Title: Berkman in left
Post by: pravata on October 03, 2005, 12:08:55 pm
On Sat.,8th inning, Burnitz on first, Barrett hit a low fly to left.  Berkman didn't move and just held up his glove.  The ball went 5 feet over his head and struck the base of the wall.  It went as a single and Burnitz advanced to third.  The inning ended on a groundout.  Has anyone seen any comment by Berkman on just what the hell he was doing?

Brown and Dierker sure didn't know, they commented on how strange it was.  Given his history this season, maybe he thought there were already 3 outs.

I heard one "theory" that Berkman was trying to pretend he was going to catch the ball to prevent the runners from advancing even more.

there were 2 outs, BG. a decoy is useless. my guess is he lost track of the outs and tried a useless decoy.

He coulda pretended to run back 3 steps and pretended to catch the damn thing and he'd have prevented the runners advancing even more.  I thought it was a deke at first too.  But he could've caught it.  Maybe he lost it in the lights.

Didn't look to me like he could've caught it.  He's also not so fleet of foot that turning, running and launching himself at the wall is going to help much.  Lastly, if he goes for it and misses, the Cubbies would still be rounding the bases.

I subscribe to the "lost track of outs" theory.

Wasn't my theory.

I think Berkman is only a slight upgrade over Lane in the outfield.  I think he probably screwed up.

Then he misjudged it, because it hit the base of the wall and he was playing about 10 feet from the wall.  No need for crashing, trotting back a couple steps on a ball hit right at him would have done it.

It went over his head like a bullet.  Berkman is a Professional Goof, but I think in this case he decided not to risk all, and make the safe play.  Don't forget, this is a bloke who lost a game once by getting tangled in a plastic grocery bag.

I suppose the explanation that he didn't think he could catch it is as good as any.  The play was more than odd.

My guess is that he knew there were 2 outs, but tried the useless decoy anyway because he didn't realize that every other player in the league isn't an airhead like he is.

Correct.  He thought to hisself "Now if I were running the bases..." and that was that.

Exactly.... and had the ball taken a steeper angle off of the wall, he took a needless chance in not being able to get a glove on it.

I'll go with- he lost it and acted like he had it, which makes him lucky it didn't pop him in the face.  The hacks on the fox broadcast acted like it was some kind of amazing decoy, but I just sat there with a WTF look on my face.
