Title: Historical and horticultural...
Post by: Texifornia on October 04, 2019, 09:33:05 pm
When I look at video of old World Series from the '40s through at least the '60s I notice how poor the field conditions are. In front of the plate it is often all hard pan and there are dead spots in the outfield. After a full season of wear, the groundskeepers of the day were hard pressed to provide a playable surface.

Contrast that to today's postseason with virtually perfect playing surfaces regardless of climate or number of games played.

Historically, baseball's horticulture has never been better.

I think George Toma is the man most responsible for why fields are maintained so well today.
