There will be no no-hitter tonight (for Verlander, at least): Semien leads off with a single to LF.
-
Pop out hits the roof prior to being caught.
JV just gets him swinging.
-
Fucking bloop double to the opposite field drives in Semien (whom I am contemplating elevating to piss-ant status).
-
High cheese ends the inning.
JV didn't look sharp there, but the only hard hit ball was the leadoff single.
-
Springer walk, Altuve single to start things off
-
The GIDP bug has returned.
-
Brantley was pissed about that first strike call.
That was a tailor-made dp ball.
Up to Bregman.
-
Harmless F8 for Bregman.
-
Profar finally Ks after an 8 pitch AB.
-
Grossman Ks, Phlegmy lines out to Bregman.
Mid 2
A's 1-0
-
Fucking bloop double to the opposite field drives in Semien (whom I am contemplating elevating to piss-ant status).
Around here he's known as Mucus Semen,
-
When did the A's become known as the Sea Hags?
-
Alvarez F7
Bailey needs to reset for some reason.
Get on with it already.
-
Bailey's splitter gets Diaz.
Ball dug a burrow on the way to the catcher like bugs bunny.
Toro 4-3
Bats still contemplating things.
-
Semian gets another hit. He's been annoyingly productive.
-
Chapman Ks swinging.
-
When did the A's become known as the Sea Hags?
Unsure, but I think Neil bestowed that nickname on them.
-
Olson is a damn good player. I hate him.
-
Olson hits a towering 2 run homer.
FB down/in.
-
Son of a bitch!
-
Man the A's are not going down easy tonight. They are making JV throw a lot of pitches.
-
Man the A's are not going down easy tonight. They are making JV throw a lot of pitches.
The As are good.
-
What happened to all the vaunting? Overkill?
-
Canha singles.
Brown walks.
2.1 IP, 61 pitches for JV.
-
What happened to all the vaunting? Overkill?
I don't know.
But the last 2 games the pitching staff, particularly Miley and James, were the major culprits.
-
Davis Ks swinging.
-
I'm not anxious to see the bullpen have to work four innings again.
-
I'm not anxious to see the bullpen have to work four innings again.
Then you might want to watch the NFL game.
-
JV has not looked comfortable out there all night.
-
It's strange how the wheels can come off two or three games in a row after romping for several games.
-
3U ends the inning.
JV over 70 pitches.
Crucial to get another few innings out of him.
Also at least 4 runs would be nice.
-
It's strange how the wheels can come off two or three games in a row after romping for several games.
"That's the way baseball go."
- Ron Washington
-
"That's the way baseball go."
- Ron Washington
Indeed.
-
Chirinos singles to right center.
Production from catchers is welcome.
-
I thought Reddick had knocked that one out.
-
Reddick 3-0, then 3-2, doubles off the top of the wall in right.
2nd/3rd no outs.
(Ball hit the yellow stripe)
-
I thought Reddick had knocked that one out.
I was convinced he was gonna get a splitter.
-
Finally put Profar in a position where he had to make a throw. That guy is a major adventure out there.
-
Wtf?

-
Springer 3-0, fouls 3-1, grounds up the middle, Profa's throw pulls Chapman off the bag.
Chirinos scores, Reddick to 3rd.
A's ask for a review . . . Out at 1st
Reddick on 3rd with 1 out.
-
I didn't see anything that could overturn a safe call. Maybe I'm blind, though. Or biased

Same here. Maybe there was a zoned in view that showed it more clearly.
George didn't protest.

Altuve fails to put the ball in play.
Up to Brantley.
-
Altuve fails to put the ball in play.
Up to Brantley.
Typical
-
HPU gives Brantley another bad strike.
-
All Altuve had to do was a ground ball.
-
Brantley 3-2, grounds out 3U.
-
Dammit, Altuve. So selfish.
-
That was a letdown.
-
Dammit, Altuve. So selfish.
That was the time for one of his crazy bunt attempts.
-
All Altuve had to do was a ground ball.
Ground ball. Bunt. Flyball.
Just put it in play.
Wasted that chance.
-
That was the time for one of his crazy bunt attempts.
Then he would get bitched at for trying to bunt. Altuve can't do anything right in this forum.

They've shown there is no real standard of review. Sometimes they overturn calls when there is no clear evidence to overturn, sometimes they let calls stand where there is lots of clear evidence to overturn. It's just whatever they feel like at any given moment. And there is no sign the commissioner's office cares one bit.
-

Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
Fuck that. The point is to score the run. A bunt would have been good. He is hacking. All he cares about is hits. He has no clue about what the team needs.
-
Altuve does a whole bunch right but not as much as he could with a little more focus and a little more effort in certain instances.
-
Grossman pops out to Diaz in foul territory
Phlegmy Ks swinging
Semian pops out to Diaz in foul territory
-
Altuve does a whole bunch right but not as much as he could with a little more focus and a little more effort in certain instances.
Altuve gets his hits. We needed a ground ball. Hacking, chasing hit. K.

Altuve is an elite hitter. It is impossible to fathom how much better he would be if he had any sort of plate discipline or demonstrated any sort of situational awareness whatsoever.

On another subject. Profar and throwing doesn't go together very well.

Bregman 3-2, pops out to Grossman in foul territory
Alvarez 4-3 (Profar 1 hops the throw; terrible)
Diaz 6-3

Yet so far, the A's having suffered for it.

I just discovered that U-Verse quit carrying NFL Network.

I just discovered that U-Verse quit carrying NFL Network.
I heard uverse will be gone before long. They are supposed to (according to cord cutters anyway) stop accepting new customers by the end of the year. We have uverse, so obviously I'll be following that story.

Josh bailed out but it's only temporary.
-
Toro safe on TE6
Chirinos lines out to left
Reddick Ks swinging at a ball in the dirt
Springer 6-4 FC
Nothing doing.
3-1 A's

No one is criticizing him for lack of perfection, dude. We all know that the greatest batters in the league fail 70% of the time. I don't mind that he expands the zone. He gets a lot of hits on bad pitches. There have been other hitters like that. I'd just love to see him be a little more selective. More importantly, time and time again he goes up to the plate in important situations and shows zero recognition of what's needed at that time. I don't know where that comes from, why he's not more sensitive to the game situation.

WS Game 7 1st inning. More of that when time is right.

Brown F8
Davis Ks swinging
Davis 3U

Of course I'd like to see him be more selective as well. My thought is simply, at this point in his career does any expect that to suddenly change? He is what he is. So why (not YOU) constantly bitch about it? What he is won an MVP so I guess I'm mostly satisfied with him. But I get what you're saying.

And right on cue he draws a walk.

Altuve walks.
Very patiently I might add.

I think he presses in some game situations. So even if he knows what he should do, he fails to even try to put it into effect. Sometimes lack of clutch, or whatever someone wants to call it, can be mental rather than physical.

Ha. Nice.

I don't think anybody is expecting him to change, and that's actually what's so exasperating. It's not like asking to re-tool his swing or something. It's something that would seem to achievable: be more selective in certain easily recognizable situations. And yet the change never comes. Hence the frustration.
-

We've all seen him fritter away a 3-0 advantage before. Well done this time leading off the inning down two runs.

I'm sure it's that easy. That's why everyone draws 100 walks per year.

Altuve steals 2nd, Brantley works a full count and walks.
Nice AB.
-
... be more selective in certain easily recognizable situations.
I'm not sure it's as simple as that, even if it seems that way. Ballplayers are like everyone else. They're creatures of habit.

As everybody is pointing out, if it were as simple as I wish, everybody would do it.
-

I certainly didn't expect Bregman to strike out in that situation.
-
That was about the last outcome I expected from a Bregman AB.
-
Bregman Ks swinging.
Melvin makes the call to the pen.

Maybe I'll remind myself of that the next time I bitch about umpires? Nah...

WTF, Altuve!

Welp.

Ok. This is one of those times I will criticize altuve. WTF, Jose?

Yes, situational awareness. I get it.

Altuve tries to steal 3rd, Diekman throws him out.
WTF

That was about as piss-poor of an inning as I've seen in a while.

Yordan didn't help either. Sigh

So typical. The pitcher still had the ball.
-
Yordan carved the fuck up.
-
It has been noted again and again, but when Yordan gets down in the count he is fucked.
-
JV got his stuff together, but now the offense is sputtering.
And we get to see what the bullpen will do.
-
Jesus. Defend that. Wtf was he doing?
-
Inexplicable.
The steal attempt, Yordan missing a pitch *before* it bounced in front of the plate, then taking strike 3.
WTF was that?

JV gutted out 6 innings. Struck out 11.

When someone figures out a reason to steal third in that situation, please post it.

Joe Smith in.
Grossman F7
Phlegmy Ks swinging
Semian Ks looking
Smith was as sharp as I can remember this season

Alvarez at the plate.
Stay there, tell him what pitch is coming, then jog home.
-
Alvarez at the plate.
Stay there, tell him what pitch is coming, then jog home.
If you want to dance around 2nd base some to distract the pitcher in the hope that he'll lose a little focus and groove something to Alvarez, then by all means do so. Just don't get picked off.
-
God there have been some awful swings tonight.
Wow, what a catch by Profar.
-

He did not get picked off. He took off for third with the pitcher holding the ball.
-
Diekman still in
Diaz 3-1, pops out to 1st in foul territory
Toro flies out to Profar on a nice over the shoulder catch
Chirinos walks
Gurriel hits for Reddick
Melvin goes to the pen
-
Yusmeiro Petit in to face Yuli
Gurriel takes away 1-0, misses 91 mph FB 1-1, misses another 1-2, takes a breaking ball down 2-2, fouls to stay alive, takes a ball 3 inches off the plate for strike 3.
-
That was brutal, blue.
-
Yuli has a great at bat and then gets fucked in the ear.
-
James is better.
-
Josh James back on the horse.
Yuli to 1st, Diaz to 3rd, Tucker in RF
Chapman Ks looking
Olson Ks looking
Canha singles to right
Brown strikes out swinging
Much, much better from James
-
I implore thee, someone please fix this offense.
-
Altuve!
-
Bregman walks
Melvin to the pen for lefty to face Alvarez
-
Puk faces Alvarez
Yordan takes high 1-0, low/away 2-0, takes 99 mph heater that paints the outside corner 2-1, then singles thru the left side, Bregman to 2nd
Diaz will face a righty . . .
-
He did not get picked off. He took off for third with the pitcher holding the ball.
I understand that. That wasn't what I was trying to convey. I was talking about a hypothetical.
-
Treinen pitching
Diaz fouls 0-1, takes inside 1-1, waves at a slider 1-2, barely stays alive on another 1-2, watches a slider away in the dirt 2-2, another low 3-2, another way outside to walk.
Bases loaded for Kyle Tucker.
-
Tucker takes low/away 1-0, fouls a FB 1-1, takes low 2-1, can't check on a low slider says 3BU 2-2, same pitch same result ends the inning
-

Tempting pitches. They started out looking like fastballs at the bottom of the zone, but of course that's not where they wound up.

Yes

So he struck out on balls 3 and 4?
My feed cut out before they showed the replay on strike 2.
Strike 3 HPU made the call that he swung.
-
Yes
Damn. Bases loaded.
-
Osuna K, and 2 groundouts.
2nd out was a nice play by Diaz.
-
My feed cut out before they showed the replay on strike 2.
Strike 3 HPU made the call that he swung.
Strike 2 was a check that could have gone either way. His bat stopped pretty much right at the front of the plate and parallel with it. But a rookie isn't going to get the benefit of the doubt there.
-
Damn. Bases loaded.
Treinen was all over the place until those last 2 pitches. Neither was a strike but both seemed to be exactly where he wanted them.
-
Damn. Bases loaded.
Both of the last two innings.
-
Hendriks on the bump
Chirinos walks; Straw in to run
-
Well, there you go. Now we've got Straw on 1st with no outs. Do you dare try a steal so you have three shots at driving him in?
-
Gurriel singles thru the right side, Straw holds at 2nd
-
Stubbs runs for Gurriel
Springer takes away 1-0, takes a FB at the knees 1-1, takes a bounced slider 2-1, misses high heat 2-2, whiffs on a FB off the plate
-
Aaarrgghhh. 0-8 w/RISP so far.
-
Altuve, the topic of much discussion, misses a slider 0-1, takes 1 hundo high/outside 1-1, misses a FB that was high/inside 1-2, flies out to RF, Straw advances to 3rd
-
Brantley up with tying run on 3rd, 2 outs
Fouls a high FB straight back 0-1, fouls again (late) 0-2, fouls again, looks at strike 3
A's win 3-2
-
Crap. 0-10 w/RISP. Lord only knows how many LOB.
-
Uncle Mike, why you no swing?
-
Brantley must have been thinking slider there.
-
He had the first pitch well timed; just missed and fouled it straight back. Late/defensive on everything else. That's what 98-100 mph will do.
-
A month ago Brantley would have hit that last strike 400+ ft
-
On to KC. I hope the change of scenery jump-starts things.
-

You know, 10 years ago everybody ooh'ed and ahh'ed because Aroldis Chapman was hitting 100mph. Now it seems like every bullpen has at least one guy who can hit 100mph.
-
JV battled thru 6 and the pen was great.
Oakland hit 1 big fly and the Astros couldn't buy a hit with RISP.
