If they can't make it work, what hope is there for the rest of us?

Watch for K-Fed to file for alimony. This could be fun. They could have Judge Judy adjudicate the proceedings.

That's almost as bad as the Ryan Phillipe/Reese Witherspoon breakup.
He made 2 million last year, she made 30 million. They have no prenup and reside in California.
She may have to pay him alimony.

I wonder how much he'll make this year starring in Flags of Our Fathers, Five Fingers, and Breach. Has she done anything since Walk the Line?

You act as if that's a bad thing.

Nobody who made $2M last year needs alimony. I don't understand why alimony isn't subject to some sort of needs-testing.

Alimony is a maintenance item, not a need item.

Actually, I'm wishing my wife made more money.

I started with the "alimony" thing, but perhaps that's the wrong word. I believe Texas is quite an advantageous State in which to get divorced, because the law simply requires a division of the assets gained whilst married (plus child support if applicable). For K-Fed or Phillippe, they should get their half of their wives' major moolah (perhaps not so much for Fed because she mostly disappeared once she hooked up with him).

One of the downsides of reading multiple news sources:
"She declared in court papers that she and Federline have no community assets, which indicates they had a prenuptial agreement and don't want to disclose their divorce settlement to the court, said Leon Bennett, a Los Angeles divorce attorney who does not represent either party."

Yep. There's no alimony in Texas. And maintenance is very limited and tough to get.

Britney Spears told husband of two years Kevin Federline that she was divorcing him via a text message while he was recording a TV interview... The wannabe rapper, 27, was filming a segment for MuchMusic in Canada at the time. He interrupted the interview and stormed off, returning 30 minutes later visibly upset.

Is Texas the only state with that?

Isn't there spousal support for 2 years? Which may run the same time as the separation? And if I'm not mistaken either spouse may be required to pay.

There is spousal maintenance, but it's hard to get. First, you have to have been married for at least ten years, second there has to be a good reason to get it (spouse is disabled or the managing conservator of a disabled kid), plus the person seeking maintenance must not be able to support him/herself. I think the maximum time limit is 3 years. But, all in all, it's hard to qualify for and pretty limited. The maximum amount given is the lesser of $2500/month or 20% of the other spouses gross monthly income. (I can't believe I still remember this stuff).
One can get court-ordered support during separation but that ends at the divorce.

Not bad, he gets $30,000 bucks a month for half the time they were married. That ought buy him some more recording time.

I heard somewhere it was an "iron-clad" pre-nup, which for some reason at the time brought to mind a large Craftsman bench vise, with Federline's balls in it.
BTW, it wasn't a surprise or anything, but skimming around the cable spectrum last night, where practically every channel was giving straight news about the elections, or at least customizing some angle to them, Nancy Grace God Bless Her was haranguing about something totally off subject, I don't even remember what it was. . . Anna Nicole in Bermuda, perhaps, a story I have never been able to comprehend; or maybe another late report on the mother from Florida who killed herself six months ago after her baby went missing and is still missing but she's STILL THE PRIME SUSPECT. The Dems just overthrew the government, and Nancy's trying too hook up with Mark Fuhrman or Alan Derschowitz for SOME PERSPECTIVE ON THIS STORY.
It's at times like these you really appreciates consistency and continuity in life.

It wasn't a Massey pre-nup, was it?

I always thought that "Intolerable Cruelty" was a very underrated moved. In particular, I thought that this exchange was really funny, but maybe it's because I'm a lawyer and it reminded me of some of my own settlement negotiations.
Quote:
Miles Massey: All right, so much for the ice-breakers. What are you after, Freddy?
[takes a drink of water]
Freddy Bender: My client is prepared to settle for 50 percent of the marital assets.
[Miles spits out some water]
Miles Massey: Why only 50, Freddy? Why not a hundred? While we're dreaming, why not 150? Are you familiar with "Kershner"?
Freddy Bender: "Kershner" does not apply.
Miles Massey: Bring this to trial, we'll see if "Kershner" applies.
Rex: What's "Kershner"?
Miles Massey: Please, let me handle this.
Freddy Bender: "Kershner" was in Kentucky.
Miles Massey: "Kershner" was in Kentucky?
Freddy Bender: "Kershner" was in Kentucky.
Miles Massey: All right, Freddy, forget "Kershner". What's your bottom line?
Freddy Bender: Primary residence, 30 percent of remaining assets.
Miles Massey: What, are you nuts? Have you forgotten "Kershner"?

What an awesome show. After this sequence, when Freddy is leaving and Miles saying "it's a negotiation". Classic. Clooney is much better in his comedies than his dramatic stuff.

Here is the video. Not nearly as dramatic as I had hoped. You can fast forward through the ass kissing and see it unfold at about 1:40 in.
