making Bregman the SS and trading Correa, who would fetch a huge price, easily a proven bat or a lockdown closer, and a prospect or two.

I watch Frankie Lindor play almost every night. Frankly, Correa isn't in Lindor's league. Lindor is a better overall hitter, better power hitter, better baserunner, better run producer and better fielder and a switch hitter to boot. I think that Bregman is a better SS right now than Correa. Correa drew comparisons to A-Rod when drafted. Candidly, he's come nowhere close to that comparison, which probably was grossly unfair to Correa. Lindor compares much more favorably to A-Rod, at least in numbers, but even his numbers are much lower than A-Rod's. Simply put, A-Rod was the Mike Trout of his generation.

In my opinion, Ground Control should at least countenance the possibility of trading Correa, probably in the off-season. He's obviously a great kid and a good clubhouse guy, and I'd hate to see him go. However, business is business. Oakland and Seattle are relentless. Our margin for error in repeating is miniscule. Luhnow et al. have to consider every realistic possibility to improve the club, which needs production out of LF and a lockdown closer badly.

I was going to respond to this but just asked myself why. The moral high ground is too steep for me to climb. I know what redemption is and believe in second chances. Those who are remorseful and contrite and who sincerely seek forgiveness and an opportunity will earn their second chance every day of their lives.

I am trying hard not to comment on the smug moral superiority and rush to judgment I see. He apparently did a bad thing and has been punished. None of us knows what happened. He, like my daughter, deserves a chance to atone and to be forgiven. He, like my daughter, deserves the opportunity to become the kind of person he should be. Perhaps the Houston Astros will help him in his endeavor. If he, like my daughter, has not truly changed, he will lose his job and be punished again.

I, for one, am going to wait, watch, and hope his remorse and contrition are real. I will hope fervently his changes, like my daughter’s, are permanent. If they are, he has my unqualified support.

My attitude no doubt is greatly influenced by personal experience. If you ever live through a similar experience, God forbid, perhaps you will better understand.

Here's my unprofessional scouting report.

Perez started. Lots of swings and misses off his Curve.  Consistent 95
First hit in the 5th. Three straight for two runs.

Hooks not patient at the plate.  57 pitches through 5 innings.  Definitely made for a fast game.

Adcock pitched other 4.   Nothing seemed special but he did a great job of going scoreless.

Quintana got hit by a pitch of adcock's. Not sure where but it seemed like it hurt bad.  Stayed in the game.

Wrenn. Runs hard and takes chances. Makes the defense make plays -thankfully was safe on his double.

Midland had a player named Skye bolt. Just thought it was an interesting name.

Bracewell pitched for the hounds. Did a good job.   Seemed to be in the zone all night though.

3 scouts. One in a Toronto shirt. Just an observation. I don't know if they were watching anyone in particular.

You know the old saw about good teams being strong up the middle? Well, our C, SS, and 2B are all on the DL. Springer should be afraid. Very afraid.

These are the times that try fans’ souls. Do not bail on this team.

Not going anywhere. There was a point last season where we were down a few starting pitchers and persevered. I have faith in Luhnow and Co. to get what we need.

I really like the move. Luhnow got a good, established catcher, which is a position of concern if another injury occurred, in exchange for currency, i.e., a prospect and some international pool money. Very safe and prudent move.

James looks to be a STUD!   I would rate him directly below Whitley at the moment and would not give him up for a rental.   Striking out 10+ per game is amazing - although his best spot may end up being in the bullpen

This is just a bit of a stretch. James is a good AAA pitcher, but he may just be a AAAA pitcher. Whitley, on the other hand, has the tools to be a no. 1-2 starter.

All four of those guys could represent a better package than the O’s got for Machado.

I trust Luhnow to make the right call. Personally, I’m not that excited about Britton, but I’ll be enthused to add a lefty arm to the bullpen that has the imprimatur of the Astros front office if the FO decides to pull the trigger on him.

My guess is that the Astros will not overpay for ZB and will make a move for an arm that hasn’t been widely rumored.

Touche', you little dickhead.

I’m honestly less interested in whether Happy can practice law than I am if he is a birther.   Mr Happy do you think Seth Rich was murdered by the DNC?  Is Obama not a US citizen? Did the President order JADE HELM.  Is Alex Jones really Bill Hicks?

These are the real issues.

Birther?/U.S. citizen Thus far, I've not been convinced that President Obama was born in Kenya or anywhere other than Hawaii. However, there are some peculiarities around Hawaii's handling of his birth certificate that concern me. However, this is no longer a big issue.

Seth Jones murder: He was clearly professionally hit, and one must ask why and who did it? He was leaking information, which could have been the raison d'etre for his murder. Do I think that the DNC ordered the hit? I really don't know and haven't seen any evidence to support such an allegation. However, what seems clear from Donna Brazile's actions and tell-all book that the Clintons were in control of the DNC up until fairly recently. People have a strange way of dying around the Clintons, so if it turns out to be true, it won't surprise me.

Alex Jones: Controversial figure. He likes to be controversial, so I really don't listen much to what he has to say.

Jade Helm: It appears to have been simply a joint military operation. I don't see any truth in all of the rumors, some of which are downright nutty.

434
There's a lot of parsing here.  I have a license to practice insurance, so I can call myself an insurance agent.  If I don't keep up my license, I can't represent anyone until I get it back.  I can spin not having a license however the fuck I want but, if I try to represent an insured in a transaction as an agent, I'm breaking the law.

You say, amid a blizzard of technobabble, that you do not have an active license to practice law.  If you tried to represent someone as a lawyer, you would be breaking the law too.

I used to have a pilot's license; want to jump in a plane with me tomorrow?  I can call myself a pilot if it makes you feel safer.

If I attempted to represent a client now, I could be disciplined by the same court that suspended me. It also will be an act of barratry, which is against the law in most jurisdictions. I merely pointed out that I still have duties and obligations to the bar, which is inconsistent with being a former lawyer. I'm still obligated to follow the Rules of Professional Conduct. What you see as technobabble actually is a factually accurate depiction of my situation.

435
Still sounds like a former attorney.  Right now, you cannot practice law - as I understand it - since you are not currently licensed in any state.  I know a lot of people with law degrees that do not practice law.  But a lot of people can be former whatever.

This may be splitting hairs to you, but it's very much my reality. I view those who have voluntarily retired and surrendered their licenses and those disbarred to be former lawyers. As I said, I've been able to go back for over nine years, and I explained why I haven't thus far.  I'm still required to report my address changes and other contact information to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court still considers me a lawyer. I'm still required to be a non dues paying member of the Louisiana State Bar Association. In fact, should I decide to permanently retire, I have to ask permission from the Supreme Court. Therefore, I am still a lawyer,  just without an active, good standing license.

436

Former attorney.

Wrong. Technically, my suspension ended on January 11, 2009, over nine years ago. It's on the internet. I've been eligible for reinstatement since then. I've chosen, at least for now, not to seek reinstatement for several reasons. First, I've got no intention to ever practice again. Second, I've not lived in Louisiana since 2007, and I have no intention to ever return. Third, if I'm not going to practice, why pay dues to the bar association (over $1,000 a year for regular dues and specialization fees)  or maintain CPE (not that doing so was ever a problem for me given the amount of speaking and writing that I do)? In short, it's just not necessary. Maybe one day I will. But I wouldn't bet on it.

437
Can one of you republican/Trumpkins explain why this investigation needs to WRAP THE HELL UP, like Trey Gowdy is demanding?

The investigation has backfired and revealed willful intent on the part of scumbags like Rod Rosenstein, Andrew McCabe and James Comey to adversely affect a candidate for president of the United States. This isn't a coup d'etat, but it's getting damn close. When Strzok said that he'd personally prevent Mr. Trump from becoming president and then acted on it, in my opinion, he crossed the line of criminality.

438
And people who have no problems with locking babies in cages will have no problem with pushing an old lady down the stairs.

This is such horseshit on many different levels. First, prior presidents engaged in this practice. The pictures while President Obama was in office are undeniable. President Trump actually acted unilaterally to end the practice, and several of your helpful comrades complained that he lacked the authority to do the very thing about which they were complaining! Will anything he does ever make you happy?  And to baldly accuse the other side of murderous intent and capability is laughable, hypocritical and sad, particularly since the string of deaths around the Clintons is so long.

I think there's a lot of great info in the article, although I disagree with the implication that the goal is to hit like Joey fucking Gallo. I can't think of a situation where I'd not rather have, say, Alex Bregman at the plate instead of Gallo. \

The article also made me wonder, given how many balls now are being hit to the outfield rather than on the ground (and I think it will keep going up), if the Astros might focus even more on outfielders with superior defense.

What's the difference from a hitting standpoint between Joey Gallo and Chris Carter? I agree wth you that I'd far prefer Bregman at the plate.

On my really good McCallum team Mark’s senior year (The Improbable Odyssey), one of our hitting coaches was David Lowery who has played at UT and several years in the Rangers organization. Early in the year he said this to our team: “You cannot hit a curve ball. I cannot hit a curve ball. No one can hit a curve ball. We are going to look for fast balls and hit them.”

Out team BA was over .300 in a 31-game season which included a trip to the State Tournament.
That reminds me of Joe Morgan’s description of the difference between a curve ball and a motherfucking curve ball in Ball Four.

I love the analytics behind the changing swings in MLB over the last few years.  And, I'll love watching the process of MLB pitchers opposing with increasingly effective countermeasures (like going up the ladder) over time as well.  It's one of the things that makes baseball, watched over a length of seasons, so enjoyable for me.

I figured I would be hearing from you.

The rule has been in place forever. I get that sometime the pitcher has to snap off something special to pick up a teammate. However, most unearned runs aren't the pitcher's fault. When you're forced to get more than three outs in an inning, sometimes fatigue gets you, and you make a mistake with a pitch, that does nothing but exacerbate the situation.

Talk Zone / Re: Free Agents
« on: March 13, 2018, 01:38:13 pm »
It's precisely because long-term contracts haven't worked out that there'll be a huge fight. League revenue isn't going down. The teams have the money to pay veteran free agents, they've just realized they aren't great investments compared to cheap youngsters. If the players are going to maintain their share of increasing revenues, they'll have to fight for a new system where younger players get paid more. Earlier free agency, earlier arbitration, and a higher league minimum would make young players (1) better compensated and (2) less of a bargain compared to free agents. The players will have to go to war to get concessions like that. They've negotiated themselves into a terrible position, and I think they're starting to realize what it'll take to get out of it.

The real fight will be between the younger players and the established players. The players union's reps have sold the younger players down the river to benefit the older players. Perhaps if membership in the players union was expanded past the active roster, perhaps to the 40-man roster, the younger players could gain some control over their destiny.

The system worked exactly as designed.  He declined a QO, and offered his services on the open market for whatever rate he could negotiate.  That's precisely what players and agents want...the market to determine their value.  It worked to perfection.

Remember when The Lip was sick for a few weeks in his only season with the Astros, and Gomez managed the club. IIRC, they had a great record (like 12-1), so they gave the permanent job to Gomez when The Lip retired. Poor reason for a decision, but that was good ole Spec.

Absolutely - just as the road to the World Series runs through Houston.

I’m still amazed that Cobb, Lynn and Lucroy are unsigned. Arrieta I can understand because of how much he money he wants.

Lucroy’s skills may be diminished somewhat but he is a quality catcher. Those just don’t  grow on trees. Is there something about him, perhaps off the field, that has teams reluctant? Is he bad in the locker room??

If the Twins wanted to be bold, they should take the money they were going to throw at Darvish and sign Cobb AND Lynn. Pair them with Berrios and Santana when he comes back and they can certainly will the central.

The Indians rotation is better than that hypothetical rotation. In my opinion, the road to the AL Central runs through Cleveland.

I don't think that 2 warmup pitches for relievers is a good idea. No matter how warm you are from the 'pen the game mound has a different feel. Particularly if you are a visiting pitcher not used to the mound.

I don't think that two warmup tosses is enough for anyone, but the right number depends upon the guy and the number of innings/pitches thrown. Eight is an arbitrary number that has worked satisfactorially for a while. I'd hesitate about changing it. Perhaps allow the pitcher to voluntarily surrender some warmup tosses.

Put me in the list of people who do not give a damn about how long games last.

I know that I'm outnumbered. Respectfully, you folks are in your own little echo chamber, and I suggest that you're out of touch with the American people. I've stayed out of the Angell thread to give you all a safe space to spew your venom against the President, who, frankly, has been kicking your asses politically because he's in touch with the average American.

Below is taken from a Democrat Party platform. Query why a photo license ID should be required when you fight it for voting? I'd agree on the photo ID for gun purchases if you all would agree to voter ID laws. The background check concerns me because of the subjectivity of it. Who determines that?

The mental health test, while not in the platform below, has been bandied about by Democrats recently, also concerns me. Could I, a recovering drug addict and a bipolar person, buy a gun? Who is mentally ill? I believe that it could be easily politicized by a partisan government. The same for the gun safety test. The Second Amendment doesn't say that you can bear those arms that the government says you can; it says that the right to bear arms can't be infringed. Period.

Democrats passed the Brady Law and the Assault Weapons Ban. We increased federal, state, and local gun crime prosecution by 22 percent since 1992. Now gun crime is down by 35 percent. Now we must do even more. We need mandatory child safety locks. We should require a photo license I.D., a background check, and a gun safety test to buy a new handgun. We support more federal gun prosecutors and giving states and communities another 10,000 prosecutors to fight gun crime. [emphasis added]

Signing with SF. I never saw any printed interest by the Astros. Wonder why?

This article points to Mark Melancon as the reason.

This could be copied and pasted in response to pretty much any Mr. Happy political post.

Fuck off, sonny boy. I was writing legislation that was enacted when you were still in diapers.
