Pettitte started the game giving up a homerun to Lee, his 45th of the season.
Trying to tie it in the 2nd, the Astros loaded the bases with no outs. Berkman had a chance to score from second on Lane?s single to center, but the rain had already turned the infield into sucking mud and he got stuck at 3rd. With no outs, the bottom 3 couldn?t score the run, although Ausmus tried smoking a liner down the 3b line. It was caught.
In the 3rd Cubs pitcher Jerome Williams called his own rain delay. After walking Ensberg, throwing 2 balls to Berkman in the pouring rain, Barrett ran out to the mound and waited, then the pitching coach came out; then the umpire, then the 3rd base ump, then the Cubs manager. All the while Garner is screwing up his face in the dugout. Ump says play ball. Williams stands around some more. Then walks towards the dugout. Ump says ?I say when we call it and I say play ball?. Williams throws ball 3 and home plate ump Paul Nauert says, ?OK now go in.?
Wrigley Field doesn?t need any help getting crappy. The infield is filled with potholes and rocks. The dirt in the infield turns to gum and the warning track to a slip and slide when it rains. Horrible field conditions all weekend.
When they came back from the one hour delay, Pettitte was still pitching and the Astros still weren?t scoring runs.
Coming back to the 3rd, runners 1st and 2nd, 2 outs, no clutch hit.
In the 4th, runner 3rd 1 out, no clutch hit, then Lane gets picked off.
But in the 7th, Palmeiro tripled home Everett. Palmeiro then scored when Taveras hit not only one his few sac flies but one of his few flies period, 2-1. Willy turned into the dugout, his arms raised in triumph.
Not so fast. In the bottom of the inning, Gallo replaced Pettitte (2 hits, 1 run) and gave up his 1st homerun of the season; a 2 run hanger to Burnitz.
But the Play of the Game came with 1 out in the 8th. Ensberg on first, Lamb hit a long fly to right center; Patterson ran right under the ball, if he had missed it, and he almost did, it snow coned, where he had his glove the ball would have hit him right in the nose. Ensberg would have scored with ease, he was 3 steps past second when the catch was made.
Day off Monday.
