As there are 2 weeks before the 2005 draft and interest is starting to pick up, we have decided to open a draft only thread.
Please post all your draft comments here so as to keep them in one centralized location. We will keep this blog open until after draft day, at which time we'll shut it down, and start working on the draft review.
We're going to move all earlier draft posts here so that they can stay open.

Is there a good place to find prospects for the upcoming MLB draft? and am i correct to think the Astros get sandwich picks for Beltran and/or Kent?

The Astros have the 24th pick in the first round.
They get a supplemental first round pick and the Mets' third round pick as compensation for Beltran.

The two picks for Beltran are the 38th (suppl. first round) and 91st (Met's 3rd round pick). This gives them 24, 38, 74, 91 and 106.
Nothing for Kent - he wasn't offered arb.

The Astros could drop 2 spots at each pick from 74 on down if Drew and Weaver don't sign by the end of this month.

BAonline did a mock first round draft last week. I'm told they that for the Astros they selected Cliff Pennington from A&M. Seemed a safe choice to me. He's got speed and apparently a good arm. Anyone seen him play and can offer some info on him?
Also, Agent Smith said he'd heard the Astros were scouting Jacob Marceaux from McNeese State at his last game vs UTSA. I predict the Astros will take him with their supplemental first round pick if Jacob is still on the board.

Or the usual best player on the board.

Best player.
Of course with a new GM and scouting director we have no history to base our guesses on. So who really knows. It'll be interesting to see if Purpura or Ricciarini give candid interviews like Hun did last year on the draft.

The buzz is getting louder and I'm amped for the Astros first, first round pick since '02. Memories of Wags 93, Berkman 97, Lidge 98, Burke 01 (Oh well). Hidden gems such as Oswalt, round 23 or Miller, round 20 maybe. Purp gets to make his stamp on the teams future, stay tuned.

here is a local kid to keep and eye on, RHP/Closer, Justin Vaclavik of UofH. I could see the Astros taking him inthe 4th or 5th round. Justin really struggled throwing strikes his first 2 years, outside of the Aggie regional in 2003. It finally clicked, and he got confidence and found the plate this season. I saw him hit 97 a couple times, but gnerally he was 92-94 pitching as the Cougars Closer. Good breaking stuff and a fastball that tails.
UH alreadly has two closers from the last 4 drafts in MLB, Ryan Wagner and Crain.

Anyone know what time all this goes down, or if there is a way to watch it live on the net?

The video portion will only cover the first 5 rounds. MLB radio (free) will cover the entire draft starting at 11:50. Use the link provided above by ETA.

Actually there's really nothing to watch other than mlb.com's "experts". The draft is done via phone teleconference.
