Title: Bullpen falters as Astros take one on the chin in New York
Post by: HudsonHawk on April 11, 2005, 11:55:11 pm
The Astros hit the road for the first time in the 2005 campaign, riding a 4-game winning streak, complete with a recent sweep of the Reds.  They arrived at Shea Stadium Monday afternoon to take on a Met club that lost its first five games, looking to impress the locals in their home opener.  But defensive miscues and a shaky bullpen couldn't overcome a solid outing by Andy Pettitte, and the short-lived streak came to a halt with an 8-4 loss.

The Astros drew first blood early, when a Morgan Ensberg double plated Craig Biggio.  The score stayed 1-0 through five innings, as Pettitte scattered a handful of hits and punched out five.  The Mets touched Andy for three tough-luck runs in the 6th, but the Astro bats came right back for a run in the 7th on an Orlando Palmeiro triple, and a pair of runs in the 8th on RBIs by Jason Lane and Jose Vizcaino.

So with the Astros leading 4-3, Russ Springer was summoned to work the 8th.  After a quick out, Springer walked the #8 hitter on four pitches, and gave up a seeing-eye single to the Met pinch hitter.  With runners on the corner, Springer incuded a comebacker to the mound in what seemed like a sure inning-ending double play.  But Springer hesitated, then threw off line to second base, and Adam Everett's relay throw to first wasn't in time to nip the speedy baserunner, allowing the Mets to tie the game 4-4.

Then the wheels came off.  A stolen base, a single, and a botched pop up plated two more runs, and another single score a pair, making it a 8-4 game.  The Astros went quietly in the 9th to end it.

The good guys will try to regroup on Wednesday (after an odd mid-series off day) with Roger Clemens going against Kaz Ishii.
