WARNING: it is long and anecdotal.

Excellent.

Who's the ghost writer?

That was an outstanding read.
-
Bravo, Coach. One hell of a run.
-
Thanks, coach. Very good read. I knew they kept you around here for something...well, besides the F-offs.
-
My goodness, an article from you and AndyZipp in the same season. The only thing missing for 2006 is Kevin's overdue proclimation that the Astros are beginning their playoff run.
Very nice article, Jim. I appreciate the candid peek into the mechanics of teamwork done right.
-
Enjoyed every word of that, thanks.
-
thanks, guys

It's not overdue. It's just that the team aren't ready to start their run yet. When they are, Kevin will tell us.

Very nice. You have a gift for capturing the reader's attention. Do your briefs read like this?
I'll admit to enjoying your story vicariously, as well. It reminded me very much of my school's run at the state playoffs my junior year. Your story was more dramatic, though, and you guys got farther.
If I had realized at the time my coach actually thought about the stuff he did, like you (the best part of your article, to me), I might not have been such a pain in his ass back then.
Thanks.

A fine read. Not a bad coach, that Jim R. guy.
-
Nice job coach, you make the reader feel like they were there along for the ride.
-
thank you. it was fun.
-
Thanks Jim. Enjoyable tail, indeed. Aren't you supposed to be some crusty bastard?
-
dunno, never thought of myself that way. some do, i suppose.
-
Only had a chance to read part of it (my lunch break is only an hour long) but what i have read so far is outstanding. I hope you get a chance to forward it to some of your players and their families.
Thanks for sharing, looking forward to reading the rest.
-
sent it to Belisle a bit ago. his is the only email address i have.
thanks.
-
Just poking fun at your reputation. There are alot of folks in the world who are simply over-sensitive or self-appointed victims. Again, enjoyed the story. I hope those kids realize how lucky they were to have a coach with your attitude. I've had coaches similar to you and ones that were hard-asses. I think I learned more from the coaches who emphasized attitude and not just winning and losing.
-
thanks
-
Wow, what an excellent article. Thanks for sharing Jim.
-
Great read, Jim!
Kinda reminds me of Temple's back-to-back runs my last two years in HS, but we never got further than the Sweet 16.
-
Thanks Coach, that was a pleasure to read.
-
Ditto what everyone else has said. Very well written. The question I would have is: What's it like to watch one of your ex-players pitch against your favorite team? I would imagine it to be somewhat conflicting. Again, excellent piece.
-
i was at his start in Houston. i rooted for him to pitch a strong 7 innings and for the Astros to beat their pen.
-
Just read it. Excellent article. You know how much I like Robstown baseball. Great story.
-
what is your connection to Robstown? ask Mark about the stuff i did not put in here about our experience there. what an atmosphere, but it was so much fun that it made their nervousness go away. the Robstown coach was a real character, to say the least. that was some day, but they were fine after the game was over. Calallen was a different story.
thanks.
-
I dated a girl that graduated from there. Her cousin played for them back in the early 90s. When her sister was still in school, we used to go some of the games and I always enjoyed myself. The games against CC Calallen were a lot of fun to see.

Robstown was like playing against a small college team with a rabid fan-base. Thousands of people, all in red, crammed in to that ballpark. BLARING Tejano music. Roaring every time something good happened. Booing obnoxiously every time something didn't go their way.
Playing in front of a crowd like that will make any team a slight bit better, with the adrenaline blasting through their system.

the coach was a good guy, but he tried to put a hex on us with voodoo or something. he would make X or cross marks in the dirt in the batters' box, and once, he carried a foul ball all the way to the mound and handed it to Belisle. on the way out there, he was making those marks on the ball with his fingers as fast as he could move his hands. Mark tried to get the first base umpire to charge Robstown with a trip to the mound, but he just laughed.
another strange thing: our third baseman was ejected for a too aggressive headfirst slide. his replacement played little that year, but he did great in the game. during his single AB, he hit THREE fans with foul balls in different spots in the park. that has to be a record.
Mark: or be paralyzed and intimidated by the atmosphere. you guys were not scared. great times.

Couldn't hear them coming with that 'music' and all I guess.

It was one of the craziest things I've ever seen. 3 balls sprayed to 3 completely different parts of the park. And *WHAP* each one drilled someone, at least one was completely unsupecting.

yeah, the last one got some poor guy who was standing at the concession stand buying a sno cone or something and BONK.
