The energy level of the team in this game looked to me like they think this thing is already won. It is not. The loss tonight allows them exactly one more loss in the regular season.
The real damage was done in two innings. In the 3rd, with no outs, Biggio singled, and Taveras reached on a bunt. Ensberg got a bad call on a ball 4. However, he did not have to follow that up by grounding into a double play. From that point until the 7th, the Astros had no base runners.
The other bad inning was the 7th. Burnitz was hit by a pitch; then a grounder by Barrett to Everett?s right, he went to 2nd. Burnitz may have beat the throw which went right over the bag, but Biggio flinched back avoiding contact with Burnitz, and the ball sailed to right. Burnitz advanced to third. He then scored on a wild pitch by Wandy Rodriguez. The wild pitch occurred in an atbat by the eminently K?able Patterson. That was the winning run.
In the 9th, Palmeiro, pinch hitting, walked. Charles Gipson went in to pinch run. With 2 outs Luke Scott scorched a roller into the gap in right center. Corey Patterson cut the ball off from going to the wall with a sliding stop. He got the ball to the cutoff Macias who fired a line drive two steps to the right of the plate. Gipson, now in a gallop, rounded third and was sent home. The ball beat him by two steps. He dropped down and tried to extend on Blanco. Blanco held onto the ball and the game was over.
Pettitte tomorrow, Biggest Game of the Season.
