Top of the Fifth. No Score. 1 out.

I can't do PBP, but just wanted to acknowledge a game was happening.

Highlight of the game is White hitting into a double play with the bases loaded.

Astros had the bases loaded with one out in the 4th, with White at the plate. He hit a hard shot right up the middle, which is pretty much what you ask guys to do, but in The Age Of The Shift, it turned into a double play.

Shiftfuck roller by the 7 hitter, walk to the 8 hitter brings the Reds' pitcher up with nobody out in the 5th...sacrifice 2-4, so Reds at 2B and 3B, one out...

Cavan went yard again. He's also played LF, RF, 1st and 2nd bases, since his debut.

That was an unfortunate call by Pettis. Bregman could have walked home with the tying run.

You can understand not testing Puig with Alvarez coming up.

Yeah, Puig has a strong arm, but he was all of the way in the corner. I was surprised they didn't send him.

Definitely would have scored and now it'd be a tie ball game. I was shocked he didn't have the windmill going

Highlight of the game is White hitting into a double play with the bases loaded.

Highlight #2 was at the end of the bottom of the 5th, as White fired the ball to Chirinos after the "first"  DB to ensure the inning-ending DB.  Chirinos then applied a tag on the runner walking in from third who apparently had given up running, thinking the the DP had been made.

The tag eliminated a possible challenge to White being on the base with Bregman's wide throw for the DB @ 1st base.

(Not caught on camera but the Reds announcers complimented it as a "very intelligent play".  The Astros feed captures the tag by Chirinos without explanation from the announcers as Bregman wondered about the tag.)

Crazy smart play!

(After the game)  The tag by Chirinos is captured on the highlight "Bregman keeps DP alive'.

It's kind of hard to believe that eight walks have only resulted in two runs.

Brantley with a soft fly ball on the first pitch. Good thing Straw can't run or anything, or he'd feel cheated at not being given the opportunity to get into scoring position.

The two guys you're counting on most for professional at bats right now, and neither one reads the situation. Especially Bregman - nobody out, let the kid take a base so a ground ball sets up the run without a hit.

The Astros were simply not going to let Straw run that inning.

Or at least make the guy who just walked the 9 hitter get the ball close to the plate.

Exactly right. First pitch for both? Bregman pops up as many as he lines.

Cannot believe Pettit held Bregman on Brantley’s double.

We let that one get away.

Yep, that was surprising.  He's usually way more aggressive than that.  And there were two outs at the time, right?  Seems like a perfect time to send.  It's one thing to respect an outfielder's arm.  It's another to be completely intimidated by it in a crucial situation.  Especially when Puig was on the warning track as Bregman is starting his turn around 3rd at full steam.

Yep, when the ball stuck in the corner, I knew Bregman would score. Cannot believe he held him up.

I wasn't as sure as you guys were about Bregman scoring, but man, when an opportunity like that presents itself you must attempt to capitalize on it. If the other team makes a miraculous play, you tip your hat to them and go on. The Astros did nothing and got nothing. Hell, they didn't try to get anything. They just said, fuck it.

I think Alvarez on deck had something to do with it.

Maybe, but against a really good pitcher, you cannot count on another hit.

I don't disagree.

Other thoughts:

Straw only has one stolen base attempt (CS) since the 3 SB game on June 2. He didn't "look" ready to run last night on the one pitch to Bregman, but I didn't see his setup for Brantley.

Has Alvarez hit a fastball?

Bregman and Brantley his first pitches, right?

Yes, he has gotten base hits not homers on fastballs. That is his major room for adjustment, I think.

Yeah. They had the camera fixed on Straw for quite a while, but it was clear he wasn't going anywhere for the Bregman pitch.

Man, do I agree with this. He can hit a low fastball on a line. It's usually a frozen rope. He elevates the breaking pitches and soft stuff well with his very quick and quiet bat. Not a lot of wasted movement in that swing. But he is having trouble with the four seamer right now. The elevated fastball up and slightly in have him swinging under those pitches as far as I can see.... so expect to see that pitch a lot more in the coming weeks against him. He'll need to adjust to that fastball because that is his kryptonite right now.
