so says today's San Francisco Chronicle. a better comparison, i think, than fox's attempts at turning him into the next reggie jackson or carlos beltran.
-
Maybe now they can get him a helmet that fits.
-
I keep waiting for Leyritz comparisons. or is it too early?
-
i think he is Beltran. i expect him to hire Boras and to be a hot commodity in the off season. i hope so anyway.
i am happy for him, and it is fun to watch his emergence.

I'd like to know what's gotten into him. He wasn't this aggressive with the bat during the regular season. And, certainly, he didn't hit the ball with this kind of authority. Nor, was he as selective as he's been. I wonder if something someone (Gaetti?) taught him finally sunk in.
It'll be interesting to see if his career turns more toward Buddy Biancalana or Mark Loretta.
-
they are coming in on him, which helps.when he drives a low and away slider to RCF, i'll say "Welcome Home, Son!"

I would venture more towards a confidence factor than anything in his swing mechanics. That and he's probably seeing beachballs up at the plate right about now.

wasn't his double/triple last night to right center . . . Do you remember the pitch type/location?
-

Right. But, do you recall him driving pitches the way he has. Seems to me he blooped those to right in the past. Or, get himself jammed.

No doubt, he'll get a steady diet of those from here on out.

90 mph fastball. up and out over the plate.
The single off Tavarez was on a slider that hung low and over the middle of the plate.

Right center on a hanging fastball...I think.

It was a high fastball. He was a little late, but managed to get on top enough to hit it right between Edmonds and Walker. Edmonds lollygagged it into a triple, though it was good balls-out running by Burke.
-
well, its nice to see him go the other way with it nonetheless.
I agree with you Jim, but Biggio has never conquered the down and away slider and he has had a pretty decent career at the plate, wouldn't you say?
-
please do not say Biggio and Burke in the same sentence.

obviously, and I am not even on the Burke bandwagon just yet. I just meant to suggest that a hitter can still have a successful approach at the plate without being able to handle all types and locations of pitches to all fields.
-
Everyone knows that I love Bidge blah blah blah, but that slider low and away is frustrating.
I guess its just his Kryptonite then, but I feel like if he didn't have that hole in his approach instead of being one of the 50 greatest position players of all time we might be talking Joe Morgan top 20 type instead.
Or, put another way, if he would have played in the era before the slider what might his numbers look like. Which is why it cracks me up when so many seem to think that the best baseball players ever have been dead for decades.

ditto..i love bidge etc etc etc
but he wouldn't even have to hit it, just lay off it more consistently. I don't understand why that pitch is so damn sexy to him after all those unsuccessful hacks at it. I would conject that he would have already eclipsed the 3000 mark. oh well, he's still pretty damn good

He's human.

Does that mean he'll be throwing knuckleballs in 7 years?

You know, I love those signs off to the side that identify the velocity and type of pitch. But it seems to give the impression that it's incredibly easy to identify what pitch is coming at you and at what speed. Imagine that little ball flying towards you and try to pick up the seams of the ball so you can instinctively react at how to hit the ball, let alone manage to make contact.
It pains me every time I see Biggio go after that slider low and away. But it makes me equally happy when he lays off it. It's just not as easy as it appears. Hell, if you need to be reminded, just go the batting cages and put a couple tokens in the stall with the fastest pitch speed you can find. And keep in mind those balls have no breaking action.

Steroids, obviously.
That would explain his head, too.
-
I'm sorry- I never meant to give the impression that I thought it was easy to lay off that pitch- I figure it's what separates about 75% of the guys who never make it from those that do.
I was just saying it's a pretty big hole for a no doubt, first ballot hall of famer to have, not that mere mortals should easily be able to do it.
I'm amazed any of these guys can make contact/ determine what to swing at for k or ball in the blink of an eye you have before making the decision to swing.
In little league and babe ruth my bat was so slow I had to swing at every pitch if I wanted to make contact- so I completely get it. Had to get into golf b/c that little white ball don't move until you make it. In my mind the hardest sporting feat in the world squaring up that baseball thrown by a major leaguer. Never meant to imply I thought it should be easy.

I think Chris Burke is the Chris Burke of his generation - I won't complain about him because Reggie has been so hot. I'll just tip my hat and hope we can get him out eventually.

Hey Racer X, what is up with the relentless bullshit courtesy you and the other BFiB spew around here? You and your fellow Jake fans have no effect on the outcome of the game, so why tip your hat to Burke and hope "we" can get him out eventually. If I was you, I'd be pissed that the team I follow allowed a .250 hitting rookie to hit for the cycle over two games. I don't "tip my hat" to home-run-or-nothing colonel sanders because pettitte fucked up and served one over the plate; it pissed me off, and the curtain call pissed me off even more. The sight of seeing him make the ballerina lunge for that fly ball, then ass plant into the ground, writhing in pain was the only thing that made me happy. Seeing LaGenius run in with his glove made me laugh.
Coming around here with your forced civility is not something that i appreciate. it is a large part of the reason that we sarcastically refer to you and your kind as "the best fans in baseball (BFiB)". we don't like your team. we think your manager is a joke, and we think your best player is a steroid freak who lies about his age.
we don't want a civilized series where we show mutual respect. we want the team we support to kick your team's ass.

Last year the Astros took us to seven games - your team has earned our respect - even if some of the fans haven't.
Just joking -
We too wish your team would role over and suck - don't think its happening no time soon.

I DON'T WANT YOUR RESPECT. Nobody here cares about whether you respect them, and i'm sure the astros don't care whether you respect them. I don't respect you because you choose to hide behind phony ethics of civility rather than take a real opinion. Take your respect and blow it up with your stadium.

So I get up this morning and head outside to work. As I walk to my car I see this Cardinal bird on the branch of one of my many trees. Across the street the neighbors bad ass teenagers, three boys named biggio, berkman, and burke are outside waiting for their old man to give them a ride. One of the bad asses burke pulls a firework from his pocket. It's a huge 3 feet rocket complete with a base. biggio lights it and berkman trips getting out of the way. Sure enough that sucker takes off as fast as lightning leaving a trail of sparks.
Just as I am about to utter a few mf's the Cardinal bird flies right over my head and grabs the rocket with both claws as it is about 10 feet off the ground. I mean this bird just tears into it. It reverses the rocket's direction and it crashes right on their old man's car with the bird letting go just in time and just as their father is coming out. Now he lays into the kids for all its worth and the Cardinal bird returns to my tree but not before pooping on each of the kids heads.
As I get in the car and pull away - I have forgotten all about last night and can't wait for Saturday.

Ahh geez, I forgot about Holly. You are at least an Astros fan and your posts are decent. Post smileys if that is your gig.
I'm frustrated with the trolls. In theory, the idea of other fans coming in and having good baseball talk seems alright, but it just doesn't seem to work out. Having trolls post smileys and :rolling eyes: got annoying.

In August, Burke slugged .544 w/ 6 doubles, 2 triples and 3 home runs. That's out of 18 total hits in 68 AB. He also had 6 walks. Nothing like it in September, though.
Of course in triple A, he had a .507 slg w/ 55 walks and 483 AB, but you know that. 315 avg., too. Well above what he did in AA, though.
Of course there are other players with inconsistent Slg histories. The Link
