We have other issues at hand. Like how bad the Astros stink right now.
I had a bad feeling that 3 rookie starters would catch up with us sometime this season. What's worse is that Oswalt and Pettite can't seem to get it together, either. Plus the bullpen is putrid too.

Which 3 rookie starters, and when did you start having this bad feeling? I only recall 1 rookie starter on opening day - Buchholz, who sports a pretty damn tidy 2.16 ERA. Wandy - who's not a rookie - is 4-1 with a 3.27 ERA. What exactly do you want from these guys? Or are you basing this on a couple of bad outings from Nieve, who's filling in for an injured Backe? It's obviously possible that the lack of experience in the rotation might catch up with "us" at some point, but I don't see how that's the case now.

Wandy and Buchholz are pitching well so far, but this doesn't excuse Purp from not getting a veteran backup option in the offseason.
None of these young pitchers are a proven commodity, and rookies tend to go downhill a few months in once the league starts to figure them out. See "Robertson, Jeriome". One of these guys may turn out to be good, or even great, but not all three/four of them at the same time while trying to win a division.
There's also no guarantee that Backe is going to come back and pitch this season. The GM is going to have to face this eventually, and do his job. Plugging in inexperienced pitchers is only a stopgap. What happens if Pettitte or Oswalt get hurt?!? I'm not really in favor of throwing bags of cash at Team Bastard for a half-season of Clemens' "no run support" whining, either.

This is nuts on so many levels, I don't even know where to begin. And that's really saying something, because I can generally just ramble on endlessly. I sincerely hope there's a flip side to this, and that an insanely effusive post about how great the organization is will follow the next brief winning streak.

The excuse of "looking into outside help" is a lot different than having the cojones to pull the trigger on a major signing or trade to actually help the team. It's not like that can happen right now, but he should have been a lot more active in the winter, and should be more active at the deadline. Preston Wilson was a nice first step, but it was obvious then as it is now that another pitcher or two was needed.
It will be interesting to see if he can make some real MLB GM-type moves once the Bagwell contract is off the books. That is, if Mr. McLane will let him.
BTW: I've been whining about the Astros since 1986, so that's nothing new.
I'll stop when the Astros win a championship, and not that stupid Boot either.

Thanks, that would have been 2 years, $30 plus a 2008 option for another 14 to bring the total to 44 million.

What is it that you wanted the Astros to do this winter? Saying "they should of done something", or "signed another bat" doesn't indicate what the problem was.

No one who seriously follows the Astros could ignore Purpura's description of the problem
"We're trying to add offense, and that's the only place I can add it right now," (LF) Purpura said. "Had Brad (Ausmus) not come back, obviously we would have looked at alternatives via a trade or free agency regarding catcher. You're just a little stuck as to where (to add offense)."
In addition, there were attempts to sign pitching, but BJ Ryan 5 years, $47 million and Scott Eyre, 3 years, $11 million, is just insane.
