Good to see Martinez get a hit in his first at bat after yesterday's disaster.

Wow. Saw someone in the stand with a McCullers Astros jersey. Okay...

Lyles Houdinis a bases-loaded, no out situation there via the K and a 4-6-3 DP, which Cedeno nearly flubbed.

Lyles gets out of a no-out, bases-loaded jamb in T4 without allowing a run to score.  Middle 4: COL 1. HOU 0

Astros got a run in B4 to tie it up (JDM 2-2 today). Lyles got CarGo to strike out swinging (who flung his bat in disgust) to end T5.  Middle 5: COL 1, HOU 1

Misc. observation: Dominguez had another highlight-reel play in T5.  There is a lot of defensive promise on the IF for this team.

Another 'neither-here-nor-there' comment...

#Astros catcher Jason Castro named AL Player of the Week after batting .579 (11-for-19) with 3 HRs, 5 RBIs and 5 runs scored in 6 games.

I had to read that twice.

Carter had two nice scoops in that inning. Am I conveniently forgetting a lot of shitty plays, or is he actually decent at 1st? I know he had a lousy toss to Bud covering last week, but otherwise, seems like he's been OK.

I think you're conveniently forgetting a lot of crappy plays... But yes, he has had at least 3 (maybe more) very nice scoops today.  Middle 6: COL 1, HOU 1

He picks the ball just fine at 1B, he's just not very mobile. I have noticed him out of position on cutoffs at times, as well. Overall, with time to learn the position, I think he can be servicable at 1B. The outfield and base running are a whole different story. He always has a future in Wind Energy.

Still tied through T7.  Lyles at 109 pitches.  Middle 7: COL 1, HOU 1

I think he seems lazy.  He seems like he only wants to be a DH.

he pitched a scoreless 8th.
Then he'll be the winning pitcher unless the Astros can rally in bottom 9.

he pitched a scoreless 8th.

And is now in line for the W as Veras gives up the go ahead run in the top of the 9th.

I don't know about that.  He's been pretty effective at times this season.

He's been reviewing infrastructure that seems well-maintained and is not functionally obsolete.

Nice work, R. I hate missing these games while I'm on the road, so I really enjoy the recaps. Lyles has the stuff to be very good. He needed to develop a better answer for lefties, and this is still a work-in-progress. However, I'm encouraged by his last few outings.

Thanks, Mr. H and Ron. Just looked up Lyles' 2013 splits. He's actually handled lefties better than righties so far this year- .250 BA/.756 OPS compared to .315/.857. Hopefully both of those numbers will continue to come down, but he's certainly turned things around from March.

Were his outings longer last year, given that Porter seems to be taking him out now before hs Oswalt inning?

You're welcome. His success is directly tied to his success against lefties, who blistered him last season (.300/.368/.518/.886). The ability to handle lefties prevents other managers from loading the lineup with lefties, which is what happened a lot last season.

I feel like it was usually the 5th last year, sometimes the 4th.
