Fidel Castro suggested the United States doesn't want to play Cuba in the World Baseball Classic, ...
"We aren't afraid of anything,'' Castro said in a wide-ranging speech late Tuesday. "It's very difficult to compete against us in any area ... not even in baseball do they want to compete with Cuba.''

Fidel, aka the Great Hamboney, might have even said "You play ball like a giiirrrrrrrrl!" and called the US a "pee-drinking crap-face!"

Isn't this guy dead yet? I hope the Treasury department relents and lets the Cubanos in--if we get all the top Cuban talent outside of their proletarian paradise, they can defect en masse.

I really don't care, but if Cuba hadn't been allowed to participate it would have made it very hard for this "Classic" to get off to a good start with skeptical Americans. I understand the whole shebang is primarily aimed at international markets, though.

Of course you don't care, nobody cares, nobody is interested in seeing Vladimir Guerrero and Albert Pujols on the same team. How boring is that going to be. If Cuba had been banned, several other S.American teams wouldn't have played. The whole thing would have collapsed. The reason an Astros fan should be interested is because Roger Clemens wants to play in these games. And to do that he has to be in shape in March. If he's in shape in March, he can hit the ground running in May.

That's a good point about Clemens. But if I had the choice between watching someone hoist the WBC trophy or a Astros ST game, I'd rather watch the ST game.

I, for one, care. I'm not exactly what you'd call "patriotic", but for some reason, I always get into international competition. I'm not a Soccer fan, but I enjoy the World Cup. I enjoy certain Olympic events. I'm sure that I'd follow the WBC and be interested even if I wasn't a baseball fan. The fact that it is baseball makes it even more appealing to me.
I really don't care about the names, although I do want to best atheletes available. I'll watch because I love baseball, and I enjoy international competition. So, yeah, I care.

Great news. This was the right move. Now if only we'd end the symbolic and pointless embargo against Cuba and start importing some fine cigars. And turn Havana back into a Spanish-speaking Las Vegas. And prop up WWE wrestler Batista as their el presidente.

This is a great take. I would disagree that the embargo is pointless, but I'm all about getting ahold of those cigars at a reasonable price. Since I am not an afficianado of the WWE, I wasn't sure who this Batista character was, but upon seeing this picture I have to say that he couldn't be any worse than Fidel.
What would make the World Baseball tourney truly classic would be the mass defection of the entire Cuban team. So Mr. Presidente, your entire team has sought political asylum(and MLB contracts), are you still going to donate proceeds to the Katrina relief effort?
