Title: 2005 big 3 vs 2019 big 3
Post by: doyce7 on August 02, 2019, 03:28:31 pm
Good debate I saw on Twitter today. Which is the better 3 man rotation, Clemens/Oswalt/ Pettitte or Verlander/Cole/Greinke?

I hope the latter. The former did not win a game in the WS.

The 05 guys also had a much much worse supporting cast though. Does anybody from 05 other than those 3, Berkman and Lidge play a meaningful role on this team? I don't think so but I could be wrong.

I'd take:

Ausmus
Qualls
Wheeler

Yeah you're right about Ausmus, he'd be the starting catcher on this team.

Wheeler for sure, forgot how great he was that year.

Qualls I feel like is about the same level as many guys we have now

Berkman over Reddick
That was my thinking as well, Berkman/Springer/Brantley sounds like a pretty damn good outfield 3. At least with the bat

Also keep in mind that 2 of the 3 in 2005 were cheating.

We might find a spot for Wandy.

2008-2013ish Wandy can be in my rotation any day. 2005 Wandy doesn't get close to this roster

Need to find a spot for Chris Burke. That dude had a clutch bat.

The Astros' 2005 World Series roster is littered with players that did little/nothing afterward.  Classic example of a window slamming shut.

Hitters:
- Bagwell retired
- Vizcaino retired after 2006
- Biggio continued his decline and retired in 2007
- Ausmus only had two more full seasons, then played 57 games in 2009-2010
- Burke peaked in 2006, then his production fell off a cliff before retiring in 2009
- Everett never played a full season after 2006, averaging only 59 games/season the last five seasons of his career
- Lane's 2006 was disastrous, career effectively done after 2007
- Palmeiro only made 250 PA in 2006-2007
- Bruntlett was decent in 2006-2007 but never had more than about 200 PA in a season

Pitchers:
- Clemens went DQ, retired in 2007
- Pettitte never came close to his 2005 success
- Backe got the injury bug, then got the shit beat out of him by crooked cops
- Gallo and Astacio never pitched after 2006

In retrospect it's amazing that team won the league.

It’s not like the Sox were great, how many of the 2005 Sox play for the 2019 Astros?  1?

I would love to have the 2005 version of Mark Buehrle on this team but I'm happy to settle for Wade Miley.  Paul Konerko was pretty good too. But fuck those guys.
