Every World Cup, the "three lions" put on one horror show and one beatdown of someone who should've done better. Then we go out meekly in the quarter-finals - usually to the eventual winner (or at least finalist).
That's the howler out of the way. T&T will be dispatched on Thursday making the Sweden game moot. Uruguay will be thumped in the next round, before Portugal derails England in the quarters. You heard it here first...
Oh, and if Sven plays Rooney in any group match, he's even more retarded than I think he is already. He's fucking clueless. His squad selection is a joke and his substitutions / formation changes are insane.

Why the hell is regional college baseball on ESPN and the World Cup is on the Deuce? (Just pisses me off because I get ESPNHD and NOBODY gets ESPN2HD.) You would think the WC would be considered the "bigger" event of the two, wouldn't you?

shit, no. communist sport.

I'm trying to get into watching the Cup. It's taking me a while to appreciate soccer (I think it's how many feel about baseball) but I do really enjoy the hyper-nationalism of the spectators and the passion of the players.
Also, the player for Brazil Ronaldhino is very obnoxious and he is the heel of the tournament. Ever since he was in that Nike commercial I couldn't stand him (where it displayed film him being a showboat from youth until present day).

Really. Watching soccer when there's baseball being played. What, do you have to squat to piss too?

DirecTV carries ESPNHD and ESPN2HD. As for which is the bigger event, it depends on who's doing the considering.

True, and thanks for the info on DirecTV. Although I doubt that Rice/OU is being broadcast in HD, which brings me back to my original point.
I wasn't aware DirecTV had picked up ESPN2HD. For the longest time, it seemed that there was this new HD channel out there (ESPN2HD) and nobody carried it. Not satellite, not cable, nobody. I'm hoping Time Warner comes around eventually because I really don't want to switch to dish, but stuff like this may turn me around soon.

What's the score of the Rice game? I don't have TV at work and the feed through ESPN is "temporarily unavailble".
-
After that dog of a game (US loses 3-0), it appears ESPN probably made the correct call.

Bottom of the 2nd, tied 2-2.

At least they didn't put World Cup on the "Ocho." Nobody has that.

You can pull up a gametracker through riceowls.com It's not as nice as Gameday, but it'll do.

Thanks. It's much nicer than I expected. Of course, I tune in just in time to see OU take a lead. Maybe I should turn it off.

Not complaining cause I get to hear it, but the Rice announcers on KTRU are idiots.

I haven't listened to a Rice game on KTRU in a few years, but they have pretty much always been horrible. I'm pretty sure the color man is whatever student wants to do it.

Not surprising. He doesn't know the rules.

Czech 3-0 over US. A billion orange slices and popsicles for this?

There is talk around the media that Ronaldino is probably the most famous grimace...errr...face in world sports, but is death to any advertising campaign because he's got terminal face-ache.
Genius player, however. Probably better than Pele by the time he's finished.

The pickings were so sparse that I shut off the DirecTV HD service several months ago. It was $13 per month for five channels, and they didn't even include locals. I had to use an off-air antenna, which sucked.
I called back a couple of weeks ago, and they now have NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox in HD, plus ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, Discovery, Universal, HDNET, HDMovies, plus, if you have movie channels, you get HBO and Showtime HD channels. Also, it's a couple of bucks cheaper now.
They say by end of 2007 they'll have 170 HD channels. Not sure how much programming will actually be in HD, but it's probably worth the investment at this point.
Just the chance to cancel on those bastards at Time Warner is worth its weight in gold.

USA got sucker-punched twice in the first half, and (after having been on top for everything other than the all-important goals stat) were out-classed in the second. Czech Rep. are #2 ranked in the world behind Brazil, and they were very, very clinical and efficient today. Scored 3 cracking goals too.
USA need Italy to fuck up today (scoreless with Ghana after 30 mins as I type), and then beat them on Saturday. No one's dead until they're dead. there's not enough games in the group stage for anything to be over this early.
-
Yeah- but I see no way that we beat Italy, so I guess they need the checks (sp- I know) to go 3-0 and Italy to tie Ghana and the US to tie Italy and beat Ghana.
I don't see it happening. We are dead in goal differential I would have to think.

Right. Having been beaten by the Czechs, the best thing for the US is for the Czechs to run the table. Then if you can beat Italy and Ghana, you're in. It's still in your own hands.
(Update: Italy 1-0 over Ghana at half-time).

Did the Rice broadcast just die, or should I be taking this personally? I just mailed them the last $50 tuition payment.

It's personal. They said you weren't enough of a homer.

Awww man. That broadcast may have sucked, but no broadcast sucks bigger.

I don't see any way that the US beats Italy. If the eyetalians hold on then I think the US is screwed. I was hoping for a fluky tie at best with Italy. Even if so, and they take care of business against the africans then we get slaughtered on goal differential. Not a good day for the Yanks.

Anyone see that UGa performance Saturday. Five consecutive HR's... I bet that's never even been done on MVP '06.
-
i was on a UT team that hit 4 consecutive HRs at Baylor's park. our pitcher was the 5th hitter, and he was a good hitter who was strong enough to hit one out. he swung from his heels and popped up foul to the catcher. our bench booed him as he returned to the dugout.

I was once in the middle of three guys hitting HRs. The two guys a head of me did, then I singled. The next guy homered. The guys gave me shit for hitting like a girl they said. I am/was not much of a power hitter. I hit .396 my senior year in HS, but did not hit a HR. A scout told me that if I'd have done that lefthanded, he'd have been interested, but because I did it right handed, he wasn't impressed.

Perfect- you are absolutely perfect for the part, congratulations. That's what I'd be telling you if you were 1 inch taller. Next.

I'm kind of pulling this out of my ass, BUT I believe LSU hit five consecutive homeruns in '97 prior to the changes of the bat regulations. CJM can probably tell me whether I'm full of it or not.

The five consecutive homers tied the NCAA record set on April 10, 1998 by Eastern Illinois vs. Morehead State.

Two quotes that scouts told me...honest to goodness:
Scout: Can you hit lefthanded?
Me: No sir.
Scout: Then what good are you?
Another one...
Scout: You plan on going to college, son?
Me: Yes sir.
Scout: Good.

My last year was 1991 so it was well after my time, but that 1997 team did some impressive things. I seem to remember a game that they hit 8 or 9 HRs in. I don't remember the year (late 90's), it might have been '97 but I don't know how many (if any) were consecutive. I want to say it was regional game, but I'm not sure.

April 8, 1967 -- 7th inning. Still tied for second-most consecutive HR, along with eight other instances (entering 2006).

That's funny HH. Did you get that my post was a simpsons reference to when bart tries to be radioactive boy?
That's what your scenario reminded me of anyway.

I didn't get the Simpsons reference, but I understood the sentiment. I got "invited" to several professional tryouts and workouts right after high school. It didn't take long to realize they weren't interested in me, it's just that they needed someone to catch the pitchers they wanted to look at. Still, it was supposed to be somewhat of an honor. More than one time I heard one of the scouts tell someone "what are you bitchin about, we're feeding you lunch, aren't we?"

I had the opposite problem. My last year of ball I hit .196, but I led the team in HR. I kept getting under the ball and driving it. Everytime the ball hit my bat, it was either a HR or a fly ball. I still have trouble hitting it on the ground.

BTW, just as confirmation for how much OU really does suck, their second baseman intentionally threw a ball into the stands, hitting a fan, while warming up in the field the inning after Rice put up the go-ahead 5-run spot.

Intentionally? There's got to be more to this story. How do you know it was intentional? Give us details.
