Title: 6-5 Cardinals
Post by: pravata on September 13, 2006, 12:58:11 am
Mike Lamb opened this see saw battle in the top of the 1st inning by knocking an 0-1 fastball into the right field seats.

In the 2nd, Luke Scott lead off with a double.  Burke, fouled an attempted bunt for strike 2, and swung through strike 3.  Bruntlett was the next batter, Molina saved a wild pitch during the ab which ended with a sac fly to center.  Ausmus walked, but Pettitte grounded out to short.  Opportunity missed.

In the 3rd, Lamb lined a double down the 1b line, Berkman struck out, Huff lined out to 3rd. Opportunity missed.

In the top the 3rd, the Cardinals got their first hit; with one on, a walk to Miles, Preston Wilson homered.  The next batter, Spezio beat a grounder to the hole to the right of 3rd.  Rex Jones and Garner ran out to the mound to check Pettitte.

He left the game, the initial diagnosis, left elbow flexor strain, day to day.

Chris Sampson gets Pujols to ground out to short.

The Astros load the bases in the 4th.  With one out Palmeiro shoots a 2 run single up the middle.  With runners 1st and 2nd, Taveras grounds to short, Miles to Belliard to Pujols for a slick dp. 3-2 Astros.

Encarnacion triples in the right field corner with one out in the bottom of the 4th.  Huff had some trouble digging it out.  Borkowski gets Belliard to chop 6-3 on the drawn in infield.  But Molina goes and gets a low pitch and pops a run scoring single to center. 3-3.

The Cardinals pull ahead in the bottom of the 5th.  Spezio bounces a ground rule double off the right field line into the seats.  Then they IBB Pujols.  Borkowski paints the outside corner on Rolen.  Rolen crosses his eyes at home plate ump Tim Tschida.  Then Borkowski finds the inside corner for the K looking and Rolen gets pissy.  He?s tossed.  LaRussa minces out and Tschida tells him, ?I?m not going to take that bullshit, ok??.  Encarnacion grounds the next pitch to left scoring the run anyway.  4-3 Cardinals.

In the top of the 6th, after Scott walked, Burke works an increasingly whiny Weaver to a 3-1 count.  Then blasts a grooved fastball over the ?c? in the Big Mac zone, way up there.  5-3 Astros.

Taveras opens the 7th with an Acme Co. double.  He deadens a bunt to the pitcher.  The pitcher rushes the throw, it flies by the 1b and Taveras is standing on 2nd.  Beep.  Beep.  Lamb taps a roller down the 1b line, he?s tagged, Taveras is on 3rd, one out.  Berkman Ks swinging, at this point he?s 0-4 with 3 Ks.  Huff flies out to left.  Opportunity missed.

Qualls and Wheeler work the 7th and 8th with no more damage than a walk.

In the top the 9th, with one out, Taveras scoots a grounder down the 1b line for a real double.  Lamb Ks swinging, they IBB Berkman and Huff lines out to center. Opportunity missed.

Lidge is on for the 9th.   Left handed pinch hitter John Rodriguez opens the inning with a single on a 3-2 count.  Vizcaino sac bunts.  Preston Wilson Ks on a 2-2 slider.  Lidge hits Spezio on the back foot on the first pitch.  Pujols lines a 1-2 slider into left for a 2 run double.  Game over, 6-5 Cardinals.

Oswalt at 1:05 tomorrow.
