Title: A look at the final 29 games

During last night's TV broadcast, you saw a graphic predicting Clemens' last 6 starts.

Looking at how the schedule plays out, if you assume, like FSN did, that Clemens will pitch every 5th day when possible, you get the following:

Clemens, Oswalt, and Pettitte: 6 starts a piece.
That leaves 11 games for other starters, like Hirsh, Wandy, and Backe.

It also sets up Pettitte to pitch in a 1-game playoff on normal rest on the Monday following the Braves series.


The Astros are going to have to earn it, playing many current .500 or better teams (19 of 22 after today), unlike the Phillies (0 remaining).

According to Footer The Link (See Weekend Rotation) it looks like the Astros might go with a 4 man rotation alternating between Wandy and Hirsh as the 4th man.  Not sure if they plan to keep this up until the end of the season or if this is just the plan to do battle with the Stem.

Yeah, but aren't those spoiler teams a lot tougher to beat most of the time in pennant races?  I like that the Astros will have to earn it, cause they'll be battle-tested for the playoffs if they do get in. They need to stay above .500 first, before really talking about playoffs.

No short rest starts yet.  Rotation remains the same for the Mets series.

Pivotal series coming up.  Our opponents are flagging, but if the Mets keep rolling this weekend then it could be adios amigos.  I'm thinking a loss to Glavine (Wandy's gonna get lit up), 50/50 for Hirsh's start and Roy's is a must-win.

The sweep of the Brewers made it possible to lose 2 of 3 and still keep up the .667 clip that seems to be the concensus target.

Game 1 against Whiner II.  We haven't seen that puke in a while.  I think that's the game to steal.

I'm not sure the Astros have scored enough runs in total in previous starts against Glavine to offset what the GDM's offense is going to do to Wandy tonight.

Conversely, if Hirsh can hold his end up, I think they can take Mai...fuck.  OK, tonight it is.

If the Astros pull Wandy after 3 innings then they probably have a shot.  He seems to fall apart right around the 4th inning. Probably due to the fact that his stuff works the first time thru the order but not the second.

Backe is having Tommy John surgery. Also, they didnt trade for Boomer Wells.  Apparently the Astros couldnt provide a list of players to be named later as vague as was the Padres, nor is their money "any good here" according to Theo Epstein.  Their other options are Buchholz, Albers, or Borkowski.  Purpura foolishly did not have a Plan L.
