Let's assume Clemens is signed. What is your next move to get this team hitting and pitching to win games?
Do you go for another starting pitcher? Some power in the outfield?
Who are you willing to give up for said player?
-
I'll even start--Jason Lane and Zeke Astacio for Gary Matthews, Jr.
-
I'm looking for an OF, not a SP. In fact, I'm hoping for Backe to come back and show his health for a couple of starts, and then trying to spin him and Jimerson for an OF.
My ideal process:
1. Clemens returns to active roster, replacing Nieve. Nieve to the pen, Gallo DFA.
2. Backe off DL, Buchholz to pen, Bork to AAA.
3. Backe/Jimerson/probably another A pitcher for Torii Hunter.

Are you going to move Buchholz back to starter after trading for Hunter? And are you putting Willy or Torii in CF?
-
Yep. Hirsh is my first callup in case of injury.
-
And Torii goes in CF, and whoever's hitting among Preston, Willy, Jason and Chris can man the corner spots.
I started off looking at corner OF, but other than Craig Wilson, I don't see who will be available.

Carl Crawford The Link ? Also, left handed relief help Jeremy Affeldt The Link might help

Crawford could be a good fit. Haven't looked at Affeldt to share my opinion.

I'm not a Crawford fan.
Crawford, career: .289/.322/.420
Wilson, career: .265/.331/.473
Although CC does have the virtue of being lefthanded, fast, and cheap.
-
But Crawford never mashed in Colorado...
-
Of course... just pointing out that he's, to this point, been more hype than production.

He might be cheap as far as his own salary goes, but prying him away from the D-Rays would be anything but cheap.

I want to see Scott get another shot before we make a deal. He's getting ready to hit another one of his streaks in AAA. I know he's basically 0-2 in the bigs so far, but he's the lefty power bat this lineup needs if he could just take the next step....and he costs us nothing. Give him another 2-3 week shot, that's all I ask.
My guess is that confidence is all that's holding him back. If he can come up and have a successful game or two out the gate....look out.
-
Scott appears disinterested in RR. i am off his bandwagon b/c i believe he is pouting and not giving maximum effort every night. i'd prefer Jimerson.
-
Wow. So, do you think Jimmerson is the real deal?
-
I can't help but think 1 of the 3 young pitchers (Wandy, Buchholtz, and Nieve) weren't "auditioning" in the majors. How many teams out there want/need young pitching? I can think of Cincinatti, Florida, Tampa, and maybe Minnesota. All of those teams have appealing options but too many variables (i.e. salary, yrs remaining under club control, etc...) that I haven't a clue how one would gauge equal value.
In my dream world, Astros give up Buchholtz and Lane for Hunter. Is that realistic? I wouldn't know but I like that deal. Maybe add in Burke if Minny throws in a minor leaguer.
Jim, I've read two knocks on Jimerson: First, he can't read off-speed pitches and, second, he doesn't cover the plate very well. I take it from your comments that this changed.
-
das: not necessarily, but he could be if he would get through his thick skull that he can make lots of money putting the ball in play.
Tom: he has made huge strides this year, and my buddy Mike Capps attributes a large part of his improvement to McEwing.
i would NOT give up Buchholz.
-
Happy B'day Tom...
-
Why in the world would you want to give up Buchholz?
And precisely which Hunter are you trying to acquire. Torii? He of the .268 .332 .448 season?
-

Damn it. I hate to hear that. I just looked at his numbers yesterday and they looked pretty good....278avg, .403obp & .534slg. Too bad. I hope he makes an attitude adjustment soon, otherwise that will be quite a waste of talent.
-
Thanks re: Jimmerson.
Besides Oswalt, Bucholz is the one other pitcher I really wanted to see when the Astros were in DC. The flashes of brilliance portend great things IMO. Very different than say, a Redding.
I could have done without the Pettitte performance. No way to unsee that.

You've also just described Josh Anderson, sans MLB experience.
-
OK, first, I don't want to give up Buchholtz but I was thinking value for value. And yes, that Torii Hunter. I'm familiar with his offensive stats. Have you seen the guy play defense??? If Houston liked Beltran, I'd put Hunter in that class, if not higher defensively. Not to mention he adds proven run production (90-100 rbi a year).
Personally, I like Buchholtz. And if he can figure out what he's doing wrong when he gets shelled, and can correct it, he's going to be a beast.
... thanks ETA

That's outstanding news. Hopefully Jimerson gets a chance to prove you right. McEwing? Why does this guy get screwed over so much. He seems to contribute everywhere he goes but no one finds room for the guy. I realize it's a numbers game. He seems like a player's player.
On Buchholtz, I'm not saying toss him into a deal for a marginal contributor. But the right deal for a high impact player (and no, I don't mean a "franchise" player)? Seriously, if we are playing this game of imaginary GM, shouldn't there be some realistic parameters to the proposals? You aren't going to get a great player without throwing some value back at the other team.

Jimerson gets a hit 49% of the time he puts the ball in play...
For reference, Berkman gets a hit 35% of the time and Pujols gets a hit 34% of the time...

I wonder if the Marlins would be willing to trade Cabrera and what it would take to get him on the Astros.
Rumors out of Philadelphia is that the Phillies/Marlins/Yankees have a deal where Willis goes to Philly, Abreu goes to NY, and lots of prospects go to Florida. If the Marlins are trading Willis, maybe Cabrera won't be far behind.
I agree with those who wouldn't trade Buchholtz. I think he's going to be a really good pitcher -- the recent blowups notwithstanding. And I'd like to keep Hirsch. But anyone else would be fair game for Cabrera.

Check the splits, and past years. April was an aberration, and he's bouncing back nicely.

How do you figure that? His career numbers are .267 .321 .458. Seems like he's doing what he always does.
In a full season, he's going to strike out ~100 times, walk ~30 times, hit ~24 homers and knock in ~85 RBI. (Whoever said he consistantly knocks in 90 to 100, he's only had over 80 RBI 4 times in his career.)
We already have this (offensive) player. His name is Preston Wilson.

You're right. I was looking at career splits instead of career totals.

What went wrong with the Abreu trade before? Didn't want to take on the money? I wouldn't mind taking NYYs spot in that.
-
money. the deal otherwise was done, but neither wanted to pay his salary. he is on the block as we speak. they want to move him to get more ABs for Delucci.

I'm willing to kick in a 20. Anybody else?

What's the deal with Abreu? I've seen his stats but never seen him play beyond the Phils games against Houston. The guy can hit. Is his defense that bad? Or are his offensive numbers misleading? Is he a headcase, bad attitude, or clubhouse cancer? Or just a valuable commodity that the Phils are willing to part with if it yields the pitching they need?
-
big contract. some attitude. trading a guy while he still has value for what they need.

I don't think anyone would give up any stinky perfume for him, either.

Leaving aside Lane's pathetic average, I have my serious suspicions about any team considering Zeke worth peanuts.
-
why is that, Zan? how much have you seen him pitch?
-
Also, what makes you think Gary Matthews' son is "worth peanuts"? He is off to a good start this year, at age 31.
Is it not too early to give up on Lane?
-
I absolutely think it's too early to give up on Lane. I never intended to imply otherwise. I think he'll be good. I wouldn't want to trade him straight up for Matthews Jr.
And I think Zeke can be a good pitcher.
I just doubt that a team with a viable shot at the playoffs will offer someone having a good season for two players who don't seem like they'd help immediately. But I could be wrong.

Just the way his season has gone seems really bizarre to me- 9 homers, and a ridiculously-improved walk rate, yet the constant Mendoza struggle. I haven't been able to see any games this year, so I have no idea what to make of it. It's almost as weird as his swing.
Shouldn't he be expected to snap out of it in a big way eventually?
-
One can only hope that he snaps out of it. I am no huge fan, but then again I was not an Morgan fan. (not that that matters)

Since Burke has come back from the DL, Lane has been on the bench. He's started only 1 of the last 6 games. Garner has said the benching "is not to clear his head". I'd say we're about a week late in noticing that they have.

MLB bigwigs say that Lane's problem is he has become entirely too pull-oriented. In every bad at bat he has had this year, he is being worked away away away.
Every one of his homers has been to the left side of the ballpark, but you can't hit away pitches to the right side.
And if you're taking a pull swing on an outside soft pitch... Well, the ball won't go too far.

Lane is still a better long term option than Wilson, at least at this point. He has shown consistent power in the past, and is showing a some this year, despite his struggles with the average.

The problem is that Lane has yet to establish himself in a full season. And he may have played himself out of the opportunity to do so this year.

No problemo. I'll try to keep the banality flowing.

I agree with everything else, but I seem to recall a home run a couple of weeks ago where he actually went with the pitch and hit it out to right center (might have been against the stRangers). Not that it detracts from your point...

Looking at his hit chart at MMP, he has 2 hits all year to the right of dead center: single & the aforementioned dinger.

He's fairly old for a plyer with his experience and has now been handed an everyday job the past two seasons. The next few months are crticial to his career, it seems to me.

I think that you meant is career status is at critical.

Possibly a symptom of that, uh, "unique" swing of his? Seriously, it looks like he's trying to hit himself with the bat.
