I'm pretty sure I read/heard that Crane is working on a lease extension.  And it makes sense.  The ballpark is still great and the ownership group and city have invested a lot of $$ in the real estate around it.  My opinion at this time is that Minute Maid should last forever.

I would love to see a new ballpark with upper decks that are on top of the field in one section of the stadium just for the sake of novelty.  MMP and the Rangers stadium kind of have it, but nothing like the Old Comiskey or Tiger Stadium.

This is a step in the right direction.  I'm pro pitch clock, but more importantly I think they just need to go back to keeping the batters in the box.  When they did that a few years ago with fines the game times dropped.  Then that initiative went away for whatever reason and game times went back up.  If you do this then the game flows quicker, and without the mound visits we avoid random stoppages of play.  My last request would be only 2 warm up pitches for relievers once they enter the game.

I went to the Rockets game last night, and even though I'd much rather go to an Astros game - at the Rockets game I was not constantly wondering how late I would be there.  Instead it was "wow the game is already in the 4th quarter?"  Baseball probably will never be like that, but I think the flow needs to improve.

For those who keep up with the sports media landscape - the aggressive growth strategy of the pay-for sports journalism website, The Athletic, has led to an MLB only site for Houston.  They have poached Kaplan from the Chronicle to be the beat writer.

I'll add that that call is the most honest emotion I've ever heard from Buck.  His voiced cracked at "at the wall."  He truly could not believe what he was seeing.

Neither could I.

As an aside, Buck's had a heck of a recent post-season.  The ALCS, World Series, crazy finish to Saints/Vikings.

Not to mention the 2017 Super Bowl and 2016 World Series.

We have had a helluva run of sports championships recently.  Nova buzzer beater a couple of years ago and the last two CFB Championship games have been excellent.

Buck's call of Altuve's homer is my favorite.  His tone is perfect.  His words says something else, but his tone is essentially saying "no fucking way is Altuve hitting a homer right now".

Actual words: "Flyball...left center field....at the wall(!) TIE GAME! UNBELIEVABLE"

Buck nailed almost every call except the series clincher, but even that's nitpicking.

Still working on my Astros shrine in the house.  An entire wall is being dedicated to images of Game 5.

I'm guessing the Astros are fine with starting the season with Giles and hoping that either he has a great year or, if he doesn't, then one of the young pitchers (Martes, Gustave, Paulino) separates themselves as an option to take over that role.  I know those guys seem like a long shot as closer right now, but I still think bullpens are fungible despite the recent free agent market demand for relievers.

Your point? I did not say the Astros should not pay. Verlander stayed home with the organization which drafted him and agonized almost too long in August over going to a much better situation. I do not think Keuchel will have the same loyalty Verlander did. “Show me the money.”

I’m just saying it’s not like Verlander gave Detroit a hometown discount. He got paid a record amount to stay with Detroit.  I’m sure Keuchel would do the same if Houston offered him a record setting contract.

The Astros have squeezed and will continue to squeeze as much value out of players for as little money as possible while they are under team control.  They have that ability to do so under the rules of baseball and I have and will continue to defend those moves even though a lot of people will use that as ammo that ownership is cheap.  On the flip side, when it’s time for the players to get paid, I will defend their right to make as much money as possible.  If Keuchel signs a huge deal with the Rangers then a lot of fans will disown him saying that all he cares about is money.  Well, we all care about money and we all have to make business decisions in our own lives. He’s taking advantage of one of the very few opportunities in professional baseball to control his own destiny.  I have no problem with that and will not be the guy who boos him at Minute Maid when he’s in the visiting team uniform.

I really like Morton a lot in just one season and Verlander, too, because of the person he is. I respect McCullers’ talent and hope he learned something this year, but I doubt i’ll ever like him, homegrown or not. I think he, like Keuchel, will chase the money. I would love to be wrong.

You do realize that Verlander's current contract was the highest contract ever for a pitcher at the time it was signed?

I don't think DK has a bad attitude.  He did speak openly about the lack of a deadline deal pre-Verlander, but other than that he has basically just worked hard and pitched well.

I don't know why anyone faults these guys for hiring Boras.  As fans, yes we hate him, but if you are a player why wouldn't you try to get the most money out of teams?  It's not like the Astros gave Keuchel more than he deserved in his arbitration years.  Look at what they gave Correa last year.

Baseball is a business...(no shit).

Well, if MLB follows Astros policy at all (to keep it closed if the temps are below 68°F), it should be closed all three nights although Sunday will be a little warmer.

Here's the temperature progression for the duration of the games (8pm --> 11pm)
Tonight:  56°F --> 51°F
Saturday:  56°F --> 50°F
Sunday:  60°F --> 56°F

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=29.7606&lon=-95.3697&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=graphical

These temperatures wouldn't bother me, but I realize I'm in the minority on this argument.

Outdoor baseball >>>> Indoor baseball.  And I really don't think there's any "dome" advantage.  The stadium gets extremely loud regardless of the roof being opened or closed.  Every year on Opening Day the stadium is loud and buzzing, and most years the roof is open.  That goes for the Texans, too.  One of the loudest games I've seen at NRG was MNF against the Titans with the roof open.

Not to mention Minute Maid just feels like a much better stadium setting with the roof open.

Does anyone else think these quick hooks are getting a little out of hand?  A lot of them are 50/50 calls but they are almost always leaning towards pulling the pitcher rather than leaving him in - including Hinch in the ALDS.  Last night the Nats pulled Scherzer after he gave up his first hit in the 7th inning and then the bullpen immediately gave up the lead.  Only in the 2017 baseball world does it make sense to take out a top 3 pitcher in the game when he is dealing his 98th pitch (and he's got his best stuff) to bring in a reliever.  There are only a handful of relievers in baseball I would do that for and the Nats don't have any of them.

That said, I feel like this trend is at its extreme and will swing back the other way.  Everyone is trying to recreate what the Indians did last year but most teams (including the Astros) don't have a bullpen of that caliber.

Anyways, that's my random rant...go Stros

It's so hard to compare parks these days.  They're almost all great, and a lot of times it feels like nitpicking trying to find differences.  I usually group my ballparks and rank within groups:

Classics
Wrigley/Fenway tied
Dodger Stadium
old Yankee Stadium

New Classics
AT&T
Camden Yards (it has been years, so my memory is fading a bit)
Minute Maid
Petco
Marlins Park (surprisingly impressive, but definitely has flaws)

New Cookie Cutter; Never Need to Go Back
new Busch Field
Nationals Park
whatever Rangers Stadium is called now
Turner Field

Parks I Want to See
PNC
Safeco
Target Field
Skydome

Based on all of Luhnow's recent quotes, I think this is where he's at on trading Tucker, Fisher, or Martes:  If he thinks a deal significantly improves this team's chances in a post-season series, he'll pull the trigger, even for a rental.  That's a fine line to walk.  But when a team is this good, you HAVE to give them every edge possible going into October.

Jonah Keri has a 1-hour interview up with Luhnow on his podcast and he gives a little insight into their deadline thinking.  My take after listening to it was that they are gifted this great season so there's no need to overpay for something to get them to the playoffs.  Once we get to the playoffs it's a crapshoot, so they are specifically analyzing that with the price of giving up guys who have a lot of future value - his example was Martes.  He basically said why trade for a starter when you have Martes who is developing as we speak, throws 97, and has plus secondary stuff and has 6 more years of control.

The great thing about this deadline is I trust whatever Luhnow does.

I'm in the bullpen camp, too, unless Keuchel and McCullers are seriously injured and this isn't a conservative approach to manage small injuries.

Look at what Cleveland did last year with Kluber and scrubs in the rotation.  Let's say we have Keuchel, McCullers, Morton, Musgrove/Martes/Fiers as our starting 4.  If any of those guys get off to a rocky start in one of their starts we go straight to Devo.  Then all of a sudden it's a bullpen game because with our offense we will never be out of a game.  Cleveland did the same thing last year with Andrew Miller.

The SP market is too underwhelming to trade Tucker, Bregman, Whitley, or Perez in my mind.  I would consider trading Perez or Whitley for a big time reliever, though.

Obviously the success of the team has a lot to do with this, but I don't think the regular season atmosphere at the stadium has ever been this fun.  Fans are loud and engaged...all in a responsible/non-NFL manner.  I also was pro-Tal's Hill, but the Astros did an incredible job with the CF renovations.  Exceeded expectations.

All of that said - can we please get a new song after the Astros score a run?  No. 2 by Blur is an ok song but it feels like we've heard that song for like 10 years straight after each run.  Maybe change it up a little bit?

I have been busy and haven't kept up too frequently here - but what is the consensus for you guys on in-season trade strategy?  I am now in the camp of preferring another strong bullpen arm over a starting pitcher.  Another SP would be nice but I don't want to give up Tucker or Whitley for Cueto, Quintana, or some other starter who is having a lackluster season.  Going into the playoffs with Keuchel, LMC, Morton, and either Fiers or Martes is a pretty formidable rotation...especially with our bats.

I love this move, which means he will probably be a bust.

I think everyone is overblowing how costly it is to get Watson.  If you like a QB you have to pay for it - there are no discounts except for the extremely rare exception of Tom Brady.  And when the price is a combination of draft picks, then you are essentially trading a combination of lottery tickets for a lottery ticket you think has better odds.  It's not like we are trading established productive players for a lottery ticket.  Draft picks are busts more often than they are not.

I've gone some years recently without looking at the standings.  This year I've been looking.  There's some weird stuff going on.

1.  The Rangers are the Astros' mirror image, and not in a good way.  Or in a really good way.

2.  Is the American League West weak?  I didn't expect it to be.

3.  What the hell is up with Toronto?  What the hell is up with Baltimore?

4.  One can only hope that the American League Central stays at .500 for the rest of the season.

I don't know why Baltimore always flies under the radar.  They have a lot of talent and have had recent success.

So in 2016, Minute Maid Park was the most pitcher friendly stadium in baseball, according the Park Factors ranking system.  After 2 games in 2017, we're seeing 6 total runs scored.

Yet when describing the new center field dimensions at Minute Maid changing from 436 to 409 feet on MLB Network this week, Harold Reynolds derisively declared, "Minute Maid is already a bandbox ... this is going to take it even further".

From Ron Kruk to Harold Reynolds to countless others, it's frustrating to hear the condescension from them towards Houston's stadium.    Does the reputation really stem from Jose Lima's first impression season some 17 years ago?

Pretty interesting.  I had no idea MMP had the lowest Runs factor.

Good for them.  That was fun and all but when do they get back into ST games?  Bregman especially.  Hopefully by Saturday at the latest.

It will be interesting to see how the MLB WBC participants fare against the rest of the MLB players that are into the last 10 days of ST so are getting very close to gameday ready.

I loved the WBC and at the same time was annoyed that Bregman didn't get more playing time.  When the US fields a roster like they did, the manager should be rotating guys in and out - and I'm not just saying that so guys can get reps before the season starts.  First of all, it's fun for the fans to see all of these different stars play together.  I was excited to see Bregman, and also guys like Murphy and Goldschmidt who barely got any playing time.  Secondly, is it really that much of a difference between Hosmer/Goldschmidt, Kinsler/Murphy, Crawford/Bregman, Arenado/Bregman, or any of those guys than Josh Harrison?   These guys are all really really good at baseball.  And if the guys are in a slump (Arenado), sub them out for one of the really really good players on the bench.  It's simple.

I worry that despite the success of this tournament that US guys are going to be hesitant to commit next time because they don't want to risk riding the pine for 2-3 weeks.  I always thought the "disruption of season preparation" was overblown but now guys will definitely use that as an excuse.

All of that said, I think the preparation stuff is still overblown.  Bregman will go back to WPB and get 1.5 weeks of playing time before the season.  I think he'll be fine but I'm sure if he starts out in a slump everyone will blame Leyland.

Great tournament.  Can't wait for the next one.

Jose did have a couple of singles in the game, but also grounded into a forceout at home with the bases loaded and none out in the 7th and FO'd for the last out of the game with a couple of runners on.

Not exactly.  Venezuela, Mexico, and Italy all ended up 1-2.  Due to the threeway tiebreaker being runs allowed per defensive inning, Venezuela and Italy are playing a tiebreaker game tonight.  Mexico is out.  And apparently there's a little controversy in that, but I don't feel the need to get into that.

Super jealous RoadRunner!   Footer is there doing radio, she said it was louder than anything she has heard.

Speaking of the WBC, maybe it is just me but why is the WBC so much more interesting this year?  In past WBCs, I'd watch maybe an inning or 5 for the whole tournament.  This year I find myself much more drawn to it.  Baseball friends of mine and folks Im friends with through twitter are also talking much more about it too.

That game last night was about as good as baseball gets.   Has the WBC always been like this and I just wasn't paying attention?

BTW, the DR lineup is absolutely ridiculous.   Even if team USA could get whatever Americans they wanted, not sure they could put up anything better than what the DR is running out there.  Incredible.

Is it just because the Astros are exciting again and they have several players playing?

the games this year have been exciting for the most part, which certainly helps.  More than anything I think the explosion of exciting young players who are playing in this tournament (non-American) makes this worth watching.  Really only the US, Canada, and to an extent Japan don't have their best players playing.  Every other country is bringing it, and it's a blast to watch.  This is the best tournament I can remember, and hopefully the momentum builds to 2021.

I was lucky to be in attendance last night at the DR/USA game in Miami.  Unreal experience.  It was the loudest game I've been to since Lidge shutting out playoff games in 2005, if not louder.  And this was a different kind of loud.  Constant noise during the game, music, dancing, etc.  When Cruz hit the go-ahead homer you could feel the stadium shaking.

It was a great moment for the WBC.  The top American players need to get over their personal hesitations or whatever it is that keeps them out of this.  Unless they are lucky enough to make a World Series, games with this kind of atmosphere and emotion are exactly why you play the game - even if it means you risk losing 2% of your multi-million dollar life earnings due to some fluke injury.

If you're a baseball fan and haven't checked in to the tournament, I recommend giving it try.

If you live in the Astros market, my understanding is that you need a cable or satellite service subscription to watch them on TV or to stream them.  The regional networks (Root Southwest) have contracts with the cable and satellite subscribers, which I'm sure prohibit them making the network available directly available to consumers, or through PS Vue for that matter.  It's a 10-year contract which I think would be up in 2022.  I'm sure at that point the shape of these contracts and the TV landscape will look vastly different.

I really wish MLB and the players would figure out how to modify the process of pitching changes.  These are easily the slowest and most aggravating party of any game.  Bring back the bullpen carts and give the pitcher 3 warm-up pitches, tops.  There's no need for a slow 150 yard jog and then 7-10 warm-up pitches all for a commercial break.  I'm sure that screws up some of the TV contracts, but if they can figure out a way to make advertisers whole while cutting down the slow transition from one pitcher to another, I think you will immediately see a 10 minute change in average game time.

What other sport allows a player to substitute in, stop the game, and warm-up?

But it sounds like all of these still require you to have a valid cable TV subscription, which really limits the benefit of such an option.

Yeah we aren't there yet, and I can't think of a way we will get to that point until the contract with Root Sports expires.  Until then this is a pretty good consolation, though.

Regarding Keuchel - if he does pitch it sounds like he would be in the "designated pitcher pool" which means USA can pull him in one of the later rounds to pitch.  So theoretically he may make 1 start.  I don't think it's anything to worry about if you're concerned about him throwing out his arm or something in a 9-game tournament.  It actually sounds like it's pretty much in line with what a Spring Training throwing schedule would be.

The Singleton signing was one of the more obnoxious moments in that 3ish year battle of Astros vs media (mainly Drellich), and the Astros have been proven right in every situation over the long run...even though they technically lost the Singleton deal.  But the point is that it was not "taking advantage" of a player.

If I had to rank the battles in order of aggravation, I would put it as:

1) Aiken fiasco - so fucking fitting he literally got hurt in his first outing of pro baseball.
2) Drellich's article of anonymous sources saying the Astros were treating the players based on their stats - the Astros surprisingly made the playoffs in 2015 way ahead of schedule.
3) Singleton contract - ended up being the best decision of Jon SIngleton's life.

I feel like I'm missing others but those are off the top of my head.

Of course it is, as long as the price you're paying doesn't prevent you from addressing other, more glaring needs. I'm not denouncing this deal - I have no fucking clue how good Charlie Morton is - but I'm saying it makes me go "Huh." And wonder how good the Astros think he can be, because I'm guessing they think he can be better than a #4 or 5 starter.

I don't think a 2 year $14M deal is going to prevent the Astros from doing anything of significance this offseason, especially from everything we've heard out of Luhnow the last week.

Not too surprising to find out Rasmus was bothered by more than just the ear cyst thing in 2016:

He underwent a pair of surgeries Oct. 18 – one to repair his core muscle, another to shave down a bone spur and repair the labrum in his left hip – but will be running at full strength by January and healthy for spring training.

(Interesting that this information is being reported by a Toronto sportswriter and neither of the brilliant Astros' beatwriters).

Although Luhnow at the year-end presser didn't seem to be entertaining the thought of bringing Rasmus back, if I thought he was gonna be healthy I wouldn't mind seeing the Astros re-sign him to a 1 yr/$6-8MM deal. If the Astros were to sign say Josh Reddick as well, a left-to-right Reddick/Rasmus/Springer outfield doesn't look half-bad and brings two much-needed lefty bats to the lineup.

The Chronicle beat writer (already forgot his name) has been reassigned to HS sports, so I don't even think the Astros have a beat writer at the Chronicle right now.

Cutting out the buscones (if they're able to actually do that) is a good thing. Putting all 30 major league teams on a level playing field regarding the ability to sign international amateur players is a good thing. But you're naive if you think this isn't more about bonus suppression than anything else. And picking the pocket of dirt-poor kids in the Dominican (and their families) and putting that money in the hands of billionaire MLB owners gives me a bit of heartburn. But the bigger issue for me is the law of unintended consequences. Without the larger financial incentives, I would be concerned that more of those kids will stay with soccer balls rather than picking up baseballs. The talent drain to other sports in the USA over the last 40+ year has been huge. I would hate to see the same thing happen in Latin America.

Agreed on all counts.  It seems like Manfred listens to feedback, so hopefully he is aware of these concerns when designing the draft.

Manfred is still pretty insistent on trying to solve these 2 issues without affecting the other.  Not sure that is possible.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2016/08/18/mlb-rob-manfred-pitch-clock-reliever-limits-limiting-shifts/88960724/

My ideas:

- 20 second pitch clock (not strictly enforced in the last 3 innings)
- 2 managerial timeouts per game (excluding pitcher substitution)
- 1 mound visit from the catcher per game
- Relievers must face at least 2 batters
- Enforce the batter keeping 1 foot in the box

I don't see the point of limiting defensive shifts.

Only speaking regarding Bregman, but I believe he is different than the others.  His K rate (prior to last night) was quite low.  I have read that he has gotten zero hits out of balls in play that recorded 95+mph; the average on balls in play at that speed is over .500.  From the scout statements I've read he's where he should be and that he isn't over matched or just sucks.  In essence he needs to quit hitting at-em balls.

Bregman has quality at-bats and even his foul balls are well hit.  Not concerned about him at all.

I think part of the amplified hype is that the playoffs are more in view right now than they were when Correa was called up.  If (big if) Bregman is the piece that gets us over the hump into the AL West lead, the hype will be justified.

It's peak fandom right now.  Young core, team is in a playoff chase, and the number 1 prospect just got called up.  Obviously a World Series ring would be the "peak", but in terms of experience and the process...it doesn't get better than this.

Not so fast on Reed.

The 2nd Wild Card has made more teams buyers and therefore raised the price for MLB-level assets at the deadline.  The Red Sox just traded the #15 prospect in all of baseball for a middle of the rotation pitcher.

I don't think a package of Colin Moran and Preston Tucker (or something similar) will get us anything of significant value in this market.

I disagree with your assessment of Carlos.  Yeah, he's no Trout, but then again, Trout isn't Correa.  I think Keuchel is good, whether he is a HOF pitcher will be determined by his pitching.

Saying Correa is not Mike Trout is not a knock on Correa at all.  Mike Trout was once-in-a-generation at ages 20-22.  Nobody is like that except Bryce Harper who is now 23.  Assuming Correa was going to elevate his play to MVP-level is unrealistic, but that is the kind of hype he is getting.  A .270 season with 20-25 homers is still in play and would still be a great year for a 21 year old SS, but that's also coming from the #3 hitter...

I'm not blaming Luhnow.  The organization appeared ahead of schedule so he made deals to help the team now.  I just think the reality is that they aren't there yet.  It's not on Luhnow...they fooled us and everyone in the media, too.  My opinion isn't supposed to take anything away from last year, either.  The organization just isn't positioned for sustained success yet like the Cubs appear to be.

I think this team had unfair expectations.  Altuve/Correa/Springer is an excellent core, but it's realistic that they are still 1-3 years away from getting the most out of that trio.  Correa is still just 21 and not Mike Trout, unfortunately, but Trout was a once in a generation 21-year old.  Even Harper took some time to adjust to MLB.  There is nothing wrong with Correa having a sophomore slump, but if he has a sophomore slump then this lineup is very mediocre (as we have already seen).  Springer is still very streaky.  Hopefully he will grow to be more consistent but if he is not taking strides to fulfill his potential then this lineup becomes below average.  Altuve is incredible, but he and Rasmus are basically carrying the bats and nobody expects Rasmus to sustain this success.  The rest of the lineup isn't worth mentioning because they are either rookies or random role players in starting positions.

If Keuchel throws like the Cy Young winner he was last year, then the Astros will probably put together a winning streak at some point and crawl back to .500.  Is it likely that DK will continue his Cy Young-level performance?  ....I don't know.  It's also hard to imagine McHugh is any better than what he has shown, and most likely he is worse.  We will be expecting a lot out of McCullers when he comes back but he's also like 22 years old.

Long story short - I think this team is still a couple years away.

I would give him the weekend before starting a Tucker/Marisnick/Gomez platoon of the 3rd OF spot with most of the starts given to Tucker.  Marisnick/Gomez become late inning pinch runners and defensive replacements.  Gattis gets another 7-10 days before Moran or Reed come up and take his spot.

That would be a lineup of:

2B - Altuve
SS - Correa
CF - Rasmus
RF - Springer
LF - Tucker
DH - White/Moran
1B - Reed/White
3B - Moran/Margo
C - Castro

That's just throwing names out there, that's not intended to be my set lineup.  I understand that only one of Moran or Reed could come up and that would mean Gattis or Kratz gets cut (fine by me).

Of course then there's the pitching...

The Aiken "reporting" and the anti-Astros FO/stats story he ran with several anonymous quotes (Cosart?) were the low-lights for me.  He never failed to take a shot at the Astros...even in 2015-2016 despite Luhnow and the organization completely proving all of the doubters wrong with their performance on the field.  Also he basically blamed the Astros the Cards hacking scandal.  He became too predictable.

I couldn't tell if he was going for click-bait or if he is just a northeastern prick who was forced to take a job in Texas to add to his resume.  He may have some talent in him, but he sure let his agenda get in the way of letting that show.

I just hope MLB switches to 8-team divisions when the time comes to expand. 4-team divisions would be a disaster.

Not a fan of expansion for several reasons but this is the biggest.  I feel like it would come with a 154-game schedule, and expanded playoffs a la NFL/NBA.

Law had the Astros #3 last year and a few years ago he had them #1 before many had caught on to what Luhnow was building.  You have to realize that graduating Correa/McCullers and trading away Phillips/Velasquez/Appel is a huge dent into the prospect pool.  That doesn't mean the Astros youth isn't set up for future success....most of that is already in Houston and therefore ineligible for "prospect" status.

Ren had kicked Rey's butt up to the newly created cliff.  All he had to do was kick her and she's dead.  Instead he offers to train her, giving her time to regroup.

I need to rewatch, but I was a little confused by that.  They had dramatic music indicating something was happening...was it just Rey regaining strength like a video game character?

I enjoyed it despite some faults.  I was not really a fan of the octopus action sequence in the freighter.  But there were some phenomenal moments, like Kylo stopping the light saber or Rey out-forcing Kylo for Luke's light saber.

A little annoyed that Rey picked up the force so easily whereas it basically took Luke weeks (?) of training to use it.

I am sure Rey will be kin to someone we already know, but I would be happy if it were just some random Jedi that hasn't been introduced yet.  Aren't there like thousands of Jedi in the galaxy?  I don't need everything to be so incestual to enjoy a good story.

Fisher may turn out to be a pretty good OFer but I think he'll be limited to LF.
Luhnow is thinning out the OF core from the MiLs. If Gomez and Rasmus are both gone after this season he is going to have to bring some talent into the organization.

P-Tuck, K-Tuck, Daz, Maris, Kemp

And Springer of course.   Not too concerned at the moment.

Talk Zone / Re: Blue Jays at Royals

I had this same debate by text last night with a friend. Cain was at first, not second, and he was not running on the pitch. The ball was in the corner. Bautista conceded Cain moving from first to third, and he was trying to prevent second and third with no outs in a tie game. Cain and the coach took a daring, risky gamble that paid off, but I do not think Bautista was to blame except by 20-20 hindsight.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, and it may be that I'm still burned by this from the DS when Cain did this against the stros, but Bautista should know his base runners better.  Of course he conceded third because the ball was hit down the line...he made a hell of a play even cutting it off.  I mean Bautista was literally on the RF warning track in the corner when he makes the throw.  I just think you make 100% sure that run isn't scoring.  I'm not even sure he gets Hosmer going for second but Hosmer probably realized Cain was going to score and figured he would not waste another out so he retreated back to first.

When I was watching it live I thought when he was whipping around to throw it was to the second baseman as the cutoff to home, instead the throw goes in on a bounce to Tulo and there's no chance.

I'm not saying Bautista made an epic blunder.  Just cutting that ball of was a hell of an effort.  But he made the wrong throw (stating the obvious) more than Cain made some incredible play in my opinion.

I like Reynolds, but if the observation was insightful, it was probably Verducci. Reynolds saying that you can't fault the defense for Cain scoring on a single. Seriously?  Hit the cut off man.

Yeah why aren't people talking about Bautista making a dumb decision on that play?  Why is he throwing to second?  You can't let that run score no matter what, the only reason Cain "scored from second on a single" is because Bautista threw to second.

Also, the emergence of the Congerbot.  I hope he sticks around just for that.  I don't mind keeping 3 catchers.

Okay, I freely admit to being a fan who pays no attention to the financial minutiae of the sport.  Can someone explain the Astros' options in regard to the $15.8mil qualifying offer?  And where did that number come from?

It is the average of the top 125 highest paid players.  BP had an article on this today and said Rasmus is on the bubble but will probably receive one.

My prediction: we give Rasmus a QO but he signs a 4-year deal somewhere else.  After thinking about it for 10 more seconds I think Oakland.

- Springer's rob in Arlington
- Early west coast road trip catapulting the season
- That stretch of walk-offs over like a 2 week period
- Keuchel...all year long
- Correa
- Fiers no hitter
- Lowrie grand slam in front of a sellout crowd
- Lowrie 3-run bomb in miracle comeback
- Carter's 3-run bomb/Go Go doubling up the runner at first to beat Seattle
- Rasmus being Beltran in October
- Go Go bat flip in Yankee Stadium
- Castro's RBI in Game 3
- Keuchel striking out Cain to end the inning in Game 3

Oh and I guess Biggio HOF

Easily the most fun year of Astros I have ever enjoyed.  The team was impossible not to like.

I also wonder what happened to the running game.  One of the main themes during the 10-game winning streak was running all over the opposition.  Part of that may have been pitchers overlooking the team's speed, and therefore now they are paying more attention to it, and part of it may be Springer being shelved for 1-2 months...but now that he's back I'd like to see that be a part of the offense again.  It feels like the offense is waiting on the big hit (which rarely comes) rather than trying to create a run.

Good point, HH, on the lack of productive outs.

1.5 weeks left, so there isn't much time left for correction...

Back to the show, I'm still enjoying it.  Maybe it's the editing, but O'Brien seems to be walking a very solid path between being a disciplinarian and being lighthearted.  There are still multiple crack-up lines every episode.  Watt is the least interesting player on the team; Charles James should stay on the roster if only for entertainment value.

Also, Mallett is a whiny bitch and would be the #3 QB (and traded/cut if another QB comes available) if I was in charge.  Skipping practice the day after getting told he wasn't the starting QB - on a team that started 4 QBs last year - was a bitch move.  He's 27, btw, a point that O'Brien made when he was told that someone was on the way to Mallett's home to find him once he failed to show and failed to answer any calls; O'Brien told them to turn (the fuck) around.

That was bad.  Coming in the next day, and blaming the whole thing on forgetting to set an alarm and a dysfunctional phone, was worse.  Oh, and his dog ate his playbook too.  Skipping practice showed a lack of commitment; not taking responsibility for it shows a distinct lack of maturity.  How can you lead the team in the heat of an NFL game when they see you behave like a spoiled baby?

Also, Savage has looked a more composed and effective QB anyway.

I can't say I'm too excited about this season, but I've enjoyed Hard Knocks and it has made me a BOB fan.  He has the right balance for a head coach that I want to root for (somewhere in between Kubiak and a Harbaugh).

Charles James is hilarious and looks like he can be an actual contributor on both sides of the ball.

Cushing is exactly what I want out of a middle linebacker.

I agree that he looks fine and healthy in the field but I don't think I've seen him even square up one ball in the last 4 weeks.  Even if he's "trying too hard" you would think he would at least run into a pitch or 2 over that stretch.

It's funny how a majority of this board went from criticizing every move the front office made to giving Luhnow the benefit of the doubt on pretty much everything.  It's not surprising given the team's performance, but the tone was strikingly different a year ago.

It's not a service time game.  The 40-man is full.  Several guys that need to be added at the end of the year and White isn't one of them.  That being said, if you think he can do better and you don't call him up it doesn't make sense.  Why trade Phillips for Gomez if you aren't willing to lose the weakest off your 40 man to fill a gaping hole in the 25-man.

Wouldn't DFA'ing Carter free up a 40-man spot for White?  That's what I'm getting at.

Can someone give me an example of a pitcher who didn't "compete out there"?  Having trouble figuring out what this actually means.  I guess body language, but still seems kind of silly.

It's only funny because every media outlet puts the matchup in a "rivarly" context.  Like "The Astros take on their division rivals."  etc.  Just feels forced, whereas the stuff with Arlington feels a little more natural.

Not taking sides, but I think the goal should be to look at statistics as a whole rather than a vacuum.  So looking at peripherals such as BABIP to understand how much a low BA should be valued is a good exercise, as is looking at the batted ball data.

Completely writing off BA altogether is silly, though.

« on: July 16, 2015, 12:30:19 pm »
I really don't like the idea of expansion - in the sense of expanding the number of teams above 30.  There are other ways MLB as a business can grow rather than just open new franchises.  I would invest more in the international brand of MLB.  Europe is still relatively an untapped revenue base of fans.  Look at what the EPL has done by stretching its reach to the US.

If I were MLB I would work to improve the World Baseball Classic and focus on building the game in Europe/Australia.  Assuming progress is made, you can work on developing international academies, tournaments, and leagues over there to make the game more global.

Keep Montreal, Charlotte, Portland, etc. vacant so that there are always options on the table when it comes to relocation.  30 teams with 8-10 playoff teams is perfect.

Head to head bracket style and 4 minute clock.  It was over by 9:45, and the lack of pitch-taking + increased swing frequency made the entire thing more exciting.  Buzzer beater homers are awesome.  It also felt like Berman was somewhat muted compared to years past.  I really enjoyed it, and I used to hate the competition.

I think the Astros are trying to draft and develop the best players available, and then will lean towards power bats when it comes to similar players.

With the big league club, I don't think there's any question they prefer power bats.  Carter, Gattis, and Rasmus were all pretty intentional deals.  It's not like Rasmus was a need, Luhnow could have easily tried to swallow Grossman/Hoes for the year.

It works for me either way. If the team loses or otherwise fails it definitely confirms my various prejudices. If the team wins I can enjoy the successes of favorite players.

In the MLS the Dallas team now has two Panamanians. They've had one, an important goal scorer, for a few years. This other one is a recent signing. Now, I don't care about the Dynamo one way or the other. I do like them more now that they rid themselves of that racist coach. But like any self respecting person I hate Dallas.

So what can a poor boy do? I root for the players, not the team. The singer, not the song.

1-1 MT We're playing pretty well.

At the beginning of the season "Ground Control" was publicly saying they wanted to be over .500 and making a run at the playoffs.  Now I certainly don't believe this team is going to cruise into the division title (there will be a losing streak this summer, I'm sure), but it's May 30 and the 5 game lead in the division still exists.  At what point do you give management credit?

It's nice to see Neyer write that piece.  The problem was never management, it was entitled shitty players.  I remember it leaking out that it was Cosart who fed Drellich these opinions...and for fuck's sake he was never one to complain.  Sending him to Miami looks like one of Luhnow's better moves.

And Bo Porter was just a failure of a manager...from his double switches that played Tony Sipp in RF to his misunderstanding of basic baseball rules.

The Astros are winning now because they stuck to the plan that Luhnow laid out from the start despite all of the media noise, and that's the overarching fact that matters the most.

Now if only we could get a similar article retroactively evaluating the Astros actions with Aiken, then I think I will be happy.

I'm starting to buy into Dansby.  I assume he would be a quick riser, and I'm pretty sure this question has been asked - where would everyone play?  Does Dansby have the arm to play 3B?  I know every scout says Correa is moving to 3B but he had such raving reviews as a defender last year.  Now that I think about it I haven't heard anything about his defense this year.  I know he bulked up in the offseason but he seems to be stealing bases, so I wouldn't think mobility at SS is an issue.

The stadium was in downtown St. Pete...on the waterfront...but the plans were to squeeze it into a pretty small place and actually build out into the water. The lack of a good plan for parking, etc. shot that deal down.

The spite flows over to the Rays as well. They are refusing to negotiate with anyone in St. Petersburg until the city allows them to negotiate with Tampa as well. That's where the impasse is.

I have read about the location issues and realize that it's not just that the fans don't care about their team, and I hope I didn't come off trashing Tampa in any way.  I would love to see a new stadium in Tampa/St Pete/Orlando and see how that metro area responds.  I also would love to see a team in Montreal and Tampa is the first organization that comes to mind.  That's really the simple reasoning of why I would love to see Tampa move to Montreal.

Leveraging for better conditions is not supporting the move to Montreal. You did not say why you "love the idea of Tampa moving to Montreal."

Tampa is a shitty situation because the stadium lease runs until like 2030.  If the lease ran out in the near future then it would be interesting to see how the city of Tampa would be acting.

Regarding my personal preference, I just think Montreal is a more interesting and exciting market than Tampa (no offense?) with just as much if not more potential to be successful.

Why?

1. I think the current setup is more fair, competitive, and interesting than 4-team divisions, which is what I assume 32 teams would lead to.  It becomes more likely that a sub .500 team makes the playoffs, which is the worst side effect of the American infatuation with "playoffs".

2. I don't like the idea of forcing baseball into markets they may not necessarily want or support them.  Use the few markets untapped by MLB to leverage existing situations like Tampa and Oakland into creating better environments there (or relocate them).  I don't think San Antonio would support baseball and there's no point in expanding just to expand.

3. Talent dilution.

Having a DH is the same thing as taking your pitcher out of the game for a pinch-hitter, then being allowed to put him back in. Multiple times.

If people want to watch a sport where offense and defense use different players, there's football. In baseball, you're supposed to do everything, and let the team deal with your weaknesses as best they can.

I think you're relying way too much on the slippery slope argument.  Everyone agrees and understands that pitchers are completely different than position players.  The DH is already in place in half of the league and it's not like there is some progressive movement to implement ghost runners for fat guys.

I don't have a strong opinion on the DH, but I stopped reading after a few paragraphs as I was hoping for something a little more persuasive.  The argument was: pitchers can get hurt while batting, but since they can get hurt in other ways, ignore that point.  By the way pitchers suck at hitting, so.........

The first sentence of the 4th paragraph is: "Don’t misunderstand me. I am not so naive, sensationalistic and alarmist to say that the NL rule is dumb simply because Adam Wainwright and Max Scherzer got hurt. No, that’s not what I’m saying at all."

He then discusses responses to anti-DH arguments.

If he hits .270 that's a big improvement over his previous major league work.  I'm reporting what his minor league history suggests.

I am usually skeptical of mid-tier prospects outperforming their minor league history, but to me Marisnick's game looks "real".  He is a tremendous athlete who always has been known to have upside.  If he has really figured out the hit tool like he has shown in the first month of the season, then I think he could be a surprise star - which is something that could push this team from pretender to contender.

I could be wrong....and I probably am because I just picked him up on my fantasy team.

With Wainwright and Scherzer both getting hurt while batting, there seem to be some strong pro-DH discussions going on.  Calcaterra is one of the better national writers in baseball and I think brings up well positioned arguments for the DH.  Of course we all long for the NL days with the Astros, but I have to say that I have flipped my opinion on the DH since the Astros have played AL ball.  I generally agree with almost all of Calcaterra's points, so I don't feel the need to highlight any in particular.

As to Appel, I understand that he is a long way (hopefully) from what he will be, but the question is whether where he is now is better than the other options, and whether the call up would hinder his development. I think he is arguably better than all the AAA options, and might be as good as Wojo and possibly Feldman and Hernandez.  So, if someone gets hurt and they're in the race, why not?

As to whether his call up would hinder his development, I'm not a big believer in that concept ( for guys he have stardom potential), but Luhnow and Co. presumably have a good read on that. I see Appel kind of like Scherzer: a guy who for years lived off his stuff and mediocre command to be a decent to good pitcher. Once his command improved, he was an ace. Appel can compete with his stuff; whether he ever improves his command is unknown and will become apparent after many, many innings. Most of those innings might as well be at the major leagues.

Agreed with all of this.  I'd much rather see Appel than Peacock, Straily, or any of the other AAA options.  I also think if Appel hadn't experienced such a weird start to his pro career he would be in AAA.  Hopefully Luhnow & co feel the same.

I doubt very seriously that Nix is some ignorant fuckwit who is unable to see what you are able to see with respect to the transaction. He knows exactly what the Astros did and why they did it and he knows that it was fucked up and he's pissed. You guys can hide behind Aiken's TJS if you want to, and that does indeed provide convenient cover for these fucks. But I keep trying to tell you necks that the Astros have pulled some extremely egregious things on their players and prospects in the Luhnow era, and that shit gets around. Given the team's reputation around the league it does not surprise me at all that Nix would still be furious at the club and would literally rule out playing for the team in the future. As long as Luhnow is in charge you will see more and more of this.

Now, for all I know the McKinsey handbook tells you to hustle your employees like they'd come into Men's Warehouse broke to buy a funeral suit. Maybe Biz can shed some light on this. But you need to understand that the team has a terrible reputation, a reputation for being total fucking slime to their players, and what you're seeing with Nix is the direct result of that.

Where is there actual proof that the team has a terrible reputation?  Obviously Aiken and Nix are bad examples, although that story on Nix showing how the Astros handled it didn't seem like the Astros acted egregiously at all.  Nix is the one who decided to let the MLBPA file a grievance that dragged out the process which screwed his timing to enroll in college.  Nix is also the one who put himself in that position by being a "tough to sign" player, so if he was ignorant that he would be tied to another player then he is either an idiot or his agent did a terrible job explaining the circumstances.

Back to my original point, the only evidence we have that the Astros are bullying players is the Aiken/Nix situation which is impossible to consider because we are missing too many parts of the story (and the facts we do have favor the Astros anyways).  We also have that story Drellich wrote in the Chronicle that mentioned anonymous sources that were mostly pitchers complaining about the shifts.  That has to be discredited because Drellich is a tool who for some reason subjectively slams the team he covers every chance he gets, and also because everyone shifts now so whatver pitcher was complaining about shifts is going to be shit out of luck wherever he goes.  I think we also established that was Cosart who apparently has bigger problems in Miami.  What else do we have? The Vogelsong story?  I don't really give a shit about that guy and I'm assuming something showed up in his physical.

It's not like it was hard to sign free agents this offseason.  Qualls has stated he loves it here.  Finally, whoever the Astros draft and offer millions to next year will love the Astros because they will be paying them millions.

I think what the reaction of Drellich and some others boils down to at this point is basically "Ok, so maybe the Astros had good reason to to do what they did, but... they still, potentially, might have sort of been jerks about it. Ok, maybe not jerks, but at least slightly too business-like and computer-y, and not super-nice warm fuzzy touchy-feely guys like we seem to believe every GM and executive should be."

Would I prefer to have strong reason to believe that the members of the Astros FO are all super-nice, compassionate and considerate guys who go out of their way to treat every player and employee well no matter what? Sure.

Do I need to believe that in order to enjoy rooting for the success of the Houston Astros baseball team? No.

Would them being occasionally less than super-nice, compassionate and considerate, and perhaps a little too focused on conducting business in a business-like fashion make them different from the vast majority of upper-level management people in America? I doubt it.

It is strange to me how much the media tries to paint the Astros as evil villains.  I guess that article Drellich wrote about the Astros treating players like assets got a lot of clicks and the momentum just built from there, but it's mindboggling even now how stubborn they are about this Aiken situation.

At least some are starting to realize it's getting out of hand.  Brian Kenny wrote an apology to the Astros in a sportsonearth article, and Craig Calcaterra had a great tweet yesterday saying the Astros caused 9/11.  All of the attention has made me root even harder for the Astros if anything just as a fuck you to the media.

Exactly - the decision to lower the price was about taking on additional risk.  They felt he had a higher risk to need TJ and that recovery could be different because of its size.  Investment is about risk & returns, plain and simple.  DD in all deals, whether baseball, energy, or healthcare often has an agreed price which can be adjusted by DD and perceived risk.

On another note, I can't believe (actually I can once I thought about it) how the national press continues to dig in and defend their trash talk of the Astros management last summer.

Rosenthal and Callis are bad, but Drellich is the worst.  I'm almost embarrassed for these guys because they can't admit the Astros were acting in the best interests of the club and were right.

I know this has been covered but.....what's amazing to me is the advice he received to NOT take the $5 MM offer.  To get that number again, he'd likely have to get picked in the top 5 picks.  He had to know if he didn't sign that the Astros would be likely to have 2 of those 5 picks (or 2 of 6/7).  Anyway, that really leaves only 3-5 teams who would have to take a chance on him having seen one ML team already show extreme concern.  And even then, what's the upside?  Another $1 million?  Geez.  Even if you KNOW you are healthy and can prove it, why take that chance?  And now he's got the perception he has an injury of some sort?  Many GM's will be frightened by the smoke.

Looking back, it feels like Close (Aiken's agent) reacted too emotionally to Luhnow leaking that there was something wrong physically with Aiken.  But...Luhnow really had no choice.  The media (mainly Drellich and Buster Olney) built up the narrative that Luhnow and the Astros FO as an evil organization that is trying to squeeze every little bit of value out of players using whatever leverage possible, so when this whole issue came up there is no way Luhnow could remain quiet - that just feeds the narrative and continues to damage their image even more.

Maybe Close trashing the Astros in public convinced the Astros to increase their offer and maybe Close at the end of the day recommended to Aiken that he take the $5M deal.  All he can really do is feed his client the information and advice he needs to make a decision.  Unfortunately for Aiken, it looks like he might have made the wrong one - and that's why I think the argument is that Close should have handled this differently.

Thanks for all the info.  Is Hinojosa eligible, and is the second round the current projection?  I was very impressed by him last year, and was curious what round correlated to his level of talent.  Second round seems about right, but I would think mid to low 1st round is still possible.

Compared to the those voicing opinions in the article, I have only seen a tiny fraction of college baseball, but I enjoyed the low scoring last year.

I don't go to baseball games for dingers, but there is a lost element when the threat of a homer is almost completely removed from the game.

It sure doesn't. Perhaps he will end up throwing a HS season's worth of innings by June, but it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up being limited to much less than that. I suspect Close's petulance has cost his client a couple million bucks or more.

I don't see how he comes out ahead financially. The Astros have 2 of the top 5 picks and we know they aren't drafting him.  I imagine the other three teams will be hesitant, too.

« on: January 31, 2015, 09:11:51 am »
I wish I had a better understanding of whom Moncada compares to at this stage of his development. I've seen things along the lines of "best young Cuban since Jorge Soler"... well, Jorge Soler is a good-looking player who had a great 2014 in AA and AAA, but is he a guy you regret not throwing $80 million dollars at 3 years ago? If Moncada were in the 2015 draft, would he be a Harper/Strasburg-type lock to go #1? Would he go #1 if you combined the 2012-15 classes all into one?

It's just hard for me to imagine that, with the inherent bust rate of 19-year-olds, spending $80m on a signing bonus for this one teenager would be a sound investment. Maybe it's not realistic to think your alternative is to spend $8m apiece on 10 teenagers, but if you look at it from that basic standpoint, I just have a hard time seeing how it's smart to drop that much coin on one kid.

Every baseball investment carries a ton of risk.  Seeing guys like Cespedes, Puig, Abreu, etc make an impact and the comps Moncada is getting makes me think he would be worth it.  I doubt Luhnow has that kind of flexibility.

In general I wish the Astros were more of a player in the international market.  For all of the wheeling and dealing Luhnow has done during this 4-year rebuild there has been hardly any investment of any significance in the international market.

At QB, the Texans don't have a really good option, and are extremely unlikely to get one through the draft.  I don't see how bringing in Manning for a year or two delays a program that doesn't exist.  Also, I think holding Manning's clipboard and watching him play might be the best possible coaching for a young QB.

You also can't keep wasting JJ Watt's prime or what little is left of Arian Foster's with random shitty QBs.

Just a quick rundown of positive things since the Astros re-inserted Altuve back into the lineup to win the batting title.

- TV deal gets done
- Biggio HOF
- Appel's strong performance in the AZFL
- Nix/Aiken grievance settled with no future draft pick effects
- Signed solid veteran FA's to fill immediate needs, no longer than 3 yr contracts, no draft picks forfeited
- Spring Training relocation takes big steps forward; new stadium likely breaking ground in March
- Last, but certainly not least, we finally got the pitch framing master catcher we've needed all along

What am I missing?

The only negative thing I can think of is the front office contemplating getting rid of Tal's Hill.

I haven't been this excited for an Astros season since '06.

"Fix" it?  There's nothing wrong with it.  You've divided the league into divisions.  Your playoff system states that division winners compete in the playoffs.  That's what's happening.  I get that you don't care to see Carolina, but the system is not broken.

I'd argue that a team with a losing record hosting a playoff game is a broken system.

Have team six and team seven play a thirty minute game to determine who advances and then figure out how to make the Pro Bowl affect the Super Bowl and then I think we'd have story lines a-plenty.

As much as I hate Selig, I'm a fan of the current MLB format. You just have to look at the 1-game playoff as a punishment for the first wild card team for not winning their division.

The All Star Game outcome affecting WS home field is still ridiculous, though.

You're right.  It would be far better and more accurate to have a committee of a dozen or so informed members evaluate all the teams based upon their enlightened criteria and decide who should make the playoffs.

A simple caveat requiring a winning record to make the playoffs would fix this.

As serious as the NFL takes itself, it sure looks illogical with its playoff structure.  Arizona at Carolina has to be the worst playoff matchup I can remember.  I think there are 14 teams better than those 2 at this point.

Football commentators have A LOT of dead space to fill.  Hence the need to use 30 words when 5 will do.

The problem is that this necessary verbal diarrhea from football has infected pretty much everything else, and now everyone with a mic believes that the sound of their voice is what we tune in for, so they never STFU and let the pictures (worth a thousands words, right?) speak for themselves.

Agreed, which is why soccer coverage is generally great.

I still don't understand why the Astros owe him a dime?  Does it suck he got caught in the crossfire, sure, but the Astros having to fork out 1.5 mil?  There was no signed contract.  Surely this isn't the first time under the new rules that do to not signing your 1st round pick, you couldn't afford to sign someone else.

I am with you.  The risk is definitely more than $1.5M, but if I were an arbiter I would have ruled in favor of the Astros.  They played by the rules, and it's just a shitty break for Nix.  Would a player owe a team money if he verbally agreed to a deal and then backed out at the last second?  I seriously doubt it.

I also think the Astros are still high on Nix and are hoping this is a way to earn some good will back in case they want to select him in next year's draft.

Just puts an exclamation point on what was a total failure by the front office.  2 consecutive bungled drafts now by the Luhnow and team.  2013, Appel was a mistake that could have been avoided and they followed it up with 2 pitchers unlikely to ever see a major league mound.  How nice would it be to have Bryant starting at third this year?  Suspect there was a reason why Heck was looking at a 17 year old in Puerto Rico instead of the consensus Appel.  And though last year's pick Aiken was likely the correct choice, not sure the situation could have been handled worse.

I think we have a ways to go before judging any of these picks.

I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't come into play some. But the fact that OSU won one more game than either TCU or Baylor, had a strength of schedule advantage, and won their conference were all very convenient reasons to choose OSU. It also kept the committee from that messy decision of choosing between the two B12 schools. I heard this morning that we may not get an 8 team playoff for a decade or more because of the tv contract now working under.

I thought TCU had a better strength of schedule?

All of the logical argument points favored TCU.  The 3 reasons Ohio St. got in were conference championship, they are a bigger TV draw than TCU/Baylor, and the Big 10 had more influential representation on the committee than the Big 12.  The 4 team playoff is much better than the BCS, but it is still riddled with the same problems that are at the core of college football.

Disclaimer: I'm a UT guy and don't care about the Big 12.

Threw away 2 million per year if you count sales tax/cost of living.  Insane.  Have the Astros fallen that far as a ball club that a journeyman like Miller wants nothing to do with you?

He also lives in Tampa, and the Yankees ST is in Tampa.  Sounds sort of silly, I know, but that was a big deal to him.  He said there were things the Yankees offered that the Astros simply couldn't.

But really the Astros are going to have to pay the "shitty organization" tax for the foreseeable future to get anyone worth a damn.  Even Feldman was an over-market deal.

Tomas has been compared to Marlon Byrd. Is that what you want? And, depending how you define "fake" or "interest," they've demonstrated some form of one or the other towards Hanley Ramirez, David Robertson, as well as (depending on how you define "big")  Brett Andersen, Jason Hammel, maybe Andrew Miller, Kenta Maeda, etc.

I don't really give a shit whom they are publicly linked to, I just hope they actually sign some good players. From everything I've read about Tomas, I don't mind that they didn't join that bidding war.

Drellich seemed to be going for views of the article with how he wrote it. He only talked from one side of a deal the Astros could have made. He talked about how it would have to be big in order for all of the pieces to fall right with the 40 man and adding or not Feliz.  He never surmises that if Feliz were part of a deal that the receiving team might need him off the 40-man at the time of the deal in order to made appropriate 40-man moves after the deal to add Feliz.  Which would be why the Astros waited until the last minute to add him.

That makes sense.

Just to be clear.  I'm not calling for his head.  I just used to be a staunch supporter of Mr Luhnow.

And a correction.  Conger is under team control for 3 years.  I said 2 earlier.

But to be clear on Tropeano, I don't mind trading prospects for MLB players.  No problem with the Cosart trade (though that landed more prospects).  No problem with Lyles.  Both are talented young pitchers.  But every article you read about guys like JD and Tropeano made you want to root for them.    Made you think they would be more than their talent.  You just hate to see these guys go.  Especially if good backup catcher is the return.  Perhaps Luhnow is trying to set the market for a haul from Castro.  To me it really doesn't matter.  Because I believe that selling Tropeano now is selling low.  And he's a guy I would have rather rooted for.

Disagreeing with the move is fine, but do you really think the Astros FO doesn't value work ethic because of this trade?

I'm sorry but Luhnow and his team just don't seem to put a value on work ethic and the intangibles that make one player better than another.  I'm officially off the Luhnow bandwagon.

I understand the concerns but this is a bit of a reach.

Watching JD last year after we let him go was tough, but that shit happens in baseball.  Bagwell, Lofton, Abreu....those are famous examples but you can make all-star teams every year with guys like that.  Collin McHugh is one of those guys.  Using the JD mistake to knock this trade and turn it into some to generalization of the organization's outlook on work ethic doesn't really connect to me.

Pretty good outing tonight by Appel but for some reason I am just now "wowed" when I see him pitch.

I only saw the first inning.  Every out seemed like it took every ounce of effort, but maybe I was just reading too much into every single at bat.

And I assume you mean you are "not" wowed.  I was actually impressed with how his stuff looked but his location was not consistent.  He may be a career middle of the rotation starter that has 2-3 really good years.  If that happens he's a successful #1 overall pick despite everyone's expectation that he should be Roy Halladay all over again.

Maybe there is a Castro + Fowler deal in play for Jean Segura, and Russell Martin is going to be signed to be the starting catcher.

I dunno, but we have a ways to go before Opening day.  At this point I'm ok with Luhnow trading fringe prospects (or legit prospects, for that matter) in exchange for pieces to help the 2015 major league team.  You can argue that having Tropeano is better for the 2015 Astros than having Conger, but it doesn't appear that Luhnow thinks so.

I am curious as to what is really behind this.  It seems like they want to get rid of it, then then try to create justifications; a cart before the horse type thing.  First, they promoted the lame injury rationale, now unfocused crap like finding room for an Astros Hall of Fame, gathering spot, or restaurant.

I'm not a big fan of the pole out there, but I also like the uniqueness of the hill.

$$$

Although, tearing something up before it truly becomes an Astros tradition and replacing it to replicate someone else's tradition (copying Yankee Stadium outfield Hall of Fame monuments) is probably the best "nod" to the Astros history there could be.  We can't even keep the same colors for more than a decade.

Again, I am strongly opposed to this and can't imagine whatever they replace it with will be better.

Not in favor of removing the hill.  It is one of the best/unique features of MMP, in my opinion.

Has anyone actually been injured on the hill?  If anything it creates more exciting plays (Berkman's catch, triples, etc.).

Also, having people sit where the visitor's bullpen is now sounds extremely lame.

Make it 12. Final line (5 2 0 0 0 4).

I'm really glad Footer put that together.  I was thinking about this and 05 yesterday trying to remember which game/year had each moment.  The Kent homer in Game 5 was the first time I realistically felt like we were going to win the WS.  Everything up to that just felt like a fun little ride to eventual disappointment, even though we had finally beaten the Braves in the first round.

I was at game 4 of the 04 series with my family.  Things I remember from that game: Raul Chavez getting the game tying bloop single, my mom breaking her hip jumping for the Beltran homer, and not being able to hear myself think in the 9th because Minute Maid was so loud.  Easily the best sporting event I have ever been to, and I have been fortunate to see some pretty cool stuff.  Because I'm bored and it's the offseason, top moments for me at Minute Maid:

1) Game 4 of 04 NLCS
2) Biggio 3000
3) Biggio last game
4) Ausmus last game (surprisingly really well done, fun, sort of emotional)
5) Bonds 70th homer (team was out of it and I bought into the "part of history")

BP notes on Aplin:

Quote
Aplin doesn’t impress you at first glance, but he does enough things well that he should end up being a major leaguer. He doesn’t hit for much power, but he has just enough pop to keep pitchers honest and walks more than he strikes out. As an up-the-middle player with on-base skills and decent speed, he does enough on a baseball field to help a team.

That article didn't support what you implied.  That article basically said "recent managerial hires show a trend to being less experienced and there needs to be a way to implement SABR knowledge/tactics on the field."  There wasn't much focus beyond that, and the article didn't give examples of successful organizations where the clubhouse was an extension of the GM, and not the domain of the manager.

It might be a subtle difference, but IMO, communication feels more free and more productive when there are clearly separated levels of authority, and better communication produces an environment for better performance.  It might also be a difference in my conception of a manager, and what I assume is a different conception.  If you view a manager's duties to basically be filling out lineups and making in game moves, then this arrangement makes more sense.  If you view a manager's duties to bring out the most in his GM given talent, this arrangement seems sub-optimal.

But, I'm often wrong and hope the ever evolving Luhnow experiment succeeds.

The article doesn't come out and say what I said but I think it provides some support.  I don't think it's a coincidence that these managers are being hired for their first gigs while the analytical approach in front offices continue to be ramped up across baseball.

Examples?

Not sure if you subscribe to BP, but here's an article talking about the types of managers being hired (young and inexperienced) and what it might mean.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=22171

Quote
If your vision is that as a GM you have substantial input into roster construction and usage, you’re not really all that worried about your new manager being inexperienced there. (In fact, you may well prefer it over a manager who wants a larger amount of input than you really want to give him.) In terms of tactics, all of these men have played in the majors and so have seen everything before. And if you have strong opinions on tactics, again, it may be easier to find a manager who doesn’t and provide him with guidance. Or you can find coaches that help supplement a manager’s abilities there.

I'd like to reiterate this.  It is very cool that Mike is even interacting with us.  He's obviously pissed off at the media's portrayal of the Astros FO, and I don't blame him.  There's nothing wrong with that even though I think that's misplaced in the Altuve lineup situation.

This part:

Just as I want the owner to let the GM hire his staff, I want the GM to let the manager hire his staff.  I don't think its at all optimal to have the manager as such a direct extension of the GM. Having real separation seems healthier.

I don't see anything wrong with the GM being an integral part of the hiring process, especially when he is trying to instill certain strategies into the players on the field.  Ideally it would all be a collaborative effort, which is what it sounds like it will be.

The manager's role is being reduced throughout baseball, so this isn't exactly unique to the Astros.

This might be the answer that best pulls the pieces together -- the quotes from Altuve and Lawless (that the call came from above), Mike Fast's response here (that the whole story isn't public) and Luhnow's silence (effectively taking the blame for his boss).

The other annoyance is Altuve's quote that the front office told him, "They let me know it’s something I’m not gonna get by myself. There’s a lot of people around who deserve that too."

W T F ?   Who exactly are those people? I mean some people deserve some credit like his hitting coach but this is 100% a JOSE ALTUVE award.  I'd love to know who these "other people who deserve the award" are.    Well maybe Tim Purpura and the scout who signed him deserve some credit too.

This was the tipping point for me.  I don't care if the FO guys think they are more important than the players on the field, but you sure as hell don't let the player know that you think that.

Of course, that could be taken out of context and just used as bait for clicks.  I'm not sure sure how and what context that would be, but there's a chance I suppose.

Drelich has some quotes that make me wonder if the FO thought there was no way Martinez would be able to catch Altuve unless he went 0-fer so why not let him sit the last day and soak in his glory and not worry about it.  IOW, some sort of bizarre reward for a job well done.  If that's the case, well intentioned but tone deaf.

This was my assumption after reading everything.  It also fits the FO's theme of thinking they're doing what's best for the org but once it hits reality they look like complete jackasses.

Part of what bugs me here is that people are making assumptions about how the discussion went that are not correct.  But since I'm not going to reveal how the discussion went, there's not a lot that I can say about that.

However, the larger narratives in this thread are certainly out of whack.  How does the narrative of a meddling stat-mad GM forcing things down the throat of his old-school baseball people square with the reality of an Astros organization that had its batting champion on the field today and a Rockies organization that did not?

I don't think anyone is complaining about new school vs old school in today's situation.

Altuve said throughout the week that he wanted to play and then this morning he was told that he was not in the lineup and it was not his decision.  What are we supposed to think?  Maybe Crane ordered Luhnow to bench him, maybe Lawless thought it was a good idea and Luhnow listened to his interim manager, I don't know.  I guess all of the blame was thrown on Luhnow and maybe you're saying that shouldn't be the case - but that's the position he has put himself in.

I don't care what the Rockies did.  I care what the Astros did.

The team winning is something that needs significant improvement.

There is a certain segment of the baseball world that likes nothing better than to portray a conflict between new school and old school.  I'm not sure that's as valid in the wider pro baseball world as it was five or ten years ago.

It's also been very popular to portray that conflict as running through the heart of the Houston Astros organization this year.  The truth is that there is way more cooperation and way less "schools" or "sides" to a conflict here than anyone on the outside likes to imagine.  We are all on the same team and from what I have seen do a very good job of pulling together in the same direction to help the team improve and grow, no matter the background of the person involved.  But if you want to read every news story about the Astros in the light of an old-school/new-school conflict, you can do that, and it will skew your understanding of what is happening in the organization.  A lot of people choose to do that, and there's not much I can say to convince them otherwise.  They will see things and find "facts" that prove me wrong.  So be it.  Eventually the truth will come out, but there's not a lot of good that PR will do in the mean time.

On the other hand, I do understand, and the front office understands, that sometimes perception is reality.  There are things we would do differently if we could do them all over again, at least partly because of the perception that resulted.  But at the same time, the larger narratives that have been woven around them are mostly false.

I understand all of that, and I have largely defended you guys over the last few years because I could see the logic and reasoning behind the decisions being made and it was clear when columnists were just trying to create a story (i.e. Appel bullpen session).  That is what made this particular situation so aggravating to me.  The assumed logic was wrong, and it was hard for me to assume anything else.

That said, the team is improving and I have always believed the front office's overall strategy is the right one.  That is one area I think you guys are excelling in and probably the most important one, so keep up the good work.  Thanks again.

Yes, I read this, and no, you guys don't know what the discussion was in the room.  You can make assumptions, but they are off base.  Be glad the right choice was made in the end.

I appreciate your interaction and I'm sure you can't say anything else, but it is very hard to not make the assumptions that were made based on the facts known.  As happy as I am for Altuve and as excited as I am for 2015, I have never been more annoyed and frustrated with the front office and management.  This is much more infuriating than the Aiken situation, only because it seems to be very apparent how this all went down.

We all need to improve, whether it's the Astros on the field playing baseball or ourselves in our 9 to 5 jobs.  I hope you guys are aware that the PR with the fans is something that needs significant improvement.

Mike Fast reads this right?  Mike, does the front office even contemplate fans' reactions to simple decisions like this?  I can't believe they did this time because it is such a brain dead one. Just tell Luhnow to log on to Twitter and he will see how ridiculous this is.

As smart as Luhnow appears, he really does seem out of touch with fans' perception.  Is he trying to make the fans hate the FO?

For all of the analytical guys the Astros employ, they should just pay one logical fan to run decisions like this by just to check the temperature of their decisions.  Im only half kidding.

I wouldn't touch Ramirez with a 10-foot pole. That's some bad locker room juju, not what we need with a young team. I think you could do a lot worse than Marwin. I'm more curious about the catcher spot: if my catcher is going to hit .220 with little power, I want a lot better defense out of him.

I would have had no problem with the Astros taking a shot at HanRam and trying him at 3b, but I doubt he would want to come here.  He will have suitors.

Trading for a veteran catcher who is trying to get more playing time would be a good way to challenge Castro in the spring.  Not sure where Stassi fits in the long term plans.

443
Talk Zone / Re: Next year's team
« on: September 24, 2014, 07:57:49 pm »
Not that everyone has to agree with me, but what exactly do you not like about giving the job to Marwin? He's hit .273/.321/.394 this year, with 14 doubles and 6 HR in 306 trips to the plate. If you project that out to full-time duty you're talking about a very good defensive SS, switch-hitter, with the potential to rack up 30 doubles and 10-15 HR. And he'll be 26 years old next year.

Sure, his success with the bat this year could be a fluke... or maybe he's turned a corner and can even improve a little more. His last full season in the minors, in 2011, he hit .288/.343/.400, with 30 doubles, in 124 games split evenly between AA and AAA. So it's not completely unprecedented. If you believe his bat can be adequate for a SS, then the only real flaw I can see is he's not as fast a baserunner as you expect from that type of player.

Edit: and here's MLBTR's list of free agent SS:
Mike Aviles (34) – $3.5MM club option with a $250k buyout
Clint Barmes (36)
Asdrubal Cabrera (29)
Stephen Drew (32)
Rafael Furcal (37)
J.J. Hardy (32)
Jed Lowrie (31)
John McDonald (40)
Nick Punto (37) – $2.75MM club/vesting option with a $250K buyout
Hanley Ramirez (31)

Hardy, Lowrie, and Hanley are appealing, but are all likely to get big long deals I'd imagine.

I don't think I would consider Marwin "very good" at SS, but I'd be okay with him.

2015 seems like a year that the FO will want this team to turn a corner.  Adding a veteran to help establish some order in the clubhouse should be a priority, whatever position that is.  I don't even know who that was supposed to be this year...I guess Feldman and the bullpen FA's that never pitched.

Hardy, Lowrie, or Drew all seem like candidates for a 3-4 year deal.  I think the Astros might be able to overpay for a 2-year deal if they were really concerned about blocking Correa.  Or Luhnow could sign one of these guys to a 3-4 year deal, give Dominguez another shot at 3b and if he isn't cutting it then bring Moran/Correa up to play 3b or move Hardy/Drew to 3b (I don't think Lowrie could play 3b).

I would rather spend money at filling in the infield gaps with veterans rather than throw money into the never ending bullpen black hole.  If it creates problems with prospects coming up, then those are good problems to have.

I have no reason to believe either Keuchel or McHugh will drop off other than it's tough for a lot of pitchers to put together back to back good seasons, and it's harder to expect it with two relatively unknown breakout guys like them.

Of course maybe I'm just conditioned to losing teams since 07 and these are the kind of things that happen to losing teams.  If this team is going to be contending next year then I guess these guys would be a reason why.

All of that said, I'm optimistic about next year and am expecting a season right around .500.

The bottom line is they have gotten awful hitting from 1B and LF, generally the 2 easiest positions to get decent offense from, and 3B, less easy but still typically counted on for run production. If they can turn those spots in the order from huge minuses to pluses or at least something approaching decent, and find 2-3 more good relievers in addition to Qualls, Fields, Sipp and whoever else (Folty, or will he start next year?), then it's not hard to picture this team being decent.

Of course, one could question whether Keuchel and McHugh will be able to replicate their excellent numbers next year, but all in all the rotation looks to be in decent shape.

FWIW, I hope they keep Fowler too (and bat him leadoff, where he belongs, for God's sake).

I would be confident betting on one of Keuchel or McHugh falling off next season, but maybe I'm just a pessimist.

I keep looking for Drellich's offensive tweets and every "objective" spanking and come away perplexed.  It appears that some fans want their reporters to merely parrot and blindly support those they cover.

The Steve Phillips tweet was pretty direct.

I'm aware of the Ortiz stuff, and generally dismiss him like I dismiss Justice, but I'm not aware of the Drellich stuff.  I mean, I read some criticism of the front office by him, but I'm thankful some reporter has the professional integrity to question an organization that has performed as poorly as this one.  What has Drellich said that is so out of line?

His tweets don't come across as objective at all.  He also got a little fussy when Keith Law downplayed the Appel bullpen stuff.  It's pretty obvious he has some axe to grind.

Drellich also seems to have some agenda against the Astros FO.  Hard to see him being on the inside as a media member going forward.

Between Tropeano, Buchanan, and now possibly White and Wojo, if they've both gotten back to full strength, they have several candidates to take Peacock's spot in the rotation for the rest of the year. Clearly, the Astros see something in him that says potential good SP, but damned if I know what it is.

Which of these guys can be converted to relievers?

One of the things I particularly like about baseball is its leisurely pace and essential to that for me is that there is no official clock of any kind. If someone decided to engage a pitch clock or limit the number of times a catcher can talk with the pitcher or any of the other things that are being discussed the game will lose appeal.

I am against a pitch clock but I can't stand multiple mound visits followed by pitching changes.   I like the idea of capping non-pitching change mound visits.  I'm also for keeping batters in the box.

Well, I'm a don't rock the boat sort of guy but I have to say I don't understand why there's so much clamor to speed up the game. I have visions of the baseball's turning into a version of an early motion picture, sepia figures running around at double speed.

Maybe they should just allow greenies again and let the supposed problem sort itself out.

I think it's a problem.  The length of the game is longer, the lack of action is increasing due to the walk/strikeout strategies teams seem to favor, and there's just too much competition in the entertainment world.  Hell, I love baseball and I could barely sit through the entire 3.5 hour Astros/Rangers game in the Diamond Club last week.

What is the "steroid witch hunt"?

Just referring to how aggressively Selig went after the Biogenesis guys.

I'm not sure if you're looking to turn this into a back-and-forth message board thing, but if you are I don't really have the energy so I'll concede early.

As long as Manfred scales back the steroid witch hunt and focuses on real issues affecting the game such as pace of play, media deals, and international growth, then I'm fine with it.  Hopefully Crane is in his corner, although that seemed to do jack shit for Drayton.

Phillips was a 2-sport guy out of HS, who had to be lured away from NC State football.  It sounds like the tools have always been there, and the upside was always the attraction.

I stole this info from this: http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2012/6/5/3066057/mlb-draft-2012-astros-draftee-profile-brett-phillips-cf-seminole-hs-fl

This article just goes over those who might be added, and assumes that finding room will be difficult.  I guess it's a point of contention amongst some people, but finding room on the 40 man for new players seems pretty easy to me.

There is a lot of trash on the 40 man that won't be missed for any of these guys.

But then of course, JD Martinez.

Not necessarily. Making a number of promotions with a month to go in the minor league season to let players get their feet wet in the leagues they'll be assigned to the following year has been fairly common under the Luhnow regime.

Ah, I didn't realize how far along we are in the season.

Considering the pitching coming up, Cosart seems replaceable to me.  I'm sure the media will spin this as the Astros are never going to not rebuild, and I would agree if it didn't appear to be such a good haul for a pitcher worth ditching.

And I also wouldn't be surprised if Cosart was the guy in the clubhouse saying stuff to Ortiz.
