Title: AFL and HWL
Post by: Jacksonian on October 11, 2006, 12:04:03 pm
We thought we'd post a sticky of the important Arizona Fall League and Hawaii Winter League websites.

Main AFL Website. Astros farmhands are on the Mesa Solar Sox.

Mesa Solar Sox website. You can access the Sox schedule, roster, and stats from here.  Access the schedule to see all boxscores for the Sox.

Main HWL page. Astros farmhands are on the Honu North Shore.  From here you can get stats, boxscores, and game summaries.  Click the HONU graphic at the top for links to the Honu North Shore roster and stats.

his HWB season ended after just three games due to a stress fracture in his right leg.
Title: BA recaps HWL & AFL
Post by: Duman on October 19, 2006, 10:48:33 am
Baseball America is recapping both leagues games.  However, there are a few problems.  They have confused Matt Torbert with Beau Torbert.  They have the outfielder from the Astros System playing ss/2b for the Mesa Solar Sox instead of the Twins Prospect.  The mistake is make on the recap for the 12th  & the 17th.

Thanks for clearing that up ... I saw "Beau Tolbert" (I think it was with an "L" not an "R") at 2B as a HOU prospect and was not a little confused.
Title: Way to go, Mr. Albers...
Post by: Greg D on October 19, 2006, 11:41:11 pm
Four perfect innings for Matt in today's AFL contest versus Scottsdale.

Also congrats to Hunter Pence, who was 3-4 with a couple of two-baggers and a pair of RBIs. After a slow start, he's now hitting .333. (And today's game came on top of the tres swipes in yesterday's game.)

On more of a bummer note, C Lou Santangelo (though obviously facing pitchers with more experience than he's used to) took the 0fer in the game and is just 2-15 after five games.

For whatever reason, Albers is my favorite guy from the upcoming group of players.  But my question is about Troy Patton.  He is getting slapped around so far in the AFL and his performance this year was not stellar.  Now that Hirsh and Albers are MLbers, I guess Patton is the Stros top pitching prospect.  Do you know what impressions he is making on the Astros as he now entering a higher level of competition?  Still a future rotation guy or has some liability arisen that has destined him for the bullpen?  Thanks in advance for any feedback and thanks also for all the kick ass info you and Jacksonian provide.

Though four outings and six innings isn't much of a sample size, Patton has actually done quite well so far in the AFL. Three of his four appearances have been scoreless ones, and a 1.17 WHIP and a 7:2 strikeout to walk ratio in those 6 IP ain't exactly something to be ashamed of. Particularly in the hitter-friendly AFL. There's nothing at this point that would indicate the Astros see him as anything other than a rotation guy. Though he struggled some at the beginning of the year, I don't think management had any reason to feel disappointed with his 2006 season (Carolina League managers did  vote him 3rd best prospect in the league). Absent some sort of lights out spring training, he'll start next season again at AA but he's likely to be in an Astros uni sometime in the latter half of the year (even if only as a September callup). Consistent mechanics and development of his changeup are gonna be keys to how well he does in the future, I think.

He is what, 20 or 21, so him being at AA at 20 or 21 is still very good.  He might even crap the ML staff at 22 or 23, which is around when Roy did, right?

Troy turned 21 in Sept.  Tim P told Garner last spring not to even say Troy's name until he was 21.  He's 21 now.  We'll see what the spring holds.

his AFL season is over as he's been removed from the Solar Sox roster. Don't know at this stage whether there was an injury involved or if this was simply something planned from the outset.

went 4-5 in Tuesday's game with a pair of 2-run homers. He's hitting .520 (13-25) over his last six games with eight RBIs. On the season, he's batting .367/.415/.612.

From BA's latest update on the AFL:

Quote:

Not especially known for his defensive prowess, Pence has been playing a solid center field** for the Solar Sox as well. "He's the guy that jumps out at me the most right now," (Solar Sox Manager and former Astro Pat) Listach said. "He can really run for a big guy. He's strong, he's disciplined, he keeps his head in the game all the time. He's shown both pull and oppo power. He doesn't have a textbook approach at the plate, but he just gets it done."

**Pence may be playing solid defense in the AFL but it generally hasn't been in CF. He's played just two games and part of another in CF. Most of his games thus far have seen him playing his usual RF. But it's still good that he's getting some continued exposure to the centerfield spot.

I'm not sure why you should be kidding regarding Carlos Lee.  I think the the presence of Pence does complicate things for the Astros in their free agent dealings this winter.  Signing long-term, expensive corner outfield free agents doesn't make a lot of sense if Pence and Scott will be around.  On the other hand, if Pence can play center, and I presume that is a big if, then TP has much more flexibility.

While I was impressed last year, and could be wrong, I don't think Scott is a long term solution to the OF.

And having Lee and Pence would make a nice OF IMO.  Although I would rather have Vernon Wells playing CF, than Taveras.... But we don't have Lee or Wells so it is all just a wait and see type thing.

I could see Luke Scott playing the Jeriome "15-game winner" Robertson role in a trade, although that's probably short-changing him some.
Title: BA talks about Patton's change up
Post by: Duman on October 27, 2006, 02:53:46 pm
"Out here, it's been my number two pitch for me," Patton said. "I always like to establish fastballs, but I've been going to it a lot. Catchers seem to want to call it a lot, so that's always a good thing. I didn't use it as much in Corpus as I did in Salem, but really, that pitch went hand-in-hand with my success."

Very interesting, especially given statements from Purp/Bennett that mastery/consistency of the change is one of the final hurdles to consideration for the bigs.
Title: Pence's defense...
Post by: Greg D on October 31, 2006, 02:22:45 am
More raves coming in about Hunter's defense in the AFL:

Quote:

"He's the best guy out here right now," Solar Sox manager Pat Listach said. "There is nothing that screams fundamentals as far as hitting goes, but his defense has been outstanding."

From a scout:

"For me, he can play all three spots, with enough arm strength and power to be a legitimate everyday right fielder. But he's also showed enough burst and range to play center if you need him there. He's proven he can do a little bit of everything defensively--he's no longer a liability. He's a big league quality outfielder."

What do you think about Pence's chances of making the 25 man roster out of Spring Training if he does something similar to what Luke Scott did a couple of years ago?

That will depend, at least in part, on what Purpura does between now and then.

from Solar Sox roster. We'll try to get some details as to whether it was an injury or simply a planned move, though we'd suspect the latter at this point since they're hadn't been anything earlier to indicate he had suffered or been playing with any sort of ailment.

Edited to add:

Received confirmation that it was NOT injury-related.

Sure it's possible that he'll be back in the starting rotation come the start of next season (if for no other reason to give him a sufficent workload). However, Reineke has been generally projected as a reliever if he makes it to the major league level. The success he had out of the CC bullpen (2.10 ERA, 29 K's in 25.2 IP) certainly was an indicator of that.

ETA: Never mind: I just saw the edit on the previous post saying that it's not injury-related.

The lefty made his first AFL start (10th outing overall) in today's game versus Phoenix and was awesome. He retired all nine batters he faced in his 3-inning stint, whiffing eight of those with all but one going down swinging.

Yow!
