Screw that... Pissant v2.0 got more votes than Clemens.
Voting a top 10 ballot is silly.

The Astros' cadre probably took votes from each other.
Much as I hate him, Pooholes got only 1st or 2nd place votes. Pretty strong showing. Still needs to fill his boots because he's at his peak now and (his true) age will start to catch up to him soon.

So, Tank Commander had the MVP and the Cy winners, yet it was his managing that won the Division and 2nd in the MOY? Also, from the looks of the full voting list, it's a miracle the Astros got by the Marlins and Phillies.

It's no question that the Astros got as far as they did primarily on pitching, which usually nets very few MVP votes. The only serious MVP candidate we had still got 4th place, which is about where I'd put him. I can't argue too much with the way the voting turned out.

nor can i. we did not have a NL MVP, imo. it was a team.

I agree that the convention is that the MVP is for position players, however 9 of the 32 who received votes were pitchers. In addition, Pat Burrell, Chase Utley, and Jason Bay received more votes than Lance Berkman. I'm not concerned about it, I'm simply highlighting the farcical nature of the entire exercise.
-
I think what's farcical are the votes for 5-10. I understand why they do it that way, but at that point it's almost pulling names out of a hat in most years.
-
are you suggesting that the voters might have favorites and not always pay attention to the stats? (not counting the actual mvp)Do you have an idea for a better way to choose one?

Perhaps the most enjoyable thing about this past season, IMO.

No. I think the whole exercise is ridiculous.

I'd rather have the NL Champion award than NL MVP. But that's just me.

No. I think the whole exercise is ridiculous.
Mostly. I'm no Pujols lover, but the mere fact that Ajones got 13 or so 1st-place votes, is just silly.

Having only been an Astros fan since around 1989, and also having a poor memory, I was curious what the Astros' best MVP finishes have been. I had completely forgotten Alou from '98, and was a little surprised to see Thon and Bass on the list.
Best Astros MVP finishes:
1st - Bagwell 1994
2nd - GDavis 1986, Bagwell 1999
3rd - JCruz 1980, Bagwell 1997, Alou 1998, Berkman 2002
4th - Biggio 1997, Ensberg 2005
5th - Biggio 1998, Berkman 2001
6th - CCedeno 1972, JNiekro 1979, JCruz 1983
7th - DThon 1983, KBass 1986, GDavis 1989, Bagwell 2000, Bagwell 2001,
Berkman 2004
8th - JCruz 1984, GDavis 1988, Clemens 2004
9th - LMay 1972, Bagwell 1996
10th - MScott 1986, Biggio 1995

Two things struck me with your list:
1. Cedeno-reminds of what could have been.
2. How the heck did Biggio never finish higher than 4th? He was seriously good in his prime years.

My guess is that those 13 were people who emphasize the "V" in MVP. Their argument is that the Cardinals make the playoffs and probably the NLCS without Pujols, but the Braves probably finish 3rd in the NLeast without Jones. It's not all stats-based.

Because in 94 and 97, he lost too many votes to Bagwell, and in 98, some freaks put on their fireworks.

And Alou was the Astros MVP in 98. That likely took some votes away from Biggio.
