Are there any concerns about using Bagwell as DH? I'm not talking so much his hitting ability, but it seems like when he was pinch hitting, they would take him out for a pinch runner if he got on base. Was that just precautionary, and if so, does that lessen his chance at being the DH?

Maybe against Buerhle. Frankly I think Lamb will be the DH against the righties.

Fuck that. Jeff Bagwell should start every game in Chicago. Lamb at first, Berkman in left.
I guess it comes down to Burke or Bagwell. Give me the old man.

Exactly. He's earned it, and to get there and not be allowed to play would be a travesty. PLus, he's a better hitter than Lamb overall although it may be marginal right now.

He was taken out for pinch runners not because he can't run bases, but because when he's gotten on, it's usually a run the the team needed and with a bunch of fast bench guys (Burke, Taveras, Jimerson, Gipson) it works out.
Bagwell, if he gets to DH, will be fine.
-
They should use the same lineups they have been: Lamb at 1st against righthanders with Berkman in left; Berkman at 1st against lefthanders with Burke in left. And Bagwell at DH.
-
Exactly...Bagwell has to be our DH.
Where do you think he will hit in the order? 5?
-
I was wondering the same thing. Maybe 9th? I know that sounds crazy, but on the other hand can you really drop someone who hasn't been playing regularly all year into the middle of the lineup? Also, if we continue to get production from the bottom of the lineup as we did last night, he will have plenty of RBI opportunities. So crazy it just might work? Just a thought....
-
I kinda like that thought too...plus he walks a lot, so Biggio and Berkman would have some opportunities to drive him in.
It makes sense...but I bet he doesn't hit 9th.

I think you've gotta bat him 9th. He just doesn't appear to have the power, but he is getting on base when given the opportunity to hit. Makes him almost like a "leadoff before the leadoff" batter. And don't forget, he's one of the smartest baserunners we have, even if he doesn't have the speed any more.
Of course I really don't know shit, so this is probably completely and utterly wrong.

Bagwell should DH only if he can help the team win. if he cannot, he should not play. sanve the sentiment for an Old Timers game.

I agree with you 100%.
-
absolutely, and I think he can, and will

I don't think he'd hurt the team, and I don't think he's limited to being a singles machine as some of the people here seem to think.
But I trust Garner to do the right thing in regards to this.

I think he still has power, plenty of it. I watched his recent rare AB's closely, and he still has that swing. His hits were of the top-spin varity. Plus he can still work a walk and run the bases.
This is going to be good.
-
I've seen batting practice a handful of times since the end of September. He can still hit there.
-
I think he only gets DH starts against Buehrle, but that's just me and I don't count.
-
Isn't what TJ's suggesting, hitting the DH in the 9 spot, what a lot of AL teams do? I try not to WATCH that brand of baseball unless it's absolutely necessary, so I'm guessing as much as asking.
Does Garner have an edge that the so-called experts at ESPNFOXSPORTINGNEWSSI are overlooking, which is that he's managed in both leagues and won't have to think as much in Chicago about, "What do I do here?", as Ozzie will when the the games reach Houston? Is that difference overblown?
Can the teams expand the roster for the World Series, or are we going to have to watch Phil choose between Scott and Astacio again?
Were you more relieved than exhuberant when it ended last night?

Garner's got a bit of experience filling out a lineup card with a DH slot. He's managed in the AL before. I doubt he'll be confused, or confined to stereotypes.
-
I am betting that Bags will hit 7th behind Lane or Burke and in front Ausmus and Everett.
