Title: Monday should be interesting
Post by: pravata on April 28, 2006, 03:26:39 pm
Tracy Ringolsby

_ WHERE WILL CLEMENS GO?: The Astros can re-sign Roger Clemens as of Monday. Don't bet on it.

The Astros have been playing well, ...

Talk in baseball circles is owner Drayton McLane is hoping Clemens drags his feet on a decision and signs with the Red Sox or Yankees.

That way, McLane can save about $3 million a month to try to make it look as if Clemens was a mercenary who went East for money instead of staying home and helping the Astros.
The Link

I dont see any hints that this originates in Houston.

Skip Bayless started this rumor on ESPN's Cold Pizza the other day.  It was his *opinion*, but now it seems to be circulating as a fact.

In-breds.  *sheesh*

Ringolsby never struck me as a guy who goes Justice and just makes up his own baseball sources.  So the question is, which baseball circles has he been listening to.

I heard it even before that. I can't remember where, but it was either ESPN or XM Home Plate last weekend. Whoever it was said that Drayton "does not have the most baseball smarts" and is so enamored with the early success of the young pitchers that he may be more than willing to let Roger pitch elsewhere, rather than pay him what he will command.

I don't buy it, though. I still think the Astros will pay what he wants, and he'll be pitching in MMPUS by sometime in June.

Assuming they all hold to form, which is a big assumption IMO, I think Nieve is out of the rotation. I'm not sure if he'd move to the BP or AAA, though.

Damn, how did HD get a prime time gig?  Everyone know that Drayton is a tightwad lacky neck.

I'd guess BP and Zeke goes back to AAA.

May 23rd has a nice ring to it. The Drama Queen will milk it for all it's worth, might go in to June.

Getting two steps ahead, if the rotation became Roy, Andy, Roger, Wandy and Taylor, what do you think would happen when Backe comes back?

If Rodriguez and Buchholz continue as they are?  Backe could be in relief.

Rogah becomes the closer after Lidge is traded with Adam Everett(to open a spot for Burke) for a LFer to replace Preston Wilson.

Obviously.

I was thinking that, too. It seems kind of odd, since he's been around a bit and had established himself with some clutch games along the way, but them's the brakes. He's not entrenched enough in the rotation to overshadow what Wandy and Taylor are doing right now. Hope they keep it up.

Taylor pitches from the pen but takes Roger's starts on the road.  Or were you thinking that Roger's going to drag his arse around the country with the team for $15mm?  A little na?ve, I feel.

I have no expectation that both Wandy and Taylor will continue to pitch as well as they have.

Well no, not now that you've jinxed it.

Be fair. For $15mm, I only expect him to tell Taylor what pitches to throw on his behalf at home. If you actually want him to take the mound at some point, the club is going to have to do a whole hell of a lot better than this $18mm hometown discount bullshit they pulled last year. The man has mouths to feed.
