Beer and Queso / Re: San Diego Recs
« on: July 12, 2012, 12:40:42 pm »Thanks for all of the recs!
Our plan right now is pretty much...
Friday - afternoon wine tour in La Jolla
Saturday - Zoo, and maybe dinner at Sanska's
Sunday - afternoon Brewery tour (Stone, San Marcos, Lost Abbey)
Monday - Gaslamp and Astros game that evening
I suspect we'll fill in some of those blanks with aforementioned restaurants, and the rest with brewpubs (for me) and shopping (for her).
Any opinions on these spots?
O’Briens Pub (http://www.obrienspub.net/)
Toronado
Blind Lady Ale House (http://www.blindladyalehouse.com/)
Downtown Johnny Brown’s (http://downtownjohnnybrowns.com/)
Hamilton Tavern (http://hamiltonstavern.com/)
Luigi’s at the Beach (http://www.luigisatthebeach.com/)
Neighborhood (http://www.neighborhoodsd.com/index.php)
FWIW... the Astros are 2-1 in games I have seen them play outside of Texas, so I'm hoping that counters the awful road record this season.
Great beer selections at O'Briens and Toronado, similar at Blind Lady and Hamiltons. Just a matter of preferred environment. O'Briens is in a strip mall, so it's pretty relaxed, but not much to do around it (unless you're looking for Asian food)-- it's really all about just coming to enjoy quality beer. Toronado is on 30th street, so a more active environment, but can also get loud and crowded. I frequent and enjoy these two all the time. Blind Lady, I've only been to once, seemed a little more upscale, a lot trendier. I've only been to Hamiltons during midday, so don't know what it's like at night.

I like to take people to Hash House for breakfast/brunch.
There are a lot of breweries to check out, tour, taste. My favorite beer-wise is probably Alpine, though it's a bit of a drive.
Torrey Pines state park has some scenic hiking trails. Down the road is the Gliderport and Black's Beach, if you're into hang-gliding over nudists.

« on: July 31, 2011, 11:29:54 pm »BS. This is the same false dichotomy we hear all the time ... Obviously they should try to win chamoionships, but only in the context of trying to win every game they can. To take the opposite view would simply mean they should throw every game to ensure they get a string of #1 draft choices. Play to win. Now. Every game. All the time. When you end up with a guy who is rare-to-unique and he helps you win, hang on to him. Go ahead and trade the replaceable RF who can't hit the cut-off man anyway; next year's version will probably be about as good (if not better). But there are about to be a lot more triples with new life at MMPUS now.
False dichotomy... ?
Throwing every game, doesn't seem particularly conducive toward player development. Unless you're the Spurs.
"Play to win. Now. Every game. All the time." Great platitudes, kind of disjointed from reality for managers and front office, but pretty cool if you read them in William Wallace's voice.
In 1990 do you trade Larry Andersen?

Agree, he's a great player. But I think the organization should be out to win championships, and if Bourn isn't going to be a piece in that because of all the other personnel deficiencies, I think it makes sense to trade him to address those.

I like the pick, but that + chatter about a long swing are concerning. 70 strikeouts last season vs. mediocre Big East pitching suggests some roughness.

« on: June 04, 2011, 12:27:05 am »BA's "Experts Draft 2.0" (LINK)
BA's caveat: This isn't a projection of how the first round will play out, but rather who editor John Manuel, executive editor Jim Callis and assistant editors Conor Glassey and Nathan Rode would prefer for picks 1-33. We changed the order up from our original experts draft, and the four experts alternated choices throughout the first round while taking into account each club's needs and financial situation.
And for the Good Guys:
11. ASTROS (John): Jim just ruined my fantasy of getting Jungmann at 11. It's disappointing, but I'll find a way to move on by taking Connecticut righthander Matt Barnes. He's the kind of high-upside player Bobby Heck and his staff have focused on in recent years, and has dominated from start to finish in 2011. I could also see taking Sonny Gray, Jed Bradley or South Carolina prep righty Taylor Guerrieri here, but to me Barnes has upside and will get to the majors quickly. With a team as needy as the one in Houston, that should be a consideration when other factors are fairly equal.
Note: BA had Lindor at 8 (Indians), Archie Bradley at 9 (Cubs), and Jungmann at 10 (Padres).
Barnes didn't do much to help his stock tonight, getting pounded by a so-so Coastal Carolina team to the tune of 7 ER on 9 H in 4.1 IP.

It was actually the same ankle.
The furthest I think I've seen him slip is to like #4.
He's started to hit the ball with more authority the last two weeks, and played in the field some, which should allay some concerns over his shoulder (though there remains no real info about what's up there).

Quick one tonight.. Rice vs. A&M took all of 1 hour, 45 minutes to play. Two exceptional pitchers, Michael Wacha for A&M, the top prospect in the state right now for the 2012 draft, and Austin Kubitza, a 7th round pick last year with a fastball that's movement grades a full 80, combine for 16 IP, 1 ER, 11 hits, 14 K.

Strong start by the Cardinal in game 1. Appel comes out throwing 98, 99 the first two innings before settling in at 93, 94. Rendon goes 0-4, I think he's still a little behind after missing so much time due to his broken ankle from the previous summer. Diekroeger goes 2-4 and catalyzes their first two scoring innings.

« on: February 17, 2011, 08:32:53 pm »
There's a ton of young talent in this game, highlighted of course by Anthony Rendon, who would have gone #1 overall in the 2010 MLB draft. Stanford's coach just called him college's Joe DiMaggio. Last season he had 26 HR's, and only 22 BB's. An amazing talent.
Stanford has put together some monster recruiting classes the past few years, including: SS Kenny Diekroeger is a potential #1 overall selection for the 2012 MLB draft, RHP Mark Appel who will start Friday afternoon and flashes 94-98 MPH heat, and Austin Wilson, who made BA's preseason All-America team as a freshman.
Rice will start a couple highly talented freshmen RHP that passed up huge signing bonuses to play college ball, local product John Simms, and Colleyville hurler Austin Kubitza.
Should be some great baseball with some players that will be future household names.

And the Astros had to have a ML ready pitcher in the trade to have 5 pitchers this year? Huh? Are the Stros playing for anything this year?

What the Astros don't have on paper anyway are a lot of prospects with high ceilings. They have a number of mid-level prospects. Prospects that can be used in trade, as we've seen, and can have good major league careers. Prospects that won't get much pub because they don't hit .350 with .600 slg or strike out a ton of batters. In other words there are several good players at AA and AAA who can be brought up some time soon to compliment the veterans and more experienced younger players and expect to contribute. Just none with the stats or radar gun numbers to grab the expurts' attention.
Do you think we have more of these types of prospects than most organizations, to sort of compensate for the lack of 'high-ceiling' prospects?

The game on Saturday night is one to check out. Alex Wilson from the Aggies is a great prospect that works in the mid-upper 90's. He's coming off of TJ surgery, but was dominant in his first start this year. He'll be throwing that night against Rice, per A&M's coach.
The other pitcher to check out at the MMC is Gerrit Cole, freshman RHP from UCLA who was drafted in the first round this year but chose the Bruins over the Yankees. 6IP 1H in his first start this year.

In September, 2006, Palin showed up in Ketchikan on her gubernatorial campaign and said the bridge was essential for the town's prosperity.
and
The Alaska governor campaigned in 2006 on a build-the-bridge platform, telling Ketchikan residents she felt their pain when politicians called them "nowhere." They're still feeling pain today in Ketchikan, over Palin's subsequent decision to use the bridge funds for other projects -- and over the timing of her announcement, which they say came in a pre-dawn press release that seemed aimed at national news deadlines.
"I think that's when the campaign for national office began," said Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein on Saturday.
http://www.adn.com/sarahpalin/story/511471.html
I think you guys covered the bridge, but re: earmarks in general..
Here's what she says:
Quote
In the nationally televised speech, she stood by McCain and said, "I've championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. In fact, I told Congress thanks, but no thanks, on that bridge to nowhere. If our state wanted a bridge, I said, we'd build it ourselves."
And here's her record:
Quote
Wasilla had received few if any earmarks before Palin became mayor. She actively sought federal funds -- a campaign that began to pay off only after she hired a lobbyist with close ties to Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), who long controlled federal spending as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He made funneling money to Alaska his hallmark.
Quote
This year, Palin, who has been governor for nearly 22 months, defended earmarking as a vital part of the legislative system. "The federal budget, in its various manifestations, is incredibly important to us, and congressional earmarks are one aspect of this relationship," she wrote in a newspaper column.
Quote
This year she submitted to Congress a list of Alaska projects worth $197.8 million, including $2 million to research crab productivity in the Bering Sea and $7.4 million to improve runway lighting at eight Alaska airports. A spokesman said she cut the original list of 54 projects to 31.
"So while Sen. McCain was going after cutting earmarks in Washington," said Steve Ellis of Taxpayers for Common Sense, "Gov. Palin was going after getting earmarks."

But I'll say it again, BA is not scouts, it's a bunch of guys who have watched baseball and make their own judgements when they do watch video. But they need to talk to scouts more and that is something they don't do much of at all. They'd rather provide what they do best (which is not unwelcomed, it's really great stuff if you *know* what you're looking at): performance statical analysis.
Yes, I'm aware college players use metal bats outside of the wood-bat summer leagues, and yes you're starting to repeat yourself.
I'm not a huge fan of BA, but in their defense they do a lot more than just statistical analysis. They're at their best when they serve as a conduit between the opinions of coaches/scouting directors and a public eager to hear about the next generation baseball has to offer.

Is Smoak a below average fielder? I thought I read his hands were pretty good, and SC fans always spoke highly of his defense.
If he's blocked in Houston, you would think it would be pretty easy to find someone out there willing to trade for a switch hitter projected to put up big power numbers.

I think Augie's a good coach, but doesn't he leave the handling of the pitching staff nearly entirely up to the pitching coach? Given that the UT teams were so successful earlier this decade because of their great pitching, who really deserves the credit.. ?
Unsurprisingly, telling 12 bench players they were at fault for UT's recent struggles and wouldn't be allowed to suit up didn't seem to help the Longhorns this past weekend.

I don't have any problems with this deal, personally. My mind is open to hearing otherwise, but I don't get the angst over who we lost. Neither Scott nor Sarfate are anything special. Costanzo is a big ? as to how his swing will play out at the ML level. Albers will have to improve quite a bit from last season to help the team this year. And Patton, while a nice prospect, doesn't seem to have the stuff nor have put up strong numbers of late to suggest he's destined for stardom anytime soon.
There's a general principle that the team who gets the best player gets the better of a deal, and I think that's probably most applicable here, where you're getting a fairly unique talent for 5 guys that strike me as.. well, ordinary and replaceable.

Because McLane said he spoke to fans about these things, so he's basically speaking to them and disavowing a man's career in doing so. He cared very little about a good man and decided it was more important to speak to the vocal majority or minority to placate them. Sad that you agree with this, but that's your right.
Sorry, I don't see anything wrong with an owner explaining to his fanbase why he's made a major personnel move. These are public figures, open to constant evaluation. McLane also has a vested interest in appearing sympathetic to those who fill his coffers, so I think you'll just have to accept that.. Does that make me a classless asshole? No, the fact that I like to intimidate the elderly does.
Disavowing a man's career and caring very little about a good man seems a little hyperbolic, don't you think? TP's future career will be dictated by his 14 years with the Astros, not a press conference that will be long forgotten within a week.

Yes, Noe. The context of everything I've been saying is that McLane is justified in publicly citing the draft shortcomings as a reason for TP's dismissal.
You're quite right, the draft was not done in a vacuum. But the grocer is well within reason to hold his GM accountable for putting him in a position where he'd have to inordinately stretch his wallet to sign these two kids.

Yeah, the outcome is irrelevant. It was a poor decision to utilize your first two draft picks on high-risk signs (which is what you would have to call trying to sign two high schoolers away from major college ball without any pre-draft agreement), when you've already lost your top two picks to FA signings. It would still be a poor decision, even if both the kids signed for slot value.
As you said, being wrong and didn't work are two different things. This is one case where they unfortunately overlapped.

Yes. He said as much. He also said he'd probably re-think that sort of strategy from now on and focus on College kids. So what's your point? No one ever disputed this so why are you bringing this up?
Well, Noe, a couple posters prior to my response seemed to be expressing incredulity that anyone would blame TP for the lost picks. The only way I could fathom that is if TP wasn't the one who drafted them, and given that people seem to actually think TP was only McLane's puppet for the past 3 years, I wondered if perhaps that wasn't the case. Hence my two questions.
Given that we've established TP did draft them, the fact that people still want to absolve him of any responsibility for the outcome there still confuses me.

Talk Zone / Re: Scrap Iron is a Class Act.
« on: August 28, 2007, 08:26:47 pm »they did not "exercise leverage" either. they rolled the dice and lost. some genius advisor convinced them that they had the leverage to get first round money. now they are not playing pro ball and must wait for another draft and hope that they do not harm their reputation as players.
you think Kyle Russell exercised leverage by going back to school?
bullshit.
The Astros lost, not these kids. They'll get a great college experience and the opportunity to play premium collegiate baseball, an experience I'd definitely value over the slot value of 3rd/4th round money. In three years they'll get another shot at pro baseball.
Russell had a ton of leverage as a draft-eligible sophomore, which is probably why there were rumors that the Cardinals gave into his signing demands the day of the deadline, even though he's never hit well with a wood bat and has such a long swing. Glad he's returning to UT, though.

Talk Zone / Re: Scrap Iron is a Class Act.
« on: August 28, 2007, 08:21:51 pm »End of discussion? Not quite. Explain, if you can, why Purpura didn't just pay these 3rd and 4th slots, 1st slot money, and inflated 1st slot money at that. It's not his money. It's not coming out of his pocket.
I don't know why he didn't pay them. I'm not an Astros brass, so I haven't a clue. Perhaps because he wasn't authorized the money. More likely because they weren't worth that much money. Perhaps both. I have no problem with the decision not to pay them what they were asking for, none at all.
My complaint stems from using these two picks on kids that can tell you to piss off and go play major college baseball in the ACC and SEC. You'd better be damn well sure you can sign them if you're going to use early round picks on kids with that kind of leverage. He wasn't, and that's something that should be on his hands. I know some people really like TP, but I don't see why that should preculde an objective analysis of his performance.

« on: August 27, 2007, 04:01:15 pm »Just how quickly do you think it takes a player to move from being drafted into the upper levels of the farm system to be able to provide help to the big club?
This is not football or basketball where just drafted personnel make immediate impact, except in the rarest of occassions.
The results of Purpuras drafts are still making their way up through the organization. The "even more depeleted" state is because of the firesale of minor league players in the Go For It All trade philosophy of the past several years. Coupled with the weak drafts that Pupura didnt make, and you have an organization waiting to implode.
The point being, this 3 years as seen by some as an eternity to "prove oneself", is not an acceptable time period to actually prove anything.
Yeah, I'm aware of how the farm system works, and I'm aware the farm system was already in pretty sorry states--although it at least included names such as Hirsh, Patton, Pence.. That depletion has only been further compounded by picks lost to FA signings or refusal to offer departing FA's arbitration, young players lost in the ill-conceived Jennings trade, and the inability to sign draft picks (it's TP's decision to emphasize signing HS players-- HS players with div 1 scholarships have a ton of draft day leverage). It also didn't help that he refused to trade failed starters like CQ for low level prospects, because of his insistance that they get someone that can help now in return.
If the farm system is weakened to help the club, that's one thing. But neither happened under TP. The team has gotten worse, and the farm system has gotten weaker. How much longer do the Astros really need to continue that pattern?

My criticism of BA's rankings, etc is that it's their opinion. They're sportswriters, not scouts or GMs. What they think is irrelevant. But, it is knee jerk because we don't know how each player is going to turn out. Baseball development is a crapshoot. To judge a draft the same year it's done is meaningless and an exercise in futility.
Lexington will be populated by a few hold overs from this year, most of the Tri-City roster, a few from Greeneville, and a FA signee or two.
Your criticism is what strikes me as knee jerk. BA relies heavily on input from scouts, from minor league and collegiate coaches, and team management, so it's silly to just write it off as 'their opinion'. I'm also pretty darn sure they're aware that the true worth of a draft won't reveal itself until 4-5 years later.. but that hardly prohibits one from evaluating on the work to date. The point of the draft is to add as much talent to your system as you can, and hope it pans out. The Astros added the least amount of talent to their system than any other team. They have had the worst draft so far.

Quite a few people trashed this trade because they thought Hirch alone would perform as well as Jennings could, at a tenth the cost. Guess they were wrong, he's outpitched him handily.

That is not what I am saying either. I wish folks would really try to understand what I actually say and not what they think I am saying. He's an average starter. Nothing great. And I don't base this on stats, I base it on what I saw last night. He is not mechanically sound, so teams need to adjust to him and once the league catches up to him, he's going to have to adjust as well. He doesn't really have the type of stuff that tells me he's going to be a top of the line starter.
So, are you a Tulane alumn?
Nah, not an alum of Tulane.. I just follow NCAA baseball closely.
You should perhaps think about how others will read your words. When you refer to the struggling D'backs and a rookie pitcher that has only lasted a short time his last few starts, 99% of people will infer that the Astros were shut down by a nobody that the rest of the league has been shelling. If both played their way into national seeds, I don't think the NCAA would hestitate to award both of them as hosts. But given that UH is a borderline #1/#2, and that Rice will most likely be a top 4 national seed, I don't see two regionals in Houston this year...

No way in hell the Braves trade Francouer this offseason. Not unless somebody drops the tailgate and rolls out a helluva' lot more than a defensive SS.
I'm always befuddled by suggestions that teams (other than Kansas City) might be willing to trade away high-profile, pre-arbitration talent. Unless they know it's overvalued in the market. See, e.g., Burke.
Is Francouer overvalued by the market? Maybe. If not, the Braves won't deal him. If so, then why would the Astros want him?
Yeah, I don't know how Francouer's name found its way into this thread. That's about as close to untouchable as they come.
They do have a couple of nice looking SS prospects though, it seems.

It's like literally adding wet noodle to your bat. Sure, it's lighter, but you ain't hitting the ball further.
The best hitters are those who can see the ball the longest-- and if a corked bat can speed up the bat and allow you to wait longer, while maintaining a virtually identical overall performance to a non-corked bat (per this guy's experimentation?), there would seem a significant advantage there.

Was Biggio that bad in centerfield? The consensus now seems to be that Biggio was a huge defensive liability in centerfield, but I remember that then the consensus hereabouts was that Biggio wasn't great in center, but he was at least adequate. When he moved to left, it was a different story, but in center people were fairly protective. I don't think at the time anyone would have replaced Biggio with a better defender with no bat. Maybe I remember things wrong.
You remember things correctly. It's kind of amusing to see the turnaround, particularly given their fervor at the time.
I don't know, my memory's not that good, and people changing their mind never bothers me much. I'd note for you, though, that while defensive numbers aren't very useful, they at least indicate that Biggio was fairly consistent in centerfield between 2004 and 2003. In 2003 he was getting .24826 put outs per inning, in 2004 in centerfield his number dropped to .235088. I guess that's a significant drop, but you're also talking about the difference between 1313 and 570 innings between the two seasons. I just don't remember it being anything anyone was particulary worried about at the time. I certainly didn't have the impression that Biggio's horrendous defensive nosedive between 2003 and 2004 was the reason we traded for Beltran, or something that we were talking about here, particularly. Interestingly, as I'd already posted, Taveras had 2.64753 put outs over 1254 innings, which is clearly better, but in 2002 Berkman had 2.39791 in centerfield, so you can make an argument that Biggio was a better defensive centerfielder in 2003 than Berkman in 2002, and wasn't significantly worse than Berkman in 2004. Beltran was much better than Biggio, with .2603 over 772 innings, but worse than Taveras. Biggio had 1 and 0 errors in 2003 and 2004 respectively, Berkman had 4 errors in 2002, and Beltran had 5 errors in 2004 in CF for the Astros. I don't know what the error numbers mean, but it probably brings Beltran's performance down a bit, and it makes Taveras's 3 errors over a lot more innings look pretty terrific. As an aside, I witnessed the most spectacular of those errors live and in person, so it kinda colors my opinion of Taveras.
Most interesting to me is what happens to Biggio when he moves to left: his put outs drop to .177289 with 9 errors over 570 innings. Interestingly, Berkman in the 2004 played 608.7 innings in left, and had a lower put-out rate, 1.52785, than Biggio, and I remember thinking that Berkman played left pretty well. Neither compares to Burke this year with .22 outs per inning. If the numbers have any meaning, that starts looking really good.
Course as I said, all of that becomes a bit suspect because you don't know whether comparing put outs per inning from year to year and player to player is really comparing apples to apples, but the numbers at least are pretty tangible, and they look right. Unlike most defensive numbers, there appears to be some real differences between them. And it seems at least something of a safe assumption that the number of chances is going to be reasonably comparable from year to year.
I don't have a problem with people changing their mind. I think it's a good sign, if people can be open-minded. I think Beltran opened a lot of eyes for some people, about how CF can be played.
Glad your numbers show fairly similar play from Bidge in 2003 and 2004. I thought he was a crummy CF both years.

I'm glad others had the same thought I had during the game, about PH'ing for WT. I think Garner did a great job all year, but I think he made a mistake there.
I can empathize with not wanting to take out a hitter who's running hot at the plate and who you'd like to keep in CF, but an inexperienced slap-hitter with poor plate discipline is the last thing you want in the box to face a wild (but veteran) pitcher with a runner on 3rd and one out. Palmeiro, particularly with his .500 lifetime BA against El Duque, would have been a great choice.

Holy shit, they really set the bar low for winning a league pennant this season. What's your evaluation of the White Sox? Somewhat above mediocre? Because the Astros were one timely hit, good pitch or defensive play away from winning all 4 of those games, and I would think the gulf between "best team in baseball" and "mediocre" would be a little wider than that.
Yeah, you need breaks to win it all. The Astros didn't get enough of them. The White Sox were a good team with some players running hot, that got plenty of breaks and took advantage of them. That'll translate into 11 wins in 12 games. I think there were a couple threads here talking about how the Sox were good, but nothing special.
