Title: If true, this is funny stuff (Milo related)
Post by: Foghorn on April 26, 2006, 11:15:36 am
On a TAMU forum where I go to find out how long until we shit can Franchione, there is a thread about the Astros.  A poster is claiming that during last night's game, while announcing the various groups in attendance, Milo says "And ROn Burgandy and the Action 5 News Team from San Diego is in attendance".   And that a day or so ago he said, "and Lamda Lamda Lamda from Addams College is in attendance..."

Anyone else hear this?  Someone goofing on the unsuspecting Milo?

New booth partner.

OK so for the first time this season, I was able to listen to part of the game on the radio (late nights with no reception kinda sucks), and I was reminded WHY I prefer TV broadcasts. Well, mostly because I love JD & Brownie's teamwork, but honestly, Anyone Not Named Milo is an upgrade. Why? Because I was treated to what was essentially an on-air interview with Yvette for almost an entire half-innin. I couldn't take it anymore, when there was an awkward silence after Milo said he impressed Yvette's aunt at her wedding, and then Yvette said she was (something along the lines of) "stunned in awe just looking at you [Milo]." UGH. Woddofock?

Anyhow, if that's what it feels like just LISTENING to Milo, I can't fathom what it's like being in the booth with him. If his new broadcast partners are feeding him those kinds of lines, more power to them. Don't blame them at all.

A radio interview with Yvette is no good.  We need visuals.  Large, round visuals.

After the profundities. I understand. The idea of Yvette getting mooneyed at Milo, though, just about brought dinner back up.

I heard the Lamda, Lamda, Lamda thing...

Some group had Lamda in their name, Milo sounded confused and whichever sidekick said "Hey, maybe it's Lamda, Lamda, Lamda from Addams College"...

Milo picked it up from there... Now if you ask him today (after someone told him how dumb he sounded) I'm sure he'll swear he was in on it all the time...

But I was sure at the time he didn't have a clue... In fact it brought back flashbacks of Dierker and Woodys...

Even though Milo is completely senile, and if he is speaking you have no clue what is happening on the field, I still prefered the Milo/Ash combo. Listening to these two no names, I feel like I've tuned into a Divison II girls college vollyball game. At least when I tuned in last year I knew I was listening to a Major League Baseball game.

Yes, I heard the Ron Burgandy thing. I honestly expected someone to mention Will Ferral or "Anchorman", but it never came. They were all imprssed that a group came all the way from San Diego to see a game. Hillarious.

About the new guys, I like them. They aren't flashy or particularly memorable, but that's a good thing, IMO. They call the game, and I know what's going on as it happens. Big improvement.

The guys giving weather updates on 740 provide the score in a more timely fashion than Milo does.

I liked it when he told Yvette that she had a face for radio, which was diametric to his intent.

I can't tell the difference between them, but one of them-- Dolan?--has an unrelenting upward lilt in his delivery at the end of every sentence. I'd guess it's about a 3d.

That would be Dave Raymond, a only slightly better version of Alan Ashby.  He sounds like Ashby trying to do an imitation of Vin Scully in his calls, especially the homerun. I'm talking about Ashby of course.  "Fly ball... to the wall... and that ball is GONE!"  Raymond has a more annoying call on a homerun: "Deep fly ball, to the wall, left fielder leaps... (all this is in the same tone, kind of telling me it's going to be an out for sure)... and it's... over the wall!  HOMERUN FOR BERKMAN!".  He waits until he's really sure, as in the ball is completely gone to make the call with any emphasis.  Splitting hairs for sure, but he hasn't been appreciably any better than listening to Ashby lately.

I expected more.

As for Dolan, he is buried as the #3 man for some reason, but he has a real nice call of the game when he does get his chance.  As for Milo... he's getting worse by the inning now, instead of by the day.

Followed by a giggle and Yvette asking "what does that mean?"

I'm reserving judgment on the new guys until I get to hear them call a bunch of games together. Due to the San Fran rainout, the one road trip so far was shortened. When I listen to the home games, Milo is so overbearing that the new guys can't get a word in edgewise. I enjoyed it when they worked together sans Milo in Spring Training, and have a feeling that after we let them develop their rhythm together without having to dance around Milo's phlegm, in addition to getting to know their individual styles, we'll all warm up significantly to them.

I'm discovering all those years of not having cable I missed a lot of things listening to the radio, but I always trusted Ashby's analysis of things, and I always loved Milo's voice. I'm happy with these guys having a shot, but they seem to have Ashby's voice without his trustworthyness. The only thing that bugs me about Milo, honestly, is not giving the score, often.  Really really often.

So what's the over/under on that? I can't see them not canning him if the Ags don't win 2 of 3 from Tech, Texas and OU. And 0/3 is more likely than 2/3.

Word locally is Bryne's going down with Franchione.

Byrne is going nowhere.  The Athletic Department is doing well.  Now if Football and Baseball could get on board...

But everything I've heard says Fran must win 10 this fall or he's out.  So, basically he's out.

This reminds me of a story a friend of mine told me about Milo, (don't you just love friend of a friend stories?  they are always so accurate).

Apparenlty he knew a girl that was interning with the Astros and Milo was around one day and said something along the lines of "BFOG coming through" or somesuch.  She kinda laughed not knowing what he meant, and stopped and asked him what he was talking about.

He smiled and said it stood for "Blouse Full of Goodies".

At which point she just shook her head and walked off.

I never minded Ashby. Besides, I always felt it was difficult to tell if he would have been better without Milo. The innings he did without Milo were usually pretty good, IMO.

I agree we'll need to hear the new guys on the road by themselves before we can get a good read on them. I think part of the problem is that they are similar in age and background and both brand new to us. That makes them hard to distinguish from each other. As we get to know them, we'll be able to distinguish them and maybe appreciate them. I know I already appreciate hearing a play called accurately and in a timely manner.

Unfortunately, however, I won't be hearing them on the road trips because XM usually provides the feed from the home team, meaning that I'll get the opposition's PBP guys on road trips instread of Brett and Dave. I'll be interested to hear perspectives on how they do together, though.

If Milo sucked anymore these days every batted ball in games played at MM would wind up in his press box.

Just god awful.

At this point, he cares about doing his JOB about as much as Iverson cares about practice.

Listening to Milo and the new guy could not be less comfortable.   Terrible.

Please quit you old senil egomaniac.

Actually it's Dolan with the upward lilt at the end of each sentence. It's been driving me crazy and I listened real close today to make sure I got his name right.

I think he and Raymond are alternating home stands or something. Raymond's voice is more mellifluous but Dolan seems, early on, to be a little more informed while calling the game. Either way, the way he talks makes me want to shoot him to death with a big black gun.

Yep - except it was announced as "Ron Burgandy and Associates, all the way from San Diego" -- followed by a short pause, as if to appreciate that someone came all that way -- and then on to the next group, with no sense of recognition. I sort of sensed that the color guy (can't remember which new guy it was) caught it, but was waiting for Milo to comment, but then Milo moved on and nothing was said.

What's even funnier is later on in the half inning the color guy says something along the lines of "how bout that a group all the way from San Diego" and Milo says yeah.  Don't know if the color guy got the joke or not, but I know Milo didn't.

That's one I think Ashby did pretty well that neither Dolan or Raymond have picked up on yet.  Ashby would repeatedly force his way into Milo's play calling and accurately describe what was going on.  When Milo would give us something like "....ground ball to right.....can Bidge get there?.....oh boy whadda play!" Ashby would immediately come in with "it sure was, Milo - that was a sharp, sinking line drive to Biggio's left..." and proceed to tell us what we really wanted to hear.

Dolan and Raymond, at least based on what I've heard from them so far, seem to be content letting Milo call each play completely and only interjecting from time to time.  I imagine as they get more comfortable that will change, though.

Man, that was dead spot on!  I find myself waiting for the same from Raymond (I have not heard Dolan paired with Milo yet).  In game one versus the Dojers, Milo called a fly ball to left like this:

(Milo) "Long fly ball, it's looonggg... errr... the left fielder is looking up and it's....ahhhhh"

*silence*

(Me: "WHAT!!! DAMNIT... WHAT!!! SAY SOMETHING, PLEASE... SOMEONE!")

Raymond: "The left fielder caught it, Milo..."

Milo: "Folks, we lose sight of the ball and the left fielder when it goes into the corner like that...."

(ME: "so why were you going into a homerun call?")

Raymond: "Just short of the track, Milo... Cruz got over there quickly and made the play."

Milo: "err... ahhh... oh"

I think you're correct and eventually Raymond and Dolan will learn to jump in and provide the information on the play a lot quicker instead of letting the Captain stumble his way through things.  Ash did a great job of timing his "lemme jump in here".  Raymond didn't know how painful that really was to listen to for me and probably thousand of other fans.

I heard that same play (or one similar), and I could almost hear Raymond looking over at Milo thinking, "Are you going to finish the calling play??"

I really think these new guys will be pretty good. Right now, they're tripping over Milo and still learning the team, but they call the game well when given the chance. Last night I noticed Raymond jumoed in on a couple of plays with near Ashby-like timing. Like has been stated, it will be interesting to hear them without Milo in the booth for 12 of the next 14 games.

...Milo is so overbearing that the new guys can't get a word in edgewise.

Here's the one that had me screaming at the radio the other day. Late in a game with the Brewers, I think the score was tied or close ...

(Milo excited and getting louder) "AndtheresashotuptheleftfieldlinebyBiggio!!! Thatonesgoingtobetrouble!!!"

... (silence)

... (silence)

... (silence)

"Boy."

"That Carlos Lee is really deceptive out there, isn't he?"

Does he actually call plays, though? I figured someone was just pulling the string in his back... I mean, come on. Is EVERY SINGLE 6-4-3 a "flip it, fire it" type? Makes it sound as though Everett doesn't do anything but make underhanded tosses to Biggio, who then lasers the ball (hahaha) to first.

As frustrating as it is during the game for you, me and countless others, reading the text of everyone's examples here have me laughing just imagining Milo's "calls".  Craig's, in particular, is a great one.
