Right after Harville threw the fastball to the Mexican Mullett for the homerun, I think I saw Brad Ausmus run out to the mound and it seemed like they were having this conversation,
Chad "Man that was a good one, I got a lot of air under that one."
Brad "What?!"
Chad "That homer, my entry for the night, we're trying to see who can give up the best homer right?"
Brad "Nooo... we're trying to win the game."
Chad "Oh... I'll stop then... Then what was Zeke doing ?"
Zeke was getting the ball up. By the 5th, when Harville found out the game plan, Astacio had given up 3 and Harville the one. For a while it was Morgan vs. the Nationals as he kept it close with 2 homeruns of his own. And in the 5th it was 6-3 Nationals.
In the 6th, 2 outs, runners 1st and 2nd, Taveras hit a bouncer up the middle just to the left of short. Bruntlett, breaking on the pitch, and busting it, miraculously beat the short flip to second. Biggio, following, hit the ball in exactly the same spot. Only this time, shortstop Guzman throws low to first. Gets by, two runs score. 6 to 5 now. John Patterson leaves the game with a quizzical look on his face, and everybody is up in the stands. Berkman didn't advance the score further as he flew out.
In the 8th, with 2 outs, Jason Lane pinch hit for Qualls. He lifted a majestic fly right in front of the Astros bullpen. The centerfielder somehow took the polar route, attempted an unnecessary sliding catch, and the upshot was Lane ended up standing on 3rd. Everybody is cheering. However Taveras walked and then Biggio blew the chance and popped up. That was it. The Astros didn't threaten Cordero, the league leader in saves, in the 9th.
So they failed to steal the first one.
Tonight, 7:05, another tough match up, Wanda Rodriguez vs. Livan Hernandez. Maybe somebody will get a Livan souvenir.
