Title: 25-man roster now set
Post by: Froback on January 09, 2006, 12:57:44 pm
OK, it is not official, but we can look at the contracts signed and such and pull together the 25-man roster very easily now.  Or at least do what the Astros must be doing.

Starters:
Roy Oswalt
Andy Pettitte
Brandon Backe
Wandy Rodriguez
Ezequiel Astacio (obviously there might be some competition in ST here)

Bullpen:
Brad Lidge
Dan Wheeler
Chad Qualls
Russ Springer
Mike Gallo
Trever Miller

That is 11 Pitchers.  My Concern with the bullpen is that only Springer is really a 3+ Inning type guy, which is somewhat nit-picky.

Now the Positon Players:

C: Brad Ausmus
1B: Jeff Bagwell (have to assume he will come back until you hear otherwise)
2B: Craig Biggio (quest for 3000 and icon status solidify this)
3B: Morgan Ensberg
SS: Adam Everett
LF: Lance Berkman
CF: Willy Taveras
RF: Preston Wilson

Bench:
C: Raul Chavez (Might be Quintero)
1B/3B: Mike Lamb
2B/LF: Chris Burke
UTIL: Eric Bruntlett
OF: Jason Lane
OF: Orlando Palmeiro

I would have to assume Luke Scott or a 12th pitcher make the team only if Bagwell cannot go, or a trade is made involving one or more of the 25 I just mentioned.

Why carry Gallo and Miller?

Miller can be expected to be the long man in the pen.  Assuming, of course, that he can actually survive more than an inning without getting his brains beaten in.

PS  It's the second week of January, and I'm already bitching about the 25th man on the roster.  Is this a record?

Some teams have tried the novel concept of carrying more than one lefthanded reliever.

Now, if you want to ask, "Why carry Gallo or Miller?", I couldn't give a good answer.

We are all good at SOMETHING... we all know what your favorite thing is.

For me, at least they kept my favorite scape-goat from last year (Lamb).  So as long as they keep giving him starts, I will have something easy to complain about this year.  Although I fear I might also begin to start harping on certain players I NEVER thought I would complain about before.

My guess is that IF Roger comes back in mid-season, Gallo will likely be banished to AAA, or maybe Zeke/Wandy if options are an issue and they don't want to lose anyone incase injuries create a need.

Hopefully it will be set with Clemens.

Any outfield good enough to warrant Lane on the bench must have a pretty good team.  I am happy with that.

Umm, that's not possible anymore.

Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I'm guessing it would revert to Berkman-Wilson-Lane by mid-May.

That or Wilson, Taveras, Lane. I hope not, though.

Well...it takes a pretty big optimist to think that Bagwell is coming back.

I was actually thinking of a major drop-off by Willy.

I have to agree with this at the risk of getting flamed.  OTOH never in a million years did I expect Baggs to be pinch hitting by the playoffs after surgery.

I would not be surprised to see Bagwell limited to pinch hitting duties.  Although he would be a high priced bench option, he would be damn effective in the role assuming he can have range of motion to hit the ball with some power.

Refresh my memory.  Has Bagwell clearly stated that he would retire if he could not play his position?

No.  But I have heard people who know him and have talked with him, and they all seems to feel that way, as long as the Astros Organization doesn't treat him poorly between now and then as he genuinely tries to make a go of it.

I think I read somewhere that the Astros have insurance on his contract if he can't play.  If that's true (depending on the language, of course), he wouldn't really retire, just go on DL and get paid.  At least I would think so, with $17 million at stake.

I don't see Bags coming back as a bench player for the season.  Either he plays 1B or he goes on the DL.  If the DL option is what happens, it will be interesting to see how "easily" the insurance is handed over.  I would imagine that his appearance in Sept/Oct. of last year will be a big point of contention by the insurance company regarding his ability to play and their need to payout.  It could be a long time before thr grocer ever see's that cashflow.

The Astros cannot sign Clemens until 5/1.

Yes I am well aware of that. However there has been plenty of speculation that we could start out with the kids and bring Roger back in June. Early theories had him playin the World Cup, then joining the Astros early-mid season.
