As reported in the GZ, Sneed is up, Framber is down. Smith moved to the 60 day IL to make room on the 40 man.
Busriders: What's the story on Sneed?
-
I know the Astros are trying to catch lightning with one of these guys, but perhaps it is time to make a trade for a starter and a reliever. I don't know what happened to Devenski, but he is not good.

Uhhhh, Devo came in and murdered the Pirates for two innings. He was extended thanks to Framber being a black hole of bullshit last night, and ran out of gas.
Shitting on Devo after 2 monster innings of relief work is a little questionable.

I'm pretty sure I saw him last year. Based on that recollection, I'm only expecting a guy that can give them innings, not someone in their long-term plans.

Yeah, I tuned out last night, but I thought Devo has looked a lot better in the recent outings I saw. He was pitching good enough that I thought he would be a useful piece again.

I have seen Sneed at least twice in RR. Throws hard. Is erratic.

Is Cy young?
I'll show myself out....

Is Cy young?
No, not that Young, but at 26 he is relatively young.

I'll follow...

Here’s last years scouting report on Cy…not really that in depth

This one goes into a bit more detail but from 2016…

Agreed. He looked very good the first 2 innings and and he got burned by a Vlad Sr style cricket double and a homer.
They mentioned on the broadcast that he hasn't thrown more than 2 innings in a game since 2017.

Well, he may pitch for a while today. Peacock has already given up 2 in the first and the Pirates are still batting....

He is a character - lives the off season in Alaska hunting and being a substituent teacher (https://www.mlb.com/news/cy-sneed-spends-offseason-at-home-in-alaska-c304073454)
3rd round pick of the Brewers in 2014. He was acquired from the brewers in the Villar trade after the 2015 season. Fastball /change pitcher

A character indeed!
Ice cycles in his beard, cutting down trees while living in Alaska during the summers, I wonder if he can also DH (https://www.mlb.com/player/evan-gattis-594828).
The cold climate presents challenges for his baseball workouts. Fortunately, Sneed has friends that own a lodge that's closed in the winter, so he sets up a mattress in the basement and plays toss against it to keep up with his mechanics.
"I'm only throwing about 40 feet," Sneed said. "I'm not worried about what the ball's doing, I'm worried about what my body is doing, and then when I come out and throw to more distance on my bullpen and sides and stuff, the ball is doing naturally what I need it to do."
Is his workout limited during the summer? Could that explain some of his "wildness", er, .....in terms of pitching?

The summer? He is on a team.

(2nd try) Cy's description of his off season workout routine made me curious: what would be a "normal" off season workout for a pitcher?

Cy's description of his off season workout routine made me curious:
I found this short video of one of his workouts in Alaska.

I was reading this article and thought a bit about Sneeds multiple trips up and down and what a hassle that must be:
https://www.mlb.com/astros/news/cy-sneed-optioned-to-triple-a-by-astros
Then I thought about the articles in the beginning of the thread where he is a substitute teacher in the off-season since the AAA salary is so low ($2,700 per month for 6 months). His prorated salary for his 30+ days of service time in the bigs is over $100K now. What a great boon for him.
These upcoming September callups sure must be financially important for the non bonus babies.

Being on the 40-man is good for the major league minimum salary as well, regardless of where you're playing.

After thinking about this a bit more, I thought if you were on the 40-man for the first year but were playing in MiLB, you got a salary of $41,400 and for year 2 and beyond, it was $82,700. And, they only got the pro-rated MLB minimum for the number of days they were in the bigs. Is that outdated info?
-
No, I guess it isn't! Looks like I was wrong. From a Boston Globe article I found from 2018:
"Only major league players are unionized, and their collective bargaining agreement sets minimum salaries for players on 40-man rosters: $545,000 for those in the major leagues this season, $88,900 for 40-man roster players in the minors signing at least their second big league contract and $44,500 for 40-man roster players in the minors signing their first big league contract."

Just ran across this (http://www.orangewhoopass.com/forums/index.php?topic=117164.msg504286#msg504286).
Good stuff. Makes me sympathize with those trying to reach the show while making such little money.
