He threw to 3rd and it was a close play.  Get your facts straight.  That's great posting strategy.

I was actually ok with the throw to third.  The 2 throws home were bad decisions.

It's a bad decision to try and get outs for your pitcher?  Maybe the infielder should never throw to first to try and get a runner out... in case they make a bad throw or something.  Hey yeah, they should never throw to second base when trying for a double play because they can throw into the outfield accidently, better to secure the one out at first... that is if you can make a perfect throw 100% of the time and if you can't then think about the consequences young man!

Bad decision?  Give me a freaking break.

Your right Noe, he should go ahead and show off his strong arm by making throws when there is not much of a chance to get the runner and it allows the runners to move up which puts them in scoring position and takes the double play out of order.  That's ok, they can always walk Berkman to get to Lee who happens to be a very good rbi man.  That is a great 1st inning strategy.

I think the first one he had a shot, the ball just got away from him.  It happens.

He didn't have much of a shot to get Matsui and it isn't a good idea to do that in the 1st inning.  He should have thrown it to 2nd where his teammate was calling for the ball.

Talk Zone / Re: Rick Ankiel

He made 2 throws home when there was no chance to get the runner and it allowed the trailing runners to move up a base on both occasions.  Those were 2 huge errors in judgment that helped the Astros out big time.

They might want to teach Ankiel what bases to throw to in the 1st inning.  He really opened the door for the Astros.  Nice of the Cards to make him their center fielder.

« on: May 16, 2008, 09:46:56 pm »
That didn't stop the wolves though.  Pallilo said "Bourn should be sent to AAA or benched".  This morning, Davies said "It's time they got rid of him.  Get Kenny Lofton or move Pence to center field".  See, they went from "move him down in the lineup" to "bench him" "demote him to AAA" to outright "release him".  After 144 ABs.  Now Cooper does this for a series to get Bourn a few days away from the pressure of leading off and they're not satisfied.

You'd think that people who work in sports media would be more in the know.  From someone who is in the know about this (not me), the sports media folks who get to air this crap "don't know shit about baseball".

Those guys are idiots.  Bourn plays a great center field and he leads mlb in steals.  The team is winning.  If it aint broke don't fix it.  Bourn will be fine.  He will be back in the leadoff spot when they go back home. This AL series gave Cooper an opportunity to make this move.

What's your source/basis for this speculation?

They can't let him keep hitting .180 and 3 weeks should give him ample time to come out it.  His past performance suggests that he will come out of it, but sometimes young players need to go back to the farm to work things out.

No, it doesn't matter what I think or that you wouldn't bat him leadoff. Anybody can see that  he needs to start laying off the sliders out of the zone or he will be heading down to AAA.

Another team could sign him for the league minimum, but the Astros owe him the balance on his contract.

Taveras' skills as a "good CF" AND as a lead off man were very much in question in 2006. as you conveniently ignore in your relentless second-guessing, he was benched in favor of Burke during that season.

Taveras was showing pretty good improvement in the outfield in 2006.

34
Talk Zone / Re: Rox take shot on Willie T
« on: October 16, 2007, 09:40:51 pm »
So would it have been a better move to leave them with that true center fielder and lead-off man (after seasons in which he had posted .325 and .333 OBPs) and no #2 pitcher?  Because that was the alternative they were looking at.

Absolutely, you need a good center fielder in Minute Maid.  Taveras is also a good base stealer.  By trading him it left the team with no base stealer, no lead off man, and no center fielder.  It weakened  the team.

I think his possible role is a Bruntlett player who gives versatility at the end of the bench.   He's 31 and has yet to play a full season in the bigs.  He'll have to fight to stick.

At age 31, he could play short for about 5 years.  He looks like he can do it.

he was not "benched." he just did not play.

No matter what you call it.  My point is this:  If Scott plays on Saturday, he would have not played for 6 days.  He was hot when Garner decided not to play him.  I think that it would have made more sense to play him against James and the righty pitcher.  Rather than let him sit for a long period of time and cool off.

Talk Zone / Re: Noe, why did they bench Luke Scott?
« on: August 02, 2007, 07:48:34 pm »
It's only been two games, one against a lefty. The Astros have a third baseman now and the nod against the righty went to Lamb over Scott. I think that's a defensible decision, don't you?

No, I don't Mikey.  I think that is stupid to take a guy out of the lineup when he has hit .444 over his last 10 games.

48
Talk Zone / Noe, why did they bench Luke Scott?
« on: August 02, 2007, 02:18:08 pm »
Scott has hit .444 in his last 10 games and around .390 since the all-star break.  Scott has a history of hitting very well at this time of the season.  He hit .336 for Houston last year in the 2nd half of the season and he had tremendous numbers at Round Rock in the 2nd half in 2005 and 2004.

When Purpura acquired Aubrey Huff last year he explained how Huff had a history as a great 2nd half hitter.  If past history was important with Huff, shouldn't it also be important with Scott?

Why would they take their hottest hitter and put him on the bench for 6 days?  I say 6 days because the next 2 starters are leftys and Garner hasn't started him against a lefty since April.

Scott's numbers aren't great, but they aren't bad either.  He has one more extra base hit than Lance Berkman and his OBP is close to what Hunter Pence put up.

Scott is also a low salary guy.  I think that it would be reasonable to think that he would hit .270 and have 25 homers if they let him play.  What is wrong with that?  With his salary, wouldn't that be a good fit?

Also, if they wanted to get rid of him, shouldn't they play him and hope that he continues to be hot and attracts interest from other teams?

Talk Zone / Can Bruntlett be the shortstop?
« on: July 08, 2007, 04:27:07 pm »
Bruntlett has looked very good at short.  He is very good on defense and also handles the bat well.  I think that they should give him a shot.

If someone will over pay for Everett, I would deal him for a top prospect or prospects.  With Lugo hitting .197 for Boston, I wonder if they would be interested in Everett?  Does Boston have any prospects that Houston would be interested in?  Are there any other teams that need a shortstop for the stretch drive?

It looks to me that the Astros could trade any of the following players:  Everett, Qualls, Wheeler, Jennings, Lamb, and Loretta.  I think that one or more of these guys could be traded.  They just need to have a team get desperate at the deadline and trade them some top prospects that they can use.  Remember Jeff Bagwell?

Does anybody know at this point what top prospects are out there that the Astros would be interested in?

I also like the way Albers has looked coming out of the pen.  I think that his development makes it likely that either Qualls or Wheeler will be dealt.

Talk Zone / Re: White off DL; McLemore optioned to RR
« on: June 21, 2007, 12:28:58 am »
Specifically, what do you mean by "more valuable"?  And what do you think Chad Qualls is to this team?  Thanks, I'll hang up and listen... or maybe not because I don't think you understand baseball at all.   Not that it is a bad thing, but you're in the wrong forum with this kind of posting.  No offense, no harm done, no bad feelings, but you're in the wrong place.

You need to go somewhere else.

I mean more valuable in that Randolph can come in and pitch over an inning.  He can get both lefty and righty hitters out.  Miller can only pitch to one or 2 hitters at a time and he can't get a righty hitter out to save his life.

I understand baseball enough to know that if Miller keeps pitching like he is pitching and Randolph keeps pitching like he is pitching, there is a good chance that Miller will not be around when Lidge comes back.

Randolph looks like he can do a good job in Houston.  We will just have to see what happens.

67
Talk Zone / Re: White off DL; McLemore optioned to RR
« on: June 18, 2007, 10:15:35 am »
Then you don't understand the difference between a left handed reliever and a left handed specialist.  Miller is a LH specialist.

I understand it.  Isn't a guy who can get both left handers and right handers out more valuable than a specialist?

68
Talk Zone / Re: White off DL; McLemore optioned to RR
« on: June 18, 2007, 10:01:22 am »
You are allowed to "think" anything you want ... and even say it, for that matter.  *But* ... If you want anyone to take you seriously, you need to do a better job of understanding (1) the role of a left-handed relief specialist, and (2) how to evaluate same.

Alternatively, send your resume in to the Astros ... they may be looking for a change of perspective, and yours is certainly a change.

I would say that a left handed reliever who can strike out hitters and not allow many hits, walks, or runs and who could pitch an inning at a time to right and left handed hitters would be pretty valuable.

What is your evaluation of Trever Miller so far this season?

Talk Zone / Re: Tomorrow's lineup

You do know that Randolph played for Arizona in 2003-4 and was less than spectacular?

Also, which of those two goes into long relief?

Is Miller not allowed to have a slump?

I am going with what Randolph is doing now, not what he did in past seasons.  He has great stuff right now.  Hopefully, he can keep it going.

Borkowski and White would be the long men.

I think that Miller has had enough opportunities.  The league is hitting over .300 against him and his era is sky high over the last 30 days.

71
Talk Zone / Re: White off DL; McLemore optioned to RR

Based on the performance of Moehler and Miller? Or because Randolph and McLemore are superior pitchers? Or both?

Both,  Randolph has been dominate at AAA.  He pitched one inning in Houston and he struck out 3 hitters.  McLemore pitched 2 innings, struck out 5, and has an era of 0.00.  I don't see how you can send a guy down twice with an era of 0.00.  Miller has been bad lately.  I would go with the hot hand and see what happens.

72
Talk Zone / Re: White off DL; McLemore optioned to RR

It's simple. Miller and Moehler have the highest ERA, so they should be gone. Why can't Garner see that?

The GM and the owner probably have a say in it.  It might happen in a few weeks.  I hope Randolph doesn't lose his good stuff in the meantime.

I think that Garner will start Ensberg, Burke, Bruntlett at short and Loretta at 2nd.

I would rather start Scott every day in right.

Did rambo2 learn 2 new words while he was away (Probably,Yep) I'm use to seeing him use these words...biggio sucks,Biggios lousy batting average,Biggio should sit, Biggio should NOT lead off, Biggio should NOT be on the Astros Lmao.

You have never seen the word sucks in any post that I have ever made.

Biggio was a very good player and I am glad he has gotten some hits lately.  Hopefully he can go on a hot streak and get his average up.

So who plays 3b?

Probably Ensberg and sometimes Lamb.

someone will have to play SS for 4-8 weeks. who?

Probably Loretta part of the time and Bruntlett part of the time.  Bruntlett should probably play when Sampson is pitching.

So you've been watching baseball for 40 years, and you're still too stupid to see that Woody Williams isn't the problem on this team?

I feel more and more sorry for you every post.

You came in whining, and you haven't stopped yet.

GO AWAY.

So, you think that Williams can actually pitch.  Can you explain that one?

Pretty much that is what we do. Thats what makes it a good site.

Son the call has been made to you. Rise up and walk. Astros Daily is waiting for you to cross.

I am sorry I didn't realize.  I thought that this was a site that people liked to talk about the Astros.  I didn't realize that it is a site that people like to abuse each other.

thanks, Bob.

WFW, troll.

now fuck off and go away.

I came over here to talk about the Astros because I am a huge Astros fan.  I started going to the Dome when it opened in 65.  I got to see Mays, Aaron, Koufax, Clemente, McCovey and Gibson.  I grew up with the Astros and have remained a big fan.  The f this and f that and all the name calling is totally uncalled for.  Such behavior might be common for a bunch of drunks in a trailer park.  I certainly don't think it is a way to welcome a newcomer who is a huge fan of the Astros.

Anway lets hope that the Astros turn it around in Chicago.  The White Sox are really in a bad way right now.

How is this?

I think you're a fucking retard.

I think you're on your way out shortly.

I think I'm sick of all the bad baseball the Astros are playing, and you'd be too busy explaining why its Adam Everett and Woody Williams' fault to understand what I was sick of.

And lastly:

I think that you could take all of your baseball knowledge and put it in a baseball-off against a peanut from the dump I took after lunch and the peanut would mercy rule you in the 3rd inning.

I am sorry that you are unhappy.  I actually enjoy the Astros and talking about the Astros.  I hope you feel better.

You said if those two played every day, they will produce. Fine. I'm telling you that at times this season, they have played every day. Did Ensberg produce then? Is Scott producing now? What has actually taken place in that situation is a hell of a lot more important than what you say will happen in that situation.

And before you start asking more questions, answer mine: what the hell are you talking about? You jumped randomly from Biggio and Williams "killing the team", to declaring that Scott and Ensberg will produce if they play every day. What does one have to do with the other? Was this statement in response to something? Or is randomly blurting shit out just kinda something you do?
Yes, Scott is producing and so is Ensberg.

They did play Ensberg every day. They are playing Scott every day. What the hell are you talking about, and what are you responding to? Or was that just a general statement, apropos of nothing?

They haven't played Ensberg every day in a long time.  They platooned Scott with Lane.  When was the last time Scott had a start against a lefty?

Berkman, Ensberg, and Scott can still play.  When they play Ensberg and Scott everyday they will produce.

I can hear it now on August 19th.  There it is hit number 3000.  With that hit Biggio has brought his average up to .195.  Just listen to this crowd.

Biggio is hitting .111 in June and .188 over the last 30 days.  His bat speed is very slow. He has hit one ball out of the infield this week.  He just can't play anymore.  Ensberg is hot and needs to play everyday.  Scott needs to play everyday in right.  Take your pick at 2nd, either Loretta or Burke.

It will be very difficult for Biggio to get 21 more hits.  He looks totally over matched at the plate.  He might be able to get some against leftys.  His average will continue to drop.  He will be lucky to hit .220 this season.  It is sad to watch.

Williams should be released as soon as possible.  It ws a bad decision to sign him.  The GM might or should get fired for this decision.
