Title: Neat Idea
Post by: hed on April 12, 2006, 02:46:54 pm
I was talking to a few of my friends today on the baseball team, and we thought it would be a pretty cool idea if the Astros played one game in the Astrodome mid-season.  I miss  attending games in the Astrodome. My friends and I love that stadium.

What do you fans think of that idea? I know it would never happen, but it would be fun!

I was in the 'Dome a couple of weekends ago.  It was the finishing point for the Run for the Rose.  It's all still intact including the seats, scoreboard and signage.  It still has the "Home of the Houston Oilers" banner, which surprised me as I thought I was only doing 5K.

Anyway, don't know about the bathrooms, catering facilities etc., but it looked from the field that you could just put down some grass and have at it.

I've been to a couple of softball games there, which was pretty fun, but the turf is not in good shape.

I'd love to see the Astros wear these uniforms on a regular basis. I love'em!  Do they wear these on occasion anymore?

Leave the old barn alone.  That long fly to left center that Caminiti hit off Rocker is still hanging in the air.

The Dome was a shithole when they played there before, and it's gotten worse.  No way in hell.

I agree, with the lack of a lease to a professional team, and no major events scheduled recently, the revenue stream for the needed maintenance just isn't going to come from softball games, but hey, maybe they can play an exhibition game against the rats.

Didn't the chronicle do a story last year on the possibility of the Astros playing in the dome if MMPUS was damaged by the hurricane?  I vaguely remember the argument being that it would cost too much to bring the dome back up to specs to play mlb there.

It seems this happens every year.  Season starts up, people who had forgotten about baseball get excited, they go look for new places, some of 'em find this one, and then the fun starts.

I took the newbie advice perhaps a little too seriously: I lurked (first AC, then here) for about four years before posting.  But it did save me some exasperating go-rounds with HD and George.

I would rather they move back to the Dome altogether and put the old scoreboard back up, which AFAIK is still in storage in Houston.  Never been a big fan of the Juice Box.

That is Nick Nolte as Phil Elliott in "North Dallas 40", the greatest movie ever made IMO.

The scoreboard isn't in storage, exactly.  I recently heard an ex-county official say that he asked the contractor who took out the scoreboard for some bulbs from the old scoreboard, and that the contractor delivered him something like 12 bushel baskets full.  He said they're still in his attic.

Is that in storage?

I thought his claim that we didn't have any was ludicrous.  How in the hell you could discount Clemens that way I don't know.  And Drayton did go after Beltran as far as he could - he did the right thing letting him go but it's not like we were never even interested.

A better case could be made that we don't make very many mid-season moves.

And even that case would be weak, since the Astros made two of the most heralded midseason moves of the past 10 years. How many midseason moves in the last decade have stacked up to Johnson and Beltran?

Randy Johnson resents this entire conversation.

I was thinking more alone the lines of 2 fairly significant moves in the last 5 years, but yes, Randy probably tops the list.

I am no fan of McMullet, but he did bring Nolan Ryan to the stros and if I am not mistaking offered him the first million dollar contract in baseball.  Who built the Dome?  I think it was a certain judge you mentioned.

You are correct on both counts, but don't forget he later asked Ryan to take a pay cut when all he was seeking was the same $1MM he had been paid every year since joining the team.  Even without that gaff that sent Ryan to the Rangers, it pales in comparison to what McLane has brought to town.

Yeah, but I realize that was necessary to get the money to get the team to the WS, which outweighs my love for The Harris County Domed Stadium.  I don't hold that against Drayton, just like I don't put Judge Hoffeinz above all others for inventing the damn thing.

Loosely based on the old Roman Colosseum, the Astrodome was like no venue that had come before it, and it was dubbed the "Eighth Wonder of the World".

Interesting about the Roman Colosseum. Is that true?
