"When asked if he was getting the itch to pitch again, Clemens told KRIV: "I'm not, not right now. I'm not too far away physically, but mentally I'm nowhere close."

Rajah = Drama Queen
I am sure he will be "mentally" there when the offers of $12M for half a season start getting bid up...

Seriously, I'm done with this posturing by Rocket.
We have other issues at hand. Like how bad the Astros stink right now.
I had a bad feeling that 3 rookie starters would catch up with us sometime this season. What's worse is that Oswalt and Pettite can't seem to get it together, either. Plus the bullpen is putrid too.
-
Not as old as whining about about a dip in a very long season is going to be.

Which 3 rookie starters, and when did you start having this bad feeling? I only recall 1 rookie starter on opening day - Buchholz, who sports a pretty damn tidy 2.16 ERA. Wandy - who's not a rookie - is 4-1 with a 3.27 ERA. What exactly do you want from these guys? Or are you basing this on a couple of bad outings from Nieve, who's filling in for an injured Backe? It's obviously possible that the lack of experience in the rotation might catch up with "us" at some point, but I don't see how that's the case now.
-
What's the "I and I" equivalent for "us"?

I disagree. Before this losing streak, they had the potential to go 153-9. Given the last five games, though, they're probably going to go 19-143.
Let's just slit our wrists now and get it over with.

That would be the direct object pronouns, "me" and "me."
-
yes, it has...long ago. screw Roger Clemens and the Hummer he rode in on.

OK, I'm climbing off the ledge...

Wandy and Buchholz are pitching well so far, but this doesn't excuse Purp from not getting a veteran backup option in the offseason.
None of these young pitchers are a proven commodity, and rookies tend to go downhill a few months in once the league starts to figure them out. See "Robertson, Jeriome". One of these guys may turn out to be good, or even great, but not all three/four of them at the same time while trying to win a division.
There's also no guarantee that Backe is going to come back and pitch this season. The GM is going to have to face this eventually, and do his job. Plugging in inexperienced pitchers is only a stopgap. What happens if Pettitte or Oswalt get hurt?!? I'm not really in favor of throwing bags of cash at Team Bastard for a half-season of Clemens' "no run support" whining, either.
I'm not totally blaming the youngsters, the pitching staff isn't getting it done as a whole. It's not like the Rockies and Dodgers are the 1927 Yankees.
Still, the bump in the road this season is a whole lot better than last year at this time! (so far.)
A win tonight will make me feel a lot better.

Which veteran pitcher should he have signed?
What makes you think he didn't look into any veterans out there?
Why would anyone predict Backe was going to get injured?
Why didn't Oswalt start sucking once everyone had seen him a few times?
Why are Wandy and Taylor the same as Jeriome?
Why have the Rockies been winning when not facing the Astros youngsters?
What happens to a team when any of their good pitchers get hurt?

This is nuts on so many levels, I don't even know where to begin. And that's really saying something, because I can generally just ramble on endlessly. I sincerely hope there's a flip side to this, and that an insanely effusive post about how great the organization is will follow the next brief winning streak.

Given what the Astros have done in recent history, you'd think the fans would be used to this sort of thing by now.

We should be used to both.

Those are all very good points, but Mr. "Minor League Coordinator" Purpura seems to think that the only guys that can help the team are in the Astros minor league system.
The excuse of "looking into outside help" is a lot different than having the cojones to pull the trigger on a major signing or trade to actually help the team. It's not like that can happen right now, but he should have been a lot more active in the winter, and should be more active at the deadline. Preston Wilson was a nice first step, but it was obvious then as it is now that another pitcher or two was needed.
It will be interesting to see if he can make some real MLB GM-type moves once the Bagwell contract is off the books. That is, if Mr. McLane will let him.
BTW: I've been whining about the Astros since 1986, so that's nothing new.
I'll stop when the Astros win a championship, and not that stupid Boot either.

The Tejada deal didnt happen because he wouldn't waive his right to ask for a trade after the season. Anyone recall what held up the Abreu trade?

Money, as in the Astros wouldn't pick up the remainder of the Abreu contract and the Phillies wouldn't kick in any money to compensate for any of it.

Is that a dance? Or something that Jackie Chan would do? Does it end in a clockwise swirl, maybe counter-clockwise, it's not etched in stone. But the knuckle.....never the end it with the knuckle.

Thanks, that would have been 2 years, $30 plus a 2008 option for another 14 to bring the total to 44 million.
Then there was Garciaparra, the Astros offer was "indistinguishable" from the Astros. Garciaparra didn't want to play left and said he wanted to return to the "french dip sandwich" land of his youth.

What is it that you wanted the Astros to do this winter? Saying "they should of done something", or "signed another bat" doesn't indicate what the problem was.

No one who seriously follows the Astros could ignore Purpura's description of the problem
"We're trying to add offense, and that's the only place I can add it right now," (LF) Purpura said. "Had Brad (Ausmus) not come back, obviously we would have looked at alternatives via a trade or free agency regarding catcher. You're just a little stuck as to where (to add offense)."
In addition, there were attempts to sign pitching, but BJ Ryan 5 years, $47 million and Scott Eyre, 3 years, $11 million, is just insane.

1) Fuck you, I live in Katy.
2) Roger is not from Katy, he actually never lived IN Katy, he lived in Green Trails, which could be considered Katy, but has a mailing address of Houston. He grew up in Spring Branch and currently lives in Memorial.
3) Are Clint Black and Rene Zellwiger (sp?) the other two "famous" people from Katy?

Yeah, whatever. I just expect the Astros to be a winning team, considering the track record the team has had the last 10+ years. Is that a crime?
Also, that horrible Giants sweep just proved my point about the relative inexperience of 3 of our 5 starting pitchers, and I'm not real happy about it. At least Steroid Boy didn't get his stupid homer off the Astros.
There's no use to whine any more about missed opportunities in the offseason, but I have to question whether Purpura has the green light from ownership to add quality veteran players at all (at least those not named Clemens.) Makes me wonder if McLane pulls all the pursestrings. Maybe that's the real reason why Hunsicker left.

Well, he said "Not Clemens", so it's also not just veterans but a certain kind of veteran... perhaps, you know, a "franchise" player!

Just like the Comical writers suddenly opining that the Astros "cannot and will not" win with "three kids" (how old is a "kid"?) in the rotation. They were before, why didn't someone mention this FACT then? Nothing like a 3 game losing streak to bring out the pudnits.
