Altuve punches out on ball seven. He just will not be denied.
-
Astros have made up their minds...if the pitch isn’t in the dugout, they’re hacking.
-
Kalas: THERE’S A BALL DRILLED DEEEEEP TO CENTERFIELD...AND YORDAN DID NOT GET ALL OF THAT ONE!!!” As the ball is caught 20 feet in front of the track.
-
Great shot of Hinch in the dugout shaking his head. He knows what he has in the bullpen.

I thought it was gone too with the launch angle he had. He must have gotten slightly jammed.

Big swing, but I think he was out in front and hit off the end of the bat a little.

Yuli reaches on an error to leadoff the 5th...come on boys, make em pay!

Good inning.
Biagini throws up a clean 0 after the Astros' big inning. Good to see.

Extreme shift on Alvarez...all 7 fielder are on the right side of the field.

Alvarez beat the shift with hard hit ball to deep....ummm...second base, I guess...SS fielded it in shallow RF

Diaz with a sac fly to plate Alvarez, Yuli to 3B...one out...
-
Chirinos pops out behind the plate...actually that ball came really close to coming back fair as Chirinos stood at the plate and watched it.
-
Diaz with a sac fly to plate Alvarez, Yuli to 3B...one out...
That makes me so happy. Not only does Diaz do his job by getting the ball into the outfield, he puts into right field so he also gets the runner at second over to third.
ETA: Chirinos' pop out notwithstanding.

Runners on the corners, two out for Springer...

How the fuck does McHugh get the win and not Biagini?

No idea. He faced two batters and got one of them out, right?

And gave up a double to the other one.

And gave up a double to the other one.
I'm not necessarily advocating for it and it would fuck up historical records but I think what qualifies as the winning pitcher might need to be reconsidered. I even think the 5 innings for a starter is a bit archaic in today's game.
-
I don't see how anybody could argue that Biagini wasn't the most effective pitcher tonight.
-
How the fuck does McHugh get the win and not Biagini?
Because the default scorer's judgment is "first guy after the starter" ... or maybe with luck, "first guy to record an out after the starter".
Not a whole lot of "judgment" involved.

I'm far from an expert, but...
Weren't the go ahead runs scored b/f Biagini threw his 1st pitch?
McHugh came into the game w/ the Jays leading 1-0, 2 outs, and a runner on 1st.
He stopped them.
Tho he gave up a 2B and there were runners @ 2nd & 3rd, the score was still 1-0 Jays when he got the 3rd out.
Seems like the only Biagini could get from this was a hold since he inherited the lead.

I thought McHugh came in the bottom of the 5th....let's go to the box score....nope, it was the 4th. So you are absolutely correct. McHugh was the pitcher of record when the Astros took the lead. McHugh gets the win. I was thinking Miley came out after the Astros scored in the 5th, but obviously my mind is failing.
A "harrumph" for Snuffy!

From mlb.com:
A pitcher receives a win when he is the pitcher of record when his team takes the lead for good -- with a couple rare exceptions. First, a starting pitcher must pitch at least five innings (in a traditional game of nine innings or longer) to qualify for the win. If he does not, the official scorer awards the win to the most effective relief pitcher.
There is also a rarely used clause where an official scorer can deem a relief pitcher's appearance "brief and ineffective." (For example, if a reliever relinquished a one-run lead by allowing three runs, but was still in line for a win after his team scored four runs in the following inning -- that may qualify.) If that's the case, the scorer can award the win to a pitcher who followed that "brief and ineffective" pitcher. Which relief pitcher earns the win specifically is also up to the judgment of the official scorer.
I don't think I've ever seen the 2nd paragraph come into play, didn't know that possibility existed actually.

I may have seen that invoked a time or two, but it's pretty obscure. Obviously that was not the case with McHugh last night, as the Astros were already behind, and he did not give up a run, even though his appearance was brief. He was rightly the "pitcher of record" when the Astros took the lead for good.

He did give up a 2B, but he threw 11 strikes out of 14 pitches, including 8 of 10 strikes to K Biggio for the 3rd out - it was a battle!.
The OS must have called that "effective", especially after seeing Milley take 95 pitches to get 52 strikes....

Doesn't the first paragraph say it's up to the scorer since Miley didn't go 5?

I think/thought if the starter does not go five it is scorer’s discretion as to who pitched most effectively, not who was pitching when the winning team took the lead. Is that wrong?
-
I declare Joe Biagini the Official OWA Certified Winning Pitcher of last night's game.*
*Not redeemable for an actual win in any meaningful statistical accounting, but we appreciate the performance; in addition cash reward for anyone who can produce an effective bullpen arm or three for the stretch run

I think that's only if there is no other pitcher of record, and the starter does not qualify. The rule book says:
"The official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher that pitcher whose team assumes a lead while such pitcher is in the game, or during the inning on offense in which such pitcher is removed from the game, and does not relinquish such lead"
The exception to this rule is the starting pitcher who leaves with a lead but does not pitch enough innings to qualify, in which case the "most effective reliever" rules apply. But if reliever enters when his team is trailing, and leaves with the lead, he is the pitcher of record, and if his team maintains the lead, he is the winning pitcher. This is the case last night with McHugh.

Thanks, guys, for turning the Game Day thread into a Baseball #101 lesson.
No time for an after action analysis during the game, but after....
Much obliged.

Ok. Logical.
