Likely a dumb question. Asking cause I don't know - wondering who might know...
Depending on the nature of the malady and with as extensive precautions as possible, are players on the IL ever traded?
Would a team allow a physical by another team on a player on the IL as a possible prelude to a trade?
Don't want another Aiken (http://www.orangewhoopass.com/forums/index.php?topic=120818.0), but his price may be cheaper.
(Changed link to OWA thread.)

This type of thing came up last year with the Josh Donaldson trade https://sports.yahoo.com/report-mlb-clubs-unhappy-josh-donaldson-trade-191250879.html
Players on the IL are not allowed to be traded, I think.

TY
Did not realize or did not remember that Aiken was drafted #1 the next year by the Indians, #17 (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2699686-brady-aiken-rejected-5m-and-got-hurt-now-past-no-1-pick-fights-for-mlb-future), and signed for $2.5 mil while still healing from TJS.
Understand that would be different from a trade acquisition, since he was not "owned" by another team, but he became a part of the team despite his injury...

He is the only one available (within reason) that I would give up Tucker for. Casey Stern on MLB radio has been pimping a trade involving Syndargaard and Dominic Smith to Houston for Tucker, James and other prospects for about 2 weeks now. Mentions it almost daily. Stern is a Mets guy at heart. Don’t know if he has inside info or just saying what he wants to happen, but he’s been begging for this deal to go down. Discussed it with Duquette again today.

Noah S. Sounds good. Two more years of control and relatively cheap. What accounts for this year's inflated (by about 50% over career average) era?

I don’t know, but, if the Astros target him, I’ll assume they have a plan.

Walks and hits are roughly his career average, strikes are down slighly(9.7-8.8K/9). Homer rate is double what he's had yhe last few years at 1.1 HR/9, in 16 and 18(only 7 starts in 17) his HR/9 was 0.5
Seems like the homerun has been the biggest factor but pitching for the Mets and how toxic things seem up there probably doesn't help.

Bumgarner has been by far the better pitcher than any of the other pitchers we are rumored to be looking at. The problem with that is he is pitching so well, and the Giants are on such a roll, that they are less likely to trade him now. Morsi said on radio this afternoon that the talk out of SF now is they are much more likely to trade Watson or Smith than Bumgarner and that they feel like they owe it to the fans and Bochy to keep him and play this out. Things may have to really go south for the Giants over the next 10 days to trade him.

I think I’d be happy with Minor. He’s looked good against us this year except for the long balls last night. Overall, his numbers look good.
I keep waffling though. I like that Stroman has a ground ball rate of almost 60%. If we are fortunate enough to make the playoffs, that could play big against the teams you would likely face who all hit homers at an alarmingly high rate.
I would love Bumgarner’s toughness in our rotation.

Kevin Goldstein joined the Astros on Aug. 31, 2012, and was named Director of Pro Scouting in January 2014.
In addition to consulting with the General Manager on trades, free agent signings and other baseball transactions, Kevin oversees the Astros pro scouting efforts, which includes comprehensive scouting of both minor league and Major League players across the 30 MLB clubs as well as independent leagues and foreign professional leagues.

Who says he's scouting? He is at Wrigley according to his Tweet Instagram, maybe he is there for the food and ambiance, and it is a coincidence that there is a high school All-American baseball game there today. Too bad for him all the seats face the field and he'll have to avert his gaze so as not to observe any of the action on the field.

I would love to have him, but I can’t believe this happens. Why? There are at least 7 teams, if you believe the reports, who are in on Minor. If true, that ask from the Rangers can be somewhat significant. Significant enough that I can’t believe Luhnow gives anyone in the division, especially the Rangers, above average prospects. I’d pay a little more to get Stroman or Ray, but that’s me.

Interesting in that they viewed him as a reliever, so maybe he starts in the season and slides to the pen for the postseason?

Card's bats could not find Alvarez today. Check that - only once that I remember.
Cards announcers started "chirping" as Alvarez RAN the ball in after O'Neill's 1B in the 3rd, saying he must be "afraid" to throw.
Did he have to throw with the infielders since he was moving toward them and the runners (1st & 3rd) were not trying to advance?

Maybe not, but I would think SOP would be to get the ball into Correa's hands as quickly as possible.

Personally I think adding a quality starting pitcher is all they need. However I believe the other "best" teams in the league are in need of more help than Houston is.

I think it's just chicken. The sellers are so few and their assets so valuable they have little incentive to budge from their high asking prices before the last minute.

That is the #1 need for sure. I think a quality LHP in the pen also is a need. A backup catcher is icing on the cake but not a necessity.
-
I think Luhnow has decided who and how much he will give up in a trade. If that doesn't get him what he wants, then he is willing to stand pat. With a three man rotation, a shaky bull pen and losing 100+ man games from all star/mvp ball players, the Astros still have more wins than any AL team and only trail the Dodgers by one game for having the most wins in MLB.

You are probably correct. I hope he has an answer for the back of the rotation if he stands pat.

You can be a great team and still have a few roster holes. This is a great team, for my money, the best in baseball but you can always add more. The Dodgers will, the Yankees will and the Astros probably will too

Relying on in-house resources looks very risky from here. Who knows when or if Peacock will be healthy. Urquidy looks good now but so did Valdez for a few games. Armenteros got crushed in his last AAA outing. Bielak has looked good for the last month or so. He could be an option.

I saw Bielak pitch during his hot streak. He was not good. McCurry has been good out of the pen every time I saw him. RHP, though.

I think the difference between Valdez and Urquidy is who they had the good games against. Framber had good games against the Orioles and Blue Jays, 2 of the worst teams/offenses in the league. Urquidy on the other hand was against the Rangers and Cardinals, one is an average team with a good lineup and the other is a good team with a good lineup.

Nope. Are they serious about Madbum?
The Yahoo report that triggered this closed by stressing that the source still did not expect Bumgarner to be dealt.

For backup catcher, I wonder if Kemp could fetch Maldonado

Good thought. Kemp deserves better than the Cubs, but i’d Like to have Maldonado back.

Well, I hope the Yahoo guy got his clicksbait worth posting the teams were “engaged.”
-
If they stand pat then I think the answer for the back of the rotation will be "in October you don't need a back of the rotation, those guys are in the bullpen or not on the roster at all"

All well and good, but in 2017 Morton and McCullers won the WS by pitching relief. Urquidy and Armenteros?

Huh, good point.

100%. That's just what I think the spin will be if they don't make a move for a starter

Will help some. One more year of control. Lots of strikeouts; lots of walks; lots of home runs. Strom can probably turn him into Sandy Koufax.

He’s been the guy I’ve wanted all along so I hope this deal goes through. I’m greedy though. I’d like Wheeler too!

Hell. I want them all.

I think I'm at the point where I'm fine with most anyone they are looking at and just ready for them to pick one!

I want all the good ones. Or at least all the ones Luhnow and all want.

Apparently Madbum may still be an option. They like Rojas at RR. Do it.

I like your thinking Jim. Rojas wouldn’t stop me from doing that deal.

Rojas looks like he is going to be a good MLB player. Hard to give him up for a rental but if Luhnow does it I am all for it.

Wow! Really hoping for this.

He is potentially a "help now" player so that makes this at least a possibilty. I have read they probably are going to stand pat unless the haul is ridiculous or if the haul can at least be spun that players received can help this year.

Calling it a "done deal." Also saying in talks for Lucroy.

I know nothing about Ray except he walks too many. He is under club control?
Lucroy is on the IL. No interest in Maldonado?

Yes, Ray under control thru next season.

I'd like Ray and Andrew Chaffin from Arizona.

Lucroy should be coming off the IL today.

DBacks and Yankees start at noon. If nothing is announced before then can anyone watch the game to see if Ray is in the dugout?

A reunion with Marisnick. Wow.
We have tried to get Lucroy more than once in years past. Someone must like him.

I'm on it, will watch the AZ feed and see what they say.
-
Ray in the dugout, said he was sitting by himself before the game talking to his family on facetime.
-
Homer, your friend apparently misled you.

Would a GM (in this case Luhnow) agree on a trade (say, Ray) and then ask them to wait until the last minute to announce it so other teams like Yankees wouldn't have time to counter with another trade? Probably dumb question, but asking anyhow.

They passed on the things they heard. The information was attributed to specific people. I think it demonstrates how tight the circle of trust is.

Are you suggesting that your source isn't the Astros GM himself?!

Of course, you are correct. I see evidence of that in RR.
