Semien leads off with a shiftfuck ground ball single
-
1-0 As
-
C'mon, Wade, buckle down here.
-
Shiftfuck single
Walk
Single
Shiftfuck single
2-0 As, runners at the corners, one out
-
They're definitely hittin' 'em where they ain't.
-
3-0
-
Feels like last week, except he got someone out this time.
-
Another shiftfuck single...bases loaded, one out
Bullpen action in the pen
-
Maybe they shouldn't shift against these guys. Or at least not with Miley on the bump.
-
Is he tipping pitches? A flaw is in his delivery? Guys usually don't go from third in the league in ERA to eight runs over 1/3 of an inning in two outings.
-
4-0
Bases still loaded
-
We've seen this movie before, and it wasn't enjoyable.
-
6-0
-
This is fucking ridiculous.
-
And that’s it for Miley. Once again, can’t get out of the first inning.
-

One more question mark for Luhnow in the off-season.

He’s just throwing puss. Soft contact and the shift killed him to start the i inning.
-
FIFY.
And that’s it for Miley. Once again, can’t get out of the first third of an inning.
-
More FIFY.
One more question mark for Luhnow Hinch in the off-season postseason.
-
7-0
-
Have they hit anything hard?
-
Finally the inning is over. But the As jump out to a 7-0 lead. Astros coming to bat
-
Have they hit anything hard?
Several balls hit hard.
-
Last two starts, Miley has gone 0.1 innings and given up 12 runs.
-
Will need a minimum of 26 outs from the pen, the day before a scheduled “bullpen day”
-
Springer Dinger!
-

Wasn't a problem for most of the season.

Tomorrow's bullpen day just became a Framber day. I hope he's up to it.
-
Time to start chipping away again.
-

Yup. Seeing-eye singles see past non-shifts too.
-
After 1...7-1 As
-
9-1
-
In 14 at bats the As hav 10 hits.
-
Is it too early to bring in a position player?
-
Detroit 10-8 over NY in the 6th.
-
I believe this is called a Reality Check
-
11-1
Every A’s hitter has a hit, and only one has not scored. Josh Reddick has yet to come to the plate for the Astros.
-

Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug.
-
Really impressive counter punch by the A's. They are a team to be reckoned with.
-
Springer Dinger, The Sequel
11-2
-
Bad luck for Miley. I hope he keeps after it.
All we need is a split. Everything else is gravy.
-
At this point, I’d just like to see an inning where the Astros don’t give up a crooked number. Baby steps.

Certainly what it sounded like on the radio.
-
13-2
-
Biagini in...getting crushed
-
15-2
-
Still gotta get 18 more outs this game.
-
These are the kinds of games that can ruin you for weeks.
-
17-2
-
At this point, I’d just like to see an inning where the Astros don’t give up a crooked number. Baby steps.
Sorry.
Did you want that tonight?
-
Biagini out.
As have 17 runs on 18 hits. They’ve made 9 outs.
-
That was literally like batting practice. It would be hard to imagine a batting practice pitcher inducing more hard contact.
-
Miley and Biagini combine for 13 runs in 0.1 innings.
-
Two screaming line drives for the Astros are outs. One of those nights.
-
Astros throw in the towel. Pretty much a new lineup in the field.
-
18-2
-
19-2
-
I'm absolutely sure this has nothing to do with the slurp job last night over the whipping the Astros put on the A's.
-
Every A has multiple hits. In the 5th.
-
We’re half way...19-2
-
Machete!
19-3
-
BBGs are serving up a mountain size helping of humility.
-
The next two games are really going to be interesting. I'll bet Verlander is already chomping at the bit.
-
Framber in. So much for him starting tomorrow.
-
Framber in. So much for him starting tomorrow.
Urquidy?
-
Framber in. So much for him starting tomorrow.
So who will start?
Urquidy?
-
Detroit walks it off against NY, 12-11.
Fuck the Yankees!
-
Machete!
19-3
So, you’re sayin’ there’s a chance?
-
Two soft rollers to 2B result in shiftfuck singles. Story of the night.
-
20-3
-
Only one run that inning, and it wasn’t even Framber’s fault.
-
If these guys would line up and play the infield rather than array themselves in some kaleidoscopic pattern here and there they might just record a fucking out every now and then.
-
20-4
-
20-5
-
I'm absolutely sure this has nothing to do with the slurp job last night over the whipping the Astros put on the A's.
Did Johnny Slurpjob position the infielders in the first inning?
This is just fucking payback.
-
Finally...a ZERO!
At the stretch...20-5
-
Alright, past my bedtime. If the Astros come back, I’ll miss it.
-
Did we win?
-
Did we win?
Unlikely.
-
The good news is, the Astros scored a touchdown, and the extra point was good.
The bad news... Well, there was a lot of it.

The bad news... Well, there was a lot of it.
For Biagini and Miley especially.

In some of his recent outings, his cutter hasn’t been as sharp and he’s been wild. In these last two, he’s felt like the cutter has been on point. The A’s tagged him for seven singles and a walk on Tuesday in chasing him in the first inning. Their hitters committed to staying inside Miley’s cutter and hitting it the other way.
“I think the other team has a really good approach against me right now and I’m not making the adjustment,” Miley said. “Again I felt like, it’s crazy, I located pitches pretty well for the nine batters I was in there. I got singled to death tonight. But at the same time, I’ve got to make better pitches.”
The cutter revived Miley’s career last season while he was with the Brewers, and his heavy usage of it isn’t likely to change. It lacked in August on the days his fastball command faltered, as the two pitches work in tandem. But he threw 20 of his 28 pitches for strikes on Tuesday, so that wasn’t the issue against the A’s.
“Their approach was pretty incredible,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said.
After he was bounced Tuesday night, Miley spent the rest of the game studying video. In his opinion, the A’s hitters’ swings didn’t suggest that he tipped his pitches. If it’s as simple as the opposition figuring out an approach to combat his cutter, he will have to adjust.

They intentionally beat the shift with stay inside the ball swings. Look for more of that.

What's the counter to the counter?
Bust them inside?
-
What's the counter to the counter?
Statistics.
When the data models indicate that the infielders need to be positioned elsewhere, the Astros will move them.
Unfortunately, now is not the time to be collecting more data points.

Play straight up at least if we need a dp.
Pitching inside is not the complete answer. Inside out the ball the other way.

Which Miley will tell you is horseshit. Simien’s leadoff AB tipped the strategy.

Exactly. I am surprised it took so long.
I am reminded of a story I heard from a high school coach. His team was facing a fire baller who could not throw his curve for a strike. So he had them practice hitting fastballs thrown from in front of the mound and laying off curveballs all the time. Simple but effective.

I thought maybe. :-)
