Yea, why didn't he offer 4 years and 60 Mil for Wagner!
And why isn't he trading Chavez for Dunn, and Gallo for Manny!

I actually, I was only being slightly sarcastic.
Purpura has done NOTHING to HURT the team, yet he also has
done NOTHING to improve the team.
I don't consider that being a GOOD GM.
The question is, did he really BELIEVE in this team? Or was he just unable to make a deal to improve the team?

Actually the response was more to otter than you, but I agree Tim hasn't done anything major yet, but given the options the team really has had... I don't blame him.
People have been calling for move X or move Y, but the reality is to get X or Y the other team has to agree to it too, and their asking prices (from all reports I have heard) were insanely high. So given the Astros current situation with contracts and positions filled, there is very little the team can do.
That is why I keep pointing to next off-season being the big deal. The reality is until the Bagwell situation is made clear (can he play, or can't he) and the Clemens situation is resolve, not much can be done.
I thought there was a chance for alot of trades for Houston this offseason, but mostly in a minor league player acquistion situation, preparing for 07/08 team, rather than big moves for 06.
But to say Pupura hasn't done anything as if that is a bad thing, is misrepresentative of reality. Had someone offered him Dunn for Wandy and Zeke and he said no, then maybe we can debate that choice, but since that hasn't happend... What is the real complaint? What move has he not done, that he could/should have? Until that comes to light, lay off!

Actually, that was just a joke.
Purpura's ability remains to be seen, imo. Personally, I'd like to see some offense added, but if the Astros remains roughly the same then they'd remain a World Series caliber team.

Hey. I'm always a big proponent of making trades, but where do you want to add offense?
Unless Bagwell can't play or Ausmus signs elsewhere, the Astros aren't replacing any of the starting 8.
And unless Clemens retires, the Astros probably aren't going to add another starter.
There aren't a whole lot of places the Astros can add players. This is essentially the team.
The Astros are counting on continued improvement from Lane, Ensberg, and Wily T., some production from Bagwell, and minimal decline from Biggio and Ausmus.

Why are the starting 8 and/or minor leaguers set in stone? I'd argue that there's a window that could be closing soon for the Astros. After making the World Series, they could win it all next year. Consolidating for more offense would make sense and I don't see why it's unreasonable. So, why is it unreasonable?

It's not unreasonable, it's an issue of finances and transition from the biggio/bagwell era to Berkman, Ensberg, etc. But for your sake i'll go position by position and explain the logic:
Catcher: Who would really be an upgrade on Ausmus as a total package? What you get in offense from Molina/Hernandez you lose defensively from Brad. Plus, Roger wants Brad back. If that is a package deal, you really can't afford to ignore it.
First base: The team isn't just going to push lifetime Astro Jeff Bagwell out without him coming to them and saying he can't help the team anymore. Therefore, the only thing you really can do right now is sign someone willing to come off the bench/platoon with mike lamb as an insurance policy in case he can't go.
Second Base: See bagwell above, plus Biggio can still hit.
Shortstop: Adam Everett is a gold glove caliber defender. The upgrades offensively are way too expensive(see furcal), and you never want to sacrifice defense at shortstop. As far as Nomar goes, I think any team that signs him as a SS has lost their minds at this point, unless it is all incentive based.
Third Base: Morgan Ensberg was outstanding last year.
Left Field: Lance Berkman, nothing else needs to be said.
Center Field: Willy Taveras is talented, young, and blazing fast with a cannon for an arm. No need to upgrade here.
Right Field: Jason Lane had a very successful season. He could be upgraded on however as he ran very streaky, but the free agent market is ridiculously inflated right now, so it's highly unlikely.
The bottom line is the Astros would need to know right now whether Jeff feels he can play everyday because otherwise how can they guarantee a marquee free agent playing time. Plus, the chemistry on this team was outstanding, so that plays into it as well. Also, the team has a lot of payroll tied up into a few players and that plays into things as well.

Seems to me Purpura needs to go for a cheap 4th outfielder/possible starter to hedge his bets about Bagwell being able to play. Someone like Kevin Mench of the Rangers or Craig Monroe of the Tigers. Or Reggie Sanders, though I don't know how cheap he'd be.

OP is a free agent, too, but he's a 5th OF.

Purpura will be great. I do wonder what we'd have had to give up for Dunn though. Is there any clarity as to what the demand was that was too step? I believe it was steep, or else some team would have traded for him. But I was never clear on what, specifically, the Reds demanded.

As I recall the rumor last year it was like Burke and our top 3 pitching prospects. Or was it Zeke, Wandy, Nieve and Patton... something stupid like that.
