when they were breaking the AJ Burnett signings, 5 years 55 million to toronto they (buck martinez) said that in the end he went for the money, turning down identical 4 year- 40 million dollar offers from the turdnals and the ASTROS.
I didn't know we were in on this guy at all, was buck wrong or might we be trying to make a splash after all and the payroll is not as locked into 85 million as we thought?

I hope they made the offer and I'm glad he didn't take it.

Agreed on both counts OB. If they made the offer it means that they aren't seeing themselves as handcuffed, which is nice. I don't want that freaking pussy Burnett making 10 million as an astro- the guy is bush league and proved it in September with the Marlins.

I think that Martinez probably misspoke. Burnett is not worth $40 million over 4 years, and I can't imagine the Astros making that kind of offer to him when they've made it known that offense is the main priority. If they have that kind of money to offer a mid-rotation starter, then they would certainly be in on some of the bigger bats available.

I guess the thinking is that if you have him maybe you can turn Backe/Qualls/Wheeler or some such others into a bat. Or maybe buck mispoke. I certainly hadn't heard anything about Burnett and the Stros, though the stros like to do things outside of the media spotlight (rightly so I would say), see trades for Beltran, Carlos and Johnson, Randy.
