Neither Pettitte nor Carpenter were particularly sharp tonight, but they did battle.
In the first the Astros had runners 2nd and 3rd with two outs. Lamb bounced a ball down the 3b line that Luna grabbed but took him 3 steps over the foul line to set and make the throw. Lamb got beat at first and the run did not score.
By the 2nd, the Astros had runners 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Everett struck out on a hard slider and Pettitte, in a possible case of ?I know that you know that I know that you know that a squeeze could possible happen,? ?But just wait till I get going!? The big problem was that Pettitte is lefthanded and Molina could see everything before it happened. Pettitte, not bunting, grounded to first and Lane broke from 3rd. Pujols threw the ball up the 1st base line. Molina took the throw and pivoted backwards, catching Lane sliding in.
Biggio then, with a 2 out clutch hit, singled to left scoring the first run.
In the 3rd, Eckstein singled and stole 2nd. They seemed to have figured out Pettitte and had no problem going on first move. Edmonds singles, and with 2 on Pujols comes up. He hits a long fly ball high down the 3b line which goes foul. But then strikes out on a 92 mph fastball on the outside corner.
Sanders Ks but Walker loads the bases on a walk. Grudzielanek expands his zone and takes a ball outside to right scoring two. Molina strikes out and the game is 2-1 Cardinals.
In the 4th, 2 outs runners 2nd and 3rd, Biggio lined hard to left.
In the 7th a couple errors chased Pettitte. But not before he got Eckstein on first move. Turns out, they're not so smart. Qualls came in and got Pujols and Sanders to ground out.
Now comes the 8th. Biggio reached on an error. Burke, on a hit and run single, gets Biggio to 3rd. Berkman slashed at an outside pitch and lined it into the Crawford Boxes. They then exhibited the proper use of a curtain call, albeit premature.
Gallo and Wheeler nail down the 8th. Isringhausen relieves Carpenter and keeps the score at 4-2.
Lidge, coming in for the 4th game in a row, has the 9th. He strikes out Rodriguez, strikes out Mabry and has Eckstein 1-2. Eckstein singles past a diving Ensberg. Edmonds walks and Pujols hits a belt high hanging slider down the middle of the plate over the faux train tracks.
Taveras, Vizcaino (hitting for Bruntlett) and Burke fail to get the tying run in the 9th off Isringhausen.
No game tomorrow, Wednesday in St Louis, 7:28, Oswalt vs. Morris. Sit quietly and inly ruminate.
