Title: Double digits, 2-0, Cardinals
Post by: pravata on June 04, 2005, 12:31:09 am
It was a pitching duel between Andy Pettitte and Chris Carpenter, unfortunately the blades were not of a length.

Pasadena, featuring his alternate universe Fuish Manchu facial hair, battled through the Cardinals offense minus Rolen.  He went seven, gave up 1 run and struck out 5,  Pujols twice.  The second K featured a nifty frame by Ausmus of a low pitch for a called third strike.

Unfortunately, Pettitte got himself into a fix in the 3rd.  Two runners scratched to get themselves on, first and third, Edmonds, guessed right on an inside pitch, and hit a rope to right that missed being a 3 run homer by a biscuit.  It was a double and scored Carpenter from second.  But Pasadena bowed up and struck out Pujols and Sanders to end the inning.

The Astros had a chance in the 5th.  Everett, after not diving back from a high fastball quickly enough to suit a yapping Carpenter, smacked a base hit.  After Everett advanced to second on a ground out, Pettitte was up.  Jim Hickey had predicted Andy would get a hit, and with a runner on second we were praying Andy would get a hit.  That's what the Astros offense has come to.  Praying for a pitcher who hasn't yet crossed the Blutarski Line to get a hit.  And he did!   But he hit it too hard and Maximus could only advance to third.

1 out first and third, Taveras, missed a sign, Carpenter threw a low slider and Everett trying to score on the suicide squeeze was caught dead.  Tank Commander popped out and argued that the pitch, called a ball, should have been a strike.  HA! HA! shows what you know, Taveras had pulled the bat back, so it wasn't a strike.  Showed you.  Naturally Taveras followed this exhibition with a liner to right, Mensa sent Pettitte from second.  Pettitte was out by 24 feet.

In spite of notching their tenth shutout, the Astros hit the ball pretty good a couple times in run potential situations but right at people.  They at least made Carpenter sweat, by the 8th sweat was pouring off his cap.  They got 9 hits in all. Two hard hit balls worthy of mention, Ausmus lined out to first with runners on early and the game ended appropriately with Burke lining hard to third for a dp.

The scoring for the night ended in the 9th when Pujols greeted Springers' first pitch with a ticket to the train.

Tomorrow, Wandy and HQ vs. Marquis, starts at 3:05.
