But, apparantly, you guys already know that.
This comment made me shake my head. "General manager Tim Purpura offered Brad Lidge, Willy Taveras and Adam Everett for Baltimore shortstop Miguel Tejada, according to the Washington Post."
The Link
God forbid... Could you imagine what a colossal blunder that would have been? Not that I trust any such thing was said in anything other than a speculation column.

I'm pretty sure at least 2 of those names are correct.

Tejada and Washington?

I saw several different reports that it was a dispute between Lane and Taveras - a dispute that was not insignificant.
Given the Wilson signing, I would do the WT/BL/AE deal. Then again, it's not my money.
-
Keep in mind - the O's will be out of it early on, and the trade talks may resurface during the season.

According to rumor that is not too far off the truth, but as I recall the offer was made TO the Astros, not from. But then my memory is hazy (it happened more the 2 hours ago).
-
das, Lidge and AE were offered for sure. it may have expanded to include Lane OR Taveras. the Astros made the offer.
-
Lidge/taveras/AE for Tejada? Sign me up!!!!
I'd do that deal. 1 of the 3 is expendable. One is young with potential, and the other is what you have to give up to get a guy like tejada.
-
Lidge and Everett, and I've heard this from more than a few sources.
-
When I read the subject line, I thought for sure you were talking about this guy The Link

Jim and Foghorn, I hear it but can't understand how mortgaging the future for someone like Tejada (at that $$ and personnel cost) is worth it. Maybe my perception of his merits are just so skewed by his abrasive personality...

I'm not sure that's mortgaging the future. Lidge and Lane are about the same age as Tejada, assuming Tejada's birthday is believeable. Lidge is now arbitration-eligible, is supposedly an injury risk and might be replaceable by other pitchers in the system. Lane is a late bloomer, whom I hope works out, but he might also end up like Richard Hidalgo. He is also at a position where he is not terribly difficult to replace. And Taveras is still partially an unknown. He wasn't even really on the depth chart until breaking out last season. He may be the real deal, he may not be.
Tejada is a known quantity as the real deal -- the last seven seasons he's missed just five games and averaged 29 home runs and 114 RBI -- and he's a shortstop, which replaces Everett straight up.
-
How is trading lidge and everett mortgaging the future? They think lidge will be earning too much soon and is replacable, and everett is clearly redundant with Miggy.
Even if you throw in Taveras, I think it's hard to say you are mortgaging the future.

The Justice article mentioned Tejada's salary as $17m, but everything I've seen lists an average of $12m for the next four years (plus $6m total in unpaid signing bonus, which may or may not be covered by the O's in the event of a trade). breakdown also The Link At that salary I think he is well worth it.

Ok, ok, so his production says he's worth it. I'll just leave it at "I don't like his pissy attitude". Gets a lot of play around here and is very tiresome.

I know nothing about his off-the-field demeanor but I would imagine some of his pissiness lately comes from having Raffy Palmeiro throw him under the bus on the steroid stuff.
I'd go to war with a lineup of:
Biggio 2B
Bagwell/Lamb 1B
Berkman LF
Tejada SS
Ensberg 3B
Wilson CF
Lane RF
Ausmus C
With either Wheeler or Qualls becoming the new closer.

While his bat is totally not ready, it would definately speed up the time table on Josh Anderson, just to get a defensive CFer, for late inning replacement.
And I am not sure Wilson can handle CF for a whole season without issues on his knees.
That is what concerns me, if Bagwell is healthy (which I would like, but don't expect, to have happen).
As for the deal, I heard the real sticking point and why the deal died initially was that Houston balked at the fear Tejada would force an extention or demand to be traded after this season, per rules on trading a playing in the middle of a multi-year deal.
